Dear Parents,
We have had an excellent start to the 2015 school year. All Foundation students
and other new students have started well and are making friends in their new school.
SCHOOL LEADERS
On Monday 9th February we were fortunate to have Leonie Balderstone, Director of
Heritage Kindergarten, present our School Leaders with their leadership badges at a
whole school assembly. Mrs Balderstone talked about Leadership and the
importance for school leaders to be good role models both within and outside the
school. Congratulations to all our 2015 School Leaders.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CHILD
It was good to see so many parents at our ‘Getting to Know You’ interviews last
week. This was a great opportunity for you to talk about your child and their special
interests and learning needs with their teacher. Thank you to all parents who
attended or made themselves available by either email or a phone call.
HOUSE DAY
Our first House day for 2015 was a great success. Throughout the day the students
worked together in groups competing in a variety of challenges. Congratulations to
Grevillea (Red House) for taking out first place.
BRASS BEDLAM
Last Friday all students participated and enjoyed the performance from the Brass
Bedlam. Katy and Bernie played music from different movies and TV shows to
music around the world. The students were introduced to different brass instruments
and were shown how the first brass horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba developed in
a very entertaining way. Congratulations to all students for their wonderful
involvement and behaviour throughout the whole performance.
We hope all our Grade 6 students and staff have a wonderful week at Camp
Curumbene. Grade 5 students are also heading to Sovereign Hill today
(Wednesday) so we hope they enjoy their experience as well.
Regards
Amanda Prosser

Rubbish free lunches
At Silverton Primary School, the environment is very important to us. That is why it is important for us to bring
rubbish-free lunches.
Rubbish-free lunches, also known as nude food, is basically food that does not contain any rubbish. We are
hoping to reduce the amount of rubbish that goes to the landfill by encouraging people bringing rubbish free
lunches.
Rubbish that goes in the bin ends up in landfill. The rubbish in the landfill produces a greenhouse gas called
methane too much greenhouse gas causes global warming, which is making the earth hotter. Another problem
landfill causes is leachate. Leachate is water that has dripped through the rubbish and become dirty contaminated
water. If leachate is not pumped or treated it can pollute ground water supplies and waterways.
That is why we are encouraging Silverton students to bring rubbish free lunches and to help our environment.

Dear Students, Parents and Families
A Message from the School Nurse—Visiting this Term
PRIMARY SCHOOL NURSES
Primary School Nurses offer a health check for all Prep students in Government, Catholic and
Independent Schools and English Language Centres. They also provide health assessment and
support for children in Grades 1 to 6 where a parent or teacher has a concern.
The school has provided Foundation and Selected Students with a questionnaire about your
child’s health, development and wellbeing for you to complete during your child’s first year of
school. This information assists the nurse to undertake a health assessment of your child and
provide you with follow-up information and advice if needed.
Gaylene Petchell, ‘Visiting Primary School Nursing Program’ will visit our school this term.
As School Nurse, Gaylene will:
 Contact families or assess prep children as relevant to responses in the School Entrant
Health Questionnaire.
 Assess children in Years 1-6. If you would like your child to be seen,
Referral Forms are available from the Assistant Principal’s Office (Loretta Sutherland—Student Wellbeing)
 Assess children who are newly arrived from overseas
 Follow-up children where school nurse intervention was previously required
 Provide general health information to the school community where requested
HELPFUL LEARNING BEHAVIOURS AND CHARACTERISTICS FOR
SILVERTON STUDENTS:
Valuing and respecting rights of all, positive in self-esteem, academic achievers, lifelong learners
Congratulations to all our students who are going about their school work with such vigour and
enthusiasm—this week at school and for some students—Off Site (G6 Camp / Central Victoria)
& (Grade 5 Excursion/Ballarat). It is very pleasing and impressive to see learning in action.
Our Valuable Learning Habits provide specific Helpful Learning Behaviours:-
Pride, Risk Taker, Communicator, Open Minded, Caring, Well Balanced, Inquirer, Thinker,
Reflective, Knowledgeable
These qualities are beneficial for helping us lead a happy, physically healthy, mentally healthy and
productive life.
Teachers and Parents share a common desire for our children to become independent,
confident and resilient people. Be on the look out for when you see your children
exhibiting these behaviours. ‘Catch’ them being good and doing the right thing and tell
them you like what you see. Maybe over the next week or so just quietly observe the way
your child interacts with other children and adults. Are they developing their social and
interactive skills? Are they patient? Do they offer to help out? Are they kind in the way
they talk about others? Comment on the way your child gets along with others. Praise
and Recognition from a loved and respected adult greatly assist children attain and
develop the attributes needed for learning and living.
PRACTICAL ROAD SAFETY TIPS
We need to have our children at school before Bell –Time (8.50 Monday and 9.00
Tuesday—Friday) and just as importantly, if we’re not using OSHcare After school, we
need to collect them at the end of the day 3.15. However we need to have respect for the
neighbouring residents and be responsible citizens obeying Road Rules and Parking
Signs—with SAFETY FIRST for all of our children and families. The roads around our
school are busy— Double parking, U-Turns are NO NO’s! Sometimes that might mean
leaving home earlier, parking further away and walking a little further. It might seem
convenient to run across the road but you will help your child learn to do the right thing by
walking the extra distance to the School Crossing and let the Crossing Supervisor guide
you across the road. Consider it ‘Service With A Smile”
Thanks for taking the time to read these messages. Have a good week.
