W
e have all heard that pets
and their owners usually
look a lot alike. But have
you heard of the guy who loves an
animal so much that he is going
through great pains (literally) to
look like it?
No? Well, meet Jenya Bolotov, a
26-year-old Russian, who loves
Platypus and has spent seven years
transforming himself into a human
version of the furry duck-billed
creature.
Jenya has put himself through
hours of excruciating pain stretching eight parts of his face beyond
all recognition to achieve his
bizarre look. He has had both
of his ear lobes, his nostrils,
septum and his top and bottom
lip stretched to over nine and a
half inches altogether. He is also
the only person in the world to
have the very top bridge of his nose
stretched. And Jenya says he won’t
stop gouging his body until he
realises his vision.
He explained: “I love platypus - the
way they look and even the word
‘platypus’ itself. All of the modifications I have added to my body
make me feel whole. This is what
I am now. It is what I have always
wanted to be.”
Jenya first became aware of body
modifications at the age of ten
China’s

E
when he began to explore body
piercings. At age 19, he started
the slow and painful process of
stretching his own top and bottom
lip as he aspired to the look of the
egg-laying mammals.
Seven years on, he has finally
achieved a stretched size of 58mm
on his bottom lip and 33mm on his
top lip. And he hasn’t finished yet.
Jenya, claims his mad modifications
don’t affect day-to-day life and that
he is able to eat, talk and speak on
the phone like everyone else.

Maybe you would not,
but then you are not
Stephen Ramsey of
Naples, Florida. This
gentleman, made a 911
call not once but three
times, in a bid to land
a date.
Just in case you are
inspired by him, please know that
it did not land him a date, but did
land him in jail.
Stephen, 45, allegedly call 911 three
times and asked the dispatcher if
she was interested on going on a
date. The lady on the other
line was not interested,
but Stephen was not to
be discouraged easily. He
persisted for more than
six minutes and even
asked her if she was “into
handcuffs?”
After his failed efforts he
laughed and finally hung
up the phone.
A deputy was sent to the
suspect’s home, following
the call. Ramsey allegedly
told him he was “looking
for a date or escort service
to help him pass the time.”
Well, looks like he did get the
handcuffs, just not in the kind of
scenario, he imagined.
ver heard of an examination conducted with
telescopes, ladders,
cameras and loudspeakers? We had not too,
until now. Baoji College, a
university in China’s Shanxi
province, held an exam
session that was pretty
spectacular.
It hosted an examination
for 1,200 students. If you
are not suitably impressed,
then maybe it is because
you think that it was in
different classrooms. Well,
this was not the case. The
1,200 students had their
exams at one time in one
large hall at the same time.
Three sessions were held
on one day.
Here is the interesting part,
the exam hall required 80
invigilators, telescopes,
ladders, high-definition
cameras and loudspeakers. The college dean
explained that there were
two reasons for the exam
to be such a spectacle.
First it was to help students
understand the severity
of the situation, and take
the exam seriously, and
secondly,to prevent cheating, which allegedly is a big
problem throughout China.
By the way Baoji College
is a pro at this, they have
been organizing exams like
this for ten years, with a
session in spring and one
in autumn.

PAHALGHAM,
KASHMIR
A place to disconnect from the rest of the world
Issue93 www.weekender.bh
P
ahalgham, located in the Indian
state of Jammu and Kashmir is
a favourite get-away destination
of Mudasir Shora. While most people
on their vacations visit capital cities of
major holiday locations, he chooses
to go a different route and reconnect
with nature.
Mudasir describes Pahalgham as, “one
of the most serene environments one
can experience,” and adds that it “calms
you the moment you enter the place”.
“I make it a point to visit this heavenly
place once a year and stay there for
a week,” Mudasir said. The rivers
and mountains in particular have a
soothing effect on the soul. Reinforcing Mudasir’s point of view is the
experience of Bollywood superstar
Shahrukh Khan. He suffers from insomnia but apparently slept there for
a straight 10 hours during his recent
shoot in Pahalgham.
“He couldn’t stop himself from tweeting to his fans worldwide about the
incident,” Mudasir said who, like
Shahrukh Khan, got the chance to
heal his body and soul from deep
inside at this magnificent place.
Pahalgham is most well-known and
famous for the breathtaking beauty
of its natural wonders and environments, which makes it the perfect
location to plan a trip to disconnect
Weekender|November 20-26, 2014
from the rest of the world for a little
while (or a romantic getaway!) It is a
mystically serene environment and
Mudasir claims that “the place is
blessed beyond description.”
Pahalgham is around a two and a half
hour drive from Srinagar, the capital
of Jammu and Kashmir. The cost of
the trip can get expensive during the
summer season. If you like sea food,
then you will definitely like local
Kashmiri cuisine which features local
trout fishes and traditional “Wazwan”
which simply adds flavor to your
travel experience!
The area is full of natural landmarks
such as the Lidder River, Baisaran,
Beetab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari,
and the local people are described as
very friendly and helpful. “Hospitality is the core essence of Kashmiri
culture,” Mudasir said.
Mudasir believes that there is an
important lesson to take away from
his experience in Pahalgham. It is a
lesson that anyone can learn from visiting the location, which is, “To find
peace, we don’t need plush expensive
neighborhoods and high-tech gadgets.
Just by staying close to nature, you
will find the peace and tranquility you
have been looking for,”
“You need to be a Shakespeare to
describe the experience, but it is best
felt when you witness that yourself,”
he concluded.

CASTING A
NET FOR
LADIES
Bahraini Netball champion Khulood Ali
Sabah on a drive to promote the sport
N
etball is a ball sport played by two
teams of seven players each. The
objective is to score as many baskets
as possible. It has been played in Bahrain for
a long time but is now starting to grow into
a real competitive sport in Bahrain and the
Gulf region.
One of the most famous names attached to
the sport is Khulood Ali Sabah, who has been
playing netball for 12 years, winning numerous local and regional awards, including
Player of the Year for four years in a row.
Khulood began her career very young and
has been playing netball on the island for
almost 12 years. She first began playing
netball as a hobby sport at school and then
joined the juniors league at the age of 15 for
the Sri Lankan Club Bahrain. She started off
as a Center player and eventually picked up
the pace and in two years became one of the
best junior players in the league. Khulood
continued playing for the club for five years
and won Player of the Year 4 years in a row.
After getting more experience, she moved to
a more experienced team, joining the Dilmun
Club as an A team player as their Goal Attack. There she was nominated Player of the
Year and Player’s Player for the two years
that she played for that team.
At the moment Khulood has joined the
Rugby Club of Bahrain and is their Goal
Attack on the A team who are now two year
champions of the Bahrain Netball League.
Khulood also stated that, “Every year we
have the GCC Inter-Gulf Tournament, where we get selected to
represent the Kingdom, and being
a Bahraini it really makes me
proud that I am part of the team,
carrying my country’s colors.”
Name: Khulood Ali Sabah
Profession: Administration - British
School of Bahrain
Age: 26
Marital Status: Single
MY TAKE ON BAHRAIN
Bahrain = Diverse
Favourite Restaurants: Frangipani, Moti Mahal, Nu Asia
Favourite Outdoor location:
Amwaj
Like: Coffee Shops (Starbucks)
Dislike: Malls (when they are
crowded)
How do you like to spend your
weekend?
Usually I spend my weekends
with my friends on a Thursday
and Friday is family day. We go
out to either Amwaj or just chill at
home watching a movie.
QUESTIONS:
Where do you see netball going in
the future?
Netball has been going on for quite
some time in Bahrain, but due to
it being not a popular sport like
football, the game does not get any
recognition from the local people. If
there was a good image promoted
about netball being a growing sport
in the Gulf and that would encourage
all ages and nationalities to come
down. We are now trying to shed a
light about Netball through magazines,
newspapers and mini tournaments. But
I would say if we do get enough people
to become interested in the game then
netball will surely be a fun – skilled
game played on the island.
What’s your most urgent priority for the
rest of the year?
I have a lot of priorities this year and I
still haven’t concentrated on the main
one but one of the most fun events
coming up is the GCC Inter-Gulf Netball
Tournament that will be held in the
Kingdom. This year I think I
would like to win instead of coming second place.
H
as Khulood got you interested enough
to take up Netball? If yes, then here is
how you can participate and join the
sport.
There are four clubs that have Netball in the
Kingdom. They include
1 – The Rugby Club Of Bahrain
2 – The British Club
3 – Dilmun Club
4 – The Sri Lankan Club
If you are keen to play netball, then head
down to any one of these clubs on a Sunday
night at 7pm and try out.
Netball Team Manager at the Bahrain Rugby
Football Club, Helen Hind has this to add,
What did you do to build yourself
as an athlete? Is it because of
training, lived experience, or both?
I was always into sports since I was
a child. When I was in school I was
Sports Captain and won almost every
sport. I used to do athletics, basketball, football and netball. At the end I
stayed with netball because it was not
a common game and not everyone
could play it unless you understand
the rules and regulations. Training has
kept me fit and I also go to the gym to
keep my stamina.
What do you think makes netball
unique from other more popular
sports in Bahrain?
Netball is a fun filled game, where you
learn to manage skills and teamwork.
It’s an all-women’s game and the environment is amazing. It’s a different
sport and there’s no denying that it
is unique. It may not count as a sport
Weekender|November 20-26, 2014
if you play rugby or football, but there is no
other team game out there which is played
while pivoting with your one foot.
What’s one thing you’re deeply proud of —
but would never put on your résumé?
I can find anything to say to make people
feel better when they are down, but we can
never mention it in a resume as it is a quality
that can’t be shown.
What’s going to be carved on your (hypothetical) tombstone?
“Lived For A While, It Was OK… Booyah”
If you could sit down with your 15-year old
self, what would you tell her?
If I could go back to being 15 years old I
would sit myself down and tell myself to
try and work things out with your brain and
not your heart. And to always be the better
half, be responsible for your wrongs and not
“In order to get netball out into the public
eye as a club we hold various fun mixed
tournaments throughout the year which are
also a great way to raise money for charity,
we encourage all abilities and ages to play.”
On Thursdays we run junior netball for
members at the Rugby Club and we currently have around 120 players. Our aim is
that the older players will ideally feed up
into the senior squad once they are ready.”
Although the Rugby Club is proactive, in
order for the netball scene to reach the
wider community they need more exposure
to promote the sport. This can help create
additional interest and encourage new
sponsors to the sport.
blame others. In short I would say “DON’T
GROW UP.”
Are you living your LIFE PURPOSE — or still
searching?
I’m still 26 and so I am still searching, but I
believe that I learn something new every day.
Life’s purpose is to live it like it’s your last
day, including being able to learn and teach
someone something, leaving your footprints
for a life time.
I am very happy with how my life is going
so far, as I am enjoying every day of it. I only
anticipate the best. My perspective on life is
about seizing the moment and making the
best out of it. I always look at life positively,
no matter how much the boat of life rocks
me. I believe that I grow stronger with
time so that I know I am ready for a better
brighter future.

Managing
stress
at Work
oping With the
accelerated pace
of work and outcomes in our developing countries, employees became under a
huge pressure and they
find themselves bent
over many tasks and
deadlines that must be
performed in a specific record time. Recent global
statics showed that 82 per cent of employees are
suffering of a serious stress at work, which can
affect their performance and productivity.
Can something be done to address this problem?
If you have asked this question on reading the
above, well then you are in good
company.
Origin Group, the company that
hosts experts and seminars aimed
at improving the best practices for
Human Capital has come up with the
idea to organize a “Stress Management Forum”. Participants will learn
how contribute to reduce stress at the
office and home. It is expected to increase productivity and help the local
community with intensive workshops
that reprogram their minds to think
in healthier, less stressful and power
minded way through the “Stress Management Forum”.
The forum will have the special presence of International
spiritual expert Sri Shuddhaanandaa Ji. It will be held at
the Regency Intercontinental on December 8, under the
Patronage of Dr Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza minister of
Electricity & Water.
The programme will focus primarily on the three key
practices of “Mindfulness” and they are Meditation,
Stress Reduction and Mind Power. This will help participants to awaken their latent potentials and achieve
personal and corporate success.
There will be two workshops on the first day done by
Shuddhaanandaa followed by a forum moderated by
Mrs. Eman Al Mousawi. There will be additionally postconference workshops on day two with the participa-

tion of a CBT therapist, Rieki specialist and Yoga expert
along with Shuddhaanandaa.
Who should attend?
This programme is not just for employees. If a company
is to be successful then management in all organizations
need to take serious action against the problems associated with stress. This can be done by observing the
level of stress at the organization and provide successful
solutions to those stressed employees. Ignoring the stress
and pressure at the office or underestimating the extent
of their impact on the employee; may lead to reduce
productivity and employee engagement, decrease self
– esteem and confidence. Hence, people at the higher
decision making levels should also avail this opportunity
on how to ensure that their employees perform at peak
levels.

By Aakash Munjal
hile browsing Facebook newsfeed
thru my mobile, one screen caught
my total attention: a feed on
Liverpool Fans’ reaction on their defeat to
Chelsea followed immediately by a feed on
Suarez reviving Barcelona against Almeria
over the last weekend.
It said a lot to me and also
possibly to anyone following football at Liverpool.
Roughly at the same time
last year, Liverpool was in
2nd position on the league
table with 23 points scoring 21 goals, today they
are in 11th position with
14 points scoring 14 goals.
What changed at the
club in one year gets in
to a long debate, but one
obvious and easy answer
is the absence of SAS
Factor – Suarez and Sturridge. At this stage last
season, a lethal partnership between these two
was hammering opponent
teams. They had already
scored 16 goals between them (8 each) and
many of these 16 goals were a result of these
two assisting each other. It was there sheer
pace and hunger for the goals, of course
along with the skills to finish off, which was
working for Liverpool’s counter attacking
style of football.
Suarez obviously has moved on to Barcelona. But Liverpool were ready to move on as
well, without him,
trying to push on
the movement that
started in 2013 early season, and Sturridge
was supposedly the key weapon for them,
with the needed help from Sterling and Co.
Things went bad for the club when Sturridge got injured during the
international break. Before
that, he scored against
Southampton in Liverpool’s
first game of the season and
was influential in the club’s
win at White Hart Lane.
Liverpool won both the
games and since then Sturridge has been injured and
Liverpool have won only 2
of their 8 games!
Suarez, on the other hand
has played 3 games now for
Barcelona and has created 3
goals and played an influential part in the game against
Almeria in which Barcelona
conceded first. As the headlines says: Suarez designed
the Barcelona Come back
in the game. You won’t be wrong if you bet
on Suarez shining at Barca and continue his
legacy in world football.
But how Liverpool carries their show without Suarez remains a constant talking point
and while they never will be able to replace
Suarez, how they build a team around Sturridge (hoping he is back soon) remains their
biggest challenge now.

COOKING
Masson’s taste
for the Bisque
Who: masson seigfried
Designation: f&b manager, novotel al dana resort, bahrain
Masson Seigfried was almost born in the kitchen of his father, a French chef near Lyon,
city recognized by UNESCO as world capital of gastronomy. He actually recalls times
when we was showered in the pot wash. Eventually, he started working in a restaurant
when he was 5.
After experiencing all type of eateries, from fine dining to Bistrot, he finally decided to
take a move out of France. After two years at sea on ships as
prestigious as the Queen Elizabeth 2 or the Queen Mary 2,
he finally set sails to London where he started with his
first roles as manager.
Striving to share with his teams his passion for ALL
food and ALL beverages; he grew in his career taking
in charge of an award winning restaurant in Abu
Dhabi and up to F&B manager of 5 Star hotels in
exotic destinations such as Bora Bora or Koh Samui, in
his stride.
In a funny manner, it was out of France that he gained
his exhaustive knowledge about grape beverages.
Avoid the subject with him if you are in a
hurry as otherwise you could be get
stuck for hours as he enlightens you on
the topic
Now in Bahrain with Novotel, he
preaches an Epicureanism for
everyone. For him a restaurant is a
place to enjoy the uncomplicated
pleasure of life. His motto: “Cook
to please, not to impress”.
Masson shares with you one of
his favourite dishes, the Bisque.
Very few know that Bisque can
be made only with shrimps, he explains. In medieval times, while lobsters
were legions on the coast of Europe,
Lobster Bisque was actually given as a
soup to prisoners. “In our days where
this favorite seafood became luxury,
shrimp bisque is for me a return to the
origin of the recipe. Like a robin hood,
it gives back to the common people
these typical soft and delicate flavors,”
he adds.
Bisque
INGREDIENTS
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter,
divided
1 1/2 pound medium shrimp (about 45),
peeled, deveined, shells reserved
2 bay leaves, divided
2 carrots, peeled, chopped
2 celery stalks, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1/4 cup long-grain white rice
2 tablespoons tomato paste
3 sprigs fresh flat-leaf parsley
3 sprigs fresh thyme
1 sprigs fresh lemongrass
1/4 teaspoon (or more) cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh chives
Note: The original recipe also calls for 1/2 cup
brandy but instead you can use two flowers of
Star Anise, to obtain thesame flavour and effect.
PREPARATION
b Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large heavy pot over
medium-high heat. Add shrimp shells and cook, stirring
frequently, until they begin to brown, about 5 minutes.
Add 1 bay leaf and 8 cups water. Simmer uncovered for 25
minutes. Set a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl. Strain
discarding solids. DO AHEAD: Shrimp stock can be
made 3 days ahead. Let cool slightly; chill uncovered until
cold, then cover and keep chilled.
b Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large heavy pot over
medium heat. Add shrimp and cook, stirring occasionally,
until just opaque in center, 3-4 minutes. Transfer shrimp
to a plate. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter to same
pot. Add carrots, celery, and onion and cook over medium
heat, stirring frequently, until very soft, about 20 minutes.
b Remove pot from heat. Return pot to heat and stir until
almost evaporated, 2-3 minutes. Add rice and tomato
paste; stir for 1 minute. Add shrimp stock, remaining
bay leaf, parsley, thyme, lemongrass and 1/4 teaspoon
cayenne. Simmer uncovered until flavors meld and rice
is soft, about 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
Reserve 4 shrimp for garnish and stir remaining shrimp
into bisque. Remove parsley, thyme, and bay leaf.
b Working in batches, purée bisque in a blender until
smooth. Pour through a finemesh strainer set over a clean
pot. Discard solids in strainer. Stir in cream and reheat
bisque over medium heat. Add lemon juice. Season to
taste with salt, pepper, and more cayenne, if desired.
b Mince reserved shrimp and mix with chives in a small
bowl. Place 1 heaping tablespoon shrimp mixture in the
center of large, shallow soup bowls. Ladle bisque around
garnish and serve.

F
rom real life Disney-princesses to being the spotlight of some major fashion editorials- stars indeed
dress for fashion immortality, when the Red Carpet
rolls out,. The proverb “Appearances are everything” especially holds true this one night as the Cinderella story
keeps getting more and more magical for Hollywood Alisters. A sprinkling of Valentino, a splash of Prada and a
dash of Versace, we dish out some of the major signature
looks as part of the much-hyped pre-event hoopla you’ve
been hearing about all year round. Making into this
year’s list are a few fashion statements you surely don’t
wanna miss.
FASHION
STATEMENTS
mmm CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR
S
imple and yet effective, showing that black can too be gentle and feminine is what this look is about. Sweetheart necklines,
dramatic draping, voluminous frocks and a subdued elegance are sure to keep on blasting front pages across the globe for
quite some time yet. What’s not to like? Clearly, Sandra Bullock hardly ever gets it wrong and this time, she flew the flag
for a deeper demeanor in a navy Alexander McQueen gown that took our breath away and was the crowd’s favourite at the Oscars Red Carpet event. Expect more celebrities to follow in her super structured footsteps. Her hair styled into side swept curls
completed her classic mien to total sophistication. This “red carpet pro” look is surely one sustainable fashion statement that always looks just right. Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett and Charlize Therone were also spotted endorsing this trend at the Golden Globes..
mmm DISNEY-PRINCESS LOOK
A
work of art in itself, the risk takers endorsing this
trend are to be applauded. Baby blue and the palest
of pink silk-chiffon gowns are hands down, the most
romantic looks ever showcased on the Red Carpet- dreamy
and flowing, dripping in strategically-placed sequins, the
classic Disney-princess look hit another sartorial height
when Georgio Armani embraced this trend recently with
flared tulle skirts and crinoline edging. Lupita N’yongo, Kate
Blanchett and Penelope Cruz indeed exceeded our expectations on the Oscar night this year. Slit skirts and one shoulder
dresses, fully embroidered with raised dégradé sequins and
light gold Swarovski crystal baguettes are sure to get our vote
for the most resplendent demeanor on Red Carpet events this
year round.

NUDE TREND mmm
low key colours and tan opulence of ap-
T
plique work on dégradé chiffons and silk with
halter-necklines and delicate embellishments
were a major hit this award season. Bands of gold
and silver beetling long strapless gowns cut out from
ribbed silk sure sparkled in the glare of the photographers’ lights. There’s no denying that Katy Perry’s
sheer, full length “musical dress” indeed bought
music to life- with a corset top and crisscross tulle
bodice, more lengths of floor-length tulle and a small
train, no doubt Valentino out did itself as the next
reigning fashion royalty. Another hot number was
Beyonce’s perfectly polished, gorgeous white lace
gown by Michael Costello. Look closely and it definitely had a French whiff about it. The soft nude hues
are definitely more feminine and a must-have for a
flattering red-carpet to a Vanity-fair makeover.
So what are you going to wear to your next Red Carpet occasionally?

Kids being taught a lesson on safety
‘B
uckle up with Nissan’ a campaign to
educate children on the importance
of using seat-belts in cars has been
launched by Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons the official
dealership of Nissan.
Nissan Safety Campaign aims to educate
children and parents on the importance of car
safety and is being held in partnership with The
Budaiya Pre -School.
As part of the campaign, once the children arrive
at the school, the teachers responsible for receiving
them check if the child has their seatbelt on and
are sitting in their car seat. Once the child is seen
to be buckled up, he/she receives a sticker.
Children who collect nine stickers will receive
a gift from Nissan and parents will also receive
a sun shade or key chain. Paul Baker, General
Manager at Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons said, “If
parents practice car safety and teach their children the importance of these safety measures,
these are lessons children will always remember
and will themselves practice in the future”.
This safety campaign sponsored by Nissan will
be driven through the coming school semesters
and will eventually be spread across different
schools within the Bahrain.
In contrast to its predecessor, the SL 400 is not fitted with a naturally aspirated engine. Instead it boasts a six-cylinder unit with
two turbochargers. Although its displacement has been reduced
to three litres, the biturbo drive system develops a high full-load
output potential with a charge pressure of 1.8 bar, and facilitates
an extremely high torque of 480 newton metres at low engine
speeds. It achieves 20 kW more than the SL 350. Its torque
increases by 110 newton metres and is available in the engine
speed range of 1600- 4000rpm.

MAKE NOISE
WITH A BEANIE
E
veryone knows how to turn on and off a light. When the
switch is up, the light is on, and when it’s down, the light is
off (unless you had a terrible electrician who messed it up).
But it’s also very nice to have dimmer lights to set the mood or
when you don’t need that much lighting.
With the Booo Smart Lights Dimmer, you can do all of that
without the hassle of installation. It’s much more convenient to
just tap an object the size of a pebble to control the lighting. The
Booo Smart Dimmer is a colorful little polycarbonate pebble
with an aluminum that can act as a dimmer switch for any lamp
you put it near.
You don’t need to set up an app on your phone but you do need
Booo lights installed for the Dimmer pebble to be compatible.
Sure, you can get an adaptor to use it with other lights but it’s
much cooler without one!

ure, texting and messenger apps have a lot of great features
but there is nothing like the feeling you get when you use
a walkie talkie device. That’s what the new Onyx communicator device is – a portable device that acts just like a walkie

Fans of Star Trek might be familiar with this kind of device. You
still need a phone and need to pair it with an app, but it’s still
unbelievably cool! You can talk to anyone, anywhere around the
world connected through Wi-Fi or cellular access.
