Here the gravel sub-soil that gives elegance and quality to the Cabernets of the Haut Medoc is a little less evident; there are no Grand Cru châteaux here but bargains are to be had. Fourcas Hosten’s vineyard has limestone under the gravel; the wine is tough and austere in youth but develops well into a classic claret after a few years.
