Friday 28th November
Dear Parents,
With only four weeks to go until we finish the 2014 school year things at Silverton
P.S. are becoming very hectic indeed. Last week we held another Transition Day
for our new Foundation students for 2015. They all looked so small and this
makes us realise how much this years Foundation children have grown and
developed throughout the year. It was also very nice to see the new families who
are coming into our school next year.
The Parents Association have been very busy in the past few weeks organising
their “trailer” raffle and sausage sizzle that was held at Bunnings last week. They
are also planning for the sausage sizzle to be held on Saturday 29th at school
during the Election Day voting. I hope you are able to support them either by
helping our on the day or purchasing sausages or a raffle ticket from the stall.
They are also relying on your support to make this a fabulous fundraiser for this
year.
Work on the new learning Centre is coming along very well. We are expecting
some new furniture to arrive this week with painting and carpeting to be
completed soon. It will become a very valuable asset for our school. The
children are eagerly waiting for this Learning Centre to be completed to see what
it is going to look like.
Loretta and Gracie have just returned from a trip to China where they were able
to visit our sister school their. Our sister school Yencheng No 1 school has 118
classes averaging around 60 students in each. The school has over 20 000
students on three campuses. They are certainly a lot bigger than our schools in
Australia. In the coming years we will be connecting and working closely with this
school. This is an excellent opportunity for us to work with a Chinese school and
for them to work with an Australian school.
Next week Amanda and I will be travelling to Singapore to attend the Microsoft
Bett Forum where we have been asked to talk about our school as well as taking
the opportunity to visit some schools to see how they operate. This is an
excellent opportunity to connect with other high performing schools from all over
the Asian area.
As we are well down the track of planning our school structure for 2015 it is
important that you advise the school office if your child/ren will not be attending
Silverton PS in 2015 and to which school they will be attending. Already we
know of some children who are shifting house and will be moving to new areas in
2015. It certainly makes our planning more accurate if we know early about your
plans for next year.
Have a good week.
Regards
Tony

Term 4, Week 8, and next week we start dating December — Enough said! However there are
enough school days left to remind you of our School Breakfast Program.
SILVERTON PRIMARY SCHOOL BREAKFAST PROGRAM
AN UPDATE FROM MRS PAULA YATES
The Breakfast Club at Silverton Primary is an opportunity for students to have a healthy start to
the school day. We are extremely excited to announce that we have been kindly donated a much
needed new toaster from Dr. Sandeep Bhagat. Dr. Bhagat has also generously offered to support
our Breakfast Program by donating and his time and food. In 2015 we will be seeing Dr. Bhagat
and his colleague Dr. Raghav on Tuesdays and at a new time of Thursday morning so make sure
you say hello and welcome them into our school community.
Below is a shot biography of both Dr. Sandeep Bhagat and Dr. Raghav;
Dr. Sandeep Bhagat is a specialist palliative care physician looking after people with terminal
illnesses at home in the South East catchment including Dandenong. "As a migrant I strongly
believe in giving back to the country and looking after our fellow community members."
Dr. Raghav is a consultant neurologist and Senior Lecturer supervising specialist physician
trainees at Monash Health, Victoria. He has a long standing interest in Yoga and spirituality. He
consults at his rooms in Dandenong.
We warmly welcome both doctors to our school community.
A VERY USEFUL AND MUCH NEEDED GIFT TO SILVERTON STUDENTS
Children are welcome in Learning Centre 4
on Tuesdays and Thursdays (8.30-850) to
share in some talk and toast. We have been
very fortunate to be able to extend this offer
beyond the Winter months due to the
generosity of donations of both food and voluntary assistance of parents and staff. Added
to this we have some Community Volunteers
(Dr Sandeep Bhagat and Dr Sanjay Raghav)
who are working around their busy schedule
to come in on Thursdays to help cook and
Sandeep, Sanjay, Paula, Loretta, Jasvinder
serve the toast for the children. Mrs Paula
Yates (Foundation Teacher) has done an outstanding job this year to coordinate and promote the
Program. As mentioned previously we have also had parents come forward this year to assist.
So if you happen to be bringing your children / grandchildren into school, please know that you
are very welcome to help—just come forward. Beyond giving your time, it’s not complicated. The
toaster is automatic and the bread and margarine and spreads are all provided. There’s a bit of
tidying up to do at the end. Extra hands help our teachers tremendously as they need to be on
duty to greet their students in the Learning Centres — not forgetting and teach them too! Early
Bird Reading happens in LC4—so the beautiful aroma of toast provides an added incentive for
the children to stop by in the morning. Added to this, it’s a nice way for parents to have some
adult time—hopefully meeting up with friends
and/or meeting new people and making new
friends within our school.
A SPECIAL THANKS FROM SILVERTON
STAFF
“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,"
said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you
say to yourself?"
"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do
you say, Piglet?"
Sandeep, Sanjay, Loretta , Tony, Jasvinder
"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully. "It's the same thing," he said.”

Valuable Learner November
Knowledgeable
Georgia Starfas
Georgia shows that she is a knowledgeable student and person through her everyday actions.
She gathers information and experiences from the world around her and applies this learning
to everything she does. Georgia understands that a combination of her prior learning, the
gathering of new information and a readiness to learn will help her today and in the future.
During Discovery Time she looks to challenge herself and always asks deep and meaningful
questions to be able to undertake her projects and produce pieces that she is happy with. One
of the projects Georgia took on was the creation of 3D objects. She persevered in creating an
egg person, undertaking research during Discovery Time and at home. She then used her
knowledge and outgoing personality to teach three foundation students how to plan and
produce their own 3D objects. Georgia was also asked questions by a newspaper
photographer, who found I hard to believe her ability to explain in detail how she created her
3D objects and the maturity of the conversations she had.
It is not only during Discovery Time, but across the whole curriculum that she applies herself to
gain and share knowledge. In Chinese she participates and once she has an understanding,
likes to help others. During Numeracy, Literacy and all other specialists she is the same.
Without trying she leads others, through the use of knowledge and confidence.
Georgia should be very proud of herself, making sure she is the best learning she can be and
gain as much knowledge as she can. This knowledge is gained both from teacher guidance
and self-perseverance. Well done :c)
