I Nancy Schuhart am a candidate for the Wabeno
Town Board Supervisor. My 10+ years of experience on
the town board and dedication to the Town of Wabeno will
be very helpful in once again creating a positive
environment to live in. While on the town board I applied
for and received grant money for the Town of Wabeno,
including two LRIP projects (local road improvement
program) and a large housing grant. If elected I will
continue to seek any grant money available.
I have attended all the town board meetings since
being off the town board, so I am well aware of the
decisions that have been made good or bad.
I am a lifelong resident, property owner and taxpayer. I
believe in accountability no matter what the
consequences are.
You know the saying, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I am a lifetime resident of Nashville. My wife and I
raised our family here. I graduated from Crandon High
School, and then attended Antigo Vocational and
graduated from the machine tool operation class. I
worked as a machinist most of my working years, with the
last 20 plus in the defense industry.
I have some experience serving on committees. I
was on the A.S.C.S. agriculture committee that dealt with
farm programs. I was on the union committee as a chief
steward. That job dealt with contract problems and
contract negotiations.
I am seeking this office to help maintain the best
interests of the township.

Friends Plan Art and Music Fest
in Wabeno-Volunteers needed
WABENO— The Friends of Wabeno and AVEC
(Arts Vitally Enrich CommUNITY) with help from Forest
County Economic Development Partnership are planning
a two-day Art and Music Fest in Wabeno for August 1-2.
Eighteen musicians and the same number of artists will
provide a variety of musical genres, art demonstrations
and workshops in and around the Band Shell, Logging
Museum and American Legion Park. Volunteers will be
needed to help organize performance areas, food and
beverage booths, art vendor areas and much more.
Come to the Friends meeting on Wednesday,
March 25, at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall to learn more about the
Fest. Other topics will be possible grocery store grant
application and trail construction in Firefighters Grounds
this summer. All are welcome! Lend your time and talents
to our community.

The caller identifies themselves as taking a medical
research survey. They ask about a doctor’s name that they
cannot pronounce and care you received from him or her.
It appears they may start this conversation in this manner.
They may ask many personal questions before asking for
personal information. DO NOT GIVE ANY. BE VERY
CAREFUL.
I am looking into this and will update you with any
further information.
PLEASE DO NOT continue a conversation with
anyone that you do not know regarding your health, home
or general life. It is unfortunate there are people out there
who are scammers but the more we know, the more we
can protect ourselves.
BE SAFE and keep sharing information that will
protect all of us!

Earth Day 2015
Commentary by Joe Hovel
The Northwoods of Wisconsin is defined by its
most abundant and rewarding resource, a resource that
impacts the region’s economy, its residents, its visitors,
and its image. This resource is the forestland that makes
up the majority of the Northwoods.
These forests are plentiful with opportunities and
natural wealth. As a dominant fixture of the Northwoods
economy, the forestlands are the sustainable foundation
of forest products industries in the region. Many
Northwoods residents have work closely tied to the forest,
in silviculture, logging operations, on sawmill crews, or
wood processing. Timber or finished products are
shipped out of the area, drawing revenue from outside of
the region. The public forests, for the most part managed
for multiple uses, are vital to the timber industry and tend
to attract much higher stumpage prices than do private
sales. This is a benefit to all by relieving state-wide tax
burden.
Our public forests are a source of recreation for
people enjoying a variety of activities, and feature
abundant trails and terrain, acreage accessible for
The Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pickerel had a
big turnout. Yes, the winds were a little brisk and the temperature
could have been a little warmer, but weather never stops this
event. The parade has had a great turnout in cold and in
snowstorms. It is the area's first fling after the cold and short days
of winter, and people love it.
In the picture above, an energetic dancer also played
the violin/electric guitar with an archer's bow. "What do you do
with a drunken sailor?" was a good tune, and it almost sounded
like a recording! The float was the Norwegian/Irish Folk Band,
and while we thought that kilts were worn by Scotsmen, we also
know this is America, and we do tend to blend cultures. Besides,
everybody is an Irishman in this event.

They will work for syrup and a little beer
On a recent visit to the
Davison Timber Ranch, near Lake
Lucerne, I observed a group of
people who will do anything for a
little maple syrup. The clever Pete
Davison had this bunch of sugar
craving people wading the snow to
empty the bags of sap into
buckets, then transfer the sap to a
sleigh that was pushed by hand to
the waiting sap barrels. Hard work
to satisfy a sweet tooth!
Oh sure, there was beer,
sausage and cheese, plenty of
cakes and other treats, but the
whole plan is to cook the sap into
maple syrup that Pete will
disseminate to the workers. A lot of
work!
It is that time of year.
Maple trees are being tapped all
across the Northwoods, and steam
is rising from countless cookers,
both amateur and commercial.
The Pearson-Pickerel Lions had a very nice float.
The Pickerel-Pearson Business Association reminded us of
all the year-round activities available in the area. The winners of
the parade were: 1st Sing Into Spring, 2nd Pickerel/Pearson
Lions Club and a tie for 3rd, St. Johns Lutheran and Dvorak's
Docks. Congratulations to the winners!

I live at 5815 State Highway 52, in the Township of
Freedom, only a mile down the road from where I grew up.
I am the second of four generations that have or are
attending the Wabeno School, graduating in 1971. My
father, myself, and my two children all graduated from
Wabeno High, and I currently have two grandchildren in
Wabeno Elementary.
I have been in banking since I graduated, and I
have 43 years at the bank in Wabeno, where I am currently
the Bank Secrecy Officer and Wabeno Branch Supervisor.
I have college credits in many aspects of banking and a
degree in principles of banking.
My community involvement consists of currently
being on the school board, secretary/treasurer of the
Wabeno Area Chamber of Commerce, member of Wabeno
Lions Club and the Roller Booster Club.
The most pressing need for the district is, of
course, money. Madison forgets about the rural schools
up North. We as a board have the difficult task of making
the best choices possible for our students education while
maintaining a reasonable budget. With all of my banking
experience and knowledge in accounting, budgeting,
investments, etc., I feel that I am a great asset to the board,
and I hope to continue to receive your support in the
upcoming election.

Hello to all readers, many of you may already
know me since I have been in Laona all of my life. I was
truly born within 100 yard of where I live now, how many
people can say that in these times?
Many people in our area look down on our Town
and feel that we have nothing to offer, myself, I am proud to
have gone off for higher education and returned here to
raise my family. Our people are our greatest asset, that is
why we remain here!
It has been my pleasure to serve on the Laona
Town Board since 2003 and the last six years as Town
Chairman. Since being on the Town board, I have worked
with other board members to keep the Town Tax levy flat
while providing opportunity for many changes. While
many people do not realize it, the Town portion of the tax
levy has not gone up more than the 2% state limit annually
in more than 12 years, we have maintained and improved
services and we have seen major changes in what the
Town offers.
Changes that I have witnessed in the last 12 years
include the following:
1.
Finalization and establishment of the Nicolet
State Trail that brings tourism dollars directly through the
heart of Laona. Although most do not recognize it, this
trail was promoted by the Town board through
negotiations with the prior owner. This negotiation also
provided the Town with the land on which the recycling
center is now located.
2.
Completion of the Laona Comprehensive Land
Use Plan and negotiation with County Zoning to maintain
the development rights of Laona Taxpayers.
3.
Building of Centennial Park and Playground at no
costs to the taxpayers. This park was built on land donated
by the Baltus family and improvements were through
donations from the Connor Foundation and the Laona
VFW.
4.
Establishment of the Town shooting range on
Klasna Lane- with assistance from local residents and
local contractors in construction and maintenance.
5.
Building of the downtown ball park. This project
was a cooperative project completed by the Laona
Quarterback Club and the Town itself. The Town provided
the land and the costs of the engineered plan and the
Quarterback Club provided funding for construction.
Additional funding was provided by the Forest County
Potawatomi Community and Plum Creek with donations of
labor for construction of the dug-outs from local
contractors. The area now provides a legal sized ballpark
for high school athletics, softball leagues, and also a site
for our annual Fourth of July fireworks, which have
become a premier show in the Forest County area.

Color Your World : Family Story Time
Join us for a Family Story Time program on
Monday, March 23rd from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. The Library will
provide coloring opportunities for all ages, the Forest
County Health Department will provide colorful fruit and
veggie taste-testing and the Forest County Ties that Bind
Us will provide a colorful obstacle course in the lower level.
No registration is required for this drop-in event.
Women’s Self Defense Class
In honor of National Women’s History Month the
Crandon Public Library is offering a Women's Self Defense
Class on Thursday, March 26th beginning 7:00 p.m. The
class will be taught by Ron Strong, a certified master
instructor and fourth degree black belt.
In lieu of a registration fee for this event, the
Crandon Public Library is asking each participant to bring
an item to donate to the Tri-County Council on Domestic
Violence and Sexual Assault. Currently the Tri-County
Council is in need of personal care items for both women
and children, as well as gas cards, diapers (larger sizes)
and paperback books. The items may be dropped off at the
library at the time of registration or the night of the class.
Registration for this event is required and we ask
that you please register by noon on March 25th. You may
register by phone (478-3784) or by stopping at the front
desk.
Crafts 101 Program
Crandon’s Stitch’n Sisters Needlework Group will be
offering a beginners' class in the lower level of the Library
on Tuesday, March 24th from 9 am-Noon. Participants can
learn how to: knit, quilt, embroider, basket weave, and
English paper piece. There will also be a sample table of
crafts available for viewing. No registration is required for
this free event.

Nicolet College’s two-week Graphic
Novel class to run June 1 - 12
Three college credits in two weeks?
It’s possible at Nicolet College for students who
enroll in the Graphic Novel class which will meet weekdays
June 1 to 12.
Laid out in a style similar to a comic book, graphic
novels cover all literary genres found in traditional fiction
and non-fiction books. Topics range from memoirs and
historical events to love stories, fantasy, and religion, said
Shane Teter, Nicolet College English instructor.
Teter first taught the Graphic Novel class in 2008,
making Nicolet one of the first colleges in the state to teach
the new genre. “Now, just about every college offers a
comics and graphic novel class,” he said.
The class will meet from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Because of the extended time in class each day, sessions
will be broken up into a lecture and discussion portion,
small-group work, and student presentations.
“One of the things that make graphic novels and
comics work so well in an accelerated class is you can
accomplish a full read in a relatively short period of time,”
Teter explained. “It makes the reading load much more
manageable and workable.”
Taking the class outside of the normal academic
year many reduce the number of credits students need to
take in future semesters or catch up on credits, if
necessary. The credits transfer to most other colleges,
including every campus in the University of Wisconsin
System. This makes it perfect for students who attend other
colleges and are in northern Wisconsin for the summer.

hunting, and a variety of scenery offering pleasurable sightseeing. With this draw, public
lands attract dollars to the Northwoods when vacationers are lured by the charm of the
Northwoods. They come to enjoy the natural character of the Northwoods, not the
development that has overtaken the forests and lakes in recent decades. While either
publicly or privately owned lands can demonstrate Northwoods appeal, public lands are
unique in offering these benefits to everyone, while not acting as a tax burden on any
individuals.
These commonly owned lands also insure the preservation of our Northwoods
atmosphere. While many private lands have been divided into smaller tracts in a trend of
forest fragmentation, public lands are assured to remain viable forest and continue
contributing to our Northwoods economy and way of life. In an environmental context,
public lands are much less vulnerable to fragmentation and deforestation than are private
lands, and are invaluable habitats for the abundant wildlife of the Northwoods. Maintaining
low population densities preserves lakes and streams and surface and ground water
quality. As large, contiguous tracts of land, these forests create expanses of undeveloped
ecosystems that preserve connectivity and well-functioning environments.
The number of threats to the environment and our Northwoods grows each year.
At the same time, many of our elected officials have attempted to erode the many benefits
of the public lands, by hampering the State’s ability to purchase land, and even
encouraging the sale of public lands as we have recently seen in Vilas County. They use
the false argument that these resources are a burden to own. Maybe they are unaware of
the revenue these forests generate or perhaps these ill-guided folks do not recognize the
fact that a forest does not demand services, and requires neither black-top roads nor new
schools. Or possibly they are beholden to an interest other than the common good.
The budget currently under consideration in the state legislature would eliminate
any Stewardship program funding for state and county land purchases and would even
halt state funding for Forest Legacy easements. These easements are a unique publicprivate partnership, maintaining a privately owned timber base but preventing
fragmentation or development and allowing for public recreation. I consider these lands
‘public’ in my comments here. I have always thought this partnership would be a
compromise that all could agree to, protecting both our timber industry and our way of life.
Today there are timely opportunities to continue to conserve much of the vast
timber investment lands, which for decades were owned by industry. Land values are
greatly reduced from only a few years ago, and these investment owner funds turn over
quickly. To protect some of these lands requires diligence and available funding, such as
that from the Stewardship program. The second-home economy in the area has proven a
bust, but the timber industry is thriving and offers hope for expansion of economic activity
and a long-term sustainable future in our region. Failure to protect our working forestlands
will be catastrophic to the future of the industry as well as tourism.
Forestlands have demonstrated their remarkable value to our state and all of its
citizens. An endorsement of public lands is an endorsement of our Northwoods as a legacy
for future generations. Because of the great sacrifices of our predecessors, these publicly
owned lands and the riches they hold belong to us all. For this we can be very proud. Will
future generations judge our stewardship of this resource with pride?

Nicolet College’s April Poetry Project
In honor of April as National Poetry Month,
Nicolet College is holding its Fifth Annual Poetry Project to
celebrate.
Community members, along with Nicolet
students and staff, are encouraged to submit their original
poems to be posted on the college’s online Poetry Project
blog during the month of April.
The details and guidelines of the Poetry Project
can be found online at nicoletpoetry.blogspot.com.
Throughout the month Kilgus will post poems on
a daily basis. Aspiring poets interested in submitting
works can email them to Kilgus at
[email protected].
Anyone submitting a poem is asked to include
their name, the title of the poem, and a comment about the
poem or themselves. Poems can also be submitted
anonymously, if the writer desires.
At the end of the month instructors in the
college’s University Transfer Liberal Arts program will
select the best poem from a community member and a
student.
The community member with the best poem will
be honored with the Ron Parkinson Poetry Matters award
and will receive two tickets to a Nicolet Players theater
production.
The student with the best poem will receive a
$100 cash prize and a $50 gift certificate from Book World.
Both winners will be honored at the Student
Awards Ceremony in May and will be invited to read their
winning poems.

Pre-College Academy for
9th, 10th graders coming to Nicolet
Students who will be high school freshmen or
sophomores next year will have the opportunity to explore
careers and learn new skills in environmental science,
engineering, and health care over five Saturdays this spring
at Nicolet College.
The Pre-College Academy will focus on the
science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) aspects
of each career path.
“Careers in STEM are some of the fastest growing
and highest paying career sectors in the state and nation,”
said Kelly Anunson, Nicolet College dual credit coordinator.
“By attending the academy, students will have a much better
understanding of these high-demand fields and what it
takes to enter them.”
Cost is $487, which covers all five Saturdays. A
grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
will cover the tuition for any student who is eligible for free or
reduced lunch.
Each session will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
and lunch will be provided each day. Nicolet will provide bus
transportation to and from meeting points in area
communities.
The scheduled Saturdays and topics are as follow:
April 11 – Health Sciences
April 18 – Manufacturing
April 25 – Design Process
May 2 – Environmental Science
May 9 – Digital Video Editing
Along with learning about careers, students will
also enjoy developing a wide variety of valuable skills.
“Everything will be designed around hands-on
activities that are fun for students,” Anunson added.
“Activities will focus on problem-solving and analytical
thinking – key skills for success in high school, college, and
the workplace.”

have witnessed loss of some businesses since 2003, we
have also witnessed the building of T-Bob’s,the Family
Dollar store, Northern Motor Sports, expansion of the
Flooring mills, Collins Service and building of a small
sawmill in Laona. New this year will be opening of an ATV
accessible campground. Major credit for these
developments go to the owners and other businesses that
assisted, however the Town provided assistance where it
could. The Town also provided assistance in obtaining
Federal grant funding which improved the rail line for the
Lumberjack Special which provides many youth with jobs
in the summer.

Upgrading town equipment- through the last 12
years, the Town has replaced two dump trucks, an
endloader, two police vehicles and obtained equipment for
snow-removal on sidewalks.

Upgrading of fire department equipment and
stabilization of fire department staffing. In 2003 the Town
bought the first new fire truck since 1964. This was the
beginning of equipment replacement that was required to
insure that younger members would join the fire
department. In 2008 an additional fire truck was purchased
and an additional replacement was purchased in January
2015. In 2013, personal protective equipment was
replaced through a grant from the Forest County
Potawatomi Community. This truck and equipment
upgrade plan has resulted in new fire department
members, in fact the Laona Fire Department was named
volunteer fire department of the year in 2014.

Cooperative trail establishment with local
snowmobile clubs- the Town assisted with movement of
trails off roadways to allow trails to be maintained longer
into the spring.

Opening of town roadways to ATV traffic through
cooperation with the Forest County ATV Association.

Installation of playground equipment at Silver
Lake Beach with a generous donation of funding by the
Forest County Potawatomi Community.
12.
Improved relationships with, upgrading and
expansion of the Laona Rescue Unit including replacement
of 2 squads.
13.
Upgrading of curbside garbage pick-up to include
recyclables.
I do not take credit for these changes, but I do
commend the taxpayers of Laona for their support in
making these changes a reality. While many taxpayers
question their tax rates, I always ask, what do I get for my
tax money? I believe what we have accomplished with our
limited resources in the last 12 years is amazing.
Town government provides service including
road maintenance, road replacement, snow plowing, fire
protection, police protection, rescue and ambulance
services, park and cemetery maintenance, public library
services and business development assistance. Through
the years the Town Board has worked to hold the line on
taxes while making changes and improvements where we
could, I believe that is all that can be asked for?
I commend the many groups that work hard to
provide services which we could not otherwise afford,
these include groups such as the Laona Rescue Unit, the
Laona Volunteer Fire Department, the 100 Mile Snow
Safari, the Lumberjack Memorial Trails, the Forest County
ATV Association, the Forest County Chamber of
Commerce and the Forest County Economic Development
Partnership.
Appreciation also needs to go out to groups such
as the Laona VFW, VFW Ladies Auxillary, the Laona Lions
Club, the Laona Quarterback Club, Laona Alumni Club,
and the PTA which complete fund raising events and
support many efforts and events to improve our
community. The people and businesses that support these
efforts also deserve recognition, without financial support
and donations these efforts could not succeed!
I appreciate all the readers for their time, the
taxpayers of Laona, and I would appreciate your support at
the polls to continue our improvements into the future. In
any event, I hope all voting aged people make sure to get
out and vote on April 7th, many of our citizens, past and
present, sacrificed to provide you that right!

The Lowdown on Fructose
What is fructose? Fructose is a small sugar
molecule that's naturally found in honey, fruit and sweet
vegetables, such as beets and corn. It also can be paired
with glucose and processed into high-fructose corn syrup
(HFC S), a sugar additive popular with food
manufacturers.
High-fructose corn syrup is a corn-based
sweetener that's widely used in processed foods,
especially soft drinks. It's been the subject of lively
debates among nutrition pundits. Some believe it
contributes to the obesity epidemic, while others think it's
just another sugar -- no different than what's in your sugar
bowl.
Some studies suggest excessive consumption
of added sugars is linked to insulin resistance, high
triglycerides, heart disease and liver damage, but more
research is needed.
With no consensus on either side of the
debate, nutrition experts do agree on one thing: Most
North Americans consume too many added sugars and
not enough fruit. Per person, consumption of fructose
added as HFCS to foods has risen five-fold during the past
100 years.
Is sugar in fruit safe to eat? Yes. In fact,
guidelines suggest eating at least 2 cups of fruit every day
(more or less depending on your individual needs). At this
intake level, your fructose consumption will be relatively
low -- and it's naturally occurring, not added, sugar. Plus,
the fiber, vitamins and antioxidants in fruit are part of a
healthy diet. Learn more at ChooseMyPlate.gov.
Consider this: An average 16-ounce soft drink
has 53 grams of sugar, while a pear or an apple has just 12
grams.
Bottom line: If you consume sugar, it's better to
get it from fruit than from processed foods.

NAMI Northern Lakes Annual
Member Meeting
The NAMI Annual Member Meeing will be on
Tuesday, March 24th, 7:00 p.m., First United Methodist
Church, Arbutus Street, Rhinelander.
Hope William of Ministry Healthcare, will be
speaking on nutrition and general well-being and the
impact on mental health recovery.
At the Annual Member Meeting there will be a
vote for the Board of Directors, and we will also celebrating
the 4th anniversary of NAMI Northern Lakes.
Car Seat Safety
The Forest County Health Department has a
certified child passenger safety technician who is
available to help parents and caregivers choose the right
car seat for their child. She will make sure the seat is
installed properly and will provide education on the laws
that apply to child safety seats.
A limited supply of car seats are available to lowincome Forest County families through a grant from
Wisconsin Information Network for Safety. For more

HCE activity enjoyed by members
On March 17, 2015, Daniel C. Kallgren, Ph.D.,
Associate Professor of History at UW Marinette, (pictured)
presented a program “It Wasn’t all Ozzie and Harriett” at
Wells Fargo Bank in Gillett, which was extremely
interesting. Mr. Kallgren covered the period after WWII
which as he stated “wasn’t all poodle skirts, sock hops and
Rock Around the Clock but included the Cold War, the Civil
Rights Movement and much more. A lunch followed with a
“St. Patrick’s Day” pot luck meal brought in by the HCE
members. In the afternoon a Spring Council Meeting and a
Silent Auction was held.
Future activities include “Stitches of Love”,
making fleece quilts and book bags. This will be held on
March 24th at Brookside Town Hall in Pensaukee at 9:30
a.m.
On April 21, 2015, HCE will meet at the
Campshure Farm, 5123 Glynn Road, Oconto, for Teacup
Gardening at 9:30 a.m.
On May 5, 2015 HCE will hold their annual banquet at
Romy’s Holiday Inn at Kelly Lake.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National
Forest trail closures
RHINELANDER, Wis. (March 11, 2015) – The
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest’s snowmobile, allterrain vehicle (ATV), utility-terrain vehicle (UTV), horse
and bicycle trails are now closed and will remain closed
until further notice.
During this time period, the use of wheeled motorized
vehicles, mountain bikes, horses or other pack or saddle
animals is prohibited on National Forest System trails.
This seasonal closure of trails during spring
break-up reduces rutting and erosion of trails which often
occurs when the soil is saturated. Protecting recreation

Wabeno School Savings Challenge
Funny and upbeat, with just a pinch of sass, The
Good Lovelies will bring their sweet, textbook three-part
harmonies to the Nicolet College Theatre at 7:30 p.m.,
Thursday, March 26.
Their lively repertoire mixes folk, bluegrass, and
jazz, and their irresistible voices never fail to charm. With
equal parts city and country, highway and home, the
Canadian trio is noted for lighthearted songwriting and
uplifting charm.
“They bring this collective personae to the stage
that really resonates with the audience,” said Jim Nuttall,
Nicoelt College Theatre director. “The atmosphere they
create is fun, oftentimes whimsical, and always
entertaining.”
Being consumate music professionals, each of
the three women are adept at playing more than a half
dozen instruments and constantly trade and switch pieces
during a performance.
In Canada, they’ve been the darlings of summer
music festivals for 10 years, including stops at the storied
Mariposa and Hillside Festivals and the Montreal Jazz

Pickerel's Maplewood Golf Course, for some reason, seems
to be anxious for spring to arrive.
Grose Excavating's entry was a hit. They featured an Irish
Labrador Retriever. It is a little seen breed, but attractive!
St. John's Lutheran Church added lots of color and a festive
touch to the parade.
Dvorak's Docks featured and Irish fishing boat and a unique
Leprechaun that passed out candy to the kids.

Final Lap brought a great vintage car. A fine time was had
by all, but we aren't sure how they felt Sunday morning.
