Details Page 11 Page 4 November 2014 D R A GON TA LE S FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMANDER: Cdr Stephan Woessner, P I would like to start my term as commander by saying thank you to all of you for allowing me the opportunity to serve in this distinguished role. I will do my best to live up to the high standards of the office and to try to fill some very big shoes left behind by Commander Earl Gillespie. Over the past two years, Earl has done an exceptional job as commander. His effort, dedication and strong drive for results have been instrumental in moving the Squadron forward through some challenging times. I would also like to give a very big thank you to Lucy Hixenbaugh and all the members who helped make the past District 23 Fall Conference a huge success and for an outstanding Change of Watch event. THANK YOU!! As I look forward, it is clear that we still face significant challenges, such as low membership growth levels, lack of a full bridge and the general viability/relevance of the Squadron in a rapidly changing world. To succeed we will need to come together as: ONE TEAM All of our members working together, bringing their experience, skills and talents to bear on a single plan aimed at building a bright future for the BRSPS. ONE PLAN Continue to aggressively restructure our education offerings, community service activities and fun on the water activities to meet the changing demands and expectations of the modern boating community. Accelerate the development of our web-site capabilities and substantially enhance our Squadron’s online presence. Properly finance our Squadron by paying our dues on time and actively participating in the development and execution of various fund raising activities throughout the year. Put aside our differences and work more closely with each other and the other Squadrons in D23 ONE GOAL An exciting viable Banana River Squadron delivering value to our members, the local community and the other Squadrons in D23. As a first step on our ONE PLAN journey, I would ask for maximum member participation in the following: November General Meeting/Thanksgiving Dinner – Nov 17th at the Sat. Bch. Civic Center December General Meeting/Christmas Party – Dec 13th at the Coco Village Marina (big thank you to Terry Friedlander for coordinating this event) BRSPS Christmas Boat Parade – Tickets are available for the BRSPS Christmas Party Boat, which will afford you an outstanding view of the entire parade in a comfortable and friendly environment. (cost is $20 per person and warm beverages are available on the boat) I would like to again thank you for the opportunity to serve as your commander and I know that if we come together as ONE TEAM around ONE PLAN we will achieve our ONE GOAL of an exciting viable squadron delivering value for all. Cdr Stephan Woessner, P Page 5 November 2014 D R A GON TA LE S FROM THE SQUADRON EDUCATIONAL OFFICER: P/C Bill Veit, JN Announcing Classes for 2015 ABC3 Jr. Safe Boating Seamanship Piloting Advanced Piloting Weather Safety News: The Coast Guard is working with the PFD community to revise the classification and labeling of PFDs. When completed, this information will be updated and hopefully be somewhat easier to understand. Meanwhile, spending a few minutes to understand the many options available to find a PFD that you’re willing to wear could mean the difference between life and death for you or a loved one. Shipboard the answer is as long as you don’t die of old age or some other affliction. A “gallows” is an upright structure consisting of two vertical members, one on each side, supporting a horizontal member used for supporting spare spars, or the boom of a fore and aft sail. On land, your odds might not be so good. New question: Does anyone care? P/C Bill Veit, JN Page 6 D R A GON TA LE S FROM THE SQUADRON SECRETARY: November 2014 Lt/C Jamie Woessner, AP GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES: General Meeting/Change of Watch DATE: October 5, 2014 LOCATION: Hilton Hotel, Indian Harbor Beach, FL The meeting was called to order at 1400 by P/D/C Robert Becker, SN. Submitted by Jamie Woessner, Secretary October 16, 2014 SHARE YOUR COPIES OF THE ENSIGN Ken Peters is asking that you please bring old but recent copies of The Ensign to our November Thanksgiving Dinner/General Meeting. He would like to distribute the copies to new members and to folks taking the ABC3. Please help Ken out with this great idea to learn about National and the work of local Squadrons. Page 7 D R A GON TA LE S November 2014 “P/D/C George Ralph Fontes, AP” It is with great sadness that our Squadron announces the death of George Fontes. George was a valuable member of our Squadron and District 23. He served as our Commander from 1998-1999 and was the District Commander from 2005-2006. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Kathleen, his four sons David, Mark, Ronald and Bruce and four stepchildren and all of their families. He was a proud grandfather of nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. DISTRICT 23 FALL CONFERENCE Please see the December issue of Dragon Tales for a full recap of the entire weekend including lots of photos. How ever, we did not want to wait another month without acknowledging the hard work of all the volunteers under the leadership of Lucy Hixenbaugh. I think we can collectively agree the “Signature Squadron Drink” still reigns, the Penny Creek Blue Grass Band was wonderful and we all left being inspired and far more knowledgeable about Florida history than when we arrived thanks to Judge Nelson Bailey. Terri and Dan Friedlander Give Yourself the Gift of Joy – Be a Salvation Army Bell Ringer Those who have volunteered in the past to be Bell Ringers for the Salvation Army know that it’s a great way to give back to the community while giving ourselves that special feeling of holiday spirit. We have submitted our application for several Satellite and Indian Harbour Beach grocery locations for the 14 November – 24 December campaign. I will receive more details soon about where and when but right now I am asking all interested individuals to email ([email protected]) or call (482-5671) me to give me a rough idea of dates, times (like morning, afternoon or evening) and number of hours you would consider volunteering. Don’t delay, we were too late last year and missed out. Within the next two weeks I will be laying out a final plan with the Salvation Army based upon your inputs. Thanks for considering this impactful and time-proven way of donating to our local community.
