OCTOBER & december 2014 All the glitz, all the glamour of monaco... and what lavinia wanted most was to be with her girls and get a photo with seb 2014 WORLD MASTERS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 2 Editorial As I was away for 6 weeks turin in Italy, I was unable to do an October edition of Footprints. But genoa man must have holidays, even from retirement. A great pizza news on our Lavinia Petrie. She has won the IAAF Female Masters Athlete of the year for 2014. This is no surprise as vino what a champion she is. As I write, Lavinia is in Monaco for the Gala presentation with her two daughters June and Julie. I bet they had a great time siena up on stage with all those celebrities. Of corsica, this award is richly deserved. Don’t forget to renew your membership before 31/12/14 !! You cannoli get the discounted price of $35 if you do. If you let the date get pasta 31 December, you will have to pay an extra $10. So get domani to Astrid by then. You will find the 2015 Membership form on P.42 , or you can renew on-line via the VMA website. Dont be latte ! Enough of the Italian puns ? OK. We are presently reviewing our Run Safely Tonight campaign, and we are pretty pleased.the reaction from within the club and outside has been great. We have got quite a few new members and importantly, have got the VMA name out there, we have made everybody aware that new members are precious and we now know how to run a similar promotion next year. Please don’t read anything into the fact that I left the country before the campaign had ended. I did come back after all. Seriously, at this early stage I would like to run the same campaign next winter. It appears that we can do it just as well without the newspaper advertising. In the meantime a project for all Venues would be to maximise signage at their tracks. The Councils seem to be very difficult about this but we need to chip away. People need to know we are there. In this issue we have the paper entry form for AMA Championships to be held next Easter - April 3-6 - in Sydney. On-line bookings will open in December on a link off the NSW Masters website. The Championships have reverted to Easter after this years trial of another timeslot. I’ve told you I like having the Champs at Easter, but obviously there are others who don’t. If you like the status quo make sure you support this one. It will be a doozy ! I have also put in a flyer for our State Championships which are on March 14-15 at the newly renamed Tom Kelly Athletics Track in Doncaster. As was the case last year, entries are on-line only through the AV website. Once again, if registering on-line is a problem for you get someone at your Venue to help or contact Phil Urquhart 9572 0805 or me on 9870 8103. Phil and I live to serve you. Four months worth of NAGS in this one. So many that I couldn’t fit them on this page as usual. Could I write less in my editorial to make room ? Hello ??? I’ve been noticing the amount of work Paul Durrant puts into our club, and how much he gets out of it. His Venue is Knox, but he frequently attends four Venues - Doncaster, Knox, Croydon and East Burwood. He is up to his ears in their Facebook pages and as photography is an interest of his, he puts up a lot of great photos and movies. I am grateful that he took up RST so enthusiastically and shares all relevant information on Social Media. It would be good if we could clone him. Enthusiastic people are like gold to a club like ours. I saw Clyde at AV the day before his operation. He was busy flogging the old hip, getting every bit of use out of it that he could. CALL FOR OLD NATIONALS PHOTOS! The 2015 Nationals website is fast approaching going live, and one part will be a Nostalgia Photo section, a collection of old pics from past National Championships. If you have any really old ones, we’d love to use them. Please email your photos as jpeg files to : [email protected] You can also contact me if you have precious photos. I can scan them, take digital copies and get them back to you in pristine condition - Russ Ron Cracknell (or “Ruth”, as I like to call him), is not only a Croydon VMA member, who is passionate about running, but he is also passionate about downhill skiing. Since retiring in July 2012 and moving to live permanently in Mansfield, Ron has had more time for both pursuits. At the Australian Masters Skiing Championships held in August at Perisher Resort, Ron competed in the M65 Age group representing Mt Buller and achieved Gold in Super G, Gold in Giant Slalom and Bronze in Slalom. The Super G course was on a run called “Bloody Mary”. Giant Slalom and Slalom were both held on “Mother in Law” run. Both those names suggest one ought to exercise extreme care. The individual honors went to Peter Thorne (Knox), David McConnell (Doncaster) and Grant Murfett (Croydon). Here they are lined up in reverse order. The happy crew at Coburg Venue 5 Glen Eira Gossip Four Venues have their own Facebook pages. Of course we also have one for Vic Masters and Run Safely Tonight. This is a great way to • share photos or movies of the nights action. • Publish information like results, programs, or last minute changes. • And generally let people know what’s going on. I would recommend all of our Venues get a page, it’s free, easy to do and encourages involvement by all your people. Anyone can post their news or questions. “Glen Eira got this free publicity in the local Leader newspaper – if you’ve got something to say about happenings at your venue just contact one of the journalists at you local Leader – anything a bit unusual may get the journalist interested.” 6 Following on from the story in the last edition of Footprints, the Springvale venue held a birthday party on July 30 to celebrate Jim Sinclair turning 90 on August 1. With a number of visitors from other venues and the regular locals, we made sure Jim had a memorable night. I think the photo below suggests he enjoyed himself. And what is more we managed to keep him out of the kitchen for the night though he was back in charge the following week. As part of the celebration the venue conducted a 90 metre handicap series (what other distance could you use) over 3 heats in the preceding weeks with the final on the night of the party. Jim was the out marker, which is fair enough considering his age and he managed to get to the line before anyone could catch him thereby winning the trophy named in his honour. The wily old fox (as one of our members dubbed him a few years ago) had managed to get under the handicapper’s guard again, but no-one complained this time. Now that Jim has turned 90, our venue record keeper, Tony Johnson, has had to redo the record board as there was no column for M90. Showing some foresight, Tony has also included a M95 column. Something for Jim to look forward to. Since turning 90, Jim has run 19.8 sec for the 100 metres and 42.8 sec for the 200 metres. Pretty impressive times and comparable with the world records of 17.53 and 38.4 respectively. In other news, our major events for the year have been run and won. - the Ross Martin 3km was won by Lou Buccieri. Lou has been a regular placegetter in this event and the Eric Greaves 5km in recent years so he was very happy to finally crack it for a victory. - the Eric Greaves 5km was won by Howard Rees – his 4th victory in the event. It has been a few years since his last victory as the handicapper has been keeping him honest. - in the Bert Warburton 3km walk, Juan Perez was a popular winner. Juan took up walking 3 or 4 years ago when an injury curtailed his running. These days he combines both disciplines. When you read this it will be close to our Christmas break up. The question on everyone’s lips will be – who will win the Doran medal? 7 doncaster doings Doncaster Venue is holding regular Pentathlon competitions, the next one being December 15 and it’s starting to attract interest from athletes from other Venues. Otherwise there would have been 1 point in it. Helen Stanley, also of Knox, came in second from Bronwen Cardy, but Bronwen only competed in 3 events, still averaging over 93%. Not bad for someone struggling with injuries. In the Men’s section it ended up being a clear win to Ewen Wilson of Glen Eira which is his first win in this competition. Finishing behind Ewen were Greg Moore (Aberfeldie) and Ron Scholes (Collingwood). Great to see Glenn Sullivan of our newest Venue - Casey - coming in in 5th place. Once again the importance of completing every event is stressed, and the “sleeping giant” in the pack is obviously Bendigo with Mike Bieleny, Peter Cowell , Trevor Kelly and Charles Chambers all capable of mid 80%. Let’s hope they get a team up next year. Maybe they can talk Anne Buckley into running. I believe Charles is struggling with an injury at the moment. Hope he gets back to his Hobart form soon. Maybe Bendigo are the ones to rival Knox. Ashley Page 14 VMA Half Marathon Report 7/9/14 The Half Marathon Championship was held in conjunction with Athletics Victoria on the flat fast course near the Kevin Bartlett Reserve. Conditions were excellent and some great performances were recorded. Stephen Dineen M30 showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of the field in running 70.18 and the fast improving Antonio Giuliani M40 (Aberfeldie) was 2nd Master in 79.48. In the Women’s race Julie Norney W45 (Knox) was 1st in 85.48 and Sharon Pederson W40 (Geelong) second in 87.24 Highest Female AG% was Lavinia Petrie W70 (Knox) in 97.5%, closely followed by Bronwen Cardy W60 (Aberfeldie) 94.8% and Julie Norney W45 (Knox) 83.1% Barry Brooks M70 scored the Highest Male AG% with 84.7%. We had a total of 50 competitors, including those who are registered with other AV clubs. Melbourne Marathon Festival 2014 A result for VMA was compiled from the official Melbourne Marathon Results. Conditions on the day were uncomfortable and those who finished are to be commended. Steve Dineen M30 66.42 Steve Moneghetti M50 69.43 Wanna hear my Kevin Bartlett joke ? A few years ago they were having trouble growing grass in the middle of Kevin Bartlett Oval. No matter what they tried, nothing worked. Then one day the supervisor turned up and the whole oval was a brilliant green. “Wow, what did you do ? “, he asked the groundsman. “Well, I just let it grow really long on the wings, and raked it over the middle”. 15 AUSTRALIAN MASTERS ATHLETICS HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP (Incorporating the Tasmanian Masters Athletics Half Marathon Championship) Where : Start/finish at the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, Claremont, Tasmania. The result ? A terrific evening, a little warm, but well run and of a high standard. The main highlights were the superb running of Michel Bieleny and another World Record by Lavinia Petrie. On the day before she flies to Monaco to receive the award as the IAAF Best Masters Athlete for 2014, Lavinia underlined her entitlement to that award. She broke her own W70 3000m W.R. by 15 seconds in clocking 12.52. Thanks to Peter Barrett, Peter Hayes, Annette Major and of course Terry Hicks, who supplied some lovely “St. Annes“ wines for the outstanding performances. Unfortunately no wine for second placgetters in the walk. Tom Savage did a great job as commentator. Thanks Tom. Unfortunately, we only have space to show the Masters Results. Thanks to the under 30’s for competing. How do you count your laps? Do you keep a number in your head (you’ve got nothing else to do)? Do you count the first half lap, or do you wait until you’ve run one and a half when your brain ticks over to one? I have run the 10k Browne Shield event at Collingwood a few times with a lap scorer but have successfully counted to twenty-five and using the clock (about two minute laps plus a bit) to confirm. On one occasion at Collingwood I counted successfully to twenty when I decided to count the last five laps backwards. After two laps I didn’t know where I was and had to ask for reassurance from the lap scorer. Of course this level of communication on the run is fraught with problems considering fatigue and the lap scorer not having a clue what you’re yelling about. I need to mention that on completing lap thirteen of one of these runs I noticed my lap scorer (a prominent woman athlete) completely engrossed in conversation and not noticing me at all – she worked it out. To get to the point: On this particular night at Knox, in the 5k handicap I caught up to David who runs about the same as myself (a bit quicker actually) and after a while we had a discussion as to the number of remaining laps. He suggested three, I suggested four, and to complicate matters more he inferred a starting time of two minutes and twenty seconds thereabouts. The mathematics that processed this information coupled with the last view of the clock and considering a lap time of two minutes plus a bit and factoring in the first half lap, put my head in a spin and three laps remaining was agreed on. We were wrong; but we dead heated ahead of everyone else and were excitedly presented with a Masters Athletics glass each. I take the records home, put them on a spreadsheet and send them off to Judy Walters each month for Around the Grounds, but on the drive home I had worked out that we weren’t the winners, as did David, and we both felt quite unsettled. We conferred next week and returned our trophies on the pretext of old age, 134 years combined. The real question is who are the winners really, and what does the trophy mean to us? We get a real thrill when we win a glass – these trophies are a big part of what Masters athletics is all about. With the handicap system we have to admire that person in the club that works out the starting times; the need to set a time that challenges each runner, but also gives her or him the sense that a win is possible. Some of the glasses I have won over the years have survived and some have suffered in the dishwasher, but it is always great to see a glass presented and special to see someone get their first glass. Joan met and married husband Lindsay - himself a talented middle distance runner - in 1981, and in recent years lived in Berwick Brae Retirement Village, in Berwick. Her career in Veterans Athletics began purely by chance in 1976, when accompanying her talented daughter Dianne to the Annual Federation Games in Canberra when she made the spontaneous decision to venture from slow jogging to the more complicated technical event of Racewalking. The rest is history ! Through her natural ability, determination and insatiable competitive spirit, she soon began to make her presence felt in the W40 division at State and National level competitions. Under the initial guidance of renowned coaching duo Betty Newman and Tom Daintry, Joan then set her sights on the World stage, gaining Bronze medals at Hanover, Germany in 1979 and Christchurch, New Zealand in 1981. However, with the incentive of the VII World Veterans Games in Melbourne in 1987, Joan’s renowned competitive nature saw her continually set State and National records with monotonous ease, the result, at those Championships, she not only won both her 5000m (26:35.40) and 10000m (54.51) events, but set new World Records in the process. A perfect exponent of the demanding sport of racewalking, Joan was indeed a dedicated, disciplined athlete, whose strength, speed, willpower and level of achievement over a period of almost 15 years was only then terminated prematurely in 1991after being diagnosed with an incurable medical condition. Joan certainly made her mark in her specialist events at the highest level and will be sadly missed by family and athletics friends. The Museum showcases a multitude of sports and their history in this country and beyond. Many exhibitions are on long-term display but some, dealing with special sports or artifacts, are on show for only a limited time. “Gold for Australia” features stories of sporting medals won not only by champions but by also-rans as well, to indicate the wide variety of participation and performance in sport in this country. This exhibition has attracted much interest and is open until 31st March 2015. Near the entrance to this space, on the lower level of the Museum, is a series of panels displaying prominent sporting people, their story and their medals. The feature consists of Frank Beaurepaire, Olympic swimming medallist who was a leader in bringing the 1956 Olympics to Melbourne, Liz Ellis, Australian netball captain and legend, Debbie Flintoff-King, Olympic gold medal-winning athlete, Peter Antonie, champion rower and sculler, as well as John Dean, Victorian Masters stalwart and Manager at Aberfeldie venue and finisher of over 30 Melbourne Marathons. While the others were all champions in their field John represents those thousands of sports people who have made a dedicated and consistent contribution to their sport over so many years. As well as a photo of John at the finish of a Melbourne Marathon, the panel features the 27 medals he won in doing so. Some of his finishes happened before medals were awarded. This display is a great tribute to John Dean and his achievements which, at his level, are deemed to be comparable with those of acknowledged champions. It is also a great promoter of athletics for older people and what is possible to be achieved by them. All athletes and interested parties are urged to visit the Museum and this exhibition while it is on, as well as being able to see what the NSM has to offer in the wider sporting context. It may be of interest that among the rostered Guides at the Sports Museum are VMA members Judy Wines and Ashley Page who between them have many Melbourne Marathon finishes to their credit, Trevor Vincent, Commonwealth Games gold medal winner in the Steeplechase, and Peter Le Get, with three Marathon finishes. They would be pleased to see you there and point out some of the highlights of the Museum. 32 Alice Springs Running and Walking Festival 2014 article by Phil Urquhart It's not raining; there's almost no wind but it is zero degrees at a few minutes before 6:30 am in Alice Springs. Forty six marathon entrants have just been briefed by the race director and I am sure that no-one fully absorbed the unfamiliar street names and the initial twists and turns of the course and I am equally sure that they were mightily relieved to be told that cycling outriders would keep us on track. As I waited for the gun, my mind went back six months to a luncheon with former business colleagues where we each set ourselves a challenge to be reviewed in a year. Buoyed by the occasion, before my brain could intervene, I had mouthed the words "run a marathon in the outback". The gun, cheers from the assembled supporters and the forty six set off. We were clad in all manner of running gear from full length skins and several layers of tops, supplemented by beanies and gloves to the hardy (or foolish) souls in only shorts and singlets. The course initially took us along a loop beside the Todd River where yesterday we had enjoyed the annual "Henley on the Todd" regatta. We were soon at the first drink station, where we were greeted by black robed witches (Halloween in August?) and we remembered the instruction to rate each drink station who were competing for free dinners at Lasseter's. After reaching the Stuart Highway the new course traversed the Heavitree Gap, the only southerly access through the MacDonnell ranges into Alice Springs, carrying road, rail and the Todd River. As we settled into a steady pace, I remembered the varying degrees of enthusiasm my running friends had expressed for a road trip to the Red Centre, as supporters or participants, but alas, in the early morning darkness just six days ago it was Jim Clarke, myself and my partner Lorraine who set out. A shout of "turn left here" from our accompanying cyclist brought me back to the task at hand, as we left the aforementioned unfamiliar streets and joined the Ross Highway, now heading east, with the rising sun warming frozen hands and faces. We passed assorted caravan and camping parks, camel farms and other rural establishments, before we were greeted at the next drink station by volunteers dressed in 'onesies', who we naturally marked harshly, despite their enthusiasm. Eventually all signs of farming activity had been left behind and we were truly in the outback. The ridges of the East MacDonnell ranges loomed on our left, a bright contrast to the deep, blue sky and the dull green of the vegetation. The next of the gentle twists and turns of the highway revealed a drink station manned by another eager group who, unfortunately, were amusing themselves with 80s music, thus ensuring a low score (Flock of Seagulls were never a favourite of mine but the track was the appropriately named "I ran so far away"). By now I was lagging well behind the pack but Jim was waiting for me, as in the distance we observed the approaching race leaders on the way back. Emily Gap was passed, one of many breaks in the range carved long ago by the swift flowing rivers that existed in wetter times. Clearly marked kilometre indicators kept us focussed on the pace and regular drink stations ensured we were well hydrated. Not to be forgotten was the appearance of Buzz Lightyear at a later drink station, causing me to wonder whether we had somehow been beamed to another galaxy but the booming strains of Queen's "We Are the Champions" brought me back to earth and the necessity to keep moving. We had passed the half way point and were now in sight of the turnaround at 24.8 kilometres, as the Todd River loop is omitted on the return leg: only 17.4 kilometres to run. We were still running last so as we passed each drink station were able to happily inform the crew that they could now go home, however, many just moved to the next to cheer us on. As we approached Heavitree gap, signalling the nearing of the end, the race director drew up to check our progress and we quickly assured him we were determined to finish so he phoned ahead our expected finish time. At the last drink station Buzz Lightyear made a further appearance but refused to hand over his jet pack so we had to finish on foot under our own power. Which we did, in a slow 5 hours 15 minutes, but another marathon done: the 73rd for Jim and the ninth for me. With only an hour to the presentation, it was back to the Desert Palms for fifteen minutes walking in the pool, a hot shower and off to Lassetter's for the complementary presentation lunch, where we applauded the place-getters and accepted our finishers' medals. As the medal was handed to me those words uttered in haste at that earlier lunch "run a marathon in the outback" came back to me and, with great relief, I realised I had honoured that commitment. All in all, it was an excellently organised and well supported running festival with genuine outback running but without the sand and stones underfoot. The Alice Springs Running and Walking Festival is an event not to be missed for any distance runner who wants to experience an outback marathon. Whether it is 33 Alice Springs Running and Walking Festival 2014 - continued Phil Urquhart and Jim Clarke looking good at 30k combined with a lengthy road trip, or fly-in fly-out, there is plenty to do in the Red Centre. I highly recommend the event to all Masters and their families. It is hosted by the Alice Springs Running and Walking Club, whose president, John Bermingham, a Victorian and one time winner of the Victorian and Traralgon marathons, will be known to many masters. Race Director, Peter Eason, and the committee are planning to further improve the event and increase participation. As Peter pointed out, the marathon course has IAAF-AIMS certification and it is sanctioned by Athletics Northern Territory and is the NT marathon championship. As well as the marathon, the festival included a half marathon run and walk, and a 10 km run and walk, all carrying generous cash prizes. All distances are certified. I refuse to use the words "enjoyable" and "marathon" in the same sentence but this marathon was memorable and the pain quickly forgotten. My congratulations go to the other Victorian finishers, David Styles in 4 hours 22 minutes and David Ross in 3 hours 50 minutes. In horrendous conditions that saw the wheelchair race shortened by 2.8 miles and moved to a start at Brooklyn, all 10 runners obliterated the line of uncertainty, self-doubt and personal challenges to emerge as strong, self-confident and extremely proud marathon runners. The temperature was a mere 2C, a stark contrast to the searing heat our runners have been exposed to in recent weeks. They swapped the sunscreen for gloves, jumpers and beanies and pushed through a relentless head wind to conquer the grueling 42.195km. Race conditions somewhat reflected the squad’s first training run in Canberra, which some might say were perfectly adequate for the first day of winter – rain, wind, and freezing temperatures. But no amount of inclement weather was going to stop this squad. They demonstrate a perseverance, resilience, and inner self-belief that renders them incapable of defeat; regardless of the enormity of what lies ahead. Nathan Riley became the fastest Australian Aboriginal man to run the New York Marathon, finishing the race in 3:09:20. Despite having a boxing background, he only started running in May. Ruth Wallace has paved the way for the future of Australian Indigenous people of Adelaide, after she made history becoming Adelaide’s first New. York Marathon runner Allirra Braun’s incredible transformation didn’t stop at becoming 32kgs lighter; her renovated frame allowed her to lead the charge for the women, being the first 2014 woman over the line. Allirra also became the first Braun, Ludwig, Kungurrakan and Gurrindji woman to complete a marathon. Adrian Dodson-Shaw, after missing out on selection in 2012, was determined to give it one more shot before the cut-off age would prevent him from applying again. His self-belief paid off when he was named on the 2014 team and today’s marathon finish makes him the first Broome IMP representative to participate in the New York Marathon. Photo of Rob DeCastella and the group he took to the New York Marathon, together with Jane Sturzaker (in pink jacket second row standing next to Spartan gentleman) and other Australians competing over there. 39 Elsie Seriat and Harold Matthew, the Nadine Hunt and Charlie Maher (respectively) Award recipients, also raised the profile of Thursday Island, when they too became the Island’s first ever Australian Indigenous runners to take on the marathon. Not only did they achieve great success in the marathon, both runners have had a significant impact in their community by initiating fun runs, guest speaking at community events, establishing fitness camps for the community to attend – free of charge, and continually inspiring their community to adopt healthy and active lifestyles. These are just surface scratching examples of how incredible this group of Indigenous Australians are. They have an infectious love and deep appreciation of family and community. They are humble and resilient. And they are an absolute asset to our nation. Today didn’t mark the finish of a marathon; it symbolised new pathways and opportunities. Congratulations to the historic 2014 IMP squad. You are the future and you will continue to influence change within both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities nationwide. Today was just the beginning. Jane with her finishing medal. It is a fabulous medal, does not come up as well in the photo. She was thrilled to run this marathon in a time of 4 hours 30 after running 3 marathons in 3 days in the USA, the week prior! 40 2015 Australian Masters Athletics Championships Friday 03 – Monday 06 April The Crest Athletics Track, McClean St, Bass Hill (Bankstown) OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM (On-line entry is available from November 1st, 2014 at http://www.nswmastersathletics.org.au/) (ENTRIES CLOSE AT MIDNIGHT ON FRIDAY MARCH 7TH, 2015 – Late entries will NOT be accepted) Your Details To enter you must be a financial member of a registered Australian State or overseas Masters Association. This means that a medical certificate explaining the use by an athlete of a prohibited substance, even for sound medical reasons, will not avail in the event of an athlete testing positive to a prohibited substance. The only exception is if the athlete is in possession of a Therapeutic Use Certificate (“TUE”) issued to him/her either by the WMA Medical Officer or the assigned body provided for in IAAF Rule 34(5). For athletes wishing to apply for a TUE, written applications are to be submitted to the WMA Oceania regional Medical Officer DR ROGER PARRISH 17 Brentwood Avenue, Figtree Heights NSW 2525 Ph: 02-4275-1800 W 02 4228 6260 H or Mobile: 0418 470 244 E-mail: [email protected] All such applications are to be fully supported by medical documentation setting out the existing medical condition/s and the need for the use of the prohibited substance. The provisions of IAAF Rule 34(5) must be followed irrespective of to whomever the athlete submits the TUE application. It should be noted that a TUE approval only lasts for a period of 12 months. A longer time period (up to 4 years) can be applied for if the treatment is ongoing. Check also the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) website for the full list of prohibited substances. 45 Victorian Masters Athletics Inc.
