Dear Friends,
An Annual Report is a moment in time to highlight many moments. This past
year there were moments of assessment, moments of information gathering,
moments of learning, and moments of setting bold goals in fundraising, our
Early Learning Center (ELC), membership, and just about everything that we
do. As we look back over the year that just ended we would like to highlight
some of the many moments that bring us great pride!
In December, following our last Annual Meeting, we were fortunate Sandy
Cohen volunteered to lead our Annual Campaign. Sandy challenged our
community to raise $200,000 more than the previous year. The campaign
volunteers embraced this challenge, our community rallied, and the campaign
got off to a strong start. What happened next was perhaps the biggest moment
of the past year. We received the extraordinary commitment from the Alexander
Grass Foundation for a million dollar gift if our community could raise
$150,000 in new and/or increased gifts by June 30th. Our community, full of
renewal and hopefulness, met and in fact exceeded the challenge! At the close of
our fiscal year on August 31st the 2014 Annual Campaign raised $200,000 more
than the 2013 Annual Campaign!
The same time the campaign was in full swing, we were beginning efforts to
grow our ELC, develop our Discover CATCH program, secure funding from
new sources like grants and EITC, expand our membership, and grow personal
training. We also placed a strong emphasis on security and customer service.
The early results and feedback are promising. Our enrollment in the ELC grew
by more than 15% last school year, and new funding was received to implement
Discover CATCH, support scholarships, and several other programs and
services. We are proud to share that most of our programs did demonstrate
growth.
We also spent many moments meeting and planning with our sights set on
continuing the momentum into 2015. This year is the beginning of our 100th
anniversary celebration which will be full of opportunities to remember our
history, celebrate our past, and focus on our future. We plan to launch new
programs and expand existing ones. Through our assessment we identified areas
where we have gaps, we know where we can and should build capacity and we
have plans in place, some already in action and others set to launch.
We are grateful for our dedicated Board of Trustees, our donors, our members,
and our many volunteers who are at the heart of our work. We recognize and
thank our staff who work daily to create moments that will be memorable well
into the future.

Early Learning Center (ELC)
started a new initiative called
Discover CATCH. We are creating
an environment where children
learn about physical activity,
health education, and healthy
eating behaviors. Part of this
engaging program is maintaining
a community garden where the
children can plant fruits and
vegatables. They get to enjoy
the produce during their meals
at the ELC, share them with
their families, and learn how to
incorporate them in their daily
lives.

to support Discover CATCH.
With their generosity we were
able to get this program off
the ground, along with all
necessary supplies.
Thank you!
We celebrated another summer of
fun with a lifetime of memories from
activities including sports, games, drama,
swimming, arts and crafts, music, and
Israeli culture at Green Hills Swim
Club. This year the campers enjoyed
Color Wars, Super Hero Day, Teva Bus,
Crazy Hat Day, and much more!
Thanks to a grant from The Josiah W. and Bessie H. Kline Foundation we will be
able to repair the Pump House for the outdoor pool at the Green Hills Swim Club.
The PJ Library provides families raising Jewish children
aged 6 months to 8 years old with a FREE treasury of
Jewish books and music every month. This program also
offers family friendly activities throughout the year for PJ
Library participants and the community to enjoy.
Senior
Programming
The Senior Adult Club of the JCC celebrated their 54th Anniversary
in 2014. This 60 plus community meets Tuesdays and Thursdays for a
delicious lunch every week. They also go on adventures throughout the
year, such as theater trips to the Allenberry Theater, a concert with Stuart
Malina and his family, and week-long excursions to Boston and Montreal
this past summer.
Staying Fit at the JCC became our main focus this year. With new
Suspension Training classes and Aqua Zumba at Green Hills Swim Club
the possible ways to get in shape are endless. Due to popular demand we
brought back the racquetball and adult basketball leagues, and had our
annual 5K Walk/Run and Spin-A-Thon.

Affinity Progr ams
Each year we have been able to grow and develop our affinity programs
for our donors and this past year was no exception.
The Women’s Philanthropy annual
luncheon had 50 women in attendance,
featuring the President of Dickinson
College, Dr. Nancy Roseman. Every year
this group celebrates women who made
a significant impact in their communities
through philanthropic giving, advocacy,
and volunteerism.
The Cardozo Society annual Continuing Legal Education program
presented the documentary, The Last White Knight, and featured a civil
rights-themed discussion. Sixty-five legal professional attended and many
community members came out to view the film.
The Maimonides Society presented their first Continuing Medical
Education program about the Affordable Care Act, thirty people
attended and learned how the new law impacts them as medical
professionals.
These programs touched more people than ever before thanks to the
dedication of volunteer organizers and the program underwriters.

A heartfelt thank you to the Alexander Grass Foundation for
caring about our community, and believing in us with their
investment of $1 million in our work and FUTURE!
With these funds we will truly be able to grow. We will be able
to invest in Jewish Education, from our Early Learning Center,
Discover CATCH, and PJ Library to lifelong learning, and
our Ambassador program. We will engage all ages
in our work by providing programming
that resonates, such as youth and young
adult development, Shabbat across the
Susquehanna Valley, Next Generation
Leadership, and much more. We will
strengthen our existing programs and
build capacity.
Alex Grass, founder of Rite Aid Corporation was
actively involved in many philanthropic ventures centering on his
Jewish faith in Harrisburg and Israel. Grass was a tremendous
success, and he wanted to inspire others to give back to their
communities. His legacy continues through his family and the
Foundation.
