Get Your Sleds Ready, it’s time for
the Annual Homemade Sled
and Shovel Race
Crandon Lions 33rd Annual
Fish-O-Ree Saturday, Jan. 17
5th Annual Coat Drive
is big success
Photo from a
previous event
The Fifth Annual Homemade Sled and Shovel
Race on Mission Hill is approaching quickly. The event is
set for Saturday, January 24th, registration at noon, racing
at 1. The time has come to get to work making your sleds
and rigging up your shovels!
Mission Hill can be found near the railroad
crossing on the east end of Glen Street. The competitions
are open to all ages. There is a $5 entry fee and prizes for
each competition. Both the homemade sled race and
shovel race will have two age categories, 12 and younger
and 13 and older. Participants should arrive at noon to
register for the races.
The rules of the Homemade Sled Race prohibit
any sort of factory-made sled or any sled with a motor.
Each sled must have at least one occupant, but cannot
have more than two. Every sled should also be fit for
multiple runs. We are hoping to have radar runs again this
year with the help of our esteemed Crandon Police
Department. There will also be a category for Forest
County’s Fastest Sled. Also, this year we will have
consolation trophies for multiple categories including:
“Most Creative Sled”, “Fastest Looking Sled”, “Deathtrap”,
etc.
During the races everyone is invited to enjoy the
bonfire, hot chocolate, and hot dog roast. The extended
forecast looks to be beautiful weather! Bring your own
chair. If you have any questions or need further
information, please call Micah at (715)478-2730.
Health agency urges residents to
fight the spread of influenza and
other illnesses
Health Officials Urge Residents to Stay Home If They're
Sick
Madison,Wisconsin is experiencing an especially
bad influenza season, and the state Department of Health
Services (DHS) is urging people who may have the flu, or
other illnesses, to stay home from work or school to avoid
spreading sickness.
"People may think they're being tough and
responsible by showing up at work or school when they
aren't feeling well, but the fact is they're doing their coworkers or classmates a disservice by potentially
spreading an illness to others," said Karen McKeown,
State Health Officer.
People over the age of 65 have been especially
hard-hit this influenza season, and DHS also urges state
residents to avoid visiting elderly family, friends, or anyone
in a long-term care facility, such as a nursing home, if they
are under the weather.
"We also want to stress that it's never too late to
get a flu shot, and we encourage anyone who hasn't done
so to get vaccinated as soon as they can," McKeown

Update from Forest County Forestry
and Recreation Committee
By Boyd Monte
The Forest County Forestry and Recreation
Committee met last Monday, January 12 at 4:00 p.m. in the
County Board Room of the Forest County Courthouse.
The amendments to the 15 year Comprehensive
Land Use Plan that do not concern the possible MRA park
are to go to the full county board for approval. The
amendments to the plan that concern the park can be
brought to the full board at a later date.
Checks were sent to the three towns that have
county forest on their land. They are Crandon, Lincoln
and Nashville. Ten percent of the money made by timber
sales goes back to the towns. The amount depends on
the acreage of county forest that each town has and what
the total sales amounted to. This year the 10 percent is
around $32,000.00.
There was also a resolution to purchase a 40 acre
block of land. The BCPL Block was approved for
purchase. There is a Knowles Nelson Stewardship grant
that will pay for half of this land.
The final item on the agenda is a the building of a
new managers cabin on the Veteran’s Memorial Park and
Campground on the south side of Lake Metonga. The
project was budgeted and the county is getting ready to
advertise for bids in the coming weeks. The county is
making final adjustments to the blueprints and then will
ask for bids.
The next forestry meeting will be held at 4:00 p.m.
in the county board room in the courthouse.

Chieko "Kim" Margaret
Fohrman went to her heavenly
home on January 12, 2015 at the
age of 87.
Beloved wife of James August
Fohrman, loving mother of Steven
(Susan)Fohrman, Debra Fohrman
(fiance, Jeffry) and Jeffrey
(Petronella) Fohrman, proud
grandmother of Ryan (Ashley)
Fohrman, Jared Fohrman (Kinsey), Nicollette (Joshua)
Jaster, Trisha (Brandon) Nelson, Shane DeSantel, Shephen
Fohrman and Kyle Fohrman, adoring great grandmother of
Jace Walters, Noah Nelson and Trenton Fohrman and dear
daughter of parents and three brothers from Japan.
Chieko was known for her "classy" appearance
and her compassionate demeanor. Her humbling,
endearing nature embraced many friendships. Chieko
loved traveling, which was continuous and afforded by the
26 years of "her Jimmy's" military career. Shopping was yet
another great passion of hers.
There were always "good deals" awaiting her pocketbook.
This passion lives on in her daughter and granddaughters.
Although born and raised in Japan, her life took on
excitement and adventure with her best friend and partner,
"Jimmy", with her life journey here in the United States. After
60 years of marriage to "her Jimmy", she will FOREVER hold
a precious place in his heart. As the angels embraced her
soul and raised her to her heavenly father, Chieko will be
deeply missed as we remember her great commitment and
love to her faith, culture and family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 16, from
9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. Leonard Catholic Church,
Laona. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. with

officiating.
Interment will be in the Laona Cemetery. WeberHill Funeral Home is assisting the family. Condolences to
the family may be left at weberhillfuneralhome.com.

WORVPI hasn't answered the Forest County
Forestry Department
After WORVPI's requested changes to the Forest
County 15 year forestry plan , John Schnoor , Melinda Otto,
and Jack Matuszewski, along with the WORVPI board have
not responded to a few basic and generic questions put
forth to them in the following letter.
Submitted by Steve Bunda
Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle Park Inc.
John Schnorr
PO Box 321
Crandon, WI 54520
Dear WORVPI Members:
This letter is intended to summarize actions and request
additional information from the meeting held on December
9, 2014, between WORVPI and the Forestry and Recreation
Committee-MRA Park Sub-Committee.
Our Forestry Department contacted Melinda Otto on
December 10, 2014, via telephone, to select the next
meeting date in January 2015. Potential meeting dates for
January include the 5th, 6th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 26th and
27th. Please contact us as soon as possible so we may
schedule our next meeting.
After discussion with Forest County Corporation Council,
Department of Natural Resources, Forestry and Recreation
Committee-MRA Park Sub-Committee it was agreed that
WORVPI would provide additional information to Forest
County so we may begin to develop an amendment to the
Forest County Forest Comprehensive Land Use Plan to
consider the development of an MRA Park. It was
requested that this information be provided at least one
week before our January meeting to allow time for the
County staff to review the proposal.
The information requested should be part of an MRA Park
Plan which will contain, at a minimum, the following:
1.
General
a.
A definition of the Forest County MRA Park.
b.
Define the acceptable uses of the MRA Park.
c.
Define the prohibited uses of the MRA Park.
d.
Provide a fee schedule for motorized and nonmotorized users.
e.
Location and size of the MRA Park (total project
size and each phase).
f.
Will park users need to be a member of WORVPI or
other groups/organizations?
2.
Business Relationship
a.
How will revenue be disbursed for administration,
maintenance, development and profits?
b.
What is the proposed business relationship
between Forest County and WORVPI?
c.
What type of business is WORVPI?
3.
Road Use Plan
a.
What types and lengths of roads and trails will be
developed in each phase for the MRA Park?
b.
What is the proposed funding source and
maintenance schedule for roads and trails?
c.
What would the design and maintenance
specifications be for proposed trails?
(e.g.) width,
materials, culvert needs, wetland or stream crossings,
permits expected maintenance activities and schedules,
trail standards?
d.
How will seasonal vehicle usage be regulated to
prevent environmental damage?
e.
Are there additional development plans outside
the campground area?
f.
Desired closure criteria for seasonal, weather and
forest management activities.
This list should not be considered all inclusive and
additional information will most likely be required before it
can be fully determined if an MRA Park is compatible with
the County Forest Law.
However, we believe this
information will be useful as we move forward in the
amending the 15 Year Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
We have enclosed the current soil disturbance and rutting
policy found in our timber sale contract as well as manuals
for Best Management Practices for Water Quality and
Invasive Species. The manual for invasive species is
available at www.wisconsinforestry.org. The manual for
w a t e r q u a l i t y i s a v a i l a b l e a t
http://dnr.wi.gov/files/pdf/pubs/fr/FR0093.pdf.
Lastly, to keep these meetings as productive as possible
we request you bring all items such as the feasibility study,
maps, appraisal and any other resources that may help you
answer additional questions.
Sincerely,
David W. Ziolkowski
County Forest Administrator

How stress affects your back
Your emotional health can produce negative
physical effects. Continuous stress can cause a cycle of
fatigue and muscle tension, further stressing your mind and
body. A primary target is your back.
Chronic stress and depression have been linked to
back strain that leads to chronic pain and disability. Some
research suggests that many cases of chronic back and
neck pain may result from nervous tension, which
temporarily constricts blood vessels, reducing oxygen to
the cells.
Best solutions for reducing stress-related back
pain:
• Be aware of when you feel especially stressed.
Find relief before your emotional tension affects your back -change activities, exercise or meditate.
• Fit in daily physical activity. In particular, aerobic
workouts can reduce depression, relieve stress and
strengthen your back muscles.
• Modify your repetitive tasks. If your work is
sedentary, do as many task as possible standing up to break
up muscle tension; take stretching and walking breaks.
• Watch your posture. Avoid slouching and
hunching forward.
You don't have to live with back or neck pain.
Examine your lifestyle and work environment to find ways to
reverse situations that can produce stress and hurt your
back.

Animal Resource Fund
Cory Campbell
Now that the holidays are behind us, we’re all looking forward to SPRING!! This
winter has not been kind so far, and especially for the animals who are bearing the brunt of
it all.
Your outside animals need extra nourishment, of course, but they also require
plenty of fresh water in order to be able to maintain their body temperature. Please!
Snow is NOT a replacement for water.
We are fostering a dog right now that came to us not only starved, but severely
dehydrated from lack of plain, old, free, water. A heated water bowl is ideal, but
replenishing the water several times daily can accomplish the same thing. In our climate,
an insulated dog house with bedding is a minimum necessity.
As a rule, each animal we take in to foster needs a good cleaning-up and
grooming, and thankfully, Nicolet Pet Grooms does that pro bono for us as their donation
to the cause.
We are keeping ahead of the need for pet food at the food pantry by replenishing
the shelves each Monday, but the girls at the pantry are good about keeping us informed if
they’re running short before the end of the week. Your pet is a loving, loyal member of
your family, whose needs must be met, but if you’re having difficulty meeting those needs,
A.R.F. is there to help.
For those of you who may still have a pet that has not been spayed or neutered,
here is your chance to get that done. The Fix Is In, a high quality, affordable spay/neuter
mobile clinic will be in an area near you soon. Antigo – Jan 27 & 28, and Feb 17 & 18.
Crandon – Friday, Feb 20. Rhinelander- Jan 16 & Feb 13. To schedule an appointment, call
715-550-7729. You must leave a message with your name, Phone number and a time when
you will most likely be at home to receive a return call. They, like us, are all volunteers, so no
one is able to sit by a phone all day. They will return your call as soon as they can.
Normal prices are: female dog - $100.00, male dog $85.00, female cat $50.00, male
cat $40.00. Right now, if you live in one of these zip code areas: 54103, 54511, 54520, 0r
54541, those prices are cut in half. This group has received a grant to help get more animals
taken care of, but this money is now running low, so NOW is the time to get in on this
incredible deal. These prices include the rabies vaccination, nail trim, and ear cleaning.
These schedules are arranged a couple of months in advance, so
you have a chance to get in on one that’s nearest you. To access their schedule in the future,
go to http://the-fix-is-in.org/ or you may call me for dates if you do not have internet.
The family of five kittens that I mentioned in our last news are being spayed/neutered at the
Antigo Fix Is In clinic, so they will be adoptable the first part of Feb. Adoption papers have
been received for three of the five, but if you’re considering a kitten, give us a call – 715-4782398 (me) or 715-478-3190 (foster parents) to apply.

Cont. from pg. 1
added. "Even though this year's flu shot is not as good a
match as it has been in most other years, it still can reduce
the severity of flu symptoms among those who get the flu,
and reduce rates of hospitalization and death."
Influenza is a contagious disease that infects the
respiratory tract (nose, throat, and lungs). Symptoms can
come on suddenly with fever, headache, tiredness, dry
cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and body aches.
The illness can be mild to severe, and can sometimes lead
to death. Nearly 3,000 people have been hospitalized with
laboratory confirmed influenza in Wisconsin this season.
Of those who have been hospitalized, 72 percent are over
age 65.
In addition to influenza, Wisconsin has also seen
an increase in cases of pertussis (whooping cough), and
in outbreaks caused by norovirus. Symptoms of norovirus
infection typically include nausea, stomach cramping,
vomiting, and diarrhea. Norovirus infection is often
mistakenly referred to as "stomach flu," but is unrelated to
influenza.
Along with staying home when sick, DHS urges
residents to avoid illnesses through frequent and
thorough hand washing, covering the nose and mouth
when coughing or sneezing, eating nutritious food,
exercising, and getting enough rest.

INSURANCE TIP
FROZEN PIPES
If you have homeowners
form 3 coverage, you
have coverage for
sudden and accidental
bursting of pipes.
You would also have
coverage for ensuing
water damage to your
home. It is a horrible
mess and last year's
winter resulted in several
of our clients having to
deal with it. Your
insurance company is
there to work with you
and your contractor.
Some things you should
consider to help avoid
the problem in the future,
is maintaining your heat
at a minimum of 60
degrees. There are
some companies that
can alert you if your
heating system fails. If
you leave on vacation,
make sure you have
someone checking on
your home. Make sure
your basement and
home have adequate
insulation. This winter is
shaping up to be similar
to last year. Be careful!

Senator Cruz Makes Good on Packers vs. Cowboys Wager
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX)
made good on a friendly wager with U.S. Senator Tammy
Baldwin (D-WI) after the Green Bay Packers defeated the
Dallas Cowboys 26-21 in the NFL Second Round Playoffs
on Sunday, January 11, 2015. Senator Cruz graciously
treated Senator Baldwin to Blue Bell ice cream and Shiner
Bock beer.
“The Packers have left few to question who really
holds the title of ‘America’s Team,’” said Senator Baldwin.
“I appreciate Senator Cruz’s courage to bet against the
Packers, and his generosity in defeat. If he’s looking for a
hug I hear there’s a Cowboy fan in New Jersey who needs
one too.”
