The Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this was, in effect, the same as being in exile from their God. The early Christians, following the Resurrection, expected an immediate return of Christ in glory; they, too, felt in “exile” as the delay of the Second Coming grew longer and longer. All four of scripture’s authors today—Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark—hasten to help us see things in God’s terms, not ours. They want us to know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from God-among-us, since we know that when the faithful are gathered, Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end to shorten the time of our exile: to repent of our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to live as people who seek the coming day of the Lord, when “kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss” (Psalm 85:10). We will gather on Tuesday, December 9th at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. We realize that everyone has very busy schedules, yet are hoping that this is something you will want to incorporate into your time. This ministry is in the formation stage, so come and tell us how we can help meet your needs!! If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas for this ministry, please contact Crissy. Second Sunday of Advent We continue on our Advent way, mindful of our own Baptism and its ongoing call for us to repent and be forgiven. For reflection this week: How and when will I repent of my sin, seeking God’s forgiveness? Let us pray: For all the baptized, the Church; may we strive to live free from sin, preparing a way for Christ to enter our hearts. We are Catholics, and we get that. We understand penance, and waiting. Penitence is like pregnancy: beleaguered, fraught with stress and stretch, and most appropriate at Advent. We are to wait in joyful hope. Are we waiting with young Mary, the teenage bride of the quiet carpenter, Joseph? Waiting with the expectant couple, as they make their way to Bethlehem? Or, are we waiting for Christ, triumphant, astride a white stallion, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords? We are awaiting both, of course. As was said, Advent is confusing, but we get a fresh chance every December to figure it out. To be continued…. Reminders: PREP is on Dec. 7 and Dec. 14, and resumes on Jan.8. In keeping with the liturgical season of Christmas, which lasts until Jan.11, 2015, (the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus), and the Epiphany tradition throughout the world, PREP students will receive small gifts, and learn about Epiphany, when they return in January. This also helps reinforce the importance of observing the seasons by the Church calendar. We will be encouraging them to bring in a baby item to honor Jesus at that time…..see below… Gifts for the Baby Jesus: For the last few years, every Dec. and Jan., we have collected items for babies (and new moms) to be donated to Birthright of Owensboro. Please bring in new, (or clean, gently used) items. Also: diapers, powder, etc. are always needed. We usually have a “Magi wagon” set up for collection of items in the foyer of the parish center, but the little red wagon has flown the coop!! (whereabouts unknown). So, there will be a box in the back of church for leaving items (if items are bulky, please leave in the parish center). These items will go directly to parents who really need help. Cash and gift cards are always a good idea, too. The staff of Birthright uses them for whatever is most needed. Thank You!! We are all part of the St. Mary Magdalene Family—married, single, divorced, separated, child, or teen—we are all connected in Christ’s family. The purpose of the Family Life Committee is to create, promote, and foster happy, healthy holy families and individuals through the outpouring of prayerful support, loving concern, and education opportunities by use of the Diocese, programs and Christ centered living. By offering programs to support our parish family, from womb to tomb, we hope to enliven the church and share the gospel of Jesus Christ with our community. Help is needed with this very important ministry. Please let Fr. Mark know or someone on the Parish Council if you can give some time or have questions about helping with the Family Life Committee. 5 Second Sunday of Advent (B) Upcoming Youth Dates Christmas Caroling Outing: ALL PARISHONERS are invited to go Christmas Caroling with the Youth Group on Sunday, December 14.at 2:00 PM We always have such a great time! We need adults to volunteer as drivers who have gone through the Safe Environment Training to help transport the youth (grades 6-12). If any child younger than the youth group age would like to go caroling, we would love to have them as long as their parent is accompanying them. Santa Hats, Christmas clothes, Reindeer Antlers, etc. are encouraged to be worn too! Youth Group Christmas Party: Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 28 because you’re not going to want to miss out!! We are taking a trip up to Evansville to Cici’s Pizza & SkyZone for a night of fun and fellowship. We will be leaving St. Mary Magdalene at 4:15 PM and returning around 10:00 PM that night. There are waiver’s that MUST be signed before participating in the jumping. Please, see Crissy to get a form. We are asking the youth to help offset some of the cost. $20 will help cover dinner and jumping at SkyZone. If money is an issue, please talk to Crissy. Parents who are cleared through Safe Environment are needed as chaperones. We have a bus rented for transportation. Please, let Crissy know if you can help. Youth Mass: Our next Youth Mass is on Sunday, December 14 at 10:30 AM. Any youth in grades 6-12 wishing to participate in any of the ministries and learn the music that will be sung, need to be at Mass Practice on Sunday, December 7 from 5:00-6:30 PM. This is a great way to learn about the mass and taking a different role in your participation in the liturgy. Confirmation Retreat Team: Any High School Youth that is interested in being a part of the Confirmation Retreat Team needs to contact Crissy. High School Students take on a vital role during the retreat in helping to lead activities, share their testimony’s, lead small group discussions, work behind the scenes, etc. The Confirmation Retreat is January 1617. Those wishing to serve on the team need to meet on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:30 PM to learn more about what is needed and to prepare for the retreat!! From the Youth Minister: What a treasure we have here at St. Mary Magdalene! We are so blessed to have the active youth that we have! I want to share a bit about an experience that I was able to have by working with your kids. ODYC was Nov. 21-22 at the Owensboro Convention Center where over 400 people were present from our Diocese. St. Mary Magdalene represented 29 of the youth and 6 adults who were there. Out of those 29 kids, I can confidently brag that I didn’t see a single one of them who seemed distracted by what other things were happening downtown (Christmas Parade, Arts & Craft Show, being downtown, etc). They all attended workshops, listened to keynote speakers, participated in a Helping Hands Project where several thousand meals were made, and other conference activities! Outside of the conference, there are such great experiences with our youth on a weekly basis at youth group and regularly with extra events! There are discussions happening in the Middle & High School Youth weekly that are so deep, where the kids are interested in the faith and learning how to share it!! Our kids have lots of opportunities to come and be of service to the parish in many capacities. They do not complain about the work to be done, but have such a joy within themselves where the work gets done, but there is enjoyment of being with each other. Take a moment to be proud of our teens. They are truly a treasure to our parish!! Sorgho Elementary sent us 120 Angels to hang on the treeall money donated by our parishioners will be sent to Sorgho School to purchase 2 gifts for a child. 60 children will be helped. The parish does not keep any money that is designated “Angel Tree.” While the requested amount is $25, any amount is most sincerely appreciated. Checks are made out to the parish (for your tax purposes). The check or cash can be sealed in an envelope, with the angel inside it or attached. (There will be a collection box under the tree, with the money collected from it frequently). Money needs to be turned in by December 14th. For Sorgho School families to receive assistance, the parents must attend the parent/teacher conference; follow attendance policy; and attend at least one workshop (Parenting Skills session). Kathy Watkins, from the Sorgho, will be meeting with the “angel” parents ONLY (the children will not be going along), on a specified shopping day at Walmart. The parents will be shopping for their children, with the school representative. They will be able to pick out the gifts, and wrap them themselves. 7 Second Sunday of Advent (B) December 7, 2014 IN SPECIAL NEED OF PRAYER Happy Birthday to You!!
