ear People of St. Stephen,
Happy 15th anniversary to all of
you who are part of St. Stephen
parish.
As we celebrate our 15th anniversary as a
parish this weekend, we also begin a new
liturgical year as we celebrate the first
Sunday of Advent. The first Sunday Masses
of our parish were celebrated on the first
Sunday of Advent, November 28/29,
1999, at Prairie View Junior High across
the street from our church. For me, this
weekend is a time both to be grateful for
the blessings that the Lord has given us and
to renew our commitment to strive to be
all that the Lord calls us to be both as
individuals and as a parish. Our Advent
theme this year, “Lord, shape us to
transform our hearts and our community”,
comes from the first reading of this
Sunday’s Mass. The prophet Isaiah uses the
image of God as the potter and God’s
people as the clay, calling us as the Lord’s
people to allow the love and values of Jesus
to transform and shape us. We pray that
the gift of Christ’s love will continually be
present and life-giving to us.
This weekend we have particular reason to
be thankful for God’s blessings as we look
back on the growth of our parish over these
past 15 years. 15 years ago this weekend
about 200 people attended a 5 PM Saturday
Mass and a 10 AM Sunday Mass in Prairie
View’s cafeteria. Deacons Joe and Ken,
Karen Opyd, and I - our original staff –
were thrilled that so many people came.
Over the years we have been blessed by the
efforts of so many people who have helped
our parish family to grow. This weekend
for me is an opportunity to thank God for
the deacons, priests, lay staff, and many,
many parishioners whose commitment of
their time and talent have enabled us to do
the Lord’s work here at St. Stephen. The
people are too numerous to name without
leaving someone out. The people of St.
Stephen have always been our best
resource. This weekend I ask you to join
me in praying for our parishioners who
have died over these years. Many who have
contributed greatly to our parish have
joined the multitude of the saints in
heaven. We remember and pray for them
on this special occasion.
The readings of this Sunday’s Mass and the
spirit of Advent call us to renew our
commitment to growing in Christ’s love.
In reflecting on Archbishop Cupich’s
comments during his installation week, I
find a number of ideas that give direction
to a renewed commitment as a parish. The
Archbishop encouraged us to proclaim the
message of the Lord’s love with conviction
while at the same time having an openness
to listen to others, seeking to be alert to
wherever the Holy Spirit is revealing God’s
love. The Lord calls us to continue to strive
to be a welcoming community. Jesus
especially is present to the brokenness in
life, bringing his message of mercy and love
not to perfect people (there are none) but
to all of us in our weakness and need,
inviting us to grow to be all that God wants
us to be as individuals and as a parish. Jesus
is always present to us, walking with us as
we move through life with all its joys and
struggles. The Advent theme of being
mindful and alert reminds us to keep our
hearts open to the Lord. Staying connected
to Christ and seeking to help others to find
their own connection with the Lord is a
good focus for the mission that we can
embrace for our parish’s future. The Parish
Transformation process that we are
completing has generated some specific
ideas on growing as a parish in response to
the Lord’s call to live his love in our world.
This process will help to give some
direction for our future efforts as a parish. I
will be sharing more with you about the
ideas in the Parish Transformation process
in the weeks ahead.
As we embrace our future as a parish, a
final thought emphasized by Archbishop
Cupich is very important to me. One of
Jesus’ continuing messages to His disciples
is “Do not be afraid.” The future does
present real challenges to our church and
to our parish. Remembering that the Lord
is always with us and being open to the
Lord and His strength will sustain us as we
seek to live the Gospel and will open our
hearts to the new ways in which the Lord is
leading us as we seek to respond to His
call.
In gratitude for all God’s blessings in our
first 15 years, and with trust in God’s
presence with us as we move into our
future, we celebrate our 15th anniversary
this weekend. I invite you to take a look at
the pictures from the life of our parish
displayed in the narthex and in the large
meeting room. Thank you to everyone
who has contributed in any way to the
work of St. Stephen parish in our first 15
years. Please pray that the Lord may bless
us and strengthen us as we continue our
journey of faith together.

humble beginnings in a house on Mallow Drive and weekend Masses at Prairie
View Junior High to our present day facility, I wouldn’t trade the experience for
anything. My 15 years here as a deacon have given me the opportunity to meet
so many faithful people that I have ministered to from Baptisms, Weddings, 1st
Communions to Funerals. I have shared my personal life with you through my
homilies and bulletin articles. I have shared in your lives and you have shared in
mine. We have made so many lasting friendships together. I have been blessed to
have worked with many people in this parish from day one, namely Deacon Joe
Stalcup, Karen Opyd and most of all Fr. Jay Finno. The four of us started this
adventure together with the Holy Spirit’s guidance and have never looked back.
We have been blessed to have been joined by other Deacons and their wives and
Priests and staff along the way.
Everyone loves our stained glass window behind the altar not only because it
tells the story of our faith but when I look at that window, it has a lot of
symbolism for me as well. When you look at that window, you see hundreds of
pieces of stained glass, which represents the people and staff at St. Stephen. It’s
all held together by a massive frame and that’s Fr. Jay. He is the framework who
holds everything together. All those pieces of glass would fall if it weren’t for the
massive frame holding us together. We have been blessed to have a spiritual
leader in Fr. Jay all these years of our existence as a parish. We don’t know what
the future holds for us all but when you put your life in God’s hands and let the
Holy Spirit work within you, you just know things will work out ok.
On a personal note, this journey wouldn’t have been complete without my
beautiful wife Laurie by my side every step of the way. She worked behind the
scenes in ministering with me in forming the ministries we have been associated
with here at St. Stephen. Laurie and I have both been blessed to have shared in
your life experiences with us throughout
these 15 years and you have shared in ours.
May we share many more memories
together doing God’s work here on earth.

St. Vincent De Paul Food Collection
Next Saturday/Sunday, December 6 and 7, will be our monthly food collection for the St. Vincent
De Paul Ministry to help support the Tinley Park food pantry. Non-perishable items such as breakfast
cereal, pasta, pancake mixes, canned goods should be bagged and left in the church Narthex. Paper
towels, toiletry paper, laundry detergent and cleaning supplies are always welcomed. St. Stephen
Parish has created a section of the food pantry for gluten free foods. Please mark your bag “gluten free
items” if you include those in your donations. Please help our parishioners in need and thank you so
much for your continued generosity and support .

Book Discussion “Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody”
The final session of the book discussion “Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody”, will be this Sunday, November 30. Like our book

Our Lady of Fatima PILGRIM Statue
Please come join us for the Rosary on Saturday, November 29 at 8 pm; on Sunday, November 30 through Saturday, December 6 at
7:30 pm in the Daily Chapel. The traveling statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be with us. This is a wonderful family way to begin
Advent.
Seeking help for the 7am Mass
If you attend the 7am Mass each Sunday, you might notice an absence of an altar server. The fact is that we do not have boys or girls
willing to sign up for such an early Mass. To that end, I’m appealing to adults to become an adult server to help serve at the 7am Mass
on Sundays. John Lisicich has been serving in their place for a number of years. John only serves because his wife Pat is one of the
Mass coordinators for that Mass. We are grateful for his service. If we could get four adults to volunteer at the 7am Mass, it would
mean you would serve once a month. John would be willing to sit with you during Mass for a few weeks and show you the way to
serve. Please consider this appeal for help serving at the 7am Mass and make the Mass flow more smoothly helping the priest and

Gluten Free Hosts Available
The Benedictine Sisters, who have been providing our altar breads since we began as a parish, have developed a communion host that will benefit all
those who suffer from celiac disease. Celiac disease is a digestive disorder triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains. Since Church
law and tradition require that the Eucharistic bread be wheat based, some Catholics have been unable to receive the host because they cannot tolerate the
gluten in altar breads. Some Catholics can receive only the cup because the gluten in the host is a danger to their health. The Benedictine Sisters have
developed a low gluten host that is safe for most people with celiac disease and which meets all Church requirements and is approved for use at Mass.
The gluten content of these breads is 0.01%, a level which the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland calls perfectly safe for the vast
majority of celiac sufferers. The Sisters still recommend that individual celiac sufferers consult with their doctor before using the breads. These hosts have
now been improved to the point that we can keep a small supply of consecrated hosts in the tabernacle for anyone who needs them. If you have this
need, please mention it to the priest, deacon, or one of the ushers before Mass. However, if for some reason you do not see someone before Mass, just
mention to whoever is distributing communion that you need a gluten-free host. We will always have a small supply available.

Jesus said, “Anyone who starts to plow and then keeps looking back is of no use for the Kingdom of God”, Luke 9:62. Be mindful, be
conscious of each moment, growing in an awareness of God’s presence in every moment of each day.

Advent Season
The word “Advent” (Coming) indicated how Christians view the four-week
period preceding the Nativity of our Lord. It is a time of preparation for an
even more intimate coming of the Lord to you and all of us.
When I come to visit a friend, I am present to him. Coming results in
presence. Of course, the Lord is already present to his people. Therefore,
his coming at Christmas should result in a more intimate presence. People
(friends, lovers) who get to know and love one another better are becoming
more intimately, more personally, present to one another. It is a question of
opening up and sharing one another’s personality. Our preparation for
Christ’s coming should consist in an ever more opening up to him who wants
to share our human condition in loving care.
By preparing for the Lord’s coming time and again at Christmas, Christians
prepare for his final coming which will be decisive for you and all human
beings. “Now we watch for the day hoping that the salvation promised us
will be ours when Christ our Lord will come again in his glory” (Preface of

Dear Families of St. Stephen,
As we are about to begin the Advent season, it is time for us at St. Stephen to begin to prepare to
celebrate the birth of Jesus. Your children, grades 1 and up, are invited to be a part of the Christmas Eve
Nativity Liturgy. This year St. Stephen will be celebrating a 5pm Mass on Christmas Eve, at which the
children will be presenting the Christmas Gospel. We hope to involve many of our children in this
experience. All parts are non-speaking. A few special parts, grades 3 and up, will be selected by lottery.
While we have a few costumes, families will need to provide most costumes which are all
very basic.
Please consider the schedule of rehearsals below. All rehearsals are mandatory. Rehearsals will be
in church on the following dates:

As part of our Advent observance we invite everyone to write a prayer expression, personal intention or gratitude for
blessings on the sheets that are available on the table in the narthex. Please write your prayer and family name on the
sheet (copies are in one basket) and place the sheet in the second basket. These intentions will then be placed in a basket
placed by the altar. By posting our prayers we show our willingness to let “The Lord, shape us to transform our hearts
and our community” during Advent.
Advent Candle Lighting Sign-up Sheet
There is a sign-up sheet for those wishing to light the Advent Candles at the beginning of Mass.
Please check in with the usher no later than 10 minutes before Mass starts. This way they know that you are here;
otherwise, they will look for someone to take your place. The sign-up sheet will be in the back of the church on the
usher’s table. Please remember to honor your commitment.
“The Little Blue Book” - An Advent Prayer Book
Advent begins on Sunday, November 30TH which is just around the corner. By the way, “Happy New Year”, the first Sunday of
Advent begins a new year for the Church based on the Church’s calendar. Advent is a time of preparation for and reflection upon the
birth of Jesus. To aid in the prayerful preparation for Advent “The Little Blue Book” written by Bishop Untener of Saginaw Michigan
offers a brief prayer for each day of Advent. “The Little Blue Book” is available in the magazine racks on the west wall of the narthex.
Please take one and use it for daily prayer during Advent. A donation of $1 is requested to pay for “The Little Blue Book”.

Relive that special night with a walk through the halls of the motherhouse at St. Francis Woods, 9201 W St. Francis Rd, Frankfort on

7th Grade Service Opportunity: Babysitting At 10am Mass
Confirmation Candidates: Get an early start on your service hours for next year! We are presently scheduling babysitting for 2015,
and you can begin doing your projects in February. Sign up now for your first choice in dates; 3 Sundays are needed to count for 1
project. 7th/8th/HS Students, please contact Babysitting Coordinator Pat Mullin at [email protected] to sign up. Babysitting for
children ages 15 months to 5 years is provided at 10am Mass. Parents, please come to room #158 ten minutes before mass to sign in;
directly following mass please return to sign out your child. For the safety of all, if your child is ill please do not bring them to the

MERCY HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS COLLECTION
Once again the St. Stephen Teen Group is sponsoring a collection of stocking stuffers and small gifts for the teens who live at Mercy
Home for Boys and Girls. There will be collection boxes in the Narthex the weekends of Nov. 29 & 30 and Dec. 6 & 7. Everything

“God’s Big Hug” Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our first meeting after summer break
will be Thursday December 4, at
10am in room 125/126 of the parish
offices. The Prayer Shawl Ministry is a
group of women from the parish who
meet monthly to knit or crochet
shawls for the sick, homebound, those
with terminal illnesses, and other
illnesses and to celebrate a happy
occasion. Our meetings are optional!
We meet on the 1st Thursday of each
month at 10am in room 125 of the
parish offices. Our ministry is open to
everyone—even if you don't have the
F.A.I.T.H. (FAITH
time to attend the meetings! Shawls
can be created at home on your own
time and own speed. The purpose of
the prayer shawl is to let the recipient
know that others care for them in
difficult times and are thinking of
them. On the knitter's part, it is a
prayerful process—from the selection
of color to the blessing of the yarn and
needles. The love of making knitted
and crocheted items and a deep caring
for others has been combined into a
prayerful ministry which reaches out
to those in need of comfort and

St. Stephen’s F.A.I.T.H. (faith and inspiration to
hope) Spiritual Healing Ministry continues with a
monthly prayer service at 7:30pm. The next
date is Wednesday December 10. The goal of
this ministry is to bring Christ’s healing love to
people struggling with illness and to support their
loved ones and caregivers. The foundation of this
ministry is an expectant faith, trusting that the
Lord Jesus will give us what we need. Through
our prayer, we put ourselves in the hands of
God, seeking His will and listening to His voice in
the depths of our hearts. Through prayer and
offering support, we seek to bring Christ’s
healing love to our parishioners who are
struggling with illness. The prayer service will
include quiet music, Scripture reading, a
reflection, intercessory prayer and an
solace. Donations of yarn as well as
monetary donations are always
welcome. It was noted that those
making shawls, to please keep our
measurements of 25” x 60” as our
guideline. This size makes for a perfect
fit for those receiving shawls. Please

Pamięć i oczekiwanie
„Rzecz ma się podobnie jak z człowiekiem, który udał się w podróż.” Podróże są domeną wakacji, a te już dawno za nami. Możemy jedynie wracać do
nich pamięcią, ożywianą chociażby przez oglądanie zdjęć i pamiątek, albo czekać z utęsknieniem na następne, snując marzenia i plany. Pamięć i
oczekiwanie. Przeszłość i przyszłość. Dwa wymiary, obejmujące o wiele więcej niż czas wakacyjnego odpoczynku. Przeszłość i przyszłość to kategorie,
którymi możemy także opisać działanie Boga w naszym życiu. A teraźniejszość? Czy ona również może być przestrzenią działania Boga w świecie i w
moim życiu?
Dzisiejsza Ewangelia ukazuje nam Jezusa, ukrytego pod postacią pana domu, który opuścił swoją własność i „udał się w podróż”. Jak łatwo możemy
ten obraz odnaleźć w swoim życiu. Bóg rzeczywiście „udał się w podróż”, opuścił mnie. Gdyby był ze mną nie spotkałyby mnie takie nieszczęścia, nie
cierpiałbym z powodu choroby, nie popadł w sidła alkoholizmu. Gdyby Bóg był ze mną lepiej pokierowałbym swoim życiem, wybrał lepszego
partnera, nie miał problemów z moimi dziećmi. Gdyby Bóg był ze mną nie byłbym teraz całkiem sam, opuszczony i zapomniany przez bliskich.
Bóg opuścił jednak nie tylko moje życie, opuścił także świat. Jak bowiem można inaczej wytłumaczyć głód, wojny, obozy zagłady, cierpienie
bezbronnych? Kiedyś, owszem, Bóg był obecny w tym świecie. Stworzył go, posłał swojego Syna, Jezusa, działał nawet w początkach Kościoła. Wierzę
w to, jestem przecież chrześcijaninem. Bóg był także obecny kiedyś w moim życiu – przyjąłem chrzest, byłem u Komunii Świętej.
Jako chrześcijanin wierzę również, że Bóg powróci z tej podróży. Mówi przecież dzisiaj w Ewangelii: „Czuwajcie (…), bo nie wiecie, kiedy pan domu
przyjdzie”. Wierzę, że jeszcze zainterweniuje w moim życiu i w historii świata, ale dopiero na końcu czasów. Co jednak pozostaje mi dziś, kiedy Bóg cały
czas jest w podróży?
Adwent, który właśnie rozpoczynamy tą niedzielą jest dobrą okazją do spojrzenia na swoje życie i szukania w nim Boga. On, choć może wydawać się
nieobecny na scenie mojego życia, nigdy tak naprawdę jej nie opuścił.
Jesteś chrześcijaninem! Czy wiesz, co to oznacza? Jesteś tym, który jest podobny do Chrystusa, mało tego – tym, który nosi Jezusa w sobie. Adwent w
porządku roku liturgicznego przygotowuje nas na Narodzenie Pana, na radosne uobecnianie tej tajemnicy w liturgii. Adwent jednak w moim i Twoim
osobistym życiu jest po to, abyś zatęsknił za Bogiem i przypomniał sobie, że On stał się Człowiekiem.
Jezus przychodząc na świat odmienił całkowicie bieg historii. Nie można już wydzielić tego, co święte i tego, co świeckie, sacrum i profanum. Jego
przyjście na świat sprawiło, że wszędzie można odnaleźć Boga, że On jest blisko każdego stworzenia, jest blisko Ciebie. Bliżej niż myślisz.
Zapytasz jednak, jak mogę tego doświadczyć? Przecież to w żaden sposób nie zmienia mojego życia i jego historii. Przecież nie czuję, że Bóg jest obok
mnie. Pozwól jednak, że ja też Ciebie zapytam: czy szukasz Boga w swoim życiu, obok siebie?
Człowiek z dzisiejszej Ewangelii, który udał się w podróż nie zostawił swojej posiadłości na pastwę losu. Owszem – zostawił dom, ale „powierzył
swoim sługom staranie o wszystko, każdemu wyznaczył zajęcie, a odźwiernemu przykazał, żeby czuwał.” Jego samego już tam nie ma - jest w podróży.
Teraz jednak kto inny zajmuje się jego dziedzictwem. Ten niedoskonały obraz pozwala nam spojrzeć na nasze życie, na moje i Twoje życie, w zupełnie
innym świetle. Bóg nie opuścił świata, ale pozwala działać człowiekowi, dał mu wolność. Właśnie ta wolność sprawia, że dużo bardziej niż poprzez
cudowne interwencje i łamanie wszelkich możliwych praw Bóg chce być obecny w świecie w sposób cichy i pokorny, bez świateł i krzyków, w cichej
przestrzeni ludzkiej miłości, dobroci i zaangażowania w ten świat.
Wezwanie do czuwania, które skierował dziś do każdego z nas Jezus, nie jest czymś abstrakcyjnym. To wezwanie, które domaga się osobistego
zaangażowania. Uważaj i czuwaj, czyli bądź uważny, szukaj Boga obok siebie, w swoim życiu. Może tam, gdzie do tej pory widziałeś tylko przypadek
dzięki Jego łasce zrozumiesz, że Przypadek to jedno z imion Boga, pod którym chce się Tobie przedstawić.
Tak często jednak o Nim zapominamy, oddalamy się od Niego, szukając własnych dróg. Może Ty też oddaliłeś się od Boga i myślisz, że jesteś już za
daleko, że nie ma już powrotu. Jak mogę dziś doświadczać Boga w moim życiu? Jak się do Niego zbliżyć? Przez dobre uczynki? Prorok Izajasz mówi dziś,
że „wszystkie nasze dobre czyny jak skrwawiona szmata”. Nie tędy zatem prowadzi droga do Boga. On proponuje Ci dzisiaj zmianę perspektywy
patrzenia. To nie Ty zbliżasz się do Boga, ale to On zbliża się do Ciebie. Bóg jest na tyle wielki, że pozwala się ograniczyć naszej ludzkiej wolności.
Szanuje ją do tego stopnia, że zbliża się do każdego z nas, jednocześnie pytając, czy dopuścimy Go do siebie. Decyzja należy do każdego z nas.
Bóg jest obecny także dziś, Jezus żyje. On pragnie być bardzo blisko Ciebie, Twoich problemów i codziennych spraw. Chce, abyś dzielił się z Nim
swoimi trudnościami i radościami, abyś przedstawiał Mu swoje marzenia i plany. Czeka jednak na Twoją uwagę i na Twoje zaproszenie. Nie musisz od
razu zmieniać wszystkich swoich czynów i planować poprawy całego życia. Zacznij od zmiany jego kierunku – na chwałę Boga Ojca, w jedności z
Jezusem. A jeśli tego chcesz, powtórz w swoim sercu za prorokiem Izajaszem: „Obyś rozdarł niebiosa i zstąpił”. Jezu, rozedrzyj niebiosa i zstąp do
mojego życia!
