From Our Rabbi
THOUGHTS AT YEAR’S END
By Rabbi Robert S. Pilavin
ome of you ask what we study Wednesday mornings
at Levy’s.
Scott Levy recently sold his restaurant to
Avigdor Abramov. I would like to thank Scott publicly
for 11 years of gracious hospitality to our class.
The new restaurant is
called Capri Kosher Italian
Cuisine. It remains at the same
address and phone number. Visit
http://www.caprikosher.com/.
And we continue to meet
there every Wednesday at 10 AM
and finish just before noon – often
to enjoy a delicious lunch. At
times, pizza pies are ordered for
the group by a member of the class
marking a happy milestone.
What do we study?
Usually we explore an interesting
theme in that week’s Torah
reading.
Of late, we have
gravitated towards late-breaking
news items that are illuminated by
the Torah portion. For example: A prominent DC rabbi
was arrested on Sukkot on charges of voyeurism (he
allegedly spied on women in the mikveh next to his
shul). At our next class, we studied Genesis 9:18-29, in
which Ham “views the nakedness” of his father Noah
shortly after the family emerged from the Ark.
We debated “The Death of Klinghoffer,” an
American opera based on the 1985 hijacking of
passenger liner Achille Lauro by the Palestine
S
Liberation Front and the hijackers’ murder of an elderly
wheelchair-bound Jew named Leon Klinghoffer. Was
the opera fair to the facts or did it create a false moral
equivalency between Jewish and Palestinian claims
(thus “justifying” Klinghoffer’s murder)? Do “artists”
have unlimited license – or is Art at
times a form of “blasphemy” which
Jews are required to protest?
The birth of my second grandson
Shai Calev inspired our next session
on “bris controversies” – the critics of
the practice of circumcision in general
and of one form of it (metzizah b’peh)
in particular.
Brittany Maynard was a 29-yearold terminally ill cancer patient who
attracted national attention with her
decision to end her life on November
1. Do we have a “right” to die? If so,
may others assist us? We explored the
Jewish sources on euthanasia and
physician-assisted suicide.
Future topics may include: the
Conversion Crisis in Israel and the Diaspora, the first
anniversary of the (in)famous Pew Study of American
Jews, Jon Stewart’s problem with his Jewish “brethren”
and much more.
Why not join us? Even the not-yet-retired who
work locally are often able to expand their “lunch hour”
once a week so that they can participate. In the spirit of
Chanukah, let’s (re)dedicate ourselves to Torah study!
Thank you to all those
who gave of their time
and helped paint the
custodian’s house.

ADULT EDUCATION NOTES
Wednesday morning classes at Levy’s (now called Capri) will continue throughout December. Participants will
determine at a later date whether class will be held on December 24 and 31.
A brief Torah lesson (5-10 minutes) takes place at the end of the weekday evening minyan, which begins at
8:30PM.
We just finished a Beginner’s Class in Hebrew Reading on Monday nights. We envision a “follow-up” class
soon that will allow us to practice the prayers and songs of Chanukah, which begins December 16.
RITUAL ODDS AND ENDS
On Thursday night December 5 we begin adding the prayer for rain (v’ten tal umatar).
Chanukah begins Tuesday night December 16. The blessings are:
1) Barukh Atah...Melekh Ha-olam Asher Kidshanu B’Mitzvotav VeTzivanu Le-hadlik Ner Shel
Chanukah
2) Barukh Atah...Melekh Ha-olam She-Asah Nissim La-avoteinu, Ba-yamim Ha-heim Baz’man Hazeh
3) Barukh Atah...Melekh Ha-olam She-hecheyanu Vekiy’manu Ve-Higi’anu Laz’man Ha-Zeh (First
Night Only)
January 1 is Asarah B’Tevet – a fast day.
OUR NEW PRAYER BOOKS
Many of you are aware that we have had new siddurim for the past two months. The new Koren-Sacks
siddur has many wonderful features, among them:
Rabbi Sacks’ 33-page introduction (“Understanding Jewish Prayer”) is as inspiring as it is informative.
The English translation is clearer and easier to compare with the Hebrew original. The layout of each page is
more pleasing to the eye.
Unlike other siddurim, Koren-Sacks includes the insights of many scholars: right-wing (haredi)
Orthodox, modern Orthodox and non-Orthodox.
The State of Israel is virtually non-existent in many siddurim. Koren-Sacks includes prayers for Israel
Independence Day, Israel Memorial Day and Jerusalem Day, and instructions for what prayers are said in Israel.
Koren-Sacks is inclusive of women. There are prayers for the birth of a daughter and prayers recited by women
returning to shul after giving birth. The siddur notes that women dining in groups of three or more should say
the “zimmun” invitation to Grace After Meals (a.k.a. “Rabbotai Nevarech”).
Rabbi Sacks points out that the ultimate purpose of praying is that we leave the synagogue “seeing
ourselves and the universe differently, freshly conscious that the world is God’s work, the Torah God’s word, our
fellow believers God’s children, and our fellow human beings God’s image.”
Rabbi Sacks would surely encourage us to support the shul daily minyan (8:30 PM Sunday-Thursday)
and morning minyan (8:30 AM Sunday, 7:15 AM Monday-Friday). Pick one night a week and come regularly.
Or come every evening in the week when you observe yahrzeit.
We thank our Siddur sponsors: the Ellis family (in loving memory of Behira Ellis), the Men’s Club and
the Sisterhood.

Koren Siddurim for Shabbat and Holidays
We are pleased to announce new donations by our Sisterhood and 0HQ·V&OXE to purchase
200 additional Koren siddurim, completing our collection. This means that those in
attendance at Shabbat services will benefit from these extraordinary prayer books.
We thank these important divisions of our congregation for their generosity,
dedication and attentiveness to the religious life and enrichment of our synagogue.
Please consider dedicating one of these new siddurim in honor of a friend or family
member, to mark any special occasion or milestone.

sisterhood news
By Barbara Zagha and Bonnie Leff
day to celebrate one of our own: November 16th
we came together to honor Michelle Fields at our
annual Woman of Valor breakfast. It was a wonderful
morning to pay tribute to Michelle’s volunteerism and
to learn more about the projects she has worked on, her
professional life, and of course her family. In
dedicating that morning to Michelle we set a high bar
for our Sisterhood members. We hope to honor one of
our own each year at this special event. Committee
work is the key to every organization, and we want to
especially recognize Nancy Bolotsky, Vickie Amron
and their committee of “wonder women” that made the
Woman of Valor event a beautiful memory for our
congregation.
Our mission as a Sisterhood is to promote the
welfare of the Jewish community, at home and globally
through social, financial and benevolent activities. One
amazing result of our hard work the last two years is
how our web of volunteers has grown. Now when we
come to an event, or see it coming together in the
background or review a list of helpers, we find new
names joining in to make the program a success. If you
are one of those members, we embrace your efforts and
thank you for joining our ranks of providing our
congregation with diverse and interesting
A
programming.
Book Chat with Jane Goldstein is always a
lovely evening where we share a bit of our lives. The
novel is our springboard, and therein begins the
discussion of themes and character we have shared. In
November we discussed “The Invention of Wings” by
Sue Monk Kidd and learned that the book was actually
based on real people in history. On February 9th
consider joining us at 7:15 p.m. for our upcoming
choice, “The Interestings”, by Meg Wolitzer.
Get your dancing feet ready for a return of
Speed Limit. A night of Rock ’n Roll will take place on
Saturday evening December 13th in the Mishan Hall;
entry is $18 per person. Anyone who was there last
year will surely be on hand to repeat a fun night with
friends and community.
And….one final note. On November 8th on
Shabbos morning we were privileged to give Pauline
Froster an honor. For the very first time, a woman
made Kiddush for the congregation before we forayed
into the social hall. Pauline was celebrating her
birthday with her family and they sponsored lunch in
her honor. It was a very special moment in
Congregation Sons of Israel history, and we hope it
will be repeated many times to come.
