What really surprised Jim was that he really likes doing color, low lights and highlights. “That’s when I said to
myself this is what I want to do!”
After passing his state boards last summer, Jim has become a stylist who stands out. He is currently one of
three male stylists in downtown Owosso including Keith
Krupp at The Nail Boutique and Collin Abrams at Embellish Salon, where Jim also works. “I feel I joined
a special club. Keith and Collin have been great and
so helpful.”
Working in a career that is dominated by women and being close to 50 is an interesting career choice, but Jim says
he loves it and that when his daughter Cara got married,
she let him cut her hair the next day. He asked her if she
thinks he would do okay in this career. She said, “I think
so,” and that is all that matters to him.

SafeCenter Awarded New
Sexual Assault Grant
SafeCenter was recently awarded a three-year grant to
provide sexual assault comprehensive services through the
State of Michigan Department of Human Services. The
grant began Oct. 1, 2014 and involves having a full-time
staff member designated to provide sexual assault services. With this addition, SafeCenter will be able to expand
available sexual assault services in Shiawassee and Clinton counties.
The Sexual Assault Advocate, whose position is funded
through the grant, will provide services to individuals who
have experienced sexual assault outside of the context of
intimate partner relationship. It also allows for the advocate to provide services to family members as well.
For those individuals who have experienced sexual assault in an intimate partner relationship, SafeCenter will
continue to provide this service through other funding
sources. Services available with this new funding include:
24 hour crisis hotline, emergency response services, individual and group supportive counseling, advocacy and
support services, such as legal and medical advocacy and
public awareness and systems change, informing the community about sexual assault and available services as well
as working with other area agencies in addressing unrepresented or marginalized groups.
SafeCenter is a non-profit agency whose vision is for all
individuals to experience the right to be free from violence. Their mission is to build comprehensive and sustainable community strategies to eliminate domestic and
sexual violence in Shiawassee and Clinton counties. For
more information regarding this new service or any services, persons may contact SafeCenter at 1-877-952-7283
or via email at [email protected].

DOWNTOWN’S NEWEST MALE HAIRDRESSER– It
is never too late to find something you love doing. Jim
Byce is proof of that. Faced with being laid off from a job
he had for over a decade in the medical field, Jim spent
months looking for a job much like a lot of people now
days, but couldn’t really find anything but truck driving
and nursing.
With the small severance they gave him, Jim decided to go
to school. The big question was what to go for, so he took
a personality test to see where his talents were strongest.
Much to his surprise, it came back saying that he should be
a cosmetologist. “I thought that was kind of funny, because
I took it in high school and never finished.”
After much debate with his girlfriend and being terrified of starting over at 47 years of age, he enrolled in
cosmetology. Attending Mane Street Academy full-time
to earn his license, Jim had his doubts. It occurred to
him, “I’m good at this,” but there were a few hurdles
to overcome. “The older ladies didn’t want a guy doing
their hair, but some sweet talking and letting them see
I could do it opened the door and I love them to death.”

Flu Activity on the Rise
With flu season in full force earlier than usual, health
professionals continue to urge those who have not yet been
vaccinated to do so. It is recommended that everyone age
6 months old and older get a flu shot. Some children between the ages of 6 months and 8 years require two doses
of the vaccine.
The increase in flu-like cases has also prompted Memorial Healthcare officials to continue the following visitor guidelines until further notice: *Visitors, aged 16 and
over, will be permitted to visit only if they are healthy (no
symptoms of any illness). *No visitors aged 15 and under.
*If you are experiencing severe flu-like symptoms contact
your healthcare provider immediately.
**Symptoms include: Runny or stuffy nose; Sore throat;
Dry cough; Fever (usually 100 F or more); Headache; Nausea; Vomiting; Body aches; Diarrhea.
**Individuals arriving at Memorial’s Emergency Department with respiratory symptoms will be required to wear
a mask.
Health Officials urge residents to take the extra precautionary steps. If you or your child feel sick, stay home to
prevent the spread of the virus.

PAUL Weisberger (standing) and Jeff Nemeth (seated) attended the Dec. 8 Owosso Planning Commission meeting to

Nemeth is with ACT Laboratories of Goodrich.
Weisberger talked about current legislation that would
allow for provisioning centers to be established in a more

Owosso ‘Emergency
Moratorium’
Two 90-day temporary emergency moratoriums were adopted by the Owosso City Council Monday night, one “on
the permitting of dispensaries” and the second “on permitting new smoking shops and Hookah Lounges.” Both
passed on a 6-1 vote, with Mayor Pro Tem Chris Eveleth
voting “No.”
The city’s hasty response came because of the presentation earlier this month at the city Planning Commission
(detailed above) about pending state laws. One provision
mentioned in a memo by Assistant City Manager/Community Development Director Susan Montenegro before
the planning commission meeting was on Medical Marijuana vending machines. During Monday night’s meeting,
she said the company which is interested in opening in
Owosso is “very well organized.”

HELPING – For Thanksgiving, SafeCenter families
(formerly RAVE) received
a donation of all the items
needed to provide a traditional Thanksgiving meal
for the women and children
who reside at the Emergency Shelter on N. Hickory in
Owosso. The American Legion Riders of Post 57 held
an event in October to raise
funds which they then used
to purchase the food for the shelter. Steve Gill, owner of J&S Firestone also assisted the
America Legion Riders in providing this meal by supplying the turkey.
“The American Legion Riders contacted me and asked to provide the dinner for the
women and children who stay at the shelter. SafeCenter was excited to have such a generous donation for the families in the shelter,” said Tonya Avery, executive director. “Having
the community come together to support our families lets them know they are not alone
during these difficult times.”
SafeCenter is a non-profit agency whose vision is for all individuals to experience the
right to be free from violence. Their mission is to build comprehensive and sustainable
community strategies to eliminate domestic and sexual violence in Shiawassee and Clinton counties. Services include a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter, counseling and
advocacy services and transitional housing. For more information, persons may contact
SafeCenter toll free, 1-877-952-7283.
Shown are American Legion Riders Post 57 members when they dropped off the Thanksgiving meal items.

St. John’s United Church of Christ, Washington at Oliver
in Owosso, will have Holden Evening Prayer so persons
can retreat from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas
season and gather silently in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m.
Dec. 18 for twenty minutes of peaceful and reflective
prayer and song.
The Longest Night Service is planned for 7 p.m. Dec.
20. In every church and community there are persons who
simply cannot enter into the joy of the Christmas season.
Some must deal with the recent death of a loved one. Some
are coping with the aftermath of divorce, job loss or sickness. The Blue Christmas, or Longest Night Service, is an
attempt to minister to the needs of such persons while still
recognizing that part of the reason for Jesus’ coming was
to bring hope and comfort, to heal the sick, to seek the lost
and to restore the broken.
Christmas Eve Service will be 7 p.m. Dec. 24 with an hour
of Scripture, poetry and music.
