Dear Friends,
As you probably know, two of our recent popes have been made saints by the
Church. They are John XXIII and John Paul II.
St. John XXIII was elected pope in 1958. In December of that year, he
celebrated his first Christmas Mass at the Vatican. It was also the first time that the
Church had the technology to broadcast the Mass worldwide on radio and TV. As the
oldest living organization on earth — 2,000 years old — the Church invited people from
everywhere in the world to come to Rome to attend this memorable event.
Present at the Mass were color-robed cardinals, bishops and priests, peasants
and intellectuals, poor and wealthy, believers and unbelievers, Catholics and
Protestants, average men and women. They represented people from every walk of life.
Though he was a new pope, most people were expecting the usual papal homily referring to the scriptural texts
as they pertained to the feast. How surprised the congregation was when it heard him begin his homily in his native
Italian by asking, “Who represented us at the first Christmas?”
Then he added, “If you say it was the angels, you would be wrong because angels do not have bodies like us.
If you say it was the shepherds, you would be wrong because the shepherds were farmers, and most of us are not. If
you say it was the Wise Men, you would be wrong because they were wealthy and highly educated, but most of us are
poor and stupid.”
John XXIII went on to say, “I will tell you who it was that represented us at the first Christmas: it was the
donkey.” Now you could see and hear the stirring and murmuring within St. Peter’s Basilica. Many of them were
probably feeling humiliated, especially those who brought non-Catholic guests along for the experience.
The pope proceeded to explain, saying, “The donkey was always feeling sorry for himself. He felt frustrated
and thought his life was too monotonous and meaningless. He was habitually unhappy. He would always walk around
with a long face, or what we Italians call, una faccia lunga.”
It happened that first Christmas day, said the pope, that as the donkey looked up he saw a horse. He thought
to himself, “What a beautiful animal the Lord made when He created the horse. Look at him. He’s gorgeous. He has a
magnificent head of hair, and he can run like the wind. Me — I am short and ugly. I don’t have his beautiful hair and I
cannot run very fast.”
With his long face, the donkey continued to glance around the stable. He noticed the camel. This time he said
to himself, “What a wonderful creature God made when he made the camel. Look at him. He can go for days —- as
the pope put it— giorni, giorni, days, days without any water. Me — I am always thirsty and can never seem not to
thirst.”
As the donkey continued looking around with the same long face, he suddenly looked up and saw a cow. He
said to himself, “What a marvelous creature God made when He made the cow. Look at her. She is friendly and gets
along with everyone. The cow not only gives milk to nourish her own but she nourishes others as well. Me — I cannot
nourish anyone. I am not easy to get along with. I am very stubborn.”
Continuing to focus on the scene around him, the donkey looked up and saw a baby in a manger. There was
something special about this baby — something in the look of the baby’s eyes captured the donkey’s attention. So he
walked up to the manger and sat down by the infant. It was a cold wintry night and the baby was cold.
Here the pope described a bit of the better part of our nature. No one likes to see children suffer. Even people
who don’t like children do not like to see them suffer. Then the pope said the donkey began breathing heavily on the
baby.
The next thing everyone heard was the pope panting loudly into the microphone. Remember that John XXII
was a very short and stocky man. So it sounded something like this: “Uhh huh . . . Uhh huh . . . Uhh huh.”
When he finished making those sounds, the pope told the crowd, “The baby reached up and patted the muzzle
of the donkey as if to say, ‘Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for keeping me warm on this cold wintry night.’” Now for
the first time in his life, the donkey was happy. He no longer felt sorry for himself. He had found meaning and purpose
in his life, and all his troubles went away.
Then the pope absolutely stunned the entire world saying, “For that’s the way it is with Almighty God. All He
wants is the warm breath of a living soul. You give Him that and he will take care of the rest. Let me repeat that. It is
so powerful and compelling that I want you to remember it for the rest of your life. ‘For that’s the way it is with Almighty
God. All He wants is the warm breath of a living soul. You give Him that and He will do the rest.’”
Overwhelmed at these words, the crowd remained utterly silent. Eventually, the pope broke the silence as he
spoke again. He said, “I must first give you the Italian: ‘Da un asino a tutti voi altri asini, Buona Natale’ which means,
‘From one donkey to all of you other donkeys, Merry Christmas!’”
My friends, we all have a chance to breath warmly upon each other. We do that simply when we love and care
for one another. And God will certainly do the rest.

Dear All of You,
In a few days it will be Christmas. Hopefully most of your
Christmas shopping, decorating and menu planning will be done.
Here at Outreach we have packed and delivered the Holiday
Food Baskets and distributed the Christmas presents. All this
activity is good. It helps those in need, it builds community, and we
have the satisfaction of doing what God asks of us.
Now I long for the time just to be reflective. I want to be still and feel the holiness of
what was, what is, and the mystery of what is to come.
One of my favorite paintings is one by Henry Ossawa Tanner. It is “The Annunciation”
and it hangs in the Philadelphia Museum. One summer I traveled there to see the original, but
to my dismay, I found out when I arrived that the picture was out on loan.
So I must be content with the print . . . which is still lovely. The colors are soft and
muted and the expression on young Mary’s face is one of wonderment. The angel is portrayed
as a light that falls across the bedcovers where Mary sits.
It is hard to take my eyes away from this picture. I listen to their conversation. I am
most impressed with Mary’s response when she was told that she was with child. Her words
must have been whispered, “May it be done to me according to your word.”
Surely not able to realize all the ramifications of her “yes,” she consented with
confidence. Like Mary, I too desire to have the confidence to say Yes, my Lord without
knowing all the answers.

Catholics have left the Church
in recent years. In the New
Evangelization, we are called to reach out to our
brothers and sisters and invite them back. If
you have a family member or friend who no
longer practices the Catholic faith, why not
gently invite them to come back home for
Christmas.
And then, invite them again.

The Good News at St. Mary . . .
St. Mary Parish is blessed with the 50 dedicated volunteers who staff our Thrift Shop on Main Street in
East Islip. These men and women live the Gospel message of “Clothing the Naked” on a daily basis in
offering new and gently used clothing at economical prices. The volunteers minister to the customers in a
gentle, non-threatening and Christian manner. They are directed to “love thy neighbor” even when it is
difficult. Most of the volunteers as you can see were able to attend their Christmas “Thank You” Party
hosted by Sister Camille and all had a wonderful time!

THANK YOU to all the parishioners of St. Mary who
very generously donated so many wonderful gifts and
their time to impact thousands of hurting children this
Christmas. Together we were able to pack over 1421
boxes filled with toys, schools supplies and basic
necessities for Operation Christmas Child. Our
packed boxes were filled with lots of great items,
especially love and prayers. They are now on their way
to children in need in over 105 countries around the
world. The children who receive the boxes will be filled
with joy knowing someone cares about them and best of
all, they will know the promise of God’s love, hope and
