WHO ARE THE CARMELITES?
Are you called? Aspirant Program 2015-2016
Do you desire to learn and experience a deeper
spirituality? The mystical tradition in the Catholic Church,
inspired by St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and St.
Therese of Lisieux, explains how to live in a closer
relationship with the living Christ and the practical caring
for others that flows from that relationship.
We are the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS),
men and women committed to living the fullness of God’s love
through prayer and scripture, with the aid of Our Lady. The Maria,
Mater Et Regina Carmeli Bakersfield Community meets every third
Sunday at Christ the King Church. Come see what the Secular
Order is all about.
You may contact Ginny Morton, Director of Formation at
706-3212 or Shirley Puccinelli, at 301-3679 by Jan. 4, 2015.

FATHER JOHN BURNS IS AVAILABLE FOR CONFESSION AND COUNSELING!
Father (331-0872) is available by appointment only in his new apartment. His phone may be on “silent” if he is with someone
so please leave a message. His new address is 514D Douglas St., Bakersfield/Oildale. The entrance is off China Grade Loop
West of McCray in the Whispering Meadows complex. Call Fr. John for directions.
ADVENT WREATH
Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four
candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is
rose, but white candles can also be used.
The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods
works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest
also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete (gaudēte) Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the
faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close
to Christmas.
The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s
first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead..
