ECHOING MARY’S DECISION The angel Gabriel today confronts Mary with a mystery. The
mystery of salvation in Christ is not
a mystery that is solved, but a reality
beyond our comprehension that we
must choose to enter into. In the liturgy of the Eastern Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will enter
into the mystery: God waits, Adam
and Eve and all the souls of the dead
who long for paradise wait, angels
wait for new heavenly companions.
And there is much rejoicing when
her decision is “yes.”
We have less dramatic choices
offered to us, but the mystery of our
salvation in Christ is by no means
“solved.” We may understand it a bit
better due to Mary’s “yes.” We may
be a bit closer to it through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. But it still remains a mystery
to which we all must give our own
“yes.” Soon we will be singing “O
come, let us adore him.” May our
Advent prayer, our echo of Mary’s
“yes,” continue then, so we may enter into the mystery of our salvation
in Jesus Christ, God among us.

TO THE COMMUNITY OF ST. MARCELLINE
As we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of Jesus’ birth over 2,000 years ago this
week I’d like to share the story with you that I read at the beginning of this season of Advent.
If you recall, the Cherokee tribes have a story about creation that encourages a Christmas insight it’s called, “Why Some Trees Are Evergreen.”
When the plants and trees were first made, the Great Mystery gave a gift to each species. But first he set up a contest to determine which gift would be most useful to whom.
“I want you stay awake and keep watch over the earth for seven nights,” he told them.
The young trees and plants were so excited to be entrusted with such an important job that the
first night they did not find it difficult to stay awake. However, the second night was not so
easy, and just before dawn a few fell asleep. On the third night the trees and plants whispered
among themselves in the wind, trying to keep from dropping off, but it was too much work for
some of them. Even more fell asleep on the fourth night. By the time the seventh night came,
the only trees and plants still awake were the cedar, the pine, the spruce, the fir, the holly and
the laurel.
“What great endurance you have,” exclaimed the Great Mystery. “You shall be given
the gift of remaining green forever. You will be the guardian of the forest. Even in the seeming
dead of winter, your brother and sister creatures will find life protected in your branches.” Ever since then all the other trees and plants lose their leaves and sleep all winter while the evergreens stay awake.
This tale does not use the usual Advent symbols of light and darkness. It talks about
greenness in the midst of barrenness and associates this greenness with the ability to stay
awake. This season of Advent which comes to an end this week has challenged us to “stay
awake” and “be prepared” for the Lord’s coming. I hope that during this season you have
found time to do just that, spiritually. Merry Christmas and may God’s grace and peace be
yours.

By the year 800, when anointing was defined
as the proper office of priests, very complicated
rituals began to take shape. Perhaps this was to
reassure the laity, who had memories of an earlier practice, that the new way was not only better,
but impossible for a layperson to conduct. Blessings and sprinkling of holy water, the singing of
as many as seven psalms, penance, anointing of
all the senses, viaticum, all capped off by the
clothing of the sick person in penitential garments, were part of the rite. This proved unwieldy, and creative spirits got to work. By the
1500s people made distinctions between visiting
the sick, anointing, and viaticum.
The attempt of the Church to be faithful to
the image of a healing Christ has some complicated history, including centuries when the celebration was rare. Most sick people had no access
to the rites at all; only monastics or the well off
had much hope of this care. Today, those unhappy days are long behind us, and the care of the
sick is an essential task in every parish’s life. As
Christmas approaches almost everyone comes in
contact with someone who is a candidate for pastoral care. You live out the best of our tradition
when you arrange for a sick person to receive
Holy Communion or the sacrament of the sick
and the consolation of regular contact with the
faith community.

The search for longest married
couples continues. In addition to
honoring the longest married
couple for the entire United States, recognition will also be given to a couple from each
state and territories who has achieved that

King David wished that the ark of God might have a
more permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind
something more: a throne where David’s descendants would
rule for ever. A kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike
would be welcome.
Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she
was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told
(Luke 1:35).
Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered
in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret
known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul
wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of
faith” “according to the command of the eternal
God” (Romans 16:26).
God gave us the greatest gift of love
when He sent His son to redeem us.
He asks us to love one another as He
loves us. Take the time to grow deeper in love with God, your spouse and

TRADITION PRESERVED
In recent years, the end of the baseball season has
seen the passing of one old ballpark after another. The home
of the local baseball team for decades is demolished even as
the city’s new state-of-the-art stadium prepares to open in
time for the next season.
Traditions don’t pass on without a fight. When Atlanta replaced a stadium a few years ago, a helicopter lifted
home plate from the old ballpark so that it could be replanted
in the new one. The portion of the wall from Pittsburgh’s old
Forbes Field that a World Series-winning home run flew over
was never destroyed.
Baseball is a game itself with very few rule changes.
It is essentially the same as it was first played nearly one hundred fifty years ago.
THE THRONE OF DAVID
The church changes. Physical church buildings are
remodeled or torn down and replaced. But whereas the game
of baseball could eventually pass away, God’s house, the
church, will never pass away.
King David worried that the ark of God dwelled
only in a temporary tent. The Lord assured David that the
divine everlasting permanence rested on much more than a
physical place. The House of David lived on in his descendants.
When the angel Gabriel announces the birth of the
Christ to Mary, we are told that God’s reign will have no end.
To Mary’s Son God “will give . . . the throne of David his
father; and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and
of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:32–33).
In our world filled with a plethora of changes—most
more significant than a game like baseball—we have trouble
comprehending something without end. Today’s Gospel recalls the time when this message was first announced with
full force. There are no other kings to come. This is only the
beginning. Jesus’ reign is forever.
