ALL LODGE NOTIFICATIONS IN THIS PUBLICATION ARE OFFICIAL NOTIFICATIONS AND NO OTHER NEED BE GIVEN NAPA ELKS LODGE #832 Grapevine Express Commitment ~ Communication ~ Collegiality July, 2014 VOLUME 93 / ISSUE 4, CALVIN COX, EXALTED RULER NAPA CALIFORNIA MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXALTED RULER Summertime is here and we have planned many family and friend oriented events to be held outside to enjoy the warm weather. Starting with an All American 4th of July, we are entering a float in Napa's Downtown Parade. Anyone that would like to join in, come on down and sign up. There will be a BBQ at the Lodge after the parade; Dave Silveira, Chairman. Hot August Sunday, August 3rd, with a car show, chili cook off, bocce tournament and horseshoes. Anyone that would like to help out, please contact Sandy Silveira, Chairman. We are taking sign-ups for a bus trip to Oakland for an A’s ball game around August 20th. The date could change. Sign-up sheet at the bar (Jim Day, Chairman). A first-time “Pentathlon” is scheduled on August 24th. We hope to make this an annual event by sending out a challenge to other Lodges to send a team to compete in pool, bocce, darts, horseshoes and shuffleboard. There will be a perpetual trophy to be kept for a year by the winning lodge. CalvinCox, ER presents David Lamp with Elk of the Month Award I know I'm sounding like the Event Coordinator, but I want all the volunteers and chairmen to know I support them in all the planning and work it takes to put on all of these events. The only way the rest of us can be supportive is by attending with family and friends and enjoying their efforts and I hope you will. Last month in May, David Lamp was awarded the Elk of the Month Award for all his hard work around the Lodge. Thanks Dave!! Also, I want all of us to give a big THANK YOU to PER Gene Aber for volunteering and painting the Bocce ball courts. It took several days in the sun. Good job Gene!! On the very sad side of things, I want to announce the passing of our Brother, Mr. Bob Ellis. He was one of our Volunteer Bartenders. He sold Hershey bars in the Lodge for the purple pig and probably many other things which I haven't been around long enough to know about. In all, Bob was a great guy and we will sincerely miss him. Fraternally, Calvin Cox, Exalted Ruler Dustin Lewis and his father were congratulated by PER Len Fisher and ENF Chairman Jan Schreiber for making it to the National Finals in the Most Valuable Student Scholarship event for 2013-2014 FROM YOUR LODGE SECRETARY Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful summer weather we are experiencing. Last Wednesday night, June 18th, we initiated two new members into our Lodge. They are Robert "Alan" Miller and Gerry Blau. We also had Merton Perry transfer from the Vallejo Lodge. Welcome to all of them!! One of our most beloved members, Bob Ellis, passed away on Saturday, June 21st. He will be missed very much by all of us. Bob made a big effort all the time to sell Hershey bars for the purple pig. His services are pending. At this time, we have 36 delinquent members. Please remember if you haven't paid your dues, you cannot come into the Lodge! If you are a current member, you can take a dimit from the Lodge. You cannot just drop your membership unless you are current. If there are any questions about this matter, please don't hesitate to call me 255-4522. Don't forget to come by on for the 4th of July Parade or at least come to the Lodge for a BBQ afterward. Also we have our State Vice President's visit on July 26th. Hope to see you there!! Best to all! Judy Fisher, Lodge Secretary PROPOSED FOR MEMBERSHIP: Jeffrey Lee Scott IV, Sponsor: Karl Hansen ~ Cynthia Van Hoff, Sponsor: John Shields (Florida Lodge) ~ Douglas Pharr, Sponsor: Mark Richmond ~ Merton Perry, Transferring from the Vallejo Lodge THE ELKS EAR (Things that are going on at the Old Lodge) July, how can that be!? Guess we need to pay more attention. June was a very busy month with a lot of activities, thank you very much Sandy!! Our first District Flag Day ceremony was held at our Lodge on June 14th. The Veterans Home sent two busloads of Veterans to celebrate with our District Elk Lodges. It was a very moving ceremony, followed by a great BBQ. Our own Boy Scout Troop 832 ended the day with a flag retirement of our American flags. We could use a little more help next year, so be ready. July seems to be rather quiet with only the Fourth of July Parade and BBQ on tap. Anyone that would like to join us, come on down! Now August is another matter! Hot August Sunday is really an event you do not want to miss! You will hear a lot more about it. We are having a pentathlon on August 24th. This is totally new event. It will start with a bloody mary contest at 9:00 a.m., followed by a five event contest. Contestants will toss 4 horseshoes, 4 bocce balls, 4 darts, 4 shuffleboard pieces and 4 shots on the pool tables. Prizes will be awarded for high scores for men, women and high team. A team will be two men and two women. Hopefully we can entice other Lodges to join us in the fun. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be available, and of course the bar will be available to assist with your progress. And, as a bonus, we will have a Hole in One, or closest to the pin contest. PURPLE PIG REPORT FOR MAY James Hickey, Terry Sigel, Calvin Cox, Bob Ellis, John Johnson, and the "Hershey" Pig and the Bar Pigs for a May total of $402.67 Activities Report for June/July Father’s Day BBQ: We had our celebration for Father’s Day on June 13th, very nice turnout for the Dads. Approximately 70 folks were in attendance for the Friday Night BBQ. All the Father’s received a ticket that was good for a glass of wine or a free beer. We added ribs to the regular Friday Night BBQ and they were a big hit. Many thanks to the McFarland’s for the wonderful cheesecake desserts. And we celebrated a birthday, so we also had birthday cake, thank you Tom Solon for the cake. Elks District Flag Day: Was held at our lodge on June 14th. We had a smaller turnout than what was expected, however, the food was great. The Flag ceremony was held in the Banquet Room, many district officers took part in the flag presentations. And we welcomed some of the surrounding counties beauty Queens. The Boy Scouts performed the Flag Burning Ceremony; this is always very touching and impressive. The veterans from the Veterans Home enjoyed the day. Thanks to Bus Langdon, who chaired this event and to his committee. Look Forward to a Busy Summer! The committee is seeking two to four more members to provide assistance and guidance in the development of both the adult and the junior clubs. Contact John at the methods listed above. John Olney suggests that the NEL Golf Club be organized in accordance with the guidelines provided in GLS Chapter 13, sec. 13.200, page 200. (Below is a paraphrased extraction) 1. Only regular and associate members of NEL may join the Club 2. Only Members in good standing may be officers of the organization 3. All funds generated by the organization, EXCEPT DUES, belong to the Lodge 4. The organization shall have its own by-laws that require conformance to Lodge by-laws and do not conflict with the Constitution or Laws of the Order of BPOE. These by-laws only require Lodge Membership approval. 5. All members must execute an indemnification agreement given to NEL holding the Grand Lodge, State Association and Napa Elks Lodge harmless from any personal or property injury/damages such members could incur upon themselves, others or Lodge/guest property through participation in the Golf Club activities and on its physical facilities. Formal organizational structure recommendations will be prepared and sent to all members for their review and subsequent vote to approve or reject by the August Bulletin including the announcement of the date when the floor vote will take place. Use of the golf green, sand trap, teeing mats, etc. Because of the possibilities of personal and property damages, nobody will be allowed to use these practice and fundraising facilities without completing the following: 1. Execution of the indemnification agreement 2. Review by the Golf Committee of golfer ability to control golf club swing. a. Golf club degrees of loft are limited to sand and pitching wedges only for hitting to the green from the tee mats and trap. Putters only on the green. No golf clubs from nine (9) through driver may be used. b. Attempts to purposely drive golf balls into Elks Way, the RV Space Rental Lot, over the fence into the trail, grove and/or river can result in suspension of the guilty party from using the golf practice facilities. c. Persons judged to be intoxicated will be denied use of the facilities while they are intoxicated. d. Only plastic balls will be used by “golfers” when hitting from mats or traps until certified by the Golf Committee. Golfers will not be allowed to “drive” regulation golf balls from the hitting mats to the green or from the trap to the green until the golfer is certified by the Golf Committee to be able to control distance, slicing and hooking swings when using regulation golf balls. e. Guests of NEL Members, whether members of another Lodge or unaffiliated to BPOE, and only when in company with a NEL ELK Member, desiring to use the golf facilities must execute and file an indemnification agreement with the Golf Committee prior to using the facilities. The NEL member sponsoring guests shall be responsible for insuring that their guest(s) comply with the sub paragraphs of Rule #2. RV Lot space renters must execute the indemnification contract before using the facilities. 3. Golfers may use their own golf clubs and balls. Golf Club owned golf clubs, balls and shag bags for ball retrieval will be available for rent at nominal fees which are undergoing construction at this time. In the meantime the equipment is available at no cost for a brief period of time. 4.
