Dec. - Fremont City Schools

December, 2014
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We hope your family is having a good Thanksgiving break, and we look forward to seeing the students back in school, ready to learn. As
we enter the holiday season, we want to reinforce the importance of school attendance. We know that just a few missed days here and
there, even if they are excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school.
The 2nd quarter interim reports will be distributed to Ross students on Friday, December 5, 2014. Please contact the main office if you still
do not have access to your student’s grades on Progressbook. We will be more than willing to assist you. If you wish to discuss your
child’s progress, please feel free to contact your student’s teacher or grade level guidance counselor.
First semester exams will be taking place December 17, 18, and 19, 2014. Attached to this newsletter is the Ross exam schedule and
permission slip for students to leave the building if they are not scheduled for an exam. Please note, students who are currently earning a
D or F in a class will not be permitted to leave early and will be required to stay during the make-up times to complete missing
assignments. For those students required to stay the entire school day, a letter will be mailed to the parent/guardian notifying them of the
student’s current Ds and Fs.
Lastly, I invite all of you to attend our upcoming Ross Choir concert on December 4th, Ross Orchestra concert on December 9th, and Ross
Select Vocal and Show Choir concert on December 11th, all at 7:00 pm in the Little Theater. Happy Holidays!

ACE Mentoring Program (Assisting Children to Excel)
We are proud of our 15 ACE students who achieved first quarter honor roll status. Also congratulations to
Jiayan (Ying) Tong and Little Giants’ football team captain, Jeffrey Barnett. Ying was crowned
Homecoming Queen and Jeffrey helped lead the team to the district playoffs.
Throughout the school year, ACE students participate in career-based workshops during lunch periods.
Workshop activities center on academic success and leadership skills. December Lunch Bunch will feature
study skills and test taking tips to help prepare for first semester final exams that are scheduled for December
17–19. There will be no mentoring during this week. Winter break begins Monday, December 22 - January 6,
2015.
We applaud our dedicated community mentors and appreciate their commitment to help our students succeed
and establish career goals. Funding for ACE is provided by the United Way of Sandusky County. There is no
cost for students to participate, but they must complete an application and parent permission is required.
The ACE newsletter is posted on the Fremont City Schools district website and program activities are listed.
For more information you may contact: Mrs. Violetta Rhea, ACE Mentoring Coordinator at (419)332-4453

On December 5th the sophomores will have the opportunity to visit Vanguard Tech Center. Each student will be following a
schedule to visit the labs they have chosen to explore. This is a great opportunity for sophomores to begin the career exploration
process and to see what Vanguard Tech Center has to offer them. The students have many labs from which to choose for this
visit. Vanguard Tech Center has 18 programs, some of which prepare students to go directly into the workforce while others
give them a college experience while still in high school. If you have any questions about Vanguard Tech Center, feel free to
contact the sophomore counselor, Ms. Blanton, at 419-334-5479 or [email protected].

ENTEROVIRUS D68: WHAT P ARENTS SHOULD KNOW
Symptoms:
EV-D68 can cause mild to severe respiratory illness and may sound like a child has asthma. Mild
symptoms may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and body and muscle aches. Severe
symptoms may include wheezing and difficulty breathing.
How Does it Spread:
Since EV-D68 causes respiratory illness, the virus can be found in an infected person’s respiratory
secretions, such as saliva, nasal mucus or sputum. EV-D68 likely spreads from person to person
when an infected person coughs, sneezes or touches a surface that is then touched by others.
Who is at Risk?
In general, infants, children, and teenagers are most likely to get infected with enteroviruses and
become ill. That's because they do not yet have immunity (protection) from previous exposures to
these viruses. We believe this is also true for EV-D68. Adults can get infected with enteroviruses,
but they are more likely to have no symptoms or mild symptoms. Children with asthma may have
a higher risk for severe respiratory illness caused by EV-D68 infection.
How can I Protect Myself?
There are no vaccines for EV-D68. However, you can help prevent yourself from getting and
spreading EV-D68 and other respiratory illnesses by following these steps:
STUDENT WELLNESS GOALS:
1. Reduce student alcohol and drug
use at Ross High School as evidenced by pre and post survey
data and discipline referrals.
2. Increase nutrition/fitness
knowledge as evidenced by pre
and post survey data.
3. Decrease student bullying/
harassment and insubordination
incidents at all grade levels as
measured by pre and post survey
data and discipline referrals.
4. Improve district/building climate
as measured by pre and post “My
Voice” survey data.
• Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or shirt sleeve, not your hands.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
• Stay home when you are sick.

HEY ROSS STUDENTS - GET MOVING!
Winter weather doesn’t have to mean sitting inside and hanging out by yourself.
Get active and enjoy the fresh, cold air of winter! Winter weather brings a great
opportunity to enjoy a snowball fight, sledding, or a brisk walk on the walking trail.
Sledding at local hang outs will be sure to bring fun when you grab a friend and hit
the hill! Hospital Hill, Walsh Park or St. Joseph’s Cemetery are all great places to
sled. A great way to add an extra boost of exercise to your sledding is to challenge
your sledding partners a race back up to the top!
Another great way to stay active during the
second semester is to add an activity course to
your schedule.
Ross High School offers
semester long courses that will provide you with
physical activity. Check with the guidance
office to see if you can fit Swim, Physical
Education, Personal Fitness or Strength and
Conditioning in your schedule.
The Wellness Center will feature monthly wellness facts, tips and articles that correspond to the district’s four
student wellness goals. We hope our Fremont families find the wellness information beneficial.
T HE FCS W ELLNESS CENTER
KNOW ! THE F ACTS, RESPECT THE MEDS
Did you KNOW! teen medicine abuse is on the rise? According to the Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS), there was a 33%
increase in American teens abusing prescription drugs over a five-year period. Prescription meds now rank in the top three most popular
drugs of choice among youth, just after marijuana and alcohol. Statistics reveal that ONE in FOUR teens have misused or abused
prescription drugs.
What exactly is prescription drug abuse? Anytime a person takes a medication prescribed for someone else, or takes his/her own
prescription for reasons not intended by his/her physician – like getting high.
What drugs are teens abusing? The most common drugs of abuse are OPIOIDS (painkillers), DEPRESSANTS (to relieve anxiety or
induce sleep) and STIMULANTS (especially those used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - ADHD).
Where are teens getting such drugs? The majority of youth obtain prescription meds from the home medicine cabinets of family and
friends - many times without them even knowing.
Why are young people abusing prescription drugs? Teens abuse prescription drugs for a number of reasons. They may use not only
to get high, but to stay alert, go to sleep, lose weight, stop pain or as a study aid. Many teens and adults falsely believe prescription drugs
are safer than illegal drugs; and many say they’d be in less trouble if caught using a prescription drug vs. an illicit “street” drug – both of
which contribute to teen use.
Why should you be concerned? Regardless of why young people choose to abuse prescription drugs, their developing bodies and
minds are negatively impacted (in addition to the legal, social, educational and personal ramifications it can cause). Depending on the
drug and what it is mixed with, physical side-effects may include anything from chest pains and decreased breathing to seizures and loss
of consciousness – which can ultimately lead to death. Prescription drugs also change a person’s brain chemistry, potentially leading to
addiction and interfering with the brain’s neurotransmitters which can impact everything from basic survival functions, like breathing, to
more complex functions, like the ability to think, solve problems and make decisions.
Respect the meds! Prescription medications have many beneficial effects. When used under proper medical supervision, they can help
us live longer, healthier lives. But these same medications have the potential to produce dangerous and even deadly side-effects,
especially when misused or abused. Because of this potential for harm, prescription medications should be used precisely as prescribed,
and only by the person for which they are intended.
