Bulletin: 12/21 - Saint Francis of Assisi Parish

St. Francis of Assisi Parish
December 21, 2014 • Fourth Sunday of Advent
......................................................................................
From the Pastor’s Desk
T
ravel plans have been made to join family and
friends for Christmas. Some are excited to make
these journeys; others dread airports, traffic, or
bad weather. I hope that our travels will be a me
to bring good news, share new hopes, tell the stories of the
surprises that have occurred since we last were together with
these special people in our lives.
Today is the last Sunday of Advent. We
have three more days of the Advent Season
to finish up the last-minute “stuff ” before
Christmas. That “stuff ” can distract us from
the “stuff ” of the season. What might be
some of that “stuff ” to get us ready for the
reunions that happen this week? We might
take some me in the hec c days ahead to
decide what gi we will bring to those we will
be with this week.
Today’s readings remind us that what we
celebrate this week is a mystery—something
we know about, but only par ally. A mystery
con nues to reveal itself in me to those who
desire the revela on of the mystery—namely,
the mystery of God With Us. St. Paul reminds
us, “the mystery is now manifested through prophe c
wri ngs and according to the command of God.” You might
want to ask yourself, “Who have been the prophets who have
wri en or spoken to me and opened up my heart and mind to
the mystery of God coming into my life?
St. Luke reminds us in the gospel that Mary, the Mother
of Jesus, is visited by Gabriel, the messenger of God, with
strange news. He greets her as, “Mary Full of Grace.” This
implies that she is filled up to the brim with God’s love and
blessings. There is no room for anything more to make its
way into her being. Was she aware of this? Probably not!
Was this an invita on for her to look at herself in a new way?
Probably? Was she puzzled by the angel’s next words? “You
will bear a son and he will be the Son of the Most High!”
Absolutely!
How does she respond to these mysterious words? Mary
knows of no precedent that will tell her what to say or do.
WEEKEND MASSES
Saturday Vigil 5:15pm
Sunday 7:30am, 9:30am, Noon
WEEKDAY MASSES
(in St. Clare Chapel)
12:10pm
She has to figure it out on her own. She does not hesitate;
she simply says, “Yes!” with full trust and a willingness to accept the good news that “she is full of grace,” and to permit
the Holy Spirit to conceive the Good News in her being and to
bring that Good News to her family, to Elizabeth.
She will discover when she arrives in the home of Elizabeth that Elizabeth, too, has had an experience of the mystery
of God. She and her husband, Zachariah, discovered that God not only worked in the life
of a young woman who was “full of grace,”
but was also working in the old age of two
people who were good, but not necessarily,
“full of grace!” It’s never too late for God
to do great things for those who are open to
the invita on of grace—no ma er how bad
their “stuff ” seems to be.
Let us be open to God’s grace present
in our lives. Let us be aware of our own
goodness and holiness as proclaimed by the
messengers of God in our lives. What part
of the mystery have we discovered or are we
discovering? What is new to us that we can
bring to those we will be with this week?
Our awareness of the mystery does not have to be
expressed in words, but can be expressed in a change of
a tude, a simple smile or openness to the goodness of
others, an a tude of joy, of excitement and enthusiasm for
the gi of life; an awareness that all that is of God is good. In
the words a ributed to St. Francis, “Preach always, and use
words only when necessary.” This is the “stuff ” that we can
bring to the places we journey this week. This is the message
that St. Francis brought to Greccio, the li le village near
Assisi, when he presented the first “presepio,” or crèche, to
the villagers of Greccio 800 years ago.
Happy travels—and be sure to pack your “stuff!”

ur brothers and sisters who are

prayerful support. The cold, dark days
of winter are especially daun ng for
those who live their lives on the streets,
as is this me of year with its fes ve,

many of us want to share with those who are most vulnerable
among us. Please consider these opportuni es:

theme: Mary
The two families of Mary
and Elizabeth and their rela ves
and friends would have had
long discussions about the sad
condi on of their people. They
would have been concerned about
the different poli cal op ons of
Jews....Both John the Bap st and
Jesus were basically for nonviolent
approaches.... John and Jesus had
different life styles and approaches
but substan ally the same message
of socio-economic-poli cal libera on....
Mary would have been deeply distressed at the arrest
of John the Bap st.... It is a er the arrest of John that “Jesus
came into Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God.” His cousin
was arrested and beheaded, and Jesus decided to come out
into the open in Galilee. This would have been an important
and trying decision for both Jesus and Mary.

Mary witnessed how Jesus was captured and killed by
a combina on of the religious, poli cal and military powers.
The ques ons of the burial of Jesus and the guard set at his
tomb were also issues involving poli cal authori es. Therea er the life of the early Chris an community was closely
bound up with the a tudes of the poli cal rulers wherever
they went.

Mark wrote for an audience of nonJews who probably lived outside the Holy Land. He views
Jesus’ life—and thus, what it means to be a follower of Jesus,
through the lens of the two primary sacraments of the earliest Chris an churches—bap sm and the Lord’s supper.
Designated Donations

Mark’s response to the issue of non-Jewish
followers—or uncircumcised Gen les—ea ng the Lord’s
Supper together with the Jewish followers of Jesus—a highly
controversial act— makes Mark’s narra ve a powerful message of inclusivity. The first eight chapters of Mark’s gospel
show us Jesus himself beginning the mission to the Gen les, a
mission misunderstood and resisted by both his disciples and
his opponents.

A New Option During Communion
B
ishop Soto has approved Fr. Ken’s request, on
a trial basis, to offer mustum at Communion
me for those unable to consume alcohol. This
will be a new prac ce in the Diocese of Sacramento. Mustum is grape juice that contains no addi ves, and
in which the fermenta on process has been suspended. It is
available from only two sources in the United States.
PRAYER REQUESTS

Who Are Ill or in Pain
Joe Jernigan, Mary Padden, Judi Gilbert, Barbara Berger
Juanita Gu errez, Mary Jane Bacon
If you wish to receive the Blood of Christ in the form of
mustum, please let Fr. Ken know. Because it is being offered
on a trial basis, we need to keep count of how many people
ask for this op on, and we also need to know so that we can
prepare enough for all who wish to receive in this way. The
Blessed Sacrament in the form of mustum will be offered in
one cup next to the minister serving the low-gluten hosts at
the foot of the pillar just inside the K St. transept. As with the
minister offering the low-gluten hosts, this minister can be
iden fied by a nametag, “Mustum.”

It is also important for all Catholics to understand “that

the true Sacrament, is received even under only one species”
(General InstrucƟon of the Roman Missal 282; cf Catechism of
the Catholic Church, 1390).
