Verse 1: Kellen Holter, treble solo
(please join in singing)
He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all,
and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall;
with the poor, the scorned, the lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy.
We, like Mary, rest confounded that a stable should display
heaven’s Word, the world’s creator, cradled there on Christmas Day,
yet this child, our Lord and brother, brought us love for one another.
For he is our life-long pattern; daily, when on earth he grew,
he was tempted, scorned, rejected, tears and smiles like us he knew.
Thus he feels for all our sadness, and he shares in all our gladness.
And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love;
for that child who seemed so helpless is our Lord in heaven above;
and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.
Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing round,
we shall see him; but in heaven, where his saints his throne surround:
Christ, revealed to faithful eye, set at God’s right hand on high.

THE BIDDING PRAYER
Celebrant: Beloved in Christ, this Christmas Eve let it be our duty
and delight to hear once more the message of the Angels,
to go to Bethlehem and see the Son of God lying in a
manger.
Let us hear and heed in Holy Scripture the story of God’s
loving purpose from the time of our rebellion against him
until the glorious redemption brought to us by his holy
Child Jesus, and let us make this place glad with our
carols of praise.
But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world, for
peace and justice on earth, for the unity and mission of
the Church for which he died, and especially for his
Church in our country and in this city.
And because he particularly loves them, let us remember
in his name those who are poor and helpless, those who
are cold, hungry, or oppressed, those who are sick and
those who mourn, those who are lonely and unloved, the
aged and little children, as well as all those who do not
know the love of God.
Finally, let us remember before God his pure and lowly
Mother, and that whole multitude which no one can
number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and
with whom, in Jesus, we are one for evermore.
And now, to sum up all these petitions, let us pray in the
words which Christ himself has taught us, saying:
THE LORD’S PRAYER
(said together)
Prayer Book p364
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

THE PROPHET FORETELLS THE COMING OF THE SAVIOR
FIRST LESSON
Isaiah 9: 2, 6–7
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived
in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. For a child has been
born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is
named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with
justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The
zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
In a Lessons & Carols
service, readings are not
followed by a
congregational response.
CAROL
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Elizabeth Poston
The Schola Cantorum
The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit and always green: the
trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree. His beauty
doth all things excel: by faith I know, but ne’er can tell, the glory which I
now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have
sought, and pleasure dearly I have bought: I missed of all; but now I see ‘tis
found in Christ the apple tree. I’m weary with my former toil, here I will sit
and rest awhile: under the shadow I will be of Jesus Christ the apple tree.
This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive; which
makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree. (Text: from
Divine Hymns or Spiritual Songs, New Hampshire, 1784; music: Elizabeth Poston,
English, 1905–1987.)

THE PEACE THAT CHRIST WILL BRING IS FORESHOWN
SECOND LESSON
Isaiah 11: 1–4
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out
of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and
the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not
judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with
righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of
the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the
breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
CAROL
In dulci jubilo
arr. R. L. Pearsall
The Schola Cantorum
In dulci jubilo, Let us our homage shew: Our heart's joy reclineth, In
praesepio; And like a bright star shineth, Matris in gremio. Alpha es et O! O
Jesu parvule, I yearn for thee alway! Hear me, I beseech Thee, O puer
optime; My praying let it reach Thee, O Princeps gloriae. Trahe me post te. O
patris caritas! O Nati lenitas! Deeply were we stained, Per nostra crimina:
But Thou hast for us gained, Coelorum gaudia. O that we were there! Ubi
sunt gaudia, If that they be not there? There are Angels singing, Nova
cantica; And there the bells are ringing, In Regis curia. O that we were
there! (Old German carol, arr. R. L. Pearsall, 1995–1856.)

THE ANGEL GABRIEL SALUTES THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
THIRD LESSON
Luke 1: 26–35, 38
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee
called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the
house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said,
“Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed
by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel
said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And
now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him
Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the
Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over
the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary
said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to
her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be
called Son of God." Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it
be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Gabriel’s Message
arr. David Willcocks
The Schola Cantorum
The Angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as
flame; “All hail!” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favoured
lady.” Gloria! For known a blessed Mother thou shalt be, all generations
laud and honour thee, thy son shall be Immanuel, by seers foretold;
Refrain. Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it
pleaseth God,” she said, “My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name”:
Refrain. Of her, Immanuel, the Christ was born in Bethlehem, all on a
Christmas morn, and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say:
Refrain. (Text: S. Baring-Gould, 1834–1924; music: Basque carol arr. David
Willcocks.)

ST. LUKE TELLS OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS
FOURTH LESSON
Luke 2: 1–20
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world
should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while
Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered.
Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of
David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and
family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was
engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time
came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and
wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was
no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the
fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord
stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they
were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am
bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day
in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign
for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a
manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on
earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them
and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to
Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made
known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the
child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had
been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what
the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered
them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for
all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day

The Schola Cantorum
Tomorrow shall be my dancing day; I would my true love did so chance to
see the legend of my play, to call my true love to my dance. Refrain: Sing,
oh! my love, this have I done for my true love. Then was I born of a virgin
pure, of her I took fleshly substance. Thus was I knit to man’s nature to call
my true love to my dance. Refrain. In a manger laid, and wrapped I was, so
very poor, this was my chance, between an ox and a silly poor ass, to call

Hymnal 78
Forest Green
“O little town of Bethlehem”
O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;
yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;
the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above,
while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth!
and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all on earth.
How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven.
No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin,
where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.
Where children pure and happy pray to the blessed Child,
Where misery cries out to thee, Son of the mother mild;
Where charity stands watching and faith holds wide the door,
The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, and Christmas comes once
more.

The Crown of Roses
P. I. Tchaikovsky
The Canterbury Choir and Canterbury Apprentices
When Jesus Christ was yet a child he had a garden small and wild, wherein
he cherished roses fair, and wove them into garlands there. Now once, as
summertime drew night, there came a troop of children by, and seeing
roses on the tree, with shouts they plucked them merrily. “Do you bind
roses in your hair?” they cried, in scorn, to Jesus there. The boy said
humbly: “Take, I pray, all but the naked thorns away.” Then of the thorns
they made a crown and with rough fingers pressed it down, till on his
forehead fair and young red drops of blood like roses sprung. (Text: A.N.

1840–1893.)

Music before the Service
See how the shepherds, summoned to his cradle,
leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger,

who would not love thee, loving us so dearly?
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born on Christmas morning;

Incense (hypoallergenic charcoal) is used at the 11 p.m.

since antiquity. The smoke of burning incense is

Christ, revealed to faithful eye, set at God’s right hand on high.

Hymnal 81
Es ist ein Ros
Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung.
Of Jesse’s lineage coming as seers of old have sung.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I
believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by
the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He
descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended
into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will
come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life

A Babe Is Born
William Mathias
The St. Philip’s Singers
A babe is born all of a may, to bring salvation unto us. To him we sing both
night and day. Veni creator Spiritus. At Bethlehem, that blessed place, the
child of bliss now born he was; and him to serve God give us grace, O lux
beata Trinitas. There came three kings out of the East, to worship the King
that is so free, with gold and myrrh and frankincense, a solis ortus cardine.
A fair song that night sung they in worship of that child: Gloria tibi
Domine. O lux beata Trinitas, a solis ortus cardine, floria tibi Domine. Noel!
The Offertory is an
opportunity to share in doing
God’s work in the world by
giving back to God a portion
of what we have been given.
We are grateful for your
generosity.

At St. Philip’s, all are
welcome to receive the
sacrament of Holy
Communion. You may
extend your hands to
receive the bread and then
drink from the chalice.
Alternatively, you may
receive the consecrated
bread and then dip it into
the chalice to partake of
both elements.
Infant holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall; oxen lowing, little
knowing Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing,
nowells ringing, tidings bringing, Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Flocks were
sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new; saw the glory, heard
the story, tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises
voicing, greet the morrow, Christ the Babe was born for you! (Text and
music: Polish carol, tr. Edith M. Reed, arr. David Willcocks.)
9 P.M.: CONGREGATIONAL CAROL (please remain seated)
“The first Nowell”
Hymnal 109
The First Nowell
If you do not wish to
receive Communion you
are invited to come to the
altar rail for a blessing.
You may indicate this by
crossing your arms across
your chest.
The first Nowell the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields as they lay, keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.
They look-ed up and saw a star
shining in the east beyond them far,
and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.
Then let us all with one accord
sing praises to our heavenly Lord;
that hath made heaven and earth of nought,
and with his blood our life hath bought.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.

In dulci jubilo
arr. R. L. Pearsall
The Canterbury Choir and Canterbury Apprentices
R. L. Pearsall, 1795–1856.)
11 P.M.: COMMUNION HYMN (please join in singing while seated)
“It came upon the midnight clear”
Hymnal 90
Noel
It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s allgracious King.”
The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings
unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world;
above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o’er its Babel-sounds the blessed angels sing.
Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long;
beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled two thousand years
of wrong;
and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring;
O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing!

9:00 & 11:00 p.m.
For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold,
when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,
and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing.
POST-COMMUNION CAROL (sung together)
“Silent night, holy night”

Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn king!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!
Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies;
with th’angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem!
Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn king!

late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th’incarnate Deity.
Pleased as man with us to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn king!
Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die,
born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in
a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. You have multiplied the
nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the
harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken
as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the
garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has
been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he
is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for
the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with
justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The
zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to
renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that
are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and
the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is
who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify
for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

THE GOSPEL
LUKE 2: 1–20
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world
should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while
Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered.
Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of
David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family
of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and
who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to
deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in
bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them
in the inn.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over
their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory
of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to
them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for
all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the
Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in
bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the
highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to
one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken
place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and
found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this,
they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard
it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these
words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and
praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

THE CHRISTMAS BLESSING
May Almighty God, who sent the Son to take our nature upon him,
bless you in this holy season, scatter the darkness of sin, and brighten
your heart with the light of holiness. Amen.
May God, who sent angels to proclaim the glad news of the Savior’s
birth, fill you with joy, and make you heralds of the Gospel. Amen.
May God, who in the Word made flesh joined heaven to earth and
earth to heaven, give you peace and favor. Amen.
And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen.

Music Groups for Children and Youth
Children and youth are at the heart of St. Philip’s music ministry. The St. Nicholas
Children’s Choir and the Schola Cantorum rehearse weekly, and participate in regular
Sunday liturgies. Participants gain valuable musical and spiritual formation through
singing and fellowship. They are exposed to some of the great music of the past and
present, and participate in the training scheme of the Royal School of Church Music.
Through the generosity of Friends of Music,
choristers attend annual choir camps with
other singers from around the country. In the
summer of 2016, the St. Nicholas Choir is
invited to be choir-in-residence at Worcester
Cathedral, in England. This experience will be
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing, at a
great Cathedral, the music that is a part of our
Episcopal heritage.
After School Music and
Homework Program
The St. Philip’s After School Music and
Homework Program operates every
Monday through Thursday afternoon
during the school term for children
mostly in grades 3–5. Music lessons,
choir, supervised homework help and
mentoring are provided by our staff and volunteers. Our program is free to those
children and families from two neighboring schools that are in economically
disadvantaged environments. We have 50 volunteers to help with this program.

“Comfy Space” Worship
To join the “comfy team”

On the second Sunday of each month, children and
families participate in a very special worship service at
9:15 in the Children’s Chapel. “Comfy Space” is a
delightful worship experience for those who wiggle in
church and those who worship with them. Sermon
activities, prayer, Gospel readings, and songs are
designed to hold the interest of children while allowing
family and friends to experience the presence of God in
a relaxed setting.
Music Groups for Adults
St. Philip’s adult choirs welcome all who
can sing and fulfill attendance
requirements. There are two adult choirs,
the St. Philip’s Singers and an auditioned
chamber choir, the Canterbury Choir. They
lead worship on Sunday mornings
September through May and on special
feast days. The mission of St. Philip’s
Friends of Music is to enrich the musical
experience of the parish and community through events such as concerts, outreach,
education, scholarships, commissions, and support of special musical events.

Adult Formation Opportunities
Adult Formation forums meet not only
on Sunday mornings but also on
weekdays, evenings during the week, and
weekends. Topics range from spirituality
and information about the Episcopal
church, to current issues of concern, to
exercise and health and wellness courses,
to intellectual challenges such as science
and theology. All our formation programs
are designed to inspire personal and
community growth in three areas: mission, spiritual, and theological formation. Our
programs strive to strengthen your call to ministry in the church and mission in the world.
Still More Opportunities for Adults
There are myriad other ways adults can become
involved in the life of St. Philip’s Parish, through
such avenues as music, service opportunities,
outreach, pastoral care, and social activities. We
invite you to explore all that is happening at St.
Philip’s and discover where God is next calling
you. Visit the Newcomer Information Station in
the Perry Garden on any Sunday morning or
check our Web site: www.stphilipstucson.org.
