What a Spring/Summer period we’ve had! As we move into Autumn/Winter we
prepare to get even busier! We have absolutely packed this brochure full of
wonderful entertainment. Laugh, cry, listen & watch and on the rare nights that
we don’t have something in our theatre, our bar will be open for you to soak
up the atmosphere (and something to wet your whistle!) in our Theatre Foyer.
That’s right: our bar is now open EVERY NIGHT!!! So, drink in the atmosphere
of our Theatre Bar as you drink a glass of wine or a bottle of local ale.
Our charity focus continues and for this brochure we focus our spotlight
on The Taylor High Memorial Fund, a charity doing amazing work locally and
raising funds for good causes. The theatre relies on donations, sponsorship,
funding and, of course, people coming through the doors to enjoy themselves
but we still think it’s important to help raise the profile of other good causes.
Find our spotlight on The Taylor High Memorial Fund further on in the brochure
and book to see the Taylor High Memorial Concert.
With that local feel in mind, we realised we didn’t have to look very far to find
some exceptional productions. We have so much talent around us that we felt
it was important to concentrate on just that and so most of the shows for this
period are brought to us by local companies.
There are so many events I could pick out to recommend but I don’t actually
know where to start! They’re all great and of such diverse choice that everybody
has a reason to seat themselves in our auditorium several times this season.
The Rep is busy this season, too. Catch the final three episodes of Blackadder
Goes Forth between late October and Mid November and make a special date
of our Christmas production. We’re planning an amazing 4D production of The
Snow Queen to tease your senses with all the fun of a family panto.
I can’t wait to see you as you come out of a show with a big grin on your
face, revelling in the feel of the production you’ve just enjoyed. This brochure
will see me mark a year in the helm at The Seagull. I’m not one to drop hints but
it’s the kind of milestone that deserves a party….

Walking The Road
& Sea Lavender
Poet and road worker Francis Ledwidge haunts Irish literature. A determined
Irish Nationalist he fought for Great Britain in WW1 hoping to secure Home Rule.
Walking the Road is one poet’s re-imagining of another poet’s life. Hovering in
half-light memories, it vividly follows Ledwidge on one final journey through the
landscape of WW1. The UK revival of this highly acclaimed play set during the
1689 Siege of Derry. At the heart of Sea Lavender is an unusaul love triangle. A
Yorkshire cobbler awaits execution after trying to gain entry into the besieged city
disguised as a woman... As his story unfolds, the reality of the Siege, and the
consequences of obsessive love swept up in the tide of history come vividly alive.

Ph
he Seagull is an intimate 112 seat theatre in
Lowestoft, Suffolk that plays host to a regular
stream of local talent, regional and national
touring theatre companies & bands offering a diverse
program for all ages and tastes.
The Seagull Theatre was originally The Morton
Road School until the early 1960s when it was
converted to the building that exists today. In 2006
Suffolk County Council withdrew their funding which
caused its temporary closure. As a result of this the
SOS (‘Save our Seagull’) group was formed, the
patrons of which were Oscar-winning Dame Judi
Dench and Laurence Olivier Award winning Desmond
Barrit. Dame Judi pledged her personal support to the
campaigners fighting to save the theatre. The Seagull
was saved and reopened in 2007 and has since
been renovated. We have now established status as
a Community Interest Company and we truly believe
we have an important role to play as a dedicated
community performing arts centre. We are continually
working on community projects in addition to working
very closely with local schools. We currently receive
no continuous outside funding. We have 3 large
studios, office space and a theatre with licensed bar
to rent for private functions and we are continually
working on improving the building as finances allow.
The theatre has its own in-house production
company, The Seagull Rep, and is also home to many
local companies as well as two theatre schools.
The Seagull’s continuing survival is dependent
upon its volunteers. We are always looking for new
volunteers, so if you’d like to help us either doing
something technical, administrative or just want to
help make teas, we can always use new people. To
find out more, email us at [email protected], call
us on (01502) 589726 or like us on Facebook. If you
have an email address please join our marketing list
to receive up to date information and special offers. If
you have already visited the Seagull and enjoyed your
experience, we hope you will return and please tell all
your friends and family. If you have not, please come
and give us a look and see one of the vast variety of
shows and events we have on offer. Also, we always
welcome new ideas. The Seagull is a community
theatre and we need the community to be involved so
we can provide events, facilities and services that you,
the audience, would like to see.
