MERRY CHRISTMAS
ONE SOLITARY LIFE
The priests and staff of Sacred Heart Church wish all our
parishioners, their families and guests a very Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year. May God bless you all for your
kindness and dedication to our Church.
He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant
woman. He grew up in still another village where he worked
in a carpenter shop until he was thirty. Then for more than
three years he was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a
book. He never held office. He never visited a big city. He
never traveled two hundred miles from the place where he
was born. He did not have the things one usually associates
with greatness. He had no credentials but himself. He was
only thirty-three when the tide of public opinion turned
against him. His friends ran away. He was turned over to his
enemies and went through a mockery of a trial. He was nailed
to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his
executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he
had on earth. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed
grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen centuries have
come and gone and today he is the central figure of the human
race and the leader of mankind’s progress. All the armies that
ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the
parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put
together have not affected the life on man on earth as much as
that ONE SOLITARY LIFE.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
By the year 800, when anointing was defined as the proper
office of priests, very complicated rituals began to take shape.
Perhaps this was to reassure the laity, who had memories of
an earlier practice, that the new way was not only better, but
impossible for a layperson to conduct. Blessings and
sprinkling of holy water, the singing of as many as seven
psalms, penance, anointing of all the senses, viaticum, all
capped off by the clothing of the sick person in penitential
garments, were part of the rite. This proved unwieldy, and
creative spirits got to work. By the 1500s people made
distinctions between visiting the sick, anointing, and
viaticum. The attempt of the Church to be faithful to the
image of a healing Christ has some complicated history,
including centuries when the celebration was rare. Most sick
people had no access to the rites at all; only monastics or the
well-off had much hope of this care. Today, those unhappy
days are long behind us, and the care of the sick is an
essential task in every parish’s life. As Christmas approaches
almost everyone comes in contact with someone who is a
candidate for pastoral care. You live out the best of our
tradition when you arrange for a sick person to receive Holy
Communion or the sacrament of the sick and the consolation
of regular contact with the faith community.
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS
If you would like to make a donation towards the purchase of
our Christmas flowers, trees, etc., there are offering envelopes
at Church doors. Please complete form and return to the
collection basket or the parish office. Thank you for helping
us decorate our Church as we prepare for the Birth of Christ.
CHRISTMAS
A young mother, her eyes shining with fatigue, who is
arranging her hair; a father who finds himself alone with his
pretty wife and baby, straightening the stable to make himself
useful in some way; shepherds who bring cheese and perhaps
also some curdled milk; sheep who look at their shepherds
while bleating; a donkey who is eying his manger changed
into a cradle; an adorable swaddled baby whom one calls
Savior, Christ and LORD: this is the manifestation of the
goodness and the tenderness of God. This is the most fantastic
birth in the history of humanity, the one which changed the
face of the world! This is how far God humbled and
compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel!
NEW YEAR’S DAY
FELOWSHIP DINNER
Will be held January 1, 2015, 1-3PM in our Church Hall. We
really need your help. Volunteers and donations of cooked
turkeys, hams, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables are

[email protected] and tell us what you’ll be able to cook
for this important community event. Donations to help defray
the cost of the dinner are also appreciated. Make checks
payable to Sacred Heart Church with New Year’s Dinner in

GOD OF LOVE, AND LIFE
FATHER, SON AND HOLY SPIRIT
YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO
YOUR PARISH
In his book Conversion: Reflections on Life and Faith, Father
James Turro writes “Birds are meant to fly. They have wings
and just the right form to soar and glide. Yet they cannot
leave the ground without one more thing—a current of air
they cannot fly in a vacuum.
Christmas is the season when, according to customs, gifts are
given and exchanged as a sign of gratitude and love. This
sharing is an appreciation to loved ones and friends for sharing their lives with us and giving of themselves in so many
different ways throughout the year. For us gift-giving has
special significance because at Christmas we celebrate the
giving of the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ, the Incarnate
Son of God. No gift ever given or received can parallel the
gift of God’s Divine Son, Mary’s boy child, Jesus Christ, who
was born on Christmas Day.
“Just as birds are meant to fly, we are meant to live forever in
happiness. But as much as we have a passion for it we cannot
do it ourselves. We must have an assist from God.”
“Christmas is the celebration of God giving us just the lift
we need to realize our destiny. The word is flesh, and now
God is the air beneath our wings”.

BREAKFAST CLUB
Perhaps you have experienced the loss of a loved one, a

loss that needs to be dealt with. The Club meets the 2nd and
4th Saturday of each month at 9AM in the Church Hall
kitchen for one hour of “coffee and” as we share our
experiences in dealing and handling such issues. No
reservation, fee or commitment is necessary. To anyone,
young, old, male or female, dealing with such issues you are

a group of people who are dealing with a loss of any kind. For

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
ECHOING MARY’S DECISION—The angel Gabriel today
confronts Mary with a mystery. The mystery of salvation in
Christ is not a mystery that is solved, but a reality beyond our
comprehension that we must chose to enter into. In the liturgy
of the Eastern Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will enter
into the mystery; God waits. Adam and Eve and all the souls of
the dead who long for paradise wait, angels wait for new heavenly companions. And there is much rejoicing when her decision is “yes”. We have less dramatic choices offered to us, but
the mystery of our salvation in Christ is by no means “solved.”
W may understand it a bit better due to Mary’s “yes.” We may
be a bit closer to it through the passion, death, and resurrection
of Jesus Christ. But is still remains a mystery to which we all
must give our own “yes.” Soon we will be singing “O come, let
us adore him. May our Advent prayer, our echo of Mary’s
“yes,” continue then so we may enter into the mystery of our
salvation in Jesus Christ, God among us.
CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART
Christmas! Tis the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in
the hall, the genial fire of charity in the heart.
