UPFFC Celebrates With
Farm & Food Fest 2014
Christmas Open House
The Upper PeeDee Farm and Food Council
celebrated its most ambitious event to date on
Saturday, November 8. Over 100 people attended the UPFFC Farm & Food Fest 2014 at
Stanly County’s Lucky Clays Farm outside Norwood. Speakers came from around the state to
provide their expertise at various workshops.
Joel Olsen of o2 Energies and Jeff Redwine of
The RED Group talked about the latest in alternative energy for both farm and home, including
information from the USDA Renewable Energy
for America (REAP) program.
Smithson Mills, Asheville businessman,
Rebecca Dunning, NCSU’s “NC Growing Together,” and Debbie Hamrick, NC Farm Bureau, presented the latest trends on how connecting producers
and consumers of healthy local food can build our farm and food system.
Bradley Todd, Lucky Clays Greenhouse Manager and his staff, took attendees on extended tours of the Greenhouse
where they learned how Lucky Clays is producing tilapia, lettuces, herbs and edible flowers for the Charlotte market.
The highlight for many was the food fest, made with a variety of food products provided by farmers in the region. ROOTS
Catering, serving the Charlotte area, prepared a long menu of delicious items, a feast for both the eyes and the stomach.
Following the food fest, Chris Stinson, Council Leadership Team member, recognized Interim Co-director, Shannon
Johnson, who recounted some highlights of the UPFFC year. Shawn Hatley, Interim Co-director, presented Gary
Sikes, Bountiful Harvest Farm, Polkton, with the first Volunteer of the Year award in recognition for his service since
the genesis of UPFFC. The award was a sculpture crafted from old tools on Shawn’s grandfather’s farm in Oakboro
and designed and made by Bradley Todd at the Lucky Clays’ welding shop.
Roger Dick, CEO, Uwharrie Bank, a major sponsor, spoke briefly about how important the local food system is
to our local economies. He was followed by Debbie Hamrick, from NC Farm Bureau, who spoke on the future of
local food, noting that it is “here to stay.”
UPFFC invites the public to become involved with their programs, especially in joining the Friends of UPFF to
support the hiring of a new part-time director. Find more at www.upffc.org or email [email protected].
