November Meeting…
Millionaires Row, Cleveland, Ohio
At its height of grandeur, Millionaires Row in Cleveland stretched
four miles along Euclid Avenue
from Public Square. Approximately
250 mansions comprised what
was once known as “the most
beautiful street in America.” Millionaires Row featured the magnificent homes of Cleveland’s
most influential families, many of
which are still familiar to us today
- Rockefeller, Mather, Wade, Gund,
Brush, Severance and Hanna, to
name a few.
As industrial Cleveland grew,
many of these once-stunning
mansions fell into disrepair and
were destroyed to make room for
businesses, highways and industry.
Dan Ruminski is hopeful that
Cleveland can reclaim that lost
glory by creating a virtual Millionaires Row exhibit and museum to
learn about its grand history.
Dan is a lifelong resident of the
Cleveland area currently living for
the past 31 years on six acres in
Chesterland, which was formerly
part of the Circle W Farm, owned
by Walter and Virginia White. Walter was the youngest of the White
brothers, founders of White Motors. Dan has developed the property into many palatial gardens
that reflect the gardening style
and characteristics of the great
mansions once owned by Cleveland’s prominent figures.

At the September Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Board of Directors
Meeting, the BWC approved the
“Another Billion Back” proposal
of Governor John Kasich. “Another Billion Back” includes a
$1 billion rebate to 3,800 public
sector employers and approximately 184,000 private sector
employers, as well as several
new programs targeting workplace safety.
The rebate, like the one issued
last year, is possible because of
sound fiscal management that
led to strong investment returns.
BWC will begin issuing checks
in October to employers that
have current mailing addresses
on file with the agency. The rebates will equal 60 percent of
premiums eligible employers
paid during the July 1, 2012
through June 30, 2013 policy
year for private employers and
the 2012 calendar year for public employers.
To be eligible, the BWC decided
to move the effective date of
“Another Billion Back” from
9/5/14 to 9/10/14 for rebate
eligibility. This means that employers had to be active, reinstated, debtor in possession, or
combined with an effective date
on or before 9/10/14 as of the
9/26/14 snapshot date.

Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce
Letter from Jeffrey Sivyer
Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce Board President & Pastor at The Grove Church
Chaucer was quoted as saying, “All good things must come to an end.”
I was thinking these days how
the warm summer breezes turn
cold, how the ice cream shops
close, and the community pools
shut down. Even though this
is true, your Painesville Area
Chamber of Commerce really
doesn’t know the words shut
down, or slow down for that
matter - we keep going and going
and going! There are so many
exciting things happening and
more to come. Even as summer gives way to fall, and fall to winter,
the board leadership gives way to a fresh team to lead us into the
next chapter of working together to build a healthy economy and
improve the quality of life in Lake County.
I have had the privilege for the last two years of being the president. It has had its’ challenges but was made much easier by the talented
and professional staff of Linda Reed, Executive Director, and
Kathleen Obrenski, Administrative Assistant. In 2015, as we
work to blend the best that Madison/Perry and the Painesville
Chambers have to offer, we invite your continued support and
membership. Watch closely on website www.painesvillechamber.org
for our November and December events and make sure you stop
and say Hi and share with me what you like best about being part
of a vibrant organization like the PACC!
At our Annual Awards Banquet to be held on January 30, 2015, I
hope to share all the great things that are happening as I hand the
gavel to Dave Komjati from Key Bank. He will be a great asset to
our board!
Let me close by sharing a quote from what many consider to
be the wisest man to have lived, Solomon, he writes, “There is a
time for everything, and a season for every activity under the
heavens... What do workers gain from their toil? God has made
everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the
human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from
beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people
than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them
may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this
is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure
forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it.”
(Ecc. 3:1, 9-14)

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease can begin some 15 years before symptoms of mild cognitive impairment, or long before
the beginning signs of dementia surface.
If you have any of the symptoms contact your doctor or an Alzheimer care facility.
Stage 1 Normal Stage 2 Normal Aged Forgetfulness Free of objective or subjective symptoms of cognition and functional decline and also free of associated behavioral and mood changes. No longer can recall names as well as they could 5 or 10 years previously. Difficulties in concentration and in finding the correct word when speaking are common. Persons with these symptoms do decline at greater rates than similarly aged persons. Distracted in preparing a recipe or forget the rules of a card game. Bursts of anger for no reason, becoming depressed or confused, or uncharacteristically clinging to a family member. Spouse or partner complains that you are forgetting social engagements at an increasing rate or that you repeat questions often. Show little or no initiative in reaching out to friends and stare at the TV for hours or sleep all day. Stage 3 Mild Cognitive Impairment (Lasts for 7 years) Manifest deficits which are subtle, but which are noted by persons who are closely associated with the individual. Repeat queries. Persons who are still working, job performance may decline. Declines in their ability to organize/plan complex social events, such as dinner parties. Experience anxiety. Stage 4 Mild Alzheimer’s Disease (Lasts for 2 years) Decreased ability to manage instrumental (complex) activities of daily life such as finances, to prepare meals for guests. Difficulty writing the correct date and the correct amount on the check. Recent holiday or a recent visit to a relative, may or may not, be recalled. Mistakes in recalling the day of the week, month or season of the year may occur. Can generally recall their correct current address. Seems less emotionally responsive probably due to denial of the deficit. Withdraws from participation in activities such as conversation. Stage 5 Moderate Alzheimer’s Disease (lasts for 1.5 years) Stage 6 Moderately Severe Alzheimer’s Disease (Lasts for 2.5 years) Ability to choose proper clothing to wear for the weather conditions and /or for the daily circumstances (occasions). Wear the same clothing day after day unless reminded to change. Frequently cannot recall such major events and aspects of the current lives as the name of the current president, the weather conditions of the day, or their correct current address. May not recall the names of some of the schools which they attended for many years, and from which they graduated. Correct year may not be recalled. Educated person has difficulty counting backward from 20 by 2s. Lost the ability to choose their clothing without assistance. Require assistance in putting on their clothing. Put their clothing on backward, they may have difficulty putting their arm in correct sleeve, or they may dress themselves in the wrong sequence. Put their street clothes on over their night clothes. Lose the ability to bathe independently without assistance. Place the toilet tissue in the wrong place. Will forget to flush the toilet properly. Urinary incontinence occurs first, and then fecal incontinence occurs. Confuse wife with their mother or otherwise misidentify or be uncertain of the identity of close family members. Begin to fidget, to pace, to move objects around and place items where they may not belong, or to manifest other forms of purposeless or inappropriate activities. Fear, frustration and shame regarding their circumstances, as well as other factors, patients frequently develop verbal outbursts, and threatening, or even violent, behavior may occur. Can no longer survive independently, they commonly develop a fear of being left alone. Stage 7 Severe Alzheimer’s Disease (Lasts for 1.5 years) Require continuous assistance with basic activities of daily life. Speech has become so circumscribed, as to be limited to approximately a half dozen intelligible words. Once speech is lost, the ability to ambulate independently (without assistance) is invariably lost. After the patients lose the ability to ambulate independently, they lose the ability also to sit up independently. Will fall over when seated unless there are arm rests to hold the patient up in the chair. Lose the ability to smile. Grimacing facial movements are observed in place of smiles. Lose the ability to hold up their head independently. Physical rigidity of major joints. Cause of death is pneumonia, aspiration being one common cause of terminal pneumonia, infected decubital ulcerations. Vulnerable to all of the common causes of mortality in the elderly including stroke, heart disease and cancer. Lantern of Madison, an Alzheimer care facility, 2041 Hubbard Road, Madison, OH 44057 Ph. November General Membership Sponsor The Lake County Visitors Bureau may have different connotations to
residents and chamber of commerce members. The Bureau does much
more than pass out visitor information. The Bureau is an independent,
non-profit, countywide, destination marketing agency. The Bureau is not
part of the county operations, which we are often mistakenly
considered. However, we have Commissioner Judy Moran on our Board
of Trustees, repartee with Lake County Commissioners and their top
staff. And the Lake County Hotel/Motel Tax Department which audits
hotels, collects the hotel occupancy taxes monthly and reimburses the
Bureau.
So, the crucial message the Bureau tries to impart to the community is
that the Bureau does not use any local taxes to function. We rely on
“heads in beds,” hotel occupancy and membership dues to function with
two per cent of a three percent countywide Lake County hotel
occupancy tax.
Most of our marketing endeavors are outside of a 50 mile radius and
beyond. The Bureau has two main marketing missions- social media
with our wunderkind Community Engagement Manager, Elizabeth Connor. Elizabeth has pushed the social media
envelope beyond Facebook and other platforms with new programs like Geo Tours and Insta Tour.
Traditional marketing and publicity are coordinated by myself with ad creation and placements in over 30 publications plus
many digital platforms outside Lake County; travel writer and motorcoach conferences, familiarization tours of Lake
County; website update;, publication of the Visitor Guide, and much more.
The Bureau has won numerous state and local awards for our marketing programs. Please view our new drone/hexicopter
Lake County video, which I directed with a specialized drone production company at www.lakevisit.com which was a
finalist in Ohio Travel Association marketing competition, Elizabeth’s Insta Tour program was also a finalist.
We are the first Bureau, and one of the few, which has a Lake County Arts & Culture Grant Program funded from our
revenues. Each year the Bureau awards up to $75,000 to 15 entities or more based on specific criteria through a judging
process.
We encourage you to sign up for our monthly e-newsletter at www.lakevisit.com like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter
and Instagram. The Bureau is always seeking members to help offset our increasing advertising and social media costs,
and keep up with the competition, which is intense.
Visitors generated $804.8 million in business activity in 2013. The Bureau is truly an economic development engine.
Visitors are our spending machine.
And the Bureau requires no special subsidies or local taxes, just your support. Be a guest blogger. Even simple free
assistance by linking our website to your entity would be very helpful. Buy an ad in our Visitor Guide. Many visitors still
request a guide. it is often the first resource besides our website they use to find venues to spend money. Even if your
company is not a tourism venue, ads which generate awareness about Lake County’s business and corporate prowess
help our image. 80,000 copies are printed using five distribution companies plus reader response cards. Local venues like
real estate and relocation companies use our visitor guides. Individuals from all walks of life seek visitor guides for out of
town guests for weddings, family reunions and other functions.
Let’s celebrate Lake County, Lake Erie east’s Coastal Getaway Oasis as partners for a better Lake County.

PLUS: A downloadable e-version available on the PACC website!
The Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce is very excited to announce a major change to our 2015
Membership Directory.
This year’s directory will feature a very modern eye-catching magazine style design printed in full color
on gloss paper throughout our entire publication. Many of the same design features and content from
complete membership listings to event stories will remain the same.
As with past year’s directories, a percentage of the directory sales will help defray our chamber’s
operating expenses as well as providing us with a high profile marketing tool for the Painesville
community, Chamber of Commerce and our membership.
Don’t miss this opportunity to support our Chamber as well as showcase your business in the “new”
2015 Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce Directory.
Advertising sales will continue through November 15th.
