or many people, their
idea of a good vacation
is visiting someplace
natural, either by
“roughing it” or staying in a
rustic cabin.
But that’s just another
summer for Karen Schumaker, who said, “My last
vacation was in 1990.”
Schumaker has been working — sometimes paid but
mostly as a volunteer — for
Camp Lookout near Montrose for the past 39 years.
Camp Lookout is a nondenominational camp sponsored by King’s Daughters
and Sons. Schumaker joined
the organization in 1980, and
she recently received a high
honor from the international
group.
She received the Unsung
Hero Award, given out to
women across the country
to “exemplary King’s Daughters and Sons’ members who
have made important and
lasting contributions, but not
necessarily been in the limelight of our organization,” according to the Fall 2014 issue
of The Silver Cross.
Schumaker was a paid
senior counselor in the early
years. From 1980 to 1992, she
was a paid director. But for
the past 22 summers, she has
volunteered as a camp board
chairperson and spends most
of her summer working with
the campers and the program.
During the school year,
Schmuaker has been in the
Catholic school system for
36 years. Schumaker served
many years as a grade school

East. “Second grade was
probably my favorite,” she
said.
More recently she took on
religious education duties for
Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary in West Point.
“A few years ago (Holy
Trinity administration)
wanted to emphasize the religious aspect of education,”
Schumaker said. “They told
me, ‘Why hire somebody
from the outside when we
have the ideal candidate
here?’”
But talking about one position is essentially the same
as talking about the other.
“I enjoy working with
children and teaching them
about God,” Schmuaker said.
At Holy Trinity, the
children supplement their
academic education with the
spiritual portion.
At Camp Lookout, “It’s
a great place you can go to
learn how to interact with
nature.
“Being a Christian, I see
how He influences our relations with others and our-
selves,” Schumaker said. She
then passes on that knowledge to the young campers.
The campers learn leadership skills as well.
The camp meets one week
at a time, with five girls
camps and just one boys
camp, with the camps running from Sunday afternoon
to Friday evening.
“When I was a senior
counselor,” Schumaker said,
“there were eight weeks of
girls camps, with no boys
camps. But the population is
smaller and there are lot of

Flynn can crank out page turners
‘Gone Girl’
is just one of
her hit novels
Gillian Flynn, that’s all you
need to know. I heard her being interviewed on NPR, the
source of many books I read,
and gave her a shot. I wasn’t
disappointed. Flynn is the
author of three barn burners:
“Gone Girl,” “Dark Places,”
and “Sharp Objects.” Talk
about books that you can’t
put down! My goodness. And
they’re pretty well written.
Flynn has been on the New
York Times best seller list for
eons.
You can get all three of her
best sellers in one set, called
“The Complete Gillian Flynn,” or purchase them singly.
Being lazy and not wanting
to troop out to the bookstore,
or library, I dialed up the
complete set on my Kindle.
Presto-chango! They fell into
my lap like candy. Real books
feel and smell good, but these
electronic readers have their
place. Don’t plan on doing
much of
EMPTY NEST anything
until you
have these
three books
read, which
doesn’t take
long, even
for me, and
I’m a slow
reader.

are extremely addictive and
may be habit forming.
“Gone Girl,” as I’m sure
you’re aware, has been made
into a blockbuster movie
starring Ben Affleck and
Rosamund Pike. I haven’t
seen the movie, but it’s had
rave reviews and, according
to most, does the book justice.
Which can be hard to accomplish. Flynn is a master
at characterization. Each
character she introduces to
the reader comes alive and,
for me, without fail, reminded
me of someone I know.
“Sharp Objects”....This
book gives a great insight
into the mental makeup of
“cutters.”
“Dark Places.” The saga of
Ben and Libby Day. Reminds
me a lot of some of Iowa’s
more famous family-murder
crimes.
I usually don’t get into suspense/drama, but a common
subject matter of all three
books, sociopathic women,
drew me in like a fly to molasses. And I was stuck.
Flynn employs some rather
cheap tricks to keep the
reader reading, like ending
a chapter right in the middle
of a tense scene, switching to
a flashback, then continuing
the tense scene in the following chapter. I just skipped the
flashback, went to the following chapter, then came back
to the flashback. I forgave her
for this writing ploy because
Flynn’s prose is right up

there with some of the best.
“There’s something disturbing about recalling a
warm memory and feeling
utterly cold.” “He should
cough out yellow Tweety Bird
feathers, the way he smiles
at me.” “His shirt wasn’t
wrinkled, but he wore it like
it was.” It’s her prose that I
admire and separates Flynn
from your common, ordinary,
whodunnit writers. She’s also
quite adept at writing from
the male, female, or adolescent point of view, which, ask
any writer, takes mega-talent.
Keep a dictionary handy.
Or, if you’re using a Kindle,
voila, move the cursor to the
word, and the internal dictionary coughs up the definition. Sweet. Flynn’s writing,
for me, was a vocabulary lesson — another sign of brains
and talent.
So, let the snow fly, and the
wind howl. If Flynn’s intriguing, highly-entertaining story
telling doesn’t get you sizzling, there’s always the hot
tub, or a workout at the gym.
Hmm, work out the mind, or
work out the body? Do both.
There’s a book holder on that

City of Christmas opens Thursday evening
KEOKUK — In spite of
uncooperative weather and
thanks to a lot of hard work
by a dedicated crew, for the
26th year, Rand Park is once
again a sparkling winter wonderland. The dedicated crew
has been transporting and
setting up the hundred plus
City of Christmas displays
so that the twenty-sixth anniversary display of the City
of Christmas will be ready to
open for the 2014 season on
Thanksgiving evening, Nov.
27 at 6 p.m.
As in the past, the 26th anniversary display of the City
of Christmas will showcase
several new displays and the
reappearance of many of the
old favorites that have been
part of City of Christmas
since its beginning in 1989.
Visitors will want to watch
for an ever more spectacular Candy Land including
jumping Gingerbread men,
new skaters and carolers
around the pond, a fire truck,
two new angels, and several
other fantastic new displays!
Everyone is urged to look
for their old favorites and
see if they can remember
when each display first appeared. Each year, thanks to
donations, more of the older
displays have bright new
LED lighting. Don’t miss the
dazzling new lighting on the
gazebo!
Crews led by Joe Shuman
have been working all month
to make sure all the displays
are set up and in prime condition for the opening of the
display. When asked Shuman
said, “We’ll be ready for the
Grand Opening night November 27th”.
City of Christmas 2014 will
feature over one hundred
displays and well over one
million lights. “We no longer
even try to count the total
number of lights in the park”
says committee member
Richard Malloy. “It’s not the
number of lights but it’s the
total effect of all the displays
and lights, especially the new
displays and new LED lights,
that make City of Christmas a
dazzling display”
“As happens each year
older displays have been
refurbished, changes have
been made to many of the displays with LED lighting, and
displays have been moved
to new locations. So come to
Rand Park for the 26th Anniversary of City of Christmas,
look for the new displays
and see if you can remember
when various long-time displays made their first appearance in the park,” said Jean
Meyer, Secretary-Treasurer
for City of Christmas. “Some
of our displays are now
twenty-six years old and then
there’s everything in between
on down to several that are
brand new for 2014.”
Visitors to City of Christmas will be able to tune into
the “Voice of City of Christmas” at 90.1 on their FM
radio dial as they near Rand
Park. They’ll be able to listen
to holiday carols, hear the
story of how City of Christmas began, and comments
about the various displays
as they travel through the
myriad of lights and displays.
The City of Christmas will
be open each night from Nov.
27 through Dec. 28. Following
the grand opening at 6 p.m..
on Nov. 27, hours are 5 p.m.
to 10 p.m., Sunday through
Thursday; 5 p.m. to midnight
Fridays and Saturdays; and 5
p.m. to 1 a.m. Christmas Eve
and Christmas Day. Please
note that the display may
close early some evenings if
winter weather causes traffic
to drop off or if safety on the
park roads cannot be maintained due to weather situations.
Step-on guides are available for bus tours that would
like to learn more about the
displays, how long each has
been a part of the whole display and the history of City
of Christmas as they travel
