The Coach: The 2014-15 season is Austin Parkinson’s fifth season as head coach of the IUPUI women’s basketball team. He has led the Jags to back-to-back 20-win seasons, including a school-record 23 in 201314, and consecutive WNIT appearances. Parkinson played collegiately at Purdue under legendary coach Gene Keady and ranks as Purdue’s career leader in assist-to-turnover ratio and is 10th in Boilermaker history in career assists. STORYLINES, STREAKS, HIGHLIGHTS • • COACHING STAFF The Game: For the first time since 2007-08, two instate foes will face off when IUPUI hosts Evansville at The Jungle for a 2 p.m. tip. • • IUPUI and Evansville will meet for the 12th time on Sunday. Five of IUPUI’s seven games in December will be against teams from Indiana. Four of those seven games will be at The Jungle. The Jaguars are averaging 13.5 offensive rebounds per game, which results into 15.2 second-chance points per game. A win would improve IUPUI’s record to 5-7 on the season, and it would even the all-time series between IUPUI and Evansville at 6-6 A loss would drop IUPUI to 4-8 overall. vs. EVANSVILLE 4-7; 0-0 SUMMIT For the first time since 2007-08, IUPUI will take on in-state foe Evansville on Sunday, Dec. 21, in its final home game prior to Summit League play. GAMEDAY INFORMATION • Sunday’s tip is set for 2 p.m. ET, and Morgan Adcock will have the call on IUPUIJags.com beginning just before tip. • The game will be streamed for free. • Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for youth ages 12 and under. • ABOUT EVANSVILLE • The Purple Aces have won four straight to inch above .500 on the season at 5-4. • Evansville has a balanced scoring attack, including three double-figure scorers, and it led by Sara Dickey’s 19.9 ppg. • Mallory Ladd also joins Dickey in double figures at 17.7 ppg, and she also leads the team in rebounding and assists. • One of Evansville’s strengths this season has been its ability to limit its turnovers. Through nine games, UE has a positive assist-toturnover ratio dishing out 143 assists compared to 139 turnovers. • The Purple Aces have also been able to get to the line at a consistent rate and have outscored their opponents, 116-84, at the charity stripe. LAST TIME OUT ... • IUPUI shot a season-high 59 percent from the floor and held visiting IU Southeast to just 27.5 percent as the Jaguars stormed to a 95-45 win over the Grenadiers in The Jungle on Thursday night (Dec. 18). • Senior Nevena Markovic led five Jaguars in double-digits with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Mikale Rogers contributed a doubledouble off the bench to lead the Jaguars to victory. • Kelsi Byrd (13), Nicole Rogers (12) and Akilah Sims (10) also finished in double-digits for the Jaguars, who improved to 4-2 at home this season. • Mary Dye and Megan Cureton led IU Southeast (8-5) with 11 points apiece. • IUPUI (4-7) held the Grenadiers without a field goal for more than 11 minutes to start the game, building a 28-4 lead before Riley Kaiser rainbowed in a three from the left wing. While IUS plodded along offensively, IUPUI scored at will, including making its first five attempts of the game to jump ahead 11-2 in the opening three minutes, aided largely by three quick steals. • The Jaguars never trailed with the lead growing to 48-17 at the break on a Markovic layup at the final horn. The Jaguars connected on 68 percent from the field in the first half while limiting IUS to just 4-of-24 (16.7 percent) in the opening 20 minutes. Head Coach Austin Parkinson’s squad took full advantage of its size differential, outscoring the guests 36-4 in the paint in the first half and 58-20 for the game. IUPUI closed with a 48-22 rebounding advantage, including grabbing 17 offensive caroms that led to 23 second chance points. The Jaguars unselfishly dished out 27 assists on 43 field goals with 11 different players contributing at least one dime. Freshman Danielle Lawrence handed out a game-high six assists and both Kelsi Byrd and Martha Burse added four each. The only blip on the radar was a slow start to the second half, prompting Parkinson to call timeout less than three minutes into the stanza. His squad responded with a 10-0 run, capped by a Nicole Rogers trey off a Lawrence assist, pushing the lead out to 62-24 with 14:30 left. Even as Parkinson went deeper to the bench, contributions kept coming as the lead swelled to 47 on a Shanika Maddox layup near the midpoint of the second half. The Jaguars ended the game with the final six points on Caitlyn Tolen and Rogers threes as the final 50-point margin was the largest advantage of the night. Rogers made 4-of-10 threes off the bench for her 12 points while Mikale Rogers went for 10 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive) in just 11 minutes of action. The bench finished with 45 of the Jaguars’ 95 points as Lawrence scored eight and Maddox and Jenna Gunn tallied six each. TRIPLE THREAT • Through a third of the season, the Jags have been one of the top-ranked 3-point shooting teams in the Summit League, and one of the better in the nation. • The Jaguars are hitting 38.4 percent of their three’s this season, which ranks 23rd in the nation. • IUPUI has buried six or more three’s in six of the team’s 11 games, but its Top-2 threepoint shooters are both shooting above 40.0 percent on the season. • Nicole Rogers leads the way with a team-high 23 while shooting 47.9 percent from three, and Kelsi Byrd is next with 18 made three’s at a 45.0 percent clip. • Rogers is second in the league in 3-point field goal percentage, and her 2.1 3-point field goals made per game rank third in the league. • Byrd is fifth in the league shooting 45.0 percent from three, and her 1.8 three’s per game are tied for sixth. RECORD NIGHT • In IUPUI’s 102-44 victory over IU-Kokomo on Dec. 11, Nicole Rogers set a new school record for three-pointers made in a game en route to USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll (Dec. 16, 2014) Rank Team (Record) Points 1.............. The Kokomo, Ind.-native went 11-of-16 from three, besting the previous school record by one set by Muffy Murphy back on March 9, 1991, against Wingate. Rogers previous high was six against Chicago State during her freshman campaign, and no other IUPUI player had managed to hit more than eight in a game. She went 5-of-7 in the first half from deep, before knocking in 6-of-9 in the second half, resulting in 33 of her 34 points coming from behind-the-arc. Thanks in part to her 11 three’s, the Jags tied the school record for three’s made in a game with 15. The 34 points are the most points scored in a game in IUPUI’s D-I era, and the most since Muffy Murphy put in a school-record 44 points against St. Francis (Ill.) on Feb. 8, 1992. CLICKING ON ALL CYLINDERS • Coming off four straight losses, the Jaguars put together an impressive all-around performance in a 102-44 win over IU-Kokomo on Dec. 11. • In addition to Nicole Rogers’ career-high 34 points, Danielle Lawrence also set a careerhigh scoring 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Lawrence also distributed a season-best six assists. • However, Caitlyn Tolen led all players in assists with a career-high nine, with eight of those coming in the first half. • Finally, Shawnece Teague was a force on the defensive end of the floor. She scored six points, but six of her eight rebounds came on the defensive end of the floor and she posted a career-high seven blocks. • The seven blocks are the most blocks in a game since Julia Whitted had six against Oral Roberts on Feb. 14, 2009. SOPHOMORE SURGE • As true freshmen, both Kelsi Byrd and Mikale Rogers played in all 33 games but they averaged 14.5 and 12.0 minutes per game, respectively. • Rogers averaged 6.0 ppg, while Byrd averaged 2.6 ppg. • However, this season the duo has received more minutes and that has resulted in more scoring production for the Jags. • In 11 games, both Rogers and Byrd are averaging 7.7 ppg. • Byrd leads the team in minutes played per game with 25.4, and she is just one of three players that have a positive assist-to-turnover ration (27:17). • Over the last six games, Byrd is averaging 9.2 ppg while shooting 44.4 percent from the field (20-of-45), including 42.9 shooting from three (12-of-28). • During that same stretch, Rogers is averaging 10.0 ppg on 51.1 percent shooting (23-of-45). 4-7; 0-0 SUMMIT OFFENSIVE GLASS • Coming into the season, one of the strengths for the Jaguars was their frontcourt depth and that has helped them perform well on the glass through the first third of the season. • IUPUI has been outrebounded only twice this season, and collectively is outrebounding its opponents 38.4 to 32.3. • Part of that is due to its ability to consistently grab offensive rebounds. • The Jags have grabbed double-digit offensive rebounds in all 10 games this season, which includes a season-high 18 offensive rebounds at Indiana on Dec. 11. • In total, they have secured offensive rebounds on 43.8 percent of their missed shots this season. • Jenna Gunn is the team leader in offensive rebounds grabbing 30, and she is followed by Mikale Rogers and Shanika Maddox, who both have 21. • The team’s 148 offensive rebounds this season have turned into 167 second-chance points, averaging out to 15.2 points per game. DEBUT SPLASH • Against No. 11 Louisville on Nov. 14, four players made their IUPUI debuts, including three true freshmen. • Junior transfer Shaquira Scott and freshman Danielle Lawrence both earned their first career starts, while Martha Burse and Jenna Gunn saw their first action in a reserve role. • Scott led IUPUI with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 shooting from the free throw line. She scored 13 of her team-high 16 points in the second half. • Burse also reached double figures in her first game scoring 10 points, including eight in the second half. • Off the bench, Gunn scored six points and grabbed two rebounds in her first appearance as a Jag, while Lawrence tallied a pair of assists. • While it wasn’t her debut, Shawnece Teague made her first appearance in a game since March of 2013 and played three minutes. JAGS PICKED THIRD IN SUMMIT LEAGUE • The IUPUI women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Summit League Preseason Poll in a vote of the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and select media members. • South Dakota State was tabbed to win the league after winning its third consecutive regular-season title last season and accumulating 513 points, including 27 of the 32 first-place votes. The 2014 Summit League Tournament champion, South Dakota, was picked second with 420 points and earned four first-place votes. The Jags rounded out the top three with 408 points. • Western Illinois finished fourth and picked up the last first-place vote, and it was followed in order by Denver, Fort Wayne, Oral Roberts, IUPUI’S Record When... 2014-15 Under Parkinson Home ..........................................4-2......................... 42-21 Road ........................................... 0-3......................... 17-43 Neutral........................................ 0-2............................ 5-8 Lead at Halftime......................... 4-0......................... 54-11 Trail at Halftime ......................... 0-6.......................... 8-55 Tied at Halftime ..........................0-1............................ 2-6 Leading w/ 5:00 left .................. 4-0.......................... 59-7 Trailing w/ 5:00 left .................... 0-6.......................... 5-63 Tied w/ 5:00 left ..........................0-1............................. 1-2 Shooting 50% or better .............. 3-1...........................22-2 Shooting between 40-50% ......... 1-2......................... 32-17 Shooting less than 40% ............. 0-4..........................11-53 Commit less TO than opp.......... 2-0........................44-30 Commit more TO than opp. .......2-7.........................16-38 Commit same TO as opp/ .......... 0-0............................ 4-4 Outrebound opponent ............. 4-4......................... 51-22 Outrebounded by opponent .... 0-2........................ 10-46 Rebounding is equal ..................0-1............................ 3-4 Bench outscores opp. ............... 4-5........................ 50-37 Bench is outscored by opp. .......0-1......................... 13-33 Bench scoring is equal ...............0-1............................. 1-2 Hit more FT than opponent .......2-3.........................34-13 Hit less FT than opponent ..........2-4........................ 27-58 Hit same FT as opponent .......... 0-0............................. 3-1 Hit more 3FG than opponent .....3-3.........................37-23 Hit less 3FG than opponent ....... 1-4.........................19-43 Hit same 3FG as opponent ........ 0-0............................ 9-4 Hit at least 6 three-pointers .......3-3..........................27-11 Hit less than 6 three-pointers .... 1-4.........................38-61 Games decided by 5 pts. or fewer... 0-1.......................... 11-14 Games decided by 6-10 points .. 0-3..........................13-17 Games decided by 10+ points ... 4-3........................ 40-41 In home whites/golds ............... 4-3........................ 45-26 In road blacks/reds .................... 0-4........................ 19-46 5+ players in double-digits ........ 0-0 ...........................0-0 5 players in double-digits ...........1-0 ........................... 3-0 4 players in double-digits ............1-1...........................14-3 3 players in double-digits ...........2-2.........................30-16 2 players in double-digits .......... 0-2......................... 13-24 1 player in double-digits ............ 0-0...........................3-25 no players in double-digits ........ 0-2.............................1-4 Versus Ranked Opponents ....... 0-2............................0-6 Versus Non-ranked Opp. ........... 4-5........................64-66 Vs. RETURNING FOR MORE • IUPUI lost four seniors from its 23-win team from a year ago, but the Jaguars welcome back seven members from last year’s squad. • Included in those returners is 2013-14 Second-Team All-Conference performer and 2014-15 Preseason First-Team All-League selection Nevena Markovic. • Markovic is the Jaguars leading returning scorer, rebounder and distributor averaging 11.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg and 1.6 apg in 2013-14. • Markovic is just a piece of IUPUI’s talented returning frontcourt that also consists of senior Shanika Maddox, junior Akilah Sims and sophomore Mikale Rogers. The trio of Maddox, Sims and Rogers collectively averaged 21.0 ppg and 13.0 rpg last year. Also joining the fold in the frontcourt is sophomore Shawnece Teague, who redshirted last season due to injury. • The backcourt welcomes back three players in Nicole Rogers, Kelsi Byrd and Caitlyn Tolen, with Rogers serving as the team’s three-point specialist during her first two seasons on campus. Last season, Rogers buried 71 three’s and is sure to remain a threat behind-the-arc in 2014-15. NEW FACES • Head coach Austin Parkinson welcomes six new faces to the roster this season including five true freshmen. • The five true freshmen are Danielle Lawrence, Martha Burse, Jenna Gunn, Khadidiatou Diouf and Sara Ross. Gunn was a four-year starter for Mason High School where she averaged 15.1 ppg and 6.3 rpg as a senior after averaging 12.9 ppg and 5.9 rpg as a junior. The 6-1 forward was a 2013-14 AP Divison-I All-Ohio ThirdTeam selection and during her career she was a three-time all-conference performer, including a two-time first-team selection, a District 15 Underclassmen selection and an Associated Press Division-I special-mention all-district selection as a junior. JAGS INK THREE TO NLI’S • Head coach Austin Parkinson announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, Nov. 12. • Allex Brown (Perrysburg, Ohio/ Perrysburg), Sydney Hall (Fortville, Ind./ Heritage Christian) and Jan’nae Williams (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) all faxed in their NLI’s on Wednesday to join the Jaguars family beginning with the 201516 campaign. • “We are thrilled to welcome these special young ladies into our Jaguar family,” Parkinson said. “I love this class because in the classroom they are all excellent students and on the court they might be the toughest competitors collectively we’ve brought to IUPUI. 0-0 SUMMIT AUSTIN PARKINSON Head Coach // 5th Season In just four seasons as the head coach of the IUPUI women’s basketball program, Austin Parkinson has taken the Jags from a three-win team a year prior to his arrival into a team that has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons, two consecutive postseason appearances, and the program’s first postseason victory in 2013-14. Since his arrival during the 2010-11 season, Parkinson has directed IUPUI to more wins in each of his first four seasons than the previous season. After securing nine more wins during the 2011-12 season than the previous year, Parkinson led the Jaguars to 20 wins during the 2012-13 campaign, before directing a 23-win campaign in 2013-14 - the single-season Division-I program record for wins in a season. A year after being named Summit League Coach of the Year, Parkinson’s 2013-14 IUPUI team piled up win after win en route to a 23-10 record and an at-large berth in the WNIT. The Jags embarked on a nine-game winning streak spanning from Jan. 11 to Feb. 13 and finished the regular-season as the runner-up for the second season in a row. After being selected to the WNIT, the Jags went on the road to pick up a win over Central Michigan, 72-66, giving the program its first Division-I postseason victory. The group was led by a pair of all-conference performers in DeAirra Goss and Nevena Markovic, who were first and second-team All-Summit League selections, respectively. Under Parkinson’s guidance, Goss blossomed into a 17.4 ppg scorer in Summit League-only action during her senior season, while Markovic became a force down the stretch posting five of her team-high seven double-doubles during the past seven games. The success in 2013-14 was built in 2012-13 when Parkinson guided IUPUI to its first 20win campaign since joining the Division-I ranks during the 1998-99 season. Included in the 20 wins, were 12 Summit League victories - the most conference wins since joining the league. For his efforts, Parkinson was named Summit League Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, while Kerah Nelson was named a first-team all-conference performer, Goss was named a second-team all-league performer, and junior Dee-Dee Bellamy was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Year. The 20-win campaign for the Jaguars also resulted in IUPUI making its first postseason appearance in its D-I era, when it was selected to participate in the 2013 WNIT. Part of the reason for Parkinson’s success in turning the program around has been his emphasis on recruiting the state of Indiana. In his four recruiting classes, eight signees have come from the Hoosier State. “The focus of our program will be on developing the girls into the best basketball players they can be, but more importantly, to develop them into young women that are prepared for success in life after basketball,” Parkinson said. Asst., Purdue “Priority number one in recruiting is to build the relationships with players and coaches across the state of Indiana,” Parkinson added. “There’s an abundance of talent throughout the Midwest and I look forward to the opportunity to recruit some of those individuals to IUPUI.” In his short tenure as the leader of the IUPUI women’s basketball program, he helped Nelson become a two-time, first-team all-conference performer following two honorable-mention all-conference campaigns. As a junior Nelson ranked fifth in the Summit League in scoring averaging 16.2 ppg as a junior and totaled 518 points, ranking sixth on IUPUI’s single-season scoring chart and becoming the Jags single-season scoring leader in the Division I era. Nelson finished her career with 1,614 points, making her IUPUI’s Division-I all-time scoring leader. A point guard during his playing days at Purdue under legendary head coach Gene Keady, Parkinson valued sharing the basketball and limiting turnovers. Inheriting a team that turned the ball over six more times than their opponents and averaged less than 10 assists per game in 2009-10, Parkinson helped the 2010-11 squad to dramatically improve its turnover margin and assists total and that trend continued the proper direction in 2011-12. Prior to leading the women’s basketball program, Parkinson served as an assistant coach of the IUPUI men’s basketball staff for two seasons and helped both Robert Glenn and Alex Young elevate to First Team All-Summit League honors in 2010. In addition, the Jags’ 25 wins in 2009-10 were one shy of the program’s single-season record in that category. The 31-year old was a four-year letterwinner at Purdue from 2000-04 and closed his career tied for tenth on the Boilermakers’ all-time assist list after leading the squad in that category in both his sophomore and seniors seasons. Additionally, he led the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover ratio in each of his final three seasons. He received both his B.S. (‘04) and Masters (‘06) from Purdue in Organizational Leadership and Supervision. In his prep days, he played at Northwest High School in Kokomo, Ind., and in the Spring of 2014 he was inducted into the inaugural class of the school’s Hall of Fame. Parkinson comes from impressive basketball pedigree as his father, Bruce, is Purdue’s all-time assist leader and a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. His grandfather, Jack, played for the legendary Adolph Rupp at Kentucky and is a member of the Indiana and Kentucky Basketball Halls of Fame. vs. EVANSVILLE 4-7; 0-0 SUMMIT CAREER STATS vs. EVANSVILLE 4-7; 0-0 SUMMIT CAREER STATS vs. EVANSVILLE 4-7; 0-0 SUMMIT 2014-15 IUPUI WOMEN’S BASKETBALL RADIO/TV CHART #3 - Kelsi Byrd 5-9 // So. // G North Montgomery, Ind. #4 - Danielle Lawrence 5-9 // Fr. // G Louisville, Ky. #10 - Nicole Rogers 5-11 // Jr. // G Kokomo, Ind. #11 - Sara Ross 5-10 // Fr. // G Naperville, Ill. #12 - Caitlyn Tolen 5-10 // So. // G Otterbein, Ind. #21 - Shanika Maddox 6-1 // Sr. // F Fishers, Ind. #22 - Martha Burse 5-6 // Fr. // G Kankakee, Ill. #23 - Shawnece Teague 6-3 // Jr. // C Indianapolis, Ind. #24 - Khadidiatou Diouf 6-2 // Fr. // C Dakar, Senegal #25 - Shaquira Scott 5-10 // R-Jr. // G Wilmette, Ill. #30 - Akilah Sims 5-10 // Jr. // F Fort Wayne, Ind. #32 - Jenna Gunn 6-0 // Fr. // F Cincinnati, Ohio NUMERICAL ROSTER 3 ...............................Kelsi Byrd 4 .................Danielle Lawrence 10 ......................Nicole Rogers 11 ..............................
