Cheers,
Wow, what a great summer! The Art Center
was bustling with activity from more than 200
creative Summer Art Campers, three great
exhibits and our fun Lobster Dinner. But hang
on; we have even more planned for the Fall
Term as we continue to celebrate our 60th
birthday!
Children love to draw, paint and sculpt! We
have classes to cover all interests beginning
in September, October, and November. There
are many options, i.e. daytime, evenings and
weekends, as well as Punch Cards for some courses and EZ payment
plans available for all courses. Be sure to check out our new courses
and favorite core classes on page 3. Instructors have new projects
planned for each class.
New courses for Elementary age children are both educational and
fun. Learn to Draw Well; Art Sampler-Architecture, Clay, Collage
and More; Let’s Explore Color and Design; Painting and Drawing; and Art and Culture are taught by Michele White. Creative ART
Journaling is led by Sue Marrazzo. Lori Cropper brings us Drawing
Sampler. We welcome Kathy Bucher to The Art Center’s team of
instructors with her Art of Tae Kwon Do.
Core classes with all new projects include Home School Art with
Tom Oakes, Mix-It-Up Painting with Sue Marrazzo and Ceramics and
Sculpture with Michele White.
Teens will find a variety of options: building Clay Castles and
Dragons; Exploring Color and Design; The Art of Building-Design
in Architecture and Sculpture; Art Sampler-Explore in 3-D; Collage
and Mixed Media; and Bronze Metal Clay Jewelry. Teens age 15
and up can enroll in most adult courses too. Look through the classes
listed on page 4, 5 and 6, and call the office with placement questions.
Workshops are a great way to try a new media, technique or just
have a bit of fun. The Fall Term offers more than 15 workshops that
are only 1 to 4 hours in length. Workshop details are listed on page
4. Full-Day and Multi-Day workshops are listed on pages 4 and 5, and
Photography workshops are located on page 6.

7100 Lightroom introduction and library module
This--the first of a series of Lightroom training sessions--will concentrate on
the Library module. This session will provide a firm grounding in Lightroom
so that you can feel comfortable going forward. We will address importing
images, backing them up, looking at collections (what are they and how
to use them), and the myriad methods of viewing your images in Lightroom. We will not spend much time in the develop module which is the
subject of a follow on class. If you have not used Lightroom or do not fully
understand the basics of it, this class is for you. You are welcome to bring a laptop to class with Lightroom
loaded if you so desire. We will not however, be able to spend one-on-one time with you regarding your
computer and its specific settings. For more information contact Dennis Baker at dennisbakerphoto@

7150 Lightroom Advanced Topics Post Processing - New!
New this semester is a Lightroom photography bundle. You can take all
four advanced Lightroom classes--for one low price, or sign up for individual classes. All classes are one hour in length and assume you have a
basic understanding of Lightroom (any version).
A: Develop Module In-Depth: Tues, Nov 11Dennis Baker
Going beyond the basics of Develop module we explore topics include
sharpening, HSL controls, noise reduction, soft proofing and other advanced topics.
B: Why use Plug-ins with Lightroom: Tues, Nov 18Dennis Baker
and Joe Farrell
This class is a discussion and demonstration of using plug-ins with
Lightroom. Plug-ins are software programs that are designed to work with
Lightroom to add a special “look” to your photographs, e.s. a digital border,
a painterly effect, a heavenly glow, or any other effect that helps your
photograph stand out from the crowd. We will be using plug-ins from NIK
Software, but the same concepts apply to plug-ins from other companies,
like OnOne Software and Topaz. The integration of Lightroom plug-ins
with Photoshop will be explored, but this is not a Photoshop class.
C: Processing Photos for Impact: Tues, Nov 25Dennis Baker
You’re sitting at your computer, staring at some photos you just took.
You’re ready to process the photos—using Lightroom or Picasa, or
whatever image editing program, but you’re not sure what to do to make
your photos look better. We will show you how to analyze your photographs—to determine what you
should do to them to make them better. Some of the factors that will be considered are: composition,
exposure, cropping, contrast, highlights, shadows, white balance, tones, color saturation, in- focus and
out-of-focus areas.
D: Print ModuleWed, Dec 3Joe Farrell
This class will guide you through the process of using Lightroom to print your photographs. Topics
include soft proofing, aspect ratio cropping, print driver settings, and Lightroom settings.

The instructor will explain and demonstrate how to use an electronic flash
to take better pictures. We will discuss: (1) the importance of observing the
quality, quantity, and direction of ambient light; (2) when to use flash and
when not to use flash; (3) what effect changing the camera’s shutter speed
has on the picture; (4) the effective use of modifiers--such as diffusers,
reflectors, and “gobo’s;” (5) the effective use of the “bounce flash” technique;
(6) how to use “flash exposure compensation” and colored gels to get the
light from your flash to blend with the ambient light; (7) reasons why you would want to move your flash
off the camera’s hot shoe and how to do it; and (8) what batteries to use in your flash. The techniques
presented will apply to cameras that have a built-in flash as well as cameras that use an accessory flash

This class is designed for people who want to take their photography to the next level.
It is geared for people who have cameras with controls for shutter speed, apertures,
and manual modes. We will explain and demonstrate how to: (1) show motion by panning, (2) photograph water so that it looks like it is flowing smoothly, (3) get the whole
scene sharp and in-focus, (4) capture action shots in poor light, and (5) take photos of
birds in flight. Capturing these types of photographs requires the right camera settings,
correct camera-handling techniques, and—perhaps most importantly—the ability to
visualize the image. This class will take place on two evenings (at The Art Center) and
one Saturday (field trip). Email Joe Farrell with any questions: [email protected]

7500 Digital Photography
An intense class combining basic camera set up, the mechanics of the camera and the lens, discussion on f-stops and shutter speeds and ISO, color
balance, basic flash, exposure, composition, cropping, vision and theory,
basic Photoshop and displaying your work. Section One deals with the technical aspects of photography; and Section Two deals with the creative side of
photography. A Fall fieldtrip to a local destination is planned so we can learn
in the field the concepts discussed in class. A portion of some of the later
classes will be spent on viewing your work and discussing how to improve your images. The class will
have sections of instruction that will be generic to all digital cameras.

be small juried shows consisting of 5 to 10 works of art from 3 to 7 selected artists. To have
your work considered for showing, please mail or email the following to The Art Center by
December 15, 2014:

All submitted work will be juried by the Exhibition Committee and the Executive Director.
Artists accepted for Select Expositions are required to become Art Center Members ($50
annually). The Art Center provides an opening reception for all shows, handles publicity,
printing costs, and exhibit installation. Artists are responsible for shipping or hand-delivering
their work to The Art Center and are responsible for providing their own insurance on exhibited works.
All work must be original - oil, acrylic, watermedia, drawings, hand pulled prints, pastels,

of five works available to exhibit.

must be wired and ready to hang.
Artists are responsible for delivery of artwork to The Art Center. If shipping is required, it will
be arranged and paid for by the artists. All shipped work 15" x 20" or larger must use plexiglass or other acrylic glazing rather than glass.
No entry received for exhibition shall be removed by the artist, for any reason, prior to the
end of the show. Jury decisions are final. Accepted entries may be reproduced in advertising
and/or the exhibition catalog. Any works deemed by Jury to have not been fairly represented
at entry, or not properly framed may be declined at our discretion.
Exhibited artwork must be for sale. A 33⅓% commission will be retained by The Art Center.
Groups are welcome to enter.
