Inherit the Wind is a classic piece of historical fiction that recreates all the tension
and drama of the original Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925.
In a small Southern town, a school teacher, Bertram Cates, is about to stand trial.
His offense: violating a state law by introducing Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species
to his high school biology students. Appearing on behalf of the prosecution is the
famous Matthew Harrison Brady, a noted statesman and 3-time presidential candidate. A surprise is in store for Brady, however. The teacher’s defense is to be
handled by the equally well-known Henry Drummond, one of America’s most controversial legal minds of the 20th century and a long-standing acquaintance and
adversary of Brady.
“Brilliant . . . a colorful, picturesque and absorbing exciting essay in dramatic
Americana . . .”--NY Post.

FAFSA - Financial Aid for Seniors!
We recommend that all seniors complete the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid. This is the first step for all students
to receive grants, subsidized and unsubsidized loans, and other
money for college. The quickest way to apply is online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. Although you cannot technically apply
until January 1, parents can start this process NOW by going
to www.pin.ed.gov and applying for a pin number. Note in
many e-mail systems this pin number gets sent to the bulk
mailbox, so be careful you don’t delete it. The Michigan
deadline for filing the FAFSA is March 1. You can always
use last year’s tax forms to complete the FAFSA and then
make any changes once your 2014 taxes are completed.
State Required Testing for Juniors
In order to graduate, all students must complete the ACT
plus Writing and ACT WorkKeys on March 3-4, 2015.
Students interested in taking the ACT exam additional times,
the remaining 2014-15 ACT exam dates are listed below.
Please note that most colleges will consider the highest score
if a student takes the ACT more than once.
If you were unable to attend our Financial Aid Workshop in
October, there is another free FAFSA workshop for senior
parents offered on Sunday, February 8, 2015 from
2pm - 4pm called College Goal Sunday. Financial aid experts
will help parents fill out the FAFSA form; they just ask you to
bring the family’s completed 2014 tax forms. This meeting
will take place at Macomb Intermediate School District, 44001
Garfield Road, Clinton Township, MI For more details, go to
www.MICollegeGoal.org.
College Testing
Did you know ACT has a website for parents to help sort
through the ins and outs of college planning? Visit
www.actparent.org for more details.
8th Grade Welcome Night - February 11th - 6:30-8pm
Parents and 8th grade students are invited to attend this
informational meeting about Lake Orion High School
scheduling, curriculum, clubs, sports, and activities. This is a
very important meeting. We hope to see you there!
College Information Night will be scheduled in March,
the date TBD.
• Representatives from many colleges will be at LOHS
to provide information and answer questions.
• Presentations on topics such as: Applying to College,
Financial Aid/Scholarships, 2 Year College/Transferring
to a 4 Year College Options and more will take place
throughout the night.
This is the only Lake Orion Community Schools sponsored
college prep/financial aid seminar. There is no cost associated
with this workshop.
Students Interested in Playing College Sports
Seniors must register with NCAA Eligibility Center if interested in playing a sport at a Division I or Division II college.
Juniors can register anytime this year. Registration can be
done at www.eligibilitycenter.org. Please contact
Mrs. Bell in the counseling office for more information at
[email protected] or call 248-693-5640.
The Michigan Department of Education has mandated that
all juniors will take an additional state assessment between
April 13, 2015 through June 1, 2015. LOHS will provide a
schedule to follow as we become more familiar with the
required assessment.
ACT vs SAT What’s the Difference? Colleges in Michigan are most accustomed to looking at ACT scores but will
accept SAT scores as well. Universities nationwide accept
either test. ACT is a test of achievement, based on curriculum and measures “classroom” intelligence. SAT is a test of
aptitude and tests more a “general” intelligence. The tests
also differ regarding format, subjects tested, scoring, level of
math, guessing and whether or not they include a career component.

Must-Have Apps for Successful High School Students
The Chemical Touch
This app’s touch-sensitive periodic table will help make
chemistry class much more interactive.
Select different elements to learn more about their properties and get definitions of nucleobases, as well. You can
even sort the table with different colors to identify periodic
trends — and hopefully, make your chemistry homework less
complex than amino acids. If you need in-depth explanations
of different concepts, the app will open Wikipedia entries.
The Chemical Touch costs $0.99 and is available for iOS
devices.
Essentials by AccelaStudy
Learning a foreign language is a core part of high school
curriculum. Whether you’ve enrolled in fourth period French,
Italian, Spanish or Chinese, this app will be your study guide.
It provides pre-made flashcards for learning vocab and audio
quizzes to help your speech and pronunciation.
It’s free.
Evernote Peek
Making flashcards is a tedious process that most students don’t have time for. Evernote Peek takes the work out
of the process. The app turns your iPad and Smart Cover
into makeshift flashcards. And don’t worry, if you don’t have
a cover, the app creates a “virtual cover.”
Strengthen your memory easily and for free.
Frog Dissection
Slicing open a frog in biology class is fun for some, but
for others, it can be messy and uncomfortable. This app removes the formaldehyde. You can still learn about the ins and
outs of a frog’s anatomy, but without the amphibian juice.
Vivid 3D imaging also lets you study detailed internal organs.
It’s $3.99, but worth it if you prefer to stay animal-friendly.
Graphing Calculator
Graphing calculators are expensive, but it’s almost impossible to get your calculus homework done without one.
Consider investing in this app instead.
It quickly plots and traces multiple equations on the same
graph, using a custom keyboard to speed up entry. It even
supports graphing polar and parametric equations and much,
much more. Plus, you can take screenshots of your calculator to email graphs to yourself.
It only costs $2.99, a bargain compared to a real
calculator.
Math Formulas
Struggling to keep your trigonometry formulas separate
from your algebraic formulas? This app is your math savior.
It stores frequently used formulas for easy access and
lets you favorite the apps you reference the most. It even
delves into calc, geometry and probability, and displays images so you can put the formulas into perspective.
It only costs $0.99.
Easel SAT Prep Lite
The SAT is one of the most important tests in a high
schooler’s career. This app makes preparation easy and hasslefree, so you can keep your sights on test day.
The app features three sections with 25 questions each
and a “show me” function, which explains how to arrive at
the right answer.
Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on SAT prep test
books, you can use this app for free.
Shakespeare
High school wouldn’t be complete without the complete
works of William Shakespeare. However, understanding the
intricate passages of Romeo and Juliet is no easy task.
This app will help ease your English class pains. It contains 41 Shakespearean plays and 154 sonnets to view on
your iPhone or iPad. The app supports a glossary of common
Shakespearean phrases and will provide detailed scene breakdowns of locations and characters in each act.
And the best part — it’s free.
Studious
Instead of organizing your daily class schedule and homework assignments in a planner, turn to Studious to keep you
on track. The app lets you set due dates for assignments and
will remind you when big exams are approaching.
Forget to silence your phone before class? The app will
silence your phone during times you’ve scheduled on your
calendar.
It’s available for free in the Google Play Store.
World Atlas
This is the app you need to succeed in geography class.
It provides high-res images with detail and accuracy beyond
any Google image.
For help in history class, the app provides world flags
and facts about each country, including government types and
capitals. Switch between three different map styles, including classic, antique and satellite. Bookmark your favorite places
as well.
World Atlas costs $0.99.

LOHS Students Qualify
as Michigan Math Prize Finalists
Of the 5400 Michigan students who participate in October in Part 1 of the Michigan Math Prize Competition, we
had 61 students who participated, and 14 of our students
placed in the top 1100. Ryan Capouellez has the distinction
of having earned the top score at LOHS. Congratulations
to the following 2014 finalists.
Cameron Buccellato
Ryan Capouellez
Kyle Duffey
Dominic Fosmoen
Zachary Gdowski
Kevin Hansen
Lucas Heilman
Phoebe Holmes
Duncan Kirkpatrick
Jenna Losensky
Nathan Palatka
Lisa Tir
Kathryn Tyrrell
Schuyler Werth
As qualifying finalists, these 14 students will take Part II
of the exam on December 10, 2014. Part II of the exam
consists of five challenging problems to which the students
must provide written explanations for their claims and mathematical proofs of their results.
Students with the top 100 scores on the two parts will be
invited to an awards program in February at Eastern Michigan University. The top 50 students will be presented with
scholarships ranging from the bronze awards of $250 to
$2,500 for the first place gold medalists.
On Saturday, November 1st the Dragon Marching Band
competed in the State Finals at Ford Field. They had their
best performance to date and finished in 4th place in the
state with a score of 92.625, which was less than one-half
of a point from second place. They will be performing in
the Bands of America Grand National Championship at
Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Friday, November 14th.
On Saturday, October 4th, the Dragon Marching Band performed at the Bands of America
Toledo Regional held at the University of
Toledo’s Glass Bowl. Even with the high winds,
nagging rain and electronic issues, the Dragons
reached the finals of a BOA regional for the 9th
straight year, moving up a place to finish in 7th place in the
finals competition. Their show was definitely one of the
crowd’s favorites of the day. The competition was a regional and featured bands from four different states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.
On Saturday, October 18th, the Dragon Marching Band
competed at Clarkston. Their score of 90.250 was the
highest score in school history, earning the band second place,
a mere 0.450 behind last year’s state champion, Walled Lake
Central. Both bands tied for the award “Best General
Effect.”
On Saturday, October 25th, the Dragon Marching Band
had their final performance at Troy Athens, which was their
last competition before State Finals at Ford Field. The Dragons once again set a new record for the highest score in
school history with a 92.950, finishing in second place behind Plymouth Canton.
Tutoring Academic Support
National Honor Society Tutoring
Junior and senior students who are members of the National
Honor Society are available for tutoring based on each
student’s academic strengths. A list of NHS students, the
academic areas they are able to tutor, and their phone numbers are available in the counseling offices.
Direct Tutor List
The Lake Orion School District compiles a list of adults willing to tutor, and it is available in the counseling offices. This
list is revised annually and includes information about fees,
location, hours of availability, academic areas, and grade levels for each tutor.
Blended Learning at LOHS
Under the supervision of Principal Steve Hawley and Drew
Towlerton, Coordinator of Educational Opportunities, the high
school is continuing to expand opportunities for our students
by offering several classes in a blended learning format.
Blended Learning, as defined by the district, is “a method that
combines traditional face-to-face activities with online education. A blended learning classroom uses technology to transform and improve the learning process. Blended learning
classes can reach and engage students in a more customizable
way. Students learn, at least in part, through online delivery
of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path or pace (this will vary from class to
class and instructor to instructor). This may include the opportunity for students to work off-site during the blended class
period provided requirements for off-site participation are met.”
Blended Learning differs from Online Classes in that students
meet regularly with their teacher receiving both instruction
and feedback online and face-to-face.
Blended learning is increasing at all educational levels but
particularly at the high school and college level. According to
a 2012 report by the National Association of State Boards of
Education, the advances in educational technology have necessitated a reevaluation of traditional instructional methods.
Given the instant communication and access to information
currently available, the educational experience of today’s student should reflect the world in which they live. Blended
learning utilizes various online resources to provide students
with the opportunity to personalize their learning experience
and is shown to increase student engagement with instructional content. According to Heidi Mercer, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, while blended learning
may not be the right choice for all students, offering a variety
of educational opportunities for Lake Orion students is an important step toward preparing them for future experiences
beyond Lake Orion High School.
Lake Orion administration has fully supported the development of blended learning classes by providing staff with ongoing professional development opportunities and guidance in
the creation of blended learning curriculum. Staff members
across the district have participated in courses to increase
their blended learning skills. One such opportunity is a rigorous 60+ hour course for educators interested in using blended
learning sponsored by the Michigan Department of Education entitled Blended Learning in the Classroom.
Several blended courses are being taught this year and many
more will be introduced in the coming years. Business teacher,
Kevin Stone is currently teaching a Blended Learning Computer Applications course. He writes, “I am excited to start
my first Blended Computer Applications class this term. I
have spent a lot of time and effort preparing for this, so it is
nice to finally see it come to fruition. It is exciting to be able
to offer this unique method of learning to my students. I hope
to eventually offer more classes in this format.”
Modern Language teacher, Jen Howe taught a blended German Conversation class last school year and currently offers
a blended learning option for her German 2 class. “My experience with German Conversation was great; the students
provided me with lots of feedback about what worked best
for them. It was a first period class with 28 kids. We had
three face-to-face days a week and two online days. During
the face-to-face days, we did German songs, readings, vocabulary practice and writing, brainstorming, and editing. On
the online days, they submitted journal entries, surveys, projects,
and speaking assignments.”
These are a few of the blended choices that our junior and
senior students have available as well as a blended Expository Reading and Writing class offered by English teacher,
Kelly Day. Later this year, Rick Messick from the Math
Department will teach an Introductory Statistics blended class
and Russ Stowers from the Science Department will teach a
blended Zoology class. We look forward to providing more
blended learning opportunities to our students in the coming
years.
Reflecting on the continuing development of blended learning
at LOHS, Drew Towlerton writes, “Lake Orion has worked
hard over the past few years to develop a blended learning
program that provides a unique learning opportunity for students. Through our blended program, students are able to
experience curriculum that is developed and delivered by Lake
Orion staff. It has been vitally important to our team that we
are consistent in our procedures, policies, and expectations as
we have rolled out our blended program. Lake Orion has a
rich tradition of providing unique, high quality educational experiences. Our blended program continues this rich Lake
Orion tradition.”
