President’s Message
In spite of difficulties trying to connect his lap top with our power point apparatus, Major Marc Whitehead gave
us an inspiring message. What diverse experiences he has had, in Canada and abroad! It was interesting to hear
how the military interacts with the municipalities in times of emergency. It was informative to hear of the
excellent training that our service women and men experience while in the service of our country.
But the speech was only part of the program. The Westway Probus Club chorus, all 110 of us present, joined in
singing some very familiar songs from our past with Anne Wiensczyk giving strong support at the piano.
I think we all felt pride in our country as a result of our Remembrance Day meeting.

ACTIVITIES
Games Club
The Games Club met in November and enjoyed a fun afternoon playing Yahtze. The big winner was Chris
Cuneo. Please note that because our annual Christmas Luncheon is scheduled for the first week of December
the Games Club will meet on the second Tuesday December 9 at 1:30pm.
Book Club
Our last book was The Massey Murder by Charlotte Gray. The overall rating was 3.5 out of 5. Next we will be
reading The Language of Flowers by Venessa Diffenbaugh. Ricky
Euchre Group
Playing the last Monday of each month. At October’s Euchre we welcomed a guest for the afternoon who also
managed to tie for High Score of the Day. Millie and Mary Lou tied for High Score and Barb won the draw, an
enjoyable afternoon on a nice fall day. Linda
Pole Walking
We had three successful days pole walking in the park but now that the colder weather has hit, several members
are walking at Cloverdale Mall. If there is someone who would like instruction and an introduction to pole
walking indoors, please contact me [email protected] and I will arrange to meet you at the mall where you can

November Luncheon at the Mandarin Restaurant on the Queensway on Friday November 21 at 11:30 am.
The reservation is under Westway Probus.
Let There Be Music Christmas Concert on Wednesday November 26th at 8:00pm. It takes place
at Westway United Church located at 8 Templar Drive. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Clarkson Theatre's presentation of Young Frankenstein on Saturday November 29 at 2:00pm at the
Meadowvale Theatre - 6515 Montevideo Road in Mississauga. Tickets have already been given out to the
participating members.

Constable Mike Burgess Crime Prevention Officer 22 Division South Etobicoke 25year veteran of Toronto
Police Force, will give us a presentation on burglar proofing our homes and protecting ourselves. Given that
Etobicoke has been the target for break- ins this year and last year, this should be a welcome learning and
reinforcing experience for us.

Denise Harris, Heritage Officer Etobicoke Historical Society has been lecturing on local history for 15years.
Her topic is Etobicoke past and present in pictures. This illustrated talk focuses on the rich history of the former
Township of Etobicoke. Old photographs, many rarely seen, will each be followed by a recent picture taken in
the same location. Come and see how much we've changed in the past 100 years.

monthly newsletter reducing our mailing number of copies from 19 to 17!

John McCrae Born Guelph Nov30,1872-Jan28,1918
Though various legends have developed as to the
inspiration for the poem, the most commonly held belief is
that McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields on May 3 1915, the
day after presiding over the funeral and burial of his friend
Lieutenant Alex Helmer, who had been killed during the
Second Battle of Ypres. The poppy, which was a central
feature of the poem, grew in great numbers in the spoiled
earth of the battlefields and cemetries of Flanders.
