Fall timber sales are released
for Forest County
The crew at Pack 'Em Inn held an Ugly Sweater
Contest on December 13th. The customers brought in
non-perishable food items, and for each item they
received a ticket for a chance to win a flat-screen
television. Virgie Hanson was the lucky winner.
Pictured above are the food items, with Dawn
Volz, on the left, and Linda Duff. Dawn said the food drive
was a success, and they plan on having the event again.

Childhood Memories of Christmas
Submitted by Barb (Bintz) Read
When I was a child Christmas was such a magical
time, starting with the fact that a new, fancy dress was
always in order. For my parents, finding the money to pay
for it wasn't always easy I am sure -- because we were an
ordinary mid-west farming family -- but I remember getting
a new outfit every year.
The first time I would get to wear my new outfit
would be on Christmas Eve. After weeks of Saturday
morning practice with my fellow Sunday school chums,
Christmas Eve was "Show Time" -- perhaps saying,
"Worship Time" would be more appropriate.
Like all the members of my family, I would take a
bath and get "all dolled up" as my dad used to say. Putting
on our Sunday best on a cold, dark winter night was
always exciting for me -- in my case my new dress -- along
with new, clean white tights and black, patent-leather
shoes that were so shiny nearby objects would reflect in
them.
My mom would braid my hair and make sure that
my brother and I were bundled up to stay warm on what
would always be a typical freezing night in the depth of
winter. I hated having to shove my feet into my bulky fur
lined winter boots and zip them up over my beautiful,
gleaming shoes for the five mile drive into town. The boots
always made my feet feel sweaty and the snug feel always
tended to wrinkle my tights.
I was always a little anxious when we arrived at
our place of worship. My brother Bruce and I were blessed
to be third generation members of the Bintz family, who
attended Trintiy Evangelical Lutheran Church, in the town
of Wabeno, Wisconsin.
Parents and guardians would help their smaller
children remove and hang up coats, mittens, hats and
then the adults would file into the church, leaving their
offspring and/or charges in the supervision of nervous

Musical performance at Essenhaus
in Wabeno for scholarship fund
Forest County ATV Association is pleased to
announce that at its November, 2014 meeting, a motion
was passed to donate $500.00 to the Forest County Mitten
Tree program. Along with other organizations and private
citizens this program purchased toys for needy children in
Forest County.
Friday & Saturday, December 19-20, Joshua
Jameson, Vocalist and Mary Ellen Keller, Pianist, will be
presenting, “Songs Under the Mistletoe.” They have been
called the dynamic duo of music of the Northwoods and
are back by popular demand. The evening will be a mix of
traditional, contemporary and classical selections of the
holiday season. The duo mixes humor with background
information on the selections for the audience.
Donations from each night’s performance will go
to the Erna Rousseau Scholarship Fund for Forest County
students pursuing a degree in the arts or education. Pizza
Buffet at 5, show at 7. Space is limited please call (715)

The Forest County Forestry Department met last night,
December 16, in the board room of the Forest County
Courthouse. The Forestry Department has been extremely busy
lately, but were able to get four timber sales out of a possible
seven this fall. The other three sales will have to wait till spring and
hopefully the timber prices will not drop. The bids totaled
264,935.00.
The committee also discussed the previous meeting of
the sub committee and WORVPI. WORVPI is working on a master
plan to get changes made to the 15 year comprehensive land use
plan. The department has not set a date for the next sub
committee meeting, but it should be in January.
There will be a new cabin at the Forest County Veteran’s
Memorial Park. The committee will be working on getting bids to
print. The next forestry meeting will be January 12 at 4:00 P.M.
Mccaslin Lions host annual
Childrens Christmas Party
Recently the McCaslin Lions Club hosted their
annual Christmas party for 65 area children ten years old
and under. Prizes were awarded to the Bingo winners
played before lunch was served. Face painting was very
popular with the youngsters. After lunch, Santa arrived via
a Townsend fire truck with lights a flashing and sirens
blazing.
After Santa’s arrival, each child got to sit on
Santa’s lap to tell him their wishes for a Christmas present.
Finishing the event, 20 trikes and bikes were given away
to lucky children by lottery. A great time was had by all.

"More to Choose From" Trade-ins Welcome
Sunday school teachers who were then deemed "in charge."
Standing and waiting in the less than warm front hall, in a chronologically formed
line -- oldest to youngest --always made me fearful. But I am sure I wasn't the only little kid
with butterflies in their stomach -- most everyone, no doubt, was afraid of forgetting their
lines when it would come time to say their part. This was such a big event!
At the sound the loud ringing church bell and the resounding music coming from
the organ in the balcony we would march single file, through the double swinging doors
into the main body of the church. The oldest leading the way down the aisle and sitting
down in the same organized order --the oldest to the youngest -- on the folding chairs lined
up in rows, in front of and facing the altar. When it was time for a group of Sunday school
students to perform, they would stand and turn around to face the congregation.
Singing old familiar hymns like "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night" was a year
to year tradition along with each grade taking turns reciting parts of the Christmas Story
from the Holy Bible. Some of the more talented children actually got solo parts! Hearing
the wonder of it all always gave me goose-bumps and made my knees knock together.
The church always seemed to sparkle, even though the stain glass windows that
were usually adorned with sunlight on Sunday mornings would be as dark as the night
outside. It was this darkness that seemed to make the candles and the lights all the more
bright and exciting.
The sight of the twenty foot high tree -- decorated "to the nines" with the beautiful
star on top -- that stood in the front of the church every year always warmed my heart. Just
looking at the bright large colored lights on the tree was exciting enough but when I
slightly crossed my eyes the tree lights would blur and come alive. But most exciting was
the anticipation of getting my warm little hands on one of the gifts from under the tree. My
eagerness made it so difficult to sit still and wait until the program was over.
All the gifts under the tree -- one for each child -- were exactly the same.
Surprisingly they were just a small simple, brown paper lunch bag with the top folded over.
There were no fancy ribbons or decorations attached to the top. Inside each bag was one
orange, one apple, some square pieces of hard candy covered with dark chocolate, some
peanuts in the shell and a piece or two of ribbon candy (flat, hard, striped candy in a curvy
shape). In addition, there would be one homemade popcorn ball wrapped in some exotic
colored cellophane paper like purple or orange. This, to me, was always the highlight of
what was found in the bag. The exquisite popcorn balls were made in the church basement
kitchen by the members of the Ladies Aid days prior to the service.
By today's standards, it was a very simple gift. But to a small child -- in the
darkness, late at night, in the middle of a very long, cold winter in northern Wisconsin -- it
was a treasure that brought pure joy.
The sound of the lovely carols, the feel of my soft new dress, the sight of the color
of the cellophane paper and the bright, glowing, colored lights, the smell of the orange and
the taste of the candy were all -- in a word -- euphoric!
Oh, the treasured memories of so long ago. Seeing that mountain of brown bags
under the tree and knowing I would receive one always brought feelings of comfort,
contentment and cheer -- as traditions usually do.
Looking back, it is amazing that the treasured Sunday school gift that was so
plain and unpretentious could bring such happiness then and such happy memories now.
But then again it is just like God's gift to us of the Christ child, a gift so small, so
plain, and so unadorned -- was and is still -- simply and truly our greatest gift and treasure!

Volunteers Carol Dreifuerst, Betty Eckert and Margaret
Baker sort through donations of clothing and other cold-weather
items for the next Warm for Winter give-away on Saturday, Dec. 27,
10 a.m., at Friendly Village.
In case Santa forgot that cozy sweater or extra
blanket on your wish list, the Warm for Winter clothing giveaway is set for Saturday, December 27, 10 a.m. until noon,
at Friendly Village, 900 Boyce Drive in Rhinelander.
Organizers Jan Leschke and Gale Willcox and a

"We are in our sixth year of this project," said Jan, "It's been
gratifying to see how the community comes together to

No income limits or verification is needed;
everyone is welcome to take what they need to keep off the
chill. The event will continue on the last Saturday of each
month through February.

Dear Editor,
Now's the time of year when we all start receiving
those beautiful Christmas cards. Once the season has
passed, it's a shame to just throw them away. I have a
suggestion for repurposing those cards. St. Jude's Ranch
for Children accepts the fronts of Christmas, as well as, all
occasion greeting cards that they use to make new cards
and sell them as a fundraiser.
Their address is: 100 St Jude's Street, Boulder City,
NV 89005.
I would like to encourage your readers to send the
fronts of their greeting cards to this worthwhile
project.
Thanks,
Ann J Koziol,

all their wishes in a row, to help the county purchase "their"
land. Read it for yourself, if you're looking for a little levity.
I attended the meeting last Tuesday between the
Forest County Forestry Department Sub Committee and
W.O.R.V.P.I. Gee, who do you think was there to represent
W.O.R.V.P.I., but Melinda Otto, who holds the titles of
W.O.R.V.P.I.’s Secretary/Treasurer, Crandon City Council
Member, Forest County Board Member, and lastly Executive
Director of the Forest County’s Chamber of Commerce! The
second representative was former Forest County board
member Jack Matuszewski. Apparently, W.O.R.V.P.I. had
asked for revisions to Forest County's 15 year
Comprehensive Land Use Plan, so that an off - road vehicle
park could be operated on county owned lands. The meeting
didn’t get much accomplished. It seems that W.O.R.V.P.I. has
been asked and so far unable to provide information from
their wish list, including a master plan, a definition of a "MRA
park", a definition of a rutting standard for prevention of
environmental damage, and a definition of the business
relationship between the county and W.O.R.V.P.I.. I also heard
comments about: Who will build and own the buildings in the
proposed park? Who will provide the required liability
insurance? Who is going to be responsible for building new
roads and trails in the park? Who is going to pay for road and
trail maintenance? All these questions, came from county
board members, and I heard no answers, from W.O.R.V.P.I.
representatives, just lots of wishes.
Every single meeting that is being held between
W.O.R.V.P.I. and our county board cost us, the taxpayers,
money. How? Just one item is, every meeting I have attended
has had Forest County's Corporation Council Paul Payant in
attendance. I’m not sure why it's necessary for Corporation
Council to be in attendance at each of these meetings, and I
don’t know what he is billing the County for travel time, or
time spent in each of these meetings, but I’m guessing its
easily in the thousands of dollars. All, to beat a dead horse.
It's really time to stop beating this "Dead Horse."
Lets again ask our Forest County Board Members to
place a referendum question on the spring ballot. I believe
the question could be as simple as "Should Forest County
Government be involved in development of a publicly owned
Motorized Recreation Area or Off - Road Vehicle Park" with a
Yes or No answer. Let's give the Forest County Taxpayer a say
in this issue!
I personally have been told by county board
members, who last voted to keep this issue off the ballot last
fall, that they would now vote to place the issue on a
referendum ballot for the people of Forest County to decide.
But it's going to be up to you to contact your county board
member, and ask for this to happen. I believe it has to be
soon, if it's going to be in time for the Spring Elections.
Which brings me to the idiom "If wishes were
horses, beggars would ride". What is W.O.R.V.P.I. looking for?
You the County Taxpayer, to provide them with a 10,000 acre
playground to operate their off - road vehicles, that now have
no where else to go. All their bringing to the table, in my
opinion, is lots of wishes, and no capital. So, I’m changing it
to "If wishes were an off - road vehicle park, W.O.R.V.P.I. would
ride!
As always, these are my opinions, and my opinions
only, but at least, I’ll sign my correct name.

" Beating a Dead Horse" and
"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride"
Tell you what, I’ll start with the first one, and finish
with the last.
So, what do you think of when you hear this old
idiom? Where did the phrase come from? What does it
actually mean, and just how does it relate to W.O.R.V.P.I.
{Wisconsin Off - Road Vehicle Park, Inc.}?
The internet is such a neat place. Google the
idiom "beating a dead horse", and you will come up with
the following definition, " trying to convince people to do or
feel something without any hope of succeeding".
Sounds just like what W.O.R.V.P.I. is wishing to do
with their idea of a 10,000 acre off - road park and
campground, to be owned by you, the Forest County
Taxpayer. Yes, they want you to borrow millions of dollars,
to buy 10,000 acres of now private forest land, build a
luxury campground, develop an off - road vehicle park, and
then, turn it all over to W.O.R.V.P.I. to operate, because after
all, it was their idea in the first place!
So what exactly does W.O.R.V.P.I. bring to the
table, besides lots of wishes and the idea of a county
owned off - road vehicle park? Not much by my standards.
I went again last week, to W.O.R.V.P.I’s website, to check in
with what is happening at W.O.R.V.P.I. it seems that John
Schnorr, president of W.O.R.V.P.I., is now writing a weekly
newsletter to the faithful, detailing what a great job they are
doing at helping the county develop "their" idea. According
to the website, they have been busy little beavers, getting

Jamison Fricke,
Wabeno Student of the Week:
December 15th
Jamison Fricke, son of Joe and Val Fricke of
Lakewood, was chosen as student of the week for the
week of December 15th. After graduation, Jamison is
interested in moving to West Virginia by his sister, getting a
job and eventually enlisting in the military. He looks up to
those in the military, especially his brother.
Last year Jamison started Operation Bold Move
at Wabeno Jr/Sr High School. He created posters in his
computer applications class and hung them around the
school to promote “help someone everyday." Jamison
saw an opportunity to make our school and community a
better place. He wrote “Be Amazing to Each Other! If
someone you know needs help and you don't have the
qualifications to do so let someone else know, maybe they
can help." The mission duration stated, "Your ENTIRE life"
and the mission reasoning read, "It is our duty as the
human species to restore faith in humanity and not be
afraid to show we care about another."
Jamison has made a huge impact on many
people with Operation Bold Move. Many people have
credited Operation Bold Move as the reason they went out
of their way to help someone whether it was at school or
somewhere like the grocery store. Thank you, Jamison,
for striving to fill our community with helping hands. You
have certainly made a positive impact on our school and
community.
By Cory Campbell
I don’t usually submit an article right after our
year-end Christmas Letter, but felt we should let everyone
know how great our Christmas Bazaar held at the Nashville
Town Hall turned out. We had many vendors with a great
variety of gifts, crafts, and goodies for sale. Our A.R.F.
tables were loaded with both gifts and Christmas décor.
The weather was definitely in our favor, and we
enjoyed customers from opening till closing, with the
animals in need coming out the winners when the money
was counted at the end of the day.
All the vendors put together three baskets of
great gifts. Names could be placed in the drawing with a
donation to A.R.F. At the end of the regular Market Day on
Wednesday, Dec. 10, winners of those baskets were
drawn, and the happy three were Pat Gallagher, Glenda
Conn, and Charlie Polar. Donations from this fund raiser
certainly helped, and we at A.R.F. appreciate the vendors
“adopting” our organization.
A.R.F. Board member Judy Zimmermann held
another sale for the animals at her winter home in
Milwaukee, which netted us another thousand dollars to
add to our winter working revenue. We try never to miss
an opportunity for work to make a few more bucks to keep
things afloat. Judy also collects items there to bring to our
big spring sale here each year.
We have a family of a mama cat and her five
youngsters in foster care that will be ready for permanent
homes within the next couple of months. As soon as the
kittens are vetted, we’ll be advertising them for adoption.
This feline family was found a few months ago in a church
window well right before one of the big torrential rains we
experienced . Since the kittens were just newborns, they
would certainly have perished, had they not been
discovered by some caring individuals and brought to
safety with us. A.R.F. knows no “township” boundaries. A
needy animal knows not what municipality he has wound
up in –all he knows is that he needs help, and A.R.F. will be
there to provide it, as long as we have the revenue to do so.
We are thankful for any kindness to animals, whether it be
a rescue as the one above, financial assistance, adopting
from shelters or rescues, or taking in a stray on your own,
and we know God will bless you for your good works.

Food Safe Holiday Parties
It's that time of year again! It's time to loosen up our
belts and throw dietary caution to the wind! But let us not
throw food safety to the wind.
'Tis the season for holiday parties, potlucks and
smorgasbords. And 'tis the season for time and
temperature abuse, cross-contamination and food-borne
illness! As we gather together for holiday cheer, we put our
food and one another at risk for food-borne illness. Follow
these easy tips to ensure your holiday foods are safe for
everyone to enjoy!
Certainly one of the most important things you can
do to keep your holiday food safe is to ensure it is cooked to
a proper internal temperature. Use a thermometer to check
temps before serving.
Make sure you wash your hands, food prep area,
equipment and utensils frequently.
Potentially hazardous foods -- cooked meats,
gravies, cooked starches and cooked fruits and vegetables
are all at risk of being time and temperature abused.
Potentially hazardous foods that sit out without a heat or
cooling source need to be eaten within a couple hours or
they need to be tossed.
Use crock pots, electric skillets or chafing dishes
to keep food hot, or keep it in the oven until you need it.
Keep cold food on ice.
And watch the clock.
Don't let food sit on the table for hours on end.
To avoid dirty hands in the food, keep your serving
tables well stocked with utensils like spoons and tongs.
Have fun but be safe.
Did you know?
Any dessert made with dairy (eggnog,
cheesecake, cream pies, real whipped topping, etc.) need
to remain cold at 41 degrees Fahrenheit.
Turkeys can be kept safe indefinitely if kept frozen
in the freezer, but use within a year for the best quality.
The amount of moisture, protein and starch a food
has determines how much bacteria will like it.
Never eat raw cookie dough or lick the beaters
after mixing a batter made with raw eggs. Raw eggs can
contain salmonella and make you very ill.

If we could have one
Christmas wish, one dream
that would come true,
We would pray to God, with
all our hearts just to see
and speak with you.
A thousand words won't
bring you back. We know
because we've tried.
And neither will a
million tears. We know
because we've cried.
You've left behind our broken
hearts and precious
memories too,
but we never wanted
memories Dad. We only
wanted you.
We love and miss you every day!

Anticipation’s best.
The sugar-shivers of the Eve
Were wealthiest.
The pine-rise and the shining eyes,
The bounces and applause
Mixed in mosaic with gifts and cake,

Wrappings silver, golden, red,
And ginger-cooky things.

The door to the Forest County Clerk’s Office
By Boyd Monte
If you have had to visit the Forest County Courthouse in
the month of December, I hope that you have been able to take a
look at all of the doors to the offices. Each office has decorated
their door in a friendly competition for a pizza party.
Members of the Forest County Chamber came to judge
the art. They ruled that these are the top five winners: Forest
County Clerk's Office took first place, Child Support came in
second, Clerk of Court took third, the District Attorney's office
came in fourth and the Zoning Office placed fifth.
The Forest County Clerk's Office have generously given
the pizza party to the second place finisher, the Child Support
Office, although they are keeping the bragging rights!
