Wednesday 3 December 2014 From the Principal This week we are saying farewell to a number of staff members – Dominique Gardiner, Courtney Gemmell, Hannah MacDermott and Katherine Scott. I would like to thank Dom, Courtney, Hannah and Katherine for the many gifts and talents they have bought to our school as well as their dedication and commitment. I wish you all the best for next year. Issue No. 37 schools Australia wide. We will continue to deliver the important information and upcoming events to you, the school community, just in a different format. Thank-you St Mary’s School Officers! I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our St Mary’s School Officers whose work often goes unnoticed or is not acknowledged. These ladies work daily in our classrooms and support students either in the classroom, in small groups or individually. We are fortunate to have a very experienced team who work closely with Louise Upton and the classroom teachers to ensure the individual needs of our St Mary’s students are met. In 2015, we are fortunate enough to have these committed and experienced ladies continue the vital and valued work that they do on a daily basis. Thank-you to Tracey Irvine, Bronwyn Hodgen, Ann Russell, Di Fox and Trish Gurnett! To the families leaving St Mary’s School, I extend my best wishes and hope you settle into your new schools, wherever they may be. Again, I trust that you take fond memories of St Mary’s School, the friends made and experiences enjoyed with you, and that the school has contributed to your character. Where possible, we encourage you to stay in touch with the friends you have made and keep an eye out for what this great school continues to achieve. Wherever you go, I find there is still a sense of belonging to and pride in a school which you’ve been a End of Year Liturgy and Awards Ceremony 2014 part of. Tomorrow, Thursday 4th December, all members of the St Mary’s School community are warmly invited to our End of Year I hope you all have a safe and wonderful Liturgy and Awards Ceremony commencing at 9:00am in the holiday and Christmas! My thanks and appreciation must go to Mrs Deidre Murray for her preparation of the newsletter each week and bringing all the Book Lists bits and pieces together. 2015 booklists were sent home with the end of semester reports. These booklists can will have an e-newsletter that will be produced once a fortnight also be downloaded from the school website Charleby Schoolzine, a company who produce newsletters for many ville.twb.catholic.edu.au I recently came across the following tips of Happiness that Stop Being Negative came from an interview with Pope Francis and would like Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self esto share them with you all: teem. Negative thoughts feed unhappiness and a bad self image. Positive thoughts breed happiness and healthy Live and Let Live self esteem. All of us will live longer and more happily if we stop trying to arrange other peoples’ lives. Jesus challenged us not to Work For Peace judge but to live with the tension and let God and history Peace is more than the absence of war and working for make the judgements. To live we need to live by our own peace means more than not causing disharmony. Peace, convictions and let others do the same. like war, must be waged actively by working for justice, equality and an even wider inclusivity in terms of what Be Giving of Yourself to Others makes up our family. Waging peace is the perennial Happiness lies in giving ourselves away. We need to be struggle to stretch hearts, our own to others, to accept in open and generous because if we withdraw into ourselves God’s house there are many rooms and that all faiths, not we run the risk of becoming self-centred and no happiness least our own, are meant to be a house of prayer for all will be found there since ‘stagnant water becomes putrid’. peoples. Proceed Calmly Move with kindness, humility and calm. These are the antithesis of anxiety and distress. Calm never causes high blood pressure. We need to make conscious efforts to never let the moment cause panic or excessive hurry. Rather be late than stressed. A Healthy Sense of Leisure Never lose the pleasure of art, literature and playing with children. Remember that Jesus scandalized others with his capacity to enjoy life in all its sensuousness. We don’t live by work alone, no matter how important and meaningful it might be. In heaven there will be no work, only leisure, we need to learn the art and joy of leisure not just to prepare for heaven but to enjoy some of heaven already now. Sundays Should Be Holiday Workers should have Sundays off because this should be a day for the family. Accomplishment, productivity and speed should not become our most valued commodities or we will begin to take everything for granted, our lives, our health, our families, our friends, those around us and all the good things in life. That is why God gave us a commandment to keep the Sabbath holy. This is not a lifestyle suggestion, but a commandment as binding. Thank-you to all of our St Mary’s parents who continue to promote our school in a positive light and what a wonderful 2014 we have had ‘Learning Through Loving and Living’. I thank parents also who take the time to thank staff at St Mary’s for the work that they do ensuring our students reach their full potential ….it costs nothing but a few minutes! I look forward to a bigger and better 2015 and wish all St Mary’s families and friends every blessing during the festive season ahead. God bless, Louise R.E. News Thank you to all the staff and parents for your connued support over the last two years. It is with great sadness that I leave such a wonderful school and town. The roll out of the new Religious Educaon Curriculum this year has been seamless as we have had very dedicated teachers and outstanding support from Toowoomba Catholic Educaon for the implementaon phase. I wish especially to thank those parents who supported their children in the Sacramental program and the various fund raising and special projects of outreach that were organised throughout the year. Christmas can be a dark place for those who have experienced a loss or some sadness during the year. Let’s be conscious of those in our midst this Christmas who maybe suffering and invite them in to the warmth of our stable. I came across the following reflecon : Wrapped in linen strips, his first bed was a straw filled manger, the feeding trough of the animals. God wrapped in swaddling clothes? God lying in a manger? No one would ever have suspected that God coming to Earth would be so helpless. And that is precisely why so many fail to find him. Just imagine….if you had the whole world at your finger ps, if you were able to choose where and how you would have your first baby, what kind of place would you choose? A first rate hospital? Comfortable and warm surroundings? Yet God who could have chosen anywhere chose the lowliest place on Earth. From the moment of his birth, Jesus idenfied with poverty and pain. The stable – there lay all the hopes of 4,000 years of recorded history. Christmas is the me and place where God pulls back the curtain so that we can see his face. God could not have made himself bigger to impress us, so he made himself smaller to a6ract us. Lord, As we celebrate another Christmas Help us to live each moment gratefully May we have the faith to trust in the gi9s you have given us May we have the hope that overcomes the dark thoughts that somemes cloud our vision May we have the love that makes our world a be6er place. We make this prayer through Jesus our brother, born for us again in Bethlehem. Amen Peace Dominique Gardiner Year 5 News What a wonderful year it has been! I wish to take this opportunity to thank my delightful Year 5 class and the positive support of the parents, friends and family of these beautiful students. I am very proud of their achievements and growth this year and am certain that they will make a fantastic group of leaders in 2015. I would like to wish Sam Elmes, Etosha Shipley, Paige Einam and Josie McPhee all the very best at their new schools and towns next year. Thank you for helping to make this year one to remember. Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday and have fun in Year 6! All the best for 2015, Miss MacDermott. Year 6 News The end is here! Disobeying level crossing signals or trespassing on railway property is not only dangerous, but illegal and could result in prosecution. Queensland Rail is encouraging parents and schools to discuss this important safety information with their students and children, empowering them to be Railsmart.
