Conference Overview
This conference is designed to address practical issues
and clinical challenges that oncology nurses face each day.
Hoag’s 10th Annual Oncology Nurses Conference “Embracing Excellence
in Oncology Nursing Practice” is designed for nurses dedicated to the field
of oncology who practice in settings across the continuum of care. During
this two day conference, attendees will benefit from an intimate learning
environment in which prominent faculty will present the latest in oncology
care and provide practical strategies and tools to improve nursing practice
and patient outcomes. In addition to offering strong clinical content from
leading experts, the conference will provide the necessary context to integrate
information into practice to improve the quality of life of the patient. Don’t miss
this opportunity to interact and network with other oncology colleagues while
earning continuing education credits.
CEU Accreditation & Credit Designation
This conference has been approved by the California Board of Registered
Nursing, with provider number 00146, for a total of seventeen (17.0) contact
hours (9.0 for Friday, 8.0 for Saturday), of continuing education credit for R.N.s.
Who Should Attend
This conference is intended for oncology and radiation oncology nurses.
Pharmacists as well as others with an interest in recent advances in the treatment
of solid tumors are welcome to attend. Students enrolled in a registered nursing
program who have interest in oncology are invited to attend in this program.

Educational Objectives
Describe three qualities of a good critical thinker
and how critical thinking is interwoven in the nursing
process and how to apply two critical thinking skills
to your daily patient care as it relates to treatment
induced rashes.
Identify new drugs that have been FDA approved for
cancer treatment in 2014 and recognize how new
drugs are given generic names. Identify how to gain
information about new drugs based on the generic
naming system.
Provide an overview of management strategies for
pancreatic and hepatobilliary surgical treatment.
Compare the functionality and indications of the
various vascular access devices. Explain the
evidence related to insertion and maintenance
practice recommendations for the prevention of
complications including CLABSIs and list three
vascular access device complications and explain
the interventions and troubleshooting of these
complications.
Provide an overview of basic principles and case
studies to aide in the learning process of palliative
care and survivorship.
Identify three common chemotherapy regimens
used concurrently with radiation treatment, as well
as explain three expected side effects of a pelvic
radiation treatment plan, and describe three nursing
interventions recommended for patients undergoing
head and neck radiation treatment.
Describe the sexual changes experienced after
treatment of the most common cancers. Highlight
interventions that may be helpful for these changes
and provide tools for the assessment of sexual health
in men and women with cancer.
Describe the current health care reform and how it
affects patients and health care providers.
Review treatment strategies and options for people
with metastatic breast cancer.
Recognize the significant heterogeneity of sarcoma
subtypes and have a basic understanding of a few
of the more common subtypes (e.g. liposarcoma).
Describe the basic treatment options available to
patients – surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy
and recognize when to refer patients to specialist
centers.
Articulate the evolving role of palliative care as well as
describe the benefits of early palliative care integration
in oncology and explain how earlier integration leads
to more efficient and cost-effective care.
Describe the different adverse effects of
immunotherapy, BRAF inhibitors, and MED inhibitors
and explain the management interventions for
adverse effects.
Define systemic inflammatory response syndrome
(SIRS), sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock.
Understand pathophysiology of sepsis and learn
how to use sepsis screening tool and describe the
Surviving Sepsis Campaign Treatment Bundle and
early goal directed therapy of sepsis. Describe
the current standard of care for diagnosis and
management of infection in patients with cancer.
Describe how oncologic therapies may be modified
in the presence of pre-existing cardiac comorbidities.
Define essential assessment skills needed for
management of patients with cardiac comorbidities
or cardiac toxicities of cancer treatment and outline
prevention and management strategies for patients
experiencing cancer therapy cardiac toxicity.
Describe indications for hematopoietic cell
transplantation, discuss the selection of the type of
transplant and describe two key principles of caring
for a patient with Graft Versus Host Disease.
Offer nurses takeaways of the cancer patient
experience to help better equip them to care for
their patients, deliver information to health care
professionals to change their perceptions of the
oncology patient experience: pre-treatment, during
treatment and post-treatment, and empower
oncology nurses with a deeper understanding of
oncology patients’ perspectives to help them gain
greater compassion for their patients.
