EWTN Holiday Viewing Take a moment to sit back, put up your feet, and enjoy The Forsaken on Tuesday, December 30 on EWTN at 5:30 pm. This thirty minute documentary, featuring the Archdiocese of St. Louis mission program Pan y Amor, will open your eyes to the lives of children who have been rescued from living on the streets of Cochabamba and La Paz, Bolivia. Prior to being rescued, these children barely survived and often went to sleep hungry and on the streets. Emmy award winner Chuck Neff does an extraordinary job of capturing the struggles of these innocent children and their quest for a brighter future. This is a show you don’t want to miss!! CHRISTMAS and NEW YEARS OFFICE HOURS The office will close at 2:15 pm on Wednesday, December. 24 and will reopen on Monday, December 29 at 8:30 am. On December 31st, we will close at 2:30 pm and reopen Friday, January 2nd at 8:30 am. YOUR GIFTS TO GOD AND PARISH Thank you for your continued support of St. Martin de Porres. Our parish is blessed with many generous parishioners who give so freely of time, talent and treasures. Due to the early deadlines for the holiday bulletins, donation numbers are not available. Dear Martins, From the Pastor’s Desk Merry Christmas! We prepared for Christmas day to behold the Word made flesh with “words to Word,” journey: Watch, Prepare, Voice and Behold. Let me briefly recap! “Watch” was on to look beyond. To look beyond is realized by the God given authority to look back and look forward. And looking back and looking forward begins with clearing up which was the second word “Prepare:” At the personal level, clearing up with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as a parish clearing up by the Vision 25 plan and as a nation clearing up the remaining racial residue of the past to emerge Beyond Ferguson! But a genuine clearing up is possible only when we are able to discern the voices that speak to us all the time! And Voice was our third word of reflection. For, we are amidst an onslaught of loud voices and voices have to be discerned! The echoes of our past experiences as individuals, as parishioners and as citizens; added to this voice is the increasing decibels of the media (and we think we are “free”!) giants, one controlled by a “fugitive” from another country, another promoted by a Cable corporation, third grandfathered from a former business tycoon and a whole lot of other media outlets and giants between these. Yes voices need to be discerned! Discernment is thoroughly a spiritual exercise. To discern which voice to obey, we need a foundation. It is this foundational framework that Jesus singularly preached and called as the Reign of God: Scriptures sum up the kingdom of God in three interlinked spiritual realities of Justice, Peace and Love. Jesus says that the Kingdom of God is in our midst, because he is born amidst as one among us. Mary listened to this voice. Only after discerning God’s voice she said, “Behold I am the hand maid of the Lord.” In fact Vision 25 is a systematic and spiritual journey of discerning the future of the parish. And so I am repeating the two requests from the last two weeks: The first is for a team of people who will work with me on this Vision 25 team. Pray and look for guidance if the Lord is prompting you to be part of this team. To be in this team you need have mind that is open and a heart to give your time generously. The Second, as your younger family members come in for the Christmas holidays, kindly encourage them to be part of Martin’s Wider Network. Instead of having a meeting I will distribute forms to be filled in by those attending our Christmas masses by those willing to be part of this MWN-Vision 25! On a personal note, after Christmas day I will be away for few days and I hope to be back for New Years eve mass at 4.30 P.M. (By mistake I booked a later flight on Dec 31, am trying to get an earlier flight and a change of flight is expensive). Fr. John Schneider would be here to fill in for me for masses and the Deacons would fill the need for communion services. Peace! Fr. Rp! Nathan seems to have spoken too soon when he told David to do whatever he wanted about building a house for the LORD. But later that night God gave him a message for David: the LORD did not need anyone to build him a house; God would make David's house (in the sense of family or descendants) last forever. That can be a lesson to us. Instead of just thinking before we speak, it could be a good idea to pray before we speak. How many times have we said something in anger (or selfishness, fear, any strong feeling) that we wished we could take back? If we just think before we speak, we might just rationalize what we wanted to say in the first place. But if you take a little more time to bring our feelings to God, ask for guidance and listen for what God would have us say, things might turn out a lot better. We can pray before making decisions about our family, taking a new job, buying a new house etc. When a friend or relative needs someone to talk to, we can pray that we listen well and say what God wants our friend to hear. If we have enough faith to let God guide our lives, let's take the time in prayer to listen for that guidance.—Paluch FOUTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT King David wished that the ark of God might have a more permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more: a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever. A kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike would be welcome. Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told (Luke 1:35). Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:26). TRADITION PRESERVED In recent years, the end of the baseball season has seen the passing of one old ballpark after another. The home of the local baseball team for decades is demolished even as the city’s new state-of-the-art stadium prepares to open in time for the next season. Traditions don’t pass on without a fight. When Atlanta replaced a stadium a few years ago, a helicopter lifted home plate from the old ballpark so that it could be replanted in the new one. The portion of the wall from Pittsburgh’s old Forbes Field that a World Series-winning home run flew over was never destroyed. Baseball is a game itself with very few rule changes. It is essentially the same as it was first played nearly one hundred fifty years ago. THE THRONE OF DAVID The church changes. Physical church buildings are remodeled or torn down. But whereas the game of baseball could eventually pass away, God’s house, the church, will never pass away. King David worried that the ark of God dwelled only in a temporary tent. The Lord assured David that the divine everlasting permanence rested on much more than a physical place. The House of David lived on in his decendants. When the angel Gabriel announces the birth of the Christ to Mary, we are told that God’s reign will have no end. To Mary’s Son God “will give . . . the throne of David his father; and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:32–33). In our world filled with a plethora of changes—most more significant than a game like baseball—we have trouble comprehending something without end. Today’s Gospel recalls the time when this message was first announced with full force. There are no other kings to come. This is only the beginning. Jesus’ reign is forever. Copyright © J. S. Our North County Catholic Schools are Filled with Advent and Christmas Blessings! Our Catholic Schools have so much to offer our students and community, and that is especially evident at this time of year. Students at each school in the Federation have spent the season of Advent in preparation for our celebration of Jesus’ birth. They have held food drives, “adopted” families in need with Christmas gifts, made Jesse Trees and Advent Wreaths, experienced the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and had many other opportunities to further develop their own personal relationships with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This environment of spirit and prayer in our schools exists throughout the year as students, teachers and parents demonstrate what it means to be communities Alive in Christ! The collaborative efforts of the Northeast Deanery schools and parishes will continue in the new year. We invite you to help us spread the good news about our local Catholic schools by joining us (and inviting a friend or neighbor) for an Open House: Catholic Schools Week 2015 Community Open House RESPECT LIFE The readings today and the closeness of Christmas reminds us that Christmas is not only the Feast of Christ's birth, but the celebration of the entire mystery of God taking on a human nature -beginning with Christ being conceived within Mary's womb. "God so loved the world that he gave His only Son" Jn 3:16. God redeems us by joining every aspect of our lives to his. God even becomes an unborn child. Human life was already sacred because it always was and is God's creation, made freely from his love. But in the Incarnation it takes on an even deeper meaning and sanctity, because human nature is forever united with Divine Life. This affects all who share human nature, even the children still in the womb. Today, we can also reflect on the Providence of God, in the fact that Mary was not expecting to carry a child, and was troubled at the greeting, yet no unexpected pregnancy has ever affected history so profoundly, and no woman besides Mary is a better example to those who feel they cannot handle a pregnancy. Oh Lord, prepare our hearts with your grace, so that like Mary, we may be a worthy dwelling place for You.
