Conference Description:
T
he 28th year of the Gravens Conference provides us with an opportunity to
explore the current state of neonatal care and to envision a future that best
supports the high-risk infant, the family and the team of professionals
assisting in the baby’s care.
Over the past quarter century, neonatal care providers have worked tirelessly to
mitigate the stress experienced by neonates, parents and providers. Doing so has
involved change and its inherent struggles, but eventually
we have come through the process by adapting our NICU
culture, policies and approach. With the promotion of
evidence-based knowledge in neurodevelopmental
science, developmental care, healthcare design, and family
support at the annual Gravens Conference, we endeavor to
nurture the developmental needs of babies and the
emotional and informational needs of their parents.
Join us in Clearwater Beach, Florida, in March of 2015 to
continue our research, learning and practice as we
examine ‘Through the eyes of the baby, family, and staff’.
The most current science, state-of-the-art research and
leading practices will be presented in three key conference
tracks: developmental care, healthcare architecture and
design, and family support.

This program has been developed to meet the educational needs of healthcare
practitioners such as Neonatologists, Pediatricians, Occupational Therapists,
Parents / Families, Neonatal Nurse Clinicians / Practitioners, Family Support Staff,
Architects, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Hospital Administration, Infant / Child
Development Specialists / Social Workers / Counselors, and other professionals
working with high-risk infants, their families or their physical environment.

Accreditation:
Certificates of Attendance or certificates of continuing education credit are obtained
online after the event.
Physicians: USF Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. USF Health designates
this live activity for a maximum of 20.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim
only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurses: USF Health is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. A maximum of 20.25 contact hours
may be earned by learners who successfully complete this continuing nursing education activity.
There are no pre-requisites for nurses to participate in this activity. To complete this course, nurses
must sign in each day, participate in all activities and complete the course evaluation.
Florida Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed
Mental Health Counselors: USF Health is an approved provider (BAP# 433—exp. 3/31/15) of
continuing education credits for clinical social work, marriage and family therapy, and mental health
counseling. This program has been reviewed and approved for up to 24.25 contact hours.
Florida Licensed Occupational Therapists: USF Health is an approved provider (# 107, exp.

Certified in Public Health (CPH): The College of Public Health at the University of South Florida is

2015 Conference Highlights:
As a result of 2014 participant feedback, we made the following
changes to the conference:
The Grand Reception in the Exhibit Hall will occur during an extended lunch break on
Wednesday, March 4, 2015. Lunch with be provided. The reception is typically scheduled for
Wednesday evening.
Poster Presentations will take place during the lunch break on Wednesday,
March 4, 2015. The poster presentations are typically scheduled for Wednesday
evening.
Poster Contest. Posters will be judged by The Gravens Conference planning
committee members.
Photo Exhibit and Contest. A photo exhibit and contest is new for 2015. Judging will be
done by attendees. Photographs should relate to the conference theme ‘Through the eyes of the
baby, family and staff’, or can be any applicable NICU topic.
To participate: Each attendee can submit one photograph which will be displayed during the
Conference and will be voted on by conference participants. The photo and consent form (use the
form included in the brochure) should be submitted at http://www.dropitto.me/Gravens
(password NICU) by Friday, January 30th, 2015. When the photo and consent are uploaded, each
should be titled with the photographer’s name following this example: Rose, Bobbi. photo; and
Rose, Bobbi. consent. Each photo must have a consent for it to be included in the exhibit.
“Play Ball!” It was our intent to facilitate a group to attend a local spring training baseball game,
as there are many teams and fields in the local area. As it turns out, the only game played
“locally” (and that is a stretch) is the Toronto Blue Jays in Sarasota, FL, in the hour of 7:00 pm.
The drive would be at least an hour each way. The estimated return time would be close to
midnight. Thus, we are not organizing an outing for a baseball
game.

However, there are many fun activities in the area, and I will work
to create a list, along with the instructions for using public
transportation.

Gravens Conference Registration Fee Includes (per participant): Attendance at the
conference, continuing education credit, exhibits, Hartline reception, Exhibit Hall reception, Poster
session, continental breakfast and breaks each day, Award Ceremony dinner, and the conference
syllabus, which will be electronic. Note: You may pre-purchase a hard copy syllabus (3 ring binder) if
you prefer. Orders must be received by Wednesday, February 4, 2015.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellation notification must be made in writing (fax and email are
acceptable) and received by Wednesday, February 4, 2015. A cancellation fee of $100 will be
assessed. Cancellations received after February 4, 2015, will not be refunded, nor will ‘no shows’.
Substitutes are welcome without penalty. Please allow up to 3 weeks after the conference for any
refunds. USF Health reserves the right to cancel this activity due to unforeseen circumstances, in which
case, the full registration will be refunded. USF Health will not be responsible for travel expenses
incurred by participants in the unlikely event that the program is cancelled.

The Gravens Conference on the Physical and Developmental Environment of the High
Risk Infant, in collaboration with the March of Dimes, is dedicated to providing a forum for
the continuing education of professionals working to improve the health outcomes of
premature and sick newborns and their families, and to improve the professional
environment for caregivers. In particular, the conference focuses on the science of fetal
and infant development, developmental care practices, NICU design, family support
programs, and the influential role the NICU environment has on neurodevelopment of the
infant, function of the caregiving staff, and support for the family.
The conference committee invites you to submit an abstract for oral or poster
presentation regarding NICU design, the study of creative approaches to developmental
and environmental issues of the NICU, care practices and/or programs to assist staff,
parents and families. This conference offers an opportunity to share your work and
experiences with colleagues.

whether your abstract was selected for presentation.

Submitting an Abstract
The theme for the 2015 conference is ‘Through the eyes of the baby, family, and staff,’
but the abstracts can be on any applicable NICU topic.
Abstracts must include the following sections, as applicable, (1500 word limit):
1. Title of the abstract
2. Authors’ names, degree(s)/credentials, and institution
3. Background and Purpose: problem statement or hypothesis as appropriate
4. Budget and Resources: cost of program and materials as appropriate
5. Program, Materials, or Methodology: also include any barriers to implementation and how they have
been overcome
6. Impact or Results: major accomplishment of program / materials; qualitative and quantitative data;
evidence-based results, impact on stress, comfort, knowledge, and/or participation with the baby, and
especially any health related outcomes.
7. Bibliography: for oral presentations, at least 3 related references that support the program
8. Implications for Family Support (if applicable)
