Siblings reunited after 70 years
Children separated by father’s World War II service and mother’s departure

years of separation,
Jesse “Corky” Rye
of Revere, Mo., was
reunited this fall, with his
sister and brother in Keokuk.
“1941 was the last time I’d
seen them,” Rye said of his
siblings, Judith “Judy” Johnson of Gold Canyon, Ariz.,
and Robert “Bob” Overturf of
Malcom.
The native Keokuk siblings
were separated when Judy
and Bob and their brothers
Cherill and Dolphin were
placed in the Iowa Soldiers
Orphans Home in Davenport.
The children’s mother,
Emma Irene, had left the family. Their father, Theodore,
was drafted during World
War II. By the time he was
discharged from service,
three of the children – Robert, Judith and Cherill – had
been adopted out. The records
were sealed and Theodore
was not given the names of
the families who had adopted
the children or their locations. Dolphin was still at the
orphanage and was returned
to his father, but 10-year-old
Jesse had set out on his own.
The oldest of the five siblings, Jesse remembers his
sister Judith Kay was a “babe
in arms” when the children
went to the orphans home.
Jesse didn’t want to go to
the orphans home.
“People were talking to
me about it, and I took off,”
Jesse said. “I said I was going
to my grandfather’s place in
Poplar Bluff, Mo., but I went
to my uncle’s 80-acre farm in
Soldier, Iowa.”
Soldier is located in the
Loess Hills region of western Iowa. Jesse told his
relatives that if anyone came
there looking for him, “tell
them you haven’t seen me.
They’re trying to put me in
an orphans home and I’m not
going.”
Jesse completed his eighth
grade education in Soldier. A

no way to trace them.

Judy traveled the world
with her job in the USDA
Natural Resources Conservation Service. The couple lived
in Fairfield for 17 years. They
retired to Arizona in 2001.
A year ago, Judy’s daughter

California sent her a “23 and
Me” DNA kit for her birthday and encouraged her to
research her genealogy.
“Her adoption was fascinating to me, and I had a nagging need to find out where

there were any health issues in her family history of
which her children should be
aware. As she searched, she
began to grow more and more
interested in the mystery that
was her first family.
“The DNA alone wouldn’t
tell me the whole story,”
Judy said. “I contacted the
Iowa Department of Vital
Records with no luck. I wrote
the judge in my home county
asking for my records to be
released and ... received his
letter saying the records are
sealed and therefore there is
nothing he can do.”
Judy reviewed hundreds of
“23 and Me” DNA matches.
In September, Melissa Brimeyer, a volunteer adoption
service specialist from Davenport, suggested she call the
Keokuk Public Library and
ask to speak to whomever
knows the most about genealogy. She spoke with Tonya
Boltz, KPL’s reference librarian and Lee County genealogy
genie.
Boltz pulled local newspapers from around the time of
Judy’s birth. Births of two
girls and one boy were listed
– and one of the girls was
born at St. Joseph’s Hospital
to a Mr. and Mrs. Theodore
Rye.
When the Rye name surfaced, Judy researched the
1940 census. This showed the
Ryes had only four children,
but Boltz’s research found
the census had been recorded
in April 1940, seven months
before Judy was born.
Boltz forwarded her Theodore’s 1966 obituary. Two
surviving sons were listed.
Since Judy knew there were
four boys in the family, she
realized at least two other
brothers had entered the
orphans home with her.

It’s not your typical war story
I can’t recall ever reading
a book of short stories where
the first-person narrator is
a different person in each
story. Yep, Phil Klay did it.
Typically, you’ll see the same
person resurfacing throughout a collection, and you look
for it, or at least I do. It takes
an unbelievable amount of
talent to switch perspective
13 different times, but in
“Redeployment,” Phil Klay
does just that. For his talent
and gut-gripping tales, he
received the National Book
Award. It’s his first book.
Not your typical blood-andguts Iraq/Afghanistan war
stories, this book has some
real literary meat to it. The
stories carry the book, the
occasional drop-your-socks
prose is a side benefit.
In the first story, “Redeployment,” for which the
book is named, the narrator
is a Marine enlisted man
returning home after his
first tour of duty. “We took
my combat pay and did a lot
of shopping. Which is how
America fights back against
the terrorists.”
In “FRAEMPTY NEST GO,” the
narrator
is an active duty
sergeant in
Iraq. By the
way, “FRAGO” stands
for “Fragmentary Order,” which
Klay doesn’t

define, nor
does he define any of the
many military acronyms he
uses. I had to Google them.
But telling a story in undefined acronyms sort of lends
itself to the whole feeling of
the book in a military/war
sort of way.
In “After Action Report,”
the narrator is Lance Corporal Suba. Suba is asked
to take credit for a “kill”
when the soldier who did
the shooting can’t own up to
it, because the “hajji” was a
teenager. Suba talks to the
chaplain (“Chaps”), who
becomes the narrator in a
later story.
In “Bodies,” the narrator
is a Mortuary Affair Marine,
i.e. a soldier who cleans up
bodies after they’re dead.
In “Money as a Weapons
System,” the narrator is a
Foreign Service Officer. “In
Vietnam they had Whores,”
the narrator is a sniper,
viewing eyes from a thousand meters. In “Psychological Operations,” the narrator
is Coptic and an Iraq veteran
attending NYU. “There’s a
perversity in me, that when I
talk to conservatives, makes
me want to bash the war
and, when I talk to liberals,
defend it.”
In “Unless it’s a Sucking
Chest Wound,” the narrator
is a Marine officer veteran in
law school. “...a tick would

try to feed off any liquid at
the temperature of mammalian blood,” and “You don’t
want to be the guy bailing
water out of a sinking ship,”
and “I don’t have PTSD, but I

healthy.”
Through characterization,
language, and point-of-view,
Phil Klay has written a poignant, gut wrenching set of
stories that tell it like it is. I
hope he has more stories in
him in the future.

had died in a 2010 car accident in Des Moines.
Boltz located a Jesse Rye, who was thought to
be living in Missouri. Strangely enough, Boltz had
grown up in the area and had known Jesse all her
life, but always heard him referred to as “Corky.”
A DNA cousin, Suzanne Alexander, decided to
take the plunge and called Jesse. When asked if he
had a sister, he immediately replied, “Judith Kay.”
“I did not know his story, until now. It gives me
goosebumps,” Boltz said. “This is one of the reasons why I love my job so very much. They are a
wonderful group of people.”
Jesse answered his phone one day and heard a
voice say, “This is your long-lost sister.”
“We both sat there for an hour and cried on the
phone,” Jesse said.
“Jesse asked me to do two things for him,” Judy
said. “Find the rest of the boys, and put together a
family reunion.”
A DNA test confirmed their brother-sister relationship, and the search continued.
Judy discovered the location of her brother
Robert Overturf in Malcom near Grinnell. He “has
a big wonderful family,” Shomes said. “Mom and
Robert tell their stories over the phone and promise
to meet soon.”
Bob remembers “bits and pieces” of when he was
adopted by Lester “Mike” and Nettie Overturf at
the age of 2 and went to live with them in Clutier.
As it turned out, Bob had done some wondering

Brimeyer confirmed that their brother, Cherill
Rye (or C. Donald Martin), had died in 1996 in
Michigan from Lou Gehrig’s disease.

living in different places, though Jesse and Dolphin
would later join their father in Keokuk.
about his first family, too. He had known he had
two brothers, but did not know about the other two
siblings. In 2007, he and his wife Linda traveled to
Des Moines to request records. Information was
given to him, but passages that contained “sealed”
information had been blacked out. The couple
wasn’t able to find any solid leads, and they put
aside the project.
DNA testing confirmed Robert is Judy’s and
Jesse’s brother.
Nov. 13 was a day to remember for Bob, Judy
and Jesse and their families when they met at The
Hawkeye Restaurant in Keokuk. There were plenty
of tears and some laughter, too.
“(Judy) has worked very hard on getting all this
to come together,” Bob said. “We had a very nice
visit.”
“It was an unbelievable few minutes in my life,”
Judy said.
Jesse and Bob discovered that they both have
backgrounds in truck driving and farming.
Bob and Judy discovered that they both like blue
cheese dressing.
The family’s Norwegian heritage is recognizable
in each other’s face, Jesse said.
The siblings plan to stay in touch via letter,
email, phone and visits.
Meanwhile, the search continues for Cherill’s two
surviving children – a son and a daughter.
“We just have to hang in there and just keep hoping,” Jesse said.

the MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB lottery game
in its current format will end
Dec. 26 across the country,
lottery ofﬁcials said today.
“Like all good businesses,
lotteries have to try new
ideas,” said Iowa Lottery CEO
Terry Rich. “We incorporated
concepts into this game that
have been popular elsewhere,
but they just didn’t do as well
here. We will continue to
discuss the possible future of
this game and certainly believe in the concept of spreading the winnings around to
players.”
Originally conceived as a
multi-tiered drawing-style
game, MONOPOLY MIL-
LIONAIRES’ CLUB debuted
Oct. 19 with Iowa and 22 other
lotteries offering the game.
But sales came in below
industry projections, leading
the Texas Lottery Commission to suspend sales of the
game in that state following
the Dec. 12 drawing. Lotteries participating in the
game then made the decision
Monday to end all sales in
its current format later this
month.

Duck Stamp Contest
is underway
Calling all student artists and
nature enthusiasts! The U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service is now accepting entries for the 2015 Iowa Federal
Junior Duck Stamp (JDS) art contest.
In entering the JDS contest, students
learn about waterfowl and their
habitat, and then create an image of
an eligible North American waterfowl
species. This contest can be entered
by school groups, informal groups, or
the student may enter individually.
Iowa entries for 2015 must be postmarked by March 15, and mailed to
Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge,
P.O. Box 399, 9981 Paciﬁc Street,
Prairie City, IA 50228. All information
needed to participate can be found on
the website: www.fws.gov/juniorduck.
There are also free, printable student
and teacher curriculum, including
curriculum designed for home school
and non-formal groups, available on
the website.
The 2014 Iowa Junior Duck Stamp
winner was Lynn Singer, a 15-year-
old from the South Union School
District. Her entry was a king eider
done in pastels and is now travelling
around the United States with all the
Best of Show winners.
The entries are judged by a panel
of ﬁve judges with 100 Iowa students
receiving awards. The Best of Show
from the state of Iowa is submitted to
the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest in Washington, D.C. One
image from the Best of Show entries
from each state will become the next
Junior Duck Stamp, with cash prizes
for the national ﬁrst, second and
third place winner. The Junior Duck
Stamps are sold for $5.00 with the proceeds from the sale of the stamp being
returned to the program for environmental and conservation education.
