First Congregational Church UCC will be hosting our
Annual Holiday Cookie Walk/Bazaar Saturday, Dec. 6
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a large selection of
Christmas cookies, candies, and baked goods. Shop a
variety of items to purchase, some handmade gifts, attic treasures and gift baskets. There will be door prizes
given out throughout the day with a light lunch available. The event will be held in the lower level Fellowship Hall at First Congregational Church UCC, 327 N.

The Memorial Healthcare Auxiliary will host its annual
Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Main Lobby of the hospital.
Each year, the Auxiliary begins the month of December
with a traditional Tree of Love Lighting Ceremony. In addition to the tree lighting, the St. Paul’s Children’s Choir
will perform and there will be story time with Santa.
Photos with Santa are available for $3. All proceeds from
Santa photos as well as donations collected through the
sales of snowflakes and doves on the Grand Tree of Love
will be used to purchase orthopedic surgical equipment.

Community District Library
to host a WWI Presentation
The Corunna/Caledonia Branch of the Community District Library will host a WWII presentation on Saturday,
Dec. 6 at 12:30 p.m. in honor of National Pearl Harbor
Day. The program is meant to honor all who served our
country during WWII and will feature the memoir of
Army Nurse Lt. Irene M. (Cox) Hosking who resides in
rural Corunna.
Mrs. Hosking kept a handwritten journal during the time
she served in Australia, from 1942-1945. Typing of the journal has been completed by volunteers and a bound copy will
be available for check-out from the library soon.
The program will include a slideshow of photos taken
from Mrs. Hosking’s scrapbook and a presentation by
Debra Bentley, who will share how she became dedicated
to honoring our WWII veterans and her great respect for
Mrs. Hosking and all who served. A brief informal question and answer time with Mrs. Hosking will follow.
Refreshments will be served following the program. The
library is located at 210 E. Corunna Ave., directly east of

CLARK WILLIAM “BILL”
HILL, age 76, of Owosso, passed
away Friday, Nov. 14 at Sparrow
Health System.
Funeral services will be held at
11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the
First Church of Christ with Pastor
Chris Higgins officiating. Internment will follow at a later date at
Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville, Mich.
Bill, the son of Clark William and
Vera (Mason) Hill Sr., was born on May 12, 1938 at his
grandparent’s home in Nashville, Mich. He married Linda
Rae Hon on June 3, 1961 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
After graduating from Vermontville High School in 1956,
Bill attended Central Michigan University on a basketball
scholarship. He later finished his Bachelor’s Degree at
Northern Arizona University and then went on to receive
his Master’s Degree at Michigan State University.
He was employed by Owosso Public Schools for 34 years,
where he taught at Owosso Junior High and then became
the Principal of Washington Elementary School. After retiring he found it very rewarding to volunteer as a reading
mentor with elementary students. The relationships that
he built with his students over the years were ones that he
treasured and maintained for a lifetime.
Bill was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed his coaching years
with the OHS Freshmen Football Teams and volunteering
with various basketball programs. He was a passionate fan
of the Michigan State Women’s Basketball Team as well
as being an all-around true Spartan. He loved annually
attending the Spartan Marching Band for Kids Concert
benefiting the Sparrow Children’s Center. One athletic
achievement that brought him great pride was running the
Boston Marathon in 1982.
Over the years, Bill maintained many hobbies. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, creating stained glass pieces and
attending his grandchildren’s activities. Bill was an active
member of the First Church of Christ, Toastmasters, Shiawassee Arts Center and Owosso Public Schools Foundation. His cottage up north was a place where he loved
getting away and sharing it with family and friends. Bill
traveled to many countries with his wife, most recently to
Chile to visit their exchange student Claudia Romero. He
enjoyed meeting new people. He never met a stranger and
always found a friend.
Bill is survived by his wife Linda; children Laura (Paul)

FRANCES PRASKI, age 96, of
Owosso, passed away Friday, Nov.
14 at the Hospice House of Shiawassee County.
A memorial service was held
Monday, Nov. 17 at Nelson-House
Funeral Home.
Frances was born October 3, 1918
in St. Johns, the daughter of Valentine and Julia (Durdina) Bernat.
She attended a one room school
in St. Johns and was a member of
St. Paul Catholic Church.
Frances enjoyed fishing and trips to the casino. Most
of all she cherished her time spent with her children,
grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great
grandchildren.
Frances was owner of Jerry’s Bar (Sportsman’s Inn) in
the late 60’s and later spent time working as a cook at
Pleasant View and Owosso Country Club.
Frances is survived by her daughters Patricia Raisbeck,
Kathleen (Victor) Spaniola and Christine Praski; son Rick
(LuAnn) Praski; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren
and four great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews
and other loving family and friends. And her fur baby
companion, Trudy.
She was predeceased by her sons Robert Praski and Walter (Kay) Praski, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

MICHAEL JAMES MCCLOSKEY, age 82, of Owosso, passed
peacefully the evening of Tuesday,
Nov. 11 at his home.
He was born May 14, 1932 in
Sykesville, Penn., the youngest son
of John and Mary (Numerget) McCloskey’s six children.
Per his wishes, he was cremated.
Memorial arrangements are pending at this time.
Mike was a member of St. Joseph
Catholic Church and served in the United States Army
during the Korean Conflict.
On March 14, 1953, Mike married Joan Suchanek at Sacred Heart Church in Flint, Mich.
After 38 years of employment, he retired from Consumers Energy as District Manager. His adult life was marked
by his active involvement in his church, community and
local government.
Mike is survived by his wife Joan; children Lee Ann
(Barry) McGinnis, Tim (Sue) McCloskey, Mick (Julie)
McCloskey, Lori Yeager and Betsy (Norm) Burger.
He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Jamie and Tim McGinnis, Patrick (Krystina), Colin, Sean
and Katie McCloskey, Mason and Matthew Yeager, and
Ben and Mark Burger, and many dearly loved nieces
and nephews.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hospice
House of Shiawassee County.

Owosso Musicale wishes to thank citizens for their attendance and support of the Veterans Tribute held Nov. 10
at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Owosso.
The event gave opportunity for the community to gather
for patriotic songs in faith. Selections from the documentary “Let us be free,” described the challenges of my
mother, Hanna Leja of Owosso, a teenage girl during the
five-year Nazi occupation of Poland, the Warsaw Uprising
and life as a POW, enhanced by Hanna’s piano music.
Area residents who attended gave over $600 to benefit
Respite Volunteers of Shiawassee.
Owosso Musicale has been a part of the National Federation of Music Clubs since 1936. “It is with faith in friendship, God and country that we stand secure within the
bonds of our Federation through music.” Our mission is
“to support and promote all music endeavors of all children, youth, and adults within our club, community, county and beyond.”

will hold its education meeting 7 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Baker

of Industrial Drive). It is open every Saturday, 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. until the end of the Leaf Season (usually the first
Saturday in December).

Brush collection rules include: brush must be out to the
curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day. No brush piles are to be
placed at the curb before Monday of the pickup week.
Tickets may be issued.
Brush must be no larger than 3 inches in diameter and no
longer than eight feet long. Remove all roots, stumps and
dirt. Place brush with the biggest cut end toward the curb
– neatly stacked away from trees, signposts, guide wires,
fire hydrants and fences. Do not place brush on sidewalks
or in the street. Do not place brush in alleys – it will not
be picked up. Tickets may be issued.
The following material will not be collected: Brush
cut or trimmed by contractors. Persons hired by the
property owners are responsible for removing material.

Building, in the block north of the landmark Shiawassee
County Courthouse. SCHD offices are open 8 a.m. to

Memorial Cancer Center offers a variety of cancerrelated support groups for individuals who have had cancer or currently have a cancer diagnosis. Support groups
offer a friendly and supportive environment for cancer patients and their loved ones to learn about treatments, care
options and coping techniques. Group sessions also provide a chance for individuals to talk to others who share a
similar experience.
Depending on your needs, support groups assist with
specific conditions and issues, while others are more general in nature. Cancer support groups meet once a month
with the Cancer Support Group (Life Goes On) meeting
on the first Monday of the month from 3:30 to 5 p.m., with
special Breast Cancer Support from 4:30 to 5 p.m.; and the
Prostate Cancer Support Group (Us Too) meets the third
Monday of the Month from 7 to 8 p.m.
Groups are open to current cancer patients as well as
cancer survivors. Family members and support persons
are also welcome. Groups explore a variety of topics related to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
All cancer support groups meet in the Community Room
at the Memorial Cancer Center at 721 N. Shiawassee St.,
