hanks to our 75th Anniversary
Celebration Committee with P/D/C
Brian Logan SN as chairman, we had
a delightful 75th Anniversary wrap-up
Formal Dinner dance. Thanks to Lt Gilbert
Lorenzo, AP for editing and producing a great “slide” show that
included photographs of the year in review! Thanks also to Gilbert
for snapping portraits of everyone at the event, including our
bevvy of beauties picture of almost every woman in attendance.
Great job Gilbert! (Pictures are available for purchase, see
Gilbert.) We had a great year of celebration for our Squadron’s
75th year, from our kick-off at Turkeyfoot Island Club, through
our 75th Anniversary Cruise, to our Wrap-Up Dinner on November
15th, due to the efforts of many volunteers planning and
preparing for our great pleasure. Thanks to all involved!
I have recently returned from our District 7 Fall Conference and I
could not be more proud of our squadron or my squadron mates!
It seemed like half of the attendees were from Akron. And what a
beautiful first class venue (Stonewall Jackson Resort, West
Virginia) we had. Under the leadership of our Executive Officer Lt/
C Dave Rice, SN and crew, we managed to win the Rocky River
Tankard for our Hospitality Room. Thanks to P/Lt/C Margo
Holmes, AP for a great script for our skit and for the costumes
that she created; our drama team had great fun. We were also
awarded the Arnold Erickson Trophy for teaching elective courses,
and recognized for Co-operative charting.
Conferences offer something for everyone, and some attendees
ventured to nearby Weston, West Virginia to visit the Trans
Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. There were several good seminars
offered including: “Fuel and Boating by D/E/O John Whitely SN,
“Batteries and Chargers” by our Lt Jim Ehrman, P and
“Membership” by our P/D/C Brian Logan, SN and D/Lt Linda
Leque, N. I am extremely proud as a commander that our
members are asked to lead and advise others in our district, and
at a national level. It was a real pleasure to watch Brian Logan
present his Membership Plan and eagerly offer his help and time
to any other squadron. To me, this represents a strong healthy
December 2014
squadron when we can reach out and help others. I was also very
proud when the USPS Chief Commander’s Representative stated
that “Akron Sail and Power Squadron embodies the new motto
“Come for the education, stay for the friends…””. Basically, the
secret to our success!
If you have not been to a District Conference lately, plan to
attend the Spring Conference on 20 - 22 March at the Holiday Inn
Rockside Rd in Independence OH.
One last reminder, bring three dozen cookies, and a donation of
money or un-wrapped toy (for the Children’s Services Board) to our
December general meeting.
Tracie and I wish you a merry and blessed Christmas and
Chanukah season! I like the Hebrew word “shalom” especially at
this season. Shalom means completeness, wholeness, health,
peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity,
perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or
discord, and can only come from Him who created and put all
things into place. See: http://www.therefinersfire.org/

tonewall Resort in West Virginia
provided a great venue for the District 7
Fall Conference. The setting, with views
on all sides was beautiful; the food was
very good; and I heard no complaints about the
service. The drive was long, but Joy and I tagged along with Tom
and Sandy Vielhaber so the time went quickly.
Akron Sail and Power Squadron won the Rocky River Tankard
for the best hospitality room. That was due to the efforts of many
people, particularly P/Lt/C Margo Holmes, AP and P/C Susan
Harris, S for costume design and manufacture, Jinx Pfile for music
and dance instruction, and P/D/C Brian Logan for bringing Mug

Ale as our featured drink of the evening. Thanks also to 1st/Lt
Tom Vielhaber, P who brought his truck just to carry all the stuff
needed to decorate the room. Lt/C Sandy Vielhaber, P and Lt
Liana Mihalca, SN used their artistic talent to paint pictures for
the room including portraits of the Blennerhassetts. Thanks also
to the many people who contributed food and help for both
evenings.
ASPS members Brian Logan and Lt Jim Ehrman, P contributed
their expertise by teaching seminars as well. Lt Gilbert Lorenzo,
AP was everywhere snapping pictures. We all look forward to
viewing these. Mid-Ohio Valley and Kanawha River Power

the force behind a fabulous 75th anniversary series of memorable
events! Every event was a well-attended success and helped
Akron Sail and Power Squadron get recognition both locally and
at USPS headquarters. It is now up to the rest of us to work to
maintain this energy by getting involved in the squadron. In
order to continue this great organization, consider volunteering
or helping if you are asked to chair a committee, assist in running
an event or even consider becoming a member of the bridge.
Sandy said they particularly need volunteers during December to
help assist the “shoppers” at the Children’s services location. If
you know teenagers that need “volunteer hours” for school, here
is a great opportunity!
Over the past seven years, Akron Sail and Power Squadron has
donated cash and gifts of more than $10,000 to Children’s
Services. In addition, many members volunteered their time in
the Toy Room helping parents select toys and gifts to give to
their children. Children’s Services recognized Akron at their
Community Appreciation Meeting last April and presented the
squadron a plaque recognizing our contributions.
Happy Holidays to All!
There’s Still Time to Help Summit County
Children’s Services for Christmas
Christmas is fast approaching and, once again, Akron Sail and
Power Squadron is adopting Summit County Children Services for
our civic holiday program. The Children Services has several
programs to help needy families. We have chosen the Holiday
Toy Room Program.
Sandy DeLuca, Community Relations Manager for Summit
County Children Services, (shown below) spoke at our November
6 meeting to explain the project.

SAILORS -GET READY FOR NEXT SUMMER !!!
The class always generates a lot of discussion, with sailors
sharing their own experience on products, techniques, and seamanship. If you're a sailor, you'll increase your knowledge and
improve your skills. If you're thinking of buying a sailboat, you'll
benefit from the advice of the sailboat owners in the class. And
if you're a power boater, we might even convert you!
We usually start each night around 6:45 with a video of a cruising destination. The class runs from 7 to 9 PM, and we often
meet after the class for some socializing and comparing notes.
How many sailors spend hours each spring getting boats ready
for summer – touching up bottom paint, waxing, cleaning teak,
installing new gadgets -- yet don't spend five minutes thinking
about improving their sailing techniques? If you'd like to change
all that, NOW is the time to register for Akron Sail and Power
Squadron's SAIL course.
The course will start January 28 (Wednesday), and will be
taught at Cuyahoga Falls High School. P/D/C Brian Logan, SN,
will be lead instructor.
Contact Brian to register
([email protected] or 330-864-2820).
A preview from some previous classes can be found at http://
www.batswings.com/. Scroll down the right hand of the page
and select the button for “Akron Power Squadron Sail Class”.
Take the SAIL course -- think of it as "fitting out" for your brain!
Respectfully submitted,
P/D/C Brian Logan, SN
The SAIL course starts with the basics, describing the characteristics of different boat designs, different "parts" of a sailboat,
and boat handling. It also covers, in layman's terms, forces that
make a sailboat 'go'. Then the course ties these concepts together, suggesting ways that you can make your boat handle better
and sail faster. You'll learn about sail trim, 'balancing' your boat,
and heavy-weather techniques.

Let’s Welcome
Old Salty
Lt/C Greg M Arnold, JN
To the Scuttlebutt
W
Dear Salty,
After my boat came out
of the water, I was in a
bad mood and got in a
fight with my girlfriend.
She was sore at me and
dropped me like a hot
potato. I guess that’s ok
cause she and I weren’t
always the best of pals,
but I gotta say, I’m worried about when my boat
goes back in the water.
She’s my next door dock
neighbor! What do I do when I see her in the spring?
ell it's hard to believe another
year is almost over. I hope everyone has a wonderful and
restful holiday season.
November 15th we had a wonderful time at the 75th Anniversary Dinner. Thank you to P/C Dick Klespies, JN and Lt Linda Klespies, S for hosting us, as well as P/D/C Brian Logan, SN and the
75th Anniversary Committee for their hard work in putting this
dinner together. It has certainly been a fun and successful Anniversary year, with a lot of great memories!!!
Signed,
Worried She’ll Pull My Drain Plug
Dear Worried,
It’s a sad day on the sea when the skipper fears for the
safety of his boat because of his own bad temper! You’d
best be sending a peace offering of some sort. Do it now,
and maybe you’ll both be able to forget each other over
the long winter. The exact gift will depend on the severity
of your social breach. If you’re still anxious in the spring
(Good grief, Boy, what DID you say to that woman?),
you’ll just have to suck it up and ask the dockmaster to
find you a new slip. And if that doesn’t take care of it, this
last bit of advice will save your sorry you-know-what: Get
a boat dog! Better yet-get a puppy! No one can resist a
boat puppy. Even if the romance is dead, this kind of
puppy love will live on. In the future, mind your moods,
Son, mind your moods.
Past and Current Commaders present at 75th Anniversary
Wrap Up Dinner. How many can you name?
Now for our final trip down memory lane…. on December 7th
1939, Lou Gehrig was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame at the
age of 36. December 15th saw the premier of "Gone With The
Wind" in Atlanta. In case you had a new motor on your Christmas
list, Santa could have brought you a Neptune 2 hp motor for
$54.50 or a 4 hp for $74.50, although they would weigh his sleigh
down some at 30 lbs. and 40 lbs. respectively.
Regards,
Salty
And to all you readers out there, I’ll give you my advice
too—just drop me a line at [email protected]
