BINGO LAND
Stories from the Real World & Cyberspace
Special to the Bingo Bugle
By Jeffrey Charboneau
This month: USA Today launches a new Bingo App
The Secret to Life
Retiree Ethel Denney of Yarm, England,
travels to Beacon Bingo in the nearby town
of Redcar by taxi every week to help “keep
her brain active.” She described Bingo as
the secret to a long and happy life, as she
celebrated her 94th birthday at a Redcar
Bingo hall. And even though she hasn’t
won a penny for about a year, Ethel believes playing Bingo provides the much
richer reward of keeping her young. “It
keeps your brain active, and even at my age
I play six sheets,” she told the Teesside Gazette. Ethel, who was once a supermarket
manager, has been playing Bingo for more
than 30 years, well before retirement. “I
once won £2,000 about 15 years ago,” she
says. “But it’s a long time since I’ve won
anything. My last win was about £30 a year
ago.” Ethel also celebrated her birthday
with dinner and a “couple of sherrys” at
Crathorne Arms, a local pub.
A New Bingo App
USA TODAY has released a new game
app called the “USA TODAY Bingo
Cruise.” With the app, players can travel the
virtual high seas while playing Bingo and
earning points—which unlock exotic ports
of call such as Zanzibar, Dubai and Venice.
USA TODAY Bingo Cruise is a real-time,
multi- or single-player game that includes
such social features as in-game chatting
during or between rounds, Facebook login and game invitations. You can play up
to four cards at a time either manually or
allowing for the game to autoplay cards for
you. Players can improve their chances of
winning by taking advantage of a “powerup” system—which offers a range of benefits. The game is free to download on both
iTunes and Google Play.
A Bingo Musical
SCT Playhouse in Spencer, Iowa,
launched its 55th anniversary season with
Bingo! The Winning Musical through seven scheduled performances including two
Sunday matinees. In the show, best friends
and Bingo pals brave a terrible storm in
order to attend the yearly celebration of the
birth of Bingo and tribute to its founder,
Edwin S. Lowe. As the storm knocks out
power at the Bingo hall, the Bingo buddies
are reminded of an ominous night 15 years
earlier that began in the same way—a night
when everything changed, and Bingo came
between best friends, seemingly forever.
The seven-member cast packed laughs and
live music into this superbly-performed
story of friendship and a dark history linked
to the characters’ passion for Bingo.
British Bake Off Bingo
Among the most popular competitive
cooking shows in Great Britain is The
Great British Bake Off, broadcast on BBC
2, where a group of kitchen wizards goes
head to head in a battle of the bakes. This
year’s series was particularly captivating
for audiences—filled with scandal and
drama as well as the usual combination
of cakes and pastries—and attracted millions of viewers to the show’s 2014 finale.

donate money to provide food and housing for the homeless. We bake cookies to
deliver to elderly relatives, friends and
Bingo Buddies. We sing happy little songs
and carols that lift our spirits and keep us in
a joyful mood. For some, especially children, this is the main event of their year.
This year I heard my first Christmas
carol on the day after Labor Day. It was a
commercial and the background music was
HARK, THE HERALD ANGELS SING.
As I hummed along I suddenly realized my
whole mood had been uplifted and I began to imagine the infinite possibilities of
Christmas music all year. What if each of
us continued our Christmas spirit throughout the New Year?
Some time ago, I visited a shut in—a
lovely lady I have known all my life. The
conversation came around to what we each
do to be happy. She told me she likes to
go to Walmart. I offered to shop for her
and she replied, “Oh no…I don’t need
anything. I like to use a riding cart and just
roam the aisles and smile at people. It feels
so good when they smile back.”
Though I personally prefer not to lump
New Year’s Day and Christmas Day into
one feast, and then wish everyone Happy
Holidays, I don’t get upset when a tired,
over-worked sales person says “Happy
Holidays” as she hands me my receipt.
She may be doing what she is told to do.
She is definitely not trying to offend me.
Actually I do hope everyone has Happy
Holidays…a Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year.

BINGO BUGLE Phoenix December 2014
Calculate the Difference
Retiring
How much do you need?
Dear Savvy Senior,
Is there an easy way to figure out
how much savings a person needs
to retire? I’m 52 years old—about
10 years from when I would like to
retire—and I want to see where I
stand.
Planning Ahead
Dear Planning,
How much money you need to retire comfortably is a great question
that all working adults should ask
themselves. Unfortunately, far too
few ever bother thinking about it.
But calculating an approximate
number of how much you’ll need to
have saved for retirement is actually pretty easy and doesn’t take
long to do. Here’s a quick, simple
three-step approach that can help
you find your magic retirement
number.
Estimate Expenses
The first step is the trickiest—
estimating your future retirement
expenses. If you want a quick ballpark estimate, figure around 75 to
85 percent of your current gross income. That’s what most people find
they need to maintain their current
lifestyle in retirement.
If you want a more precise estimate, track your current expenses
on a worksheet and deduct any
costs you expect to go away or
decline when you retire, and add
whatever new ones you anticipate.
Costs you can scratch off your
list include work related expenses
like commuting or lunches out, as
well as the amount you’re socking
away for retirement. You may also
be able to deduct your mortgage if
you expect to have it paid off by retirement, and your kid’s college expenses. Your income taxes should
also be less.
On the other hand, some costs
will probably go up when you retire,
like health care, and depending
on your interests you may spend
a lot more on travel, golf or other
hobbies. And, if you’re going to be
retired for 20 or 30 years you also
need to factor in the occasional big
budget items like a new roof, furnace or car.
Tally Income
Step two is to calculate your retirement income. If you contribute
to Social Security, estimate how
much your monthly benefit will be
at the age you want to retire. You
can get a personalized estimate at
www.ssa.gov/estimator. If you’re
married, remember to count your
spouse’s benefits too.
In addition to Social Security, if
you have a traditional pension plan
from an employer, find out from the
plan administrator how much you
are likely to get when you retire.
And, figure in any other income
from other sources you expect to
have, such as rental properties,
part-time work, etc.
The final step is to do the math.
Subtract your annual expenses
from your annual income. If your
income alone can cover your bills,
you’re all set. If not, you’ll need to
tap your savings, including your
401(k) plans, IRAs, or other investments to make up the difference.
So, let’s say for example you need
around $45,000 a year for retirement and you expect to receive
$25,000 a year from Social Security
and other income. That leaves a
$20,000 shortfall that you’ll need
to pull from your nest egg each year
($45,000 – $25,000 = $20,000).
Multiply your shortfall by 25, and
that’s how much you’ll need to have
saved.
In the case above, you would multiply $20,000 by 25 and come up
with $500,000.
Why 25? Because that would allow you to pull 4 percent a year
from your savings, which is a safe
withdrawal strategy that in most
cases will let your money last as
long as you do—at least 30 years.
If you find that your savings are
lacking, you might want to go back
to your worksheet and cut some
costs. Or, you may need to consider
part-time work during retirement or
postponing retirement so you can
boost your savings.
Savvy Tip: If you need help figuring out how much you’ll need
to retire, there are varieties of free
online calculators that can assist
you. Some top tools are offered by
Analyze Now (analyzenow.com),
T. Rowe Price (www3.troweprice.
com/ric/ricweb/public/ric.do) and
AARP (aarp.org/work/retirementplanning/retirement_calculator).

Holiday Bingo
Bring a friend
I got the nicest e-mail the other day
(to [email protected]) from a
woman in my home state of Indiana.
She recounted something that she had
done LAST holiday season.
“Bob,” she wrote, “last year you
talked about taking visiting family
members to Bingo. Well, I want you
to know that, as we get closer to the
holidays, I have strong memories of
something I did last year at this time.
“My daughter, her husband and my
granddaughters, had come up from
Nashville to spend Christmas with me.
One day I asked if anyone wanted to go
to Bingo with me that night. Surprisingly, my two granddaughters (both of
them in high school) asked to go along.
I could not have been happier.
“I was amazed that neither of them
had ever played our favorite game before. I was also amazed at how quickly
they caught on to the rules and the patterns of play. On game three BOTH of
them had a Bingo at the same time. I
5
have heard of beginner’s luck, but that
was amazing.
“On the way home from playing, one
of them mentioned to me that she had
never had so much fun doing anything
that didn’t require batteries. The only
bad thing was that the younger of the
two got blue Bingo dauber ink all over
her hands, arms and yellow dress.
“There is more to this story. My
daughter tells me that the moment they
got back to Nashville, they asked if she
would take them to Bingo. Now they
have become “regulars” at a charity
Bingo game. Bob, thanks for the great
idea. Taking them to Bingo has created a great holiday-time memory for
me and created two more Bingo fans.
Emily, Elnora, Indiana.”
Emily, thanks for that great note. I
have always felt that all you have to do
is to BRING people to Bingo and you
have them hooked.
Well, we’re nearing the end of another year. We have a lot to be thankful for,
especially because we still have places
to play. Sadly, too many Bingo halls
have closed because of the economy.
So, here is a New Year’s resolution:
Patronize the places you play Bingo.
Let the managers know how much you
appreciate the games. Let the workers
know how much you are grateful for
their time and effort…and make sure
you tip them. After all, as I say a lot,
they are there all the time, even for the
sessions we don’t attend.
Enjoy your family this time of year.
Take your visitors to play Bingo. It is
our job to keep Bingo healthy and going on and on. See you next year. Bob.

a copy. However, after my third time asking,
the activities director admitted there were
no written rules.
My questions:
1. Isn’t this illegal?
2. At a minimum, isn’t it unethical and
wrong—and therefore illegal—to have the
Bingo host who is running the session also

The complication here is that money is inlast session I played, maybe more. After the

Staying healthy
Cold and flu season
During cold and flu season, there are
several easy steps you can take to reduce the number of times you get sick:
• Wash your hands often. If no water
is available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
• Avoid touching your face. This will
minimize germs coming in contact
with your nose and mouth.
• Drink plenty of fluids. Water rehydrates and flushes out your system.
• Exercise. Regular aerobic exercise
can boost your metabolism and improve circulation.
• Spray or gel your gums. One of the
product that also helps maintain healthy
gums and teeth.
F’rst Defenz Gel or Spray, which aids
in the removal of plaque and tartar and
helps reduce gum irritation, is said to
provide a front line of defense against
germs and help build up your immune
system so you are better able to resist
colds and sore throats.
Besides battling germs, an application
can also offer a soothing effect and stop
the symptoms of colds and other irritations within minutes.
The spray can also be used to soothe
gums before you put in dentures. The
all-natural ingredients include distilled
water, pure grain alcohol, grapefruit
seed extract—which is known to kill
bacteria on contact—grape seed extract
and essential oils including peppermint,
thyme, rosemary and neem oil.

Our friends, Janet and John agreed to
go to Bingo with us and they had with
them the puppy they are training for
Guide Dogs for the Blind. They said they
had permission to bring him to Bingo as
he was too little to be left alone.
Janet and John are an interesting couple. They just returned from a trip to Europe where they toured on a riverboat. “It
was a marvelous experience,” said Janet.
“The best we’ve had and we have taken
three boat trips so far.”
“Where did you like best?” asked
Kate.
“Prague,” was John’s instant reply. “It
is the most marvelous city for exploration.”
“And for shopping,” added Janet. “I
found some wonderful bells to add to my
collection and I could have bought more
but John wouldn’t let me.” She poked him
playfully.
“But touring on a riverboat is such
fun,” continued John. “You are with the

HBO's next season of
True Detective
Q: Is there seriously going to be a
Zoolander sequel? I loved the first one,
but I wonder how good a second one
will be. —Justin R. in Oklahoma
A: Rumors have been swirling for
years about a sequel, and Will Ferrell
confirmed in September that Zoolander
2 is happening, and that his character,
Mugatu, will be a part of it. The plot
has Derek Zoolander (played by Stiller)
and Hansel (Wilson) trying to compete
against younger models as an opposing
company tries to force them out of the
business. I guess the Zoolander Center
for Kids Who Can’t Read Good didn’t
do so well, and Derek had to return to
modeling to make ends meet.
Q: I just got caught up on season
one of HBO’s True Detective, and I
wondered if you could give me any
scoop about season two. —Kyle L.,
via email
A: I can tell you that Colin Farrell
and Vince Vaughn have signed on to
star in next season’s hit HBO series,
which is rumored to be about the
like family.”
Kate and I exchanged glances—an idea
for a future trip maybe?
We were setting up to play Bingo when
the puppy began fussing and wanting attention. “I think I had better take him outside for a few minutes,” said Janet. “You
can manage my cards, John?”
“We’ll help,” I volunteered and Janet
took the puppy out the back door.
The games started and Janet did not
return with the puppy.
“Well where could she have gotten to?”
wondered John and he got up and looked
out the back door. “I can’t see her any
where.”
It was intermission before Janet reappeared looking a bit frazzled. “That darn
pup ran off just as I was settling him to
pee. He dodged between cars in the parking lot and I thought I would never find
him.”
“How did you manage to get him
back?” asked John.
“I finally remembered I had his favorite
squeaky toy in my jacket pocket. I just
pulled it out and began squeaking it until
the little devil couldn’t stand it any more
and came running back to me.” She shook
her head sadly. “He still hasn’t peed.”
Then Janet was on for number 56 and
she could think of nothing but Bingo. The
puppy went unattended and didn’t like
being ignored.
“Oh, I just have to win,” said Janet.
“This will make up for all my frustration
with that darn pup.”
The numbers were called and finally
her number came up in the screen. She
was so excited she jumped up and down
and the puppy began barking.
“Janet, you have to calm down and calm
that pup down too,” said John firmly. He
was big with authority and purpose.
She won. She was ecstatic. It was the
end of a very interesting evening.
“bloody murder of a corrupt city businessman found dead the night before
a major transportation deal.” It will
involve three police officers from different cities working together.
Q: Can you give me any info about
the latest 007 movie? Is it still happening? —Paul T., via email
A: The 24th James Bond film is
indeed happening, Paul, with actors
Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie
Harris returning, along with director
Sam Mendes. They start shooting this
month, with an anticipated fall 2015
release date. Sam confirmed that the
latest film will be the second of a twopart project, meaning it will be a continuation of Skyfall.

Add sugar. Cook in a crockpot on a low to

(more cinnamon can be added if desired).
Stir well. Bake in slow oven until thick. Stir

Ladle apple butter mixture into a hot jar to

“Oh, for the good old days…when
people would stop Christmas shopping when they ran out of money.
—Anonymous
It’s time to celebrate. Yes! Happy Birthday to me! Plus, Merry Christmas, Joyous
Kwanzaa (Friday, December 26, 2014
through Thursday, January 1, 2015), and
Happy Hanukkah (Tuesday, December
16th through sunset on Wednesday, December 24th). Plus, plus…it’s National
Bingo Month. I love December as much as
a dog with fleas loves to scratch.
In 1836 Alabama was the first state to
recognize Christmas as an official holiday.
In 1907, Oklahoma was the last. In today’s
politically correct world, it seems that saying Merry Christmas is not to be done. I
do it anyway and wish all peace and good
will. When I was teaching, I did a holiday
unit with my students. I wanted them to experience diversity and know that all viewpoints are to be embraced and tolerated. As
opposed to our country’s early Puritans,
who did not practice religious freedom and
forbade the singing of Christmas carols.
My Christmas cards are ready to be
mailed. The average household in America
will mail out 28 cards each year. My count
stands at a gazillion or more although every
year I get fewer back, not that I blame anyone for that. With the cost of postage and
the advent of instant technology (e-cards),
the signed Christmas card tradition is heading toward extinction. I make our cards by
putting a funny picture of Robert and me
on the front. Some of our friends and family tell me that the cards are hysterically
funny. Well, I don’t know about that, but
coming up with the right picture and words
is a chore in which my husband does not
choose to participate. His contribution is
posing for our picture. He’s a good sport
though and goes along when I put reindeer
antlers on his head and wrap lights and tinsel around his neck. That’s just one of the
reasons why he’s a great husband.
I start gift shopping early with a goal
of having everything wrapped by early
December. Frantic Friday, the day after
Thanksgiving, is not for me. Some think
that day is the busiest shopping day of the
year, but not so. Friday and Saturday before Christmas share that honor.
Visa cards are used at this time of year
over 5,000 times a minute. I’m surprised
the phone lines do not melt from overuse;
in turn causing meltdowns of all those frustrated last minute shoppers whose plastic
cards would no longer work.
We spend Christmas Eve at my brother’s
house; Christmas Day with our daughters.
We will not be having the early English
traditional dinner of pig head prepared
with mustard. By the way, did you know
about 400,000 people become sick each
year from eating tainted Christmas leftovers? Let’s hope that never happens in
your house or mine. Until next month,
may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you
dance out the door with dollars. Win big.
And since this is Nat’l Bingo Month, it’s
the perfect opportunity for you to e-mail

just that—for charity—and the small Bingo
games that provide it are doing their best
to pay out the prizes they advertise and encourage players to keep coming. —Guy
Prize money
Depends on the turn out
Hi Guy,
I went to a Bingo game I saw advertised
in the Bingo Bugle and decided to check it
out because the prize money looked good
and I thought it would be fun to try out a
new game. When I got there I was disappointed when they announced that they
were lowering the prize amounts because
not enough players had shown up to play.
Isn’t this false advertising? Shouldn’t they
be required to give out the prize money they
advertised regardless of player turnout?
—Cheated in Chicago
Hi Cheated,
It’s certainly easy to understand why you
would be angry when the prize totals were
lowered. You weren’t at Bingo to pass the
time. You were there to WIN MONEY!
But try and look at it from the Bingo operator’s standpoint. The prize money they
give away doesn’t grow on trees—it comes
from the cash people spend on Bingo paper,
pull tabs, supplies, etc. If not enough people
show up, then not enough money comes in.
They can’t operate at a loss or they will soon
have to close their doors. So they are left
with no choice but to reduce payouts.
The only thing I am wondering is if this
allowed by law. I did not see anything in
my quick review of the Illinois Bingo Act
(http://www.gambling-law-us.com/Charitable-Gaming/Illinois/Bingo-Act.htm), but it
is a pretty lengthy document. Nevertheless,
always keep in mind that charity Bingo is
Hi Guy,
My wife and I are at odds over where we
should play Bingo. She loves high-stakes
Bingo and likes to go to casinos to play. I
prefer the smaller community games where
we have gotten to know the players and the
workers.
My issue with the casinos is that they are
far from where we live and require a long
drive by car or the added expense of a bus
trip. Plus, it costs a lot more to play Bingo
at a casino—even though I understand that
the prize money is a lot bigger.
My wife is okay with playing at the small
local halls, but is constantly campaigning to
go to the casino. We end up getting angry
with each other on this topic. Do you have
any ideas? —BB in CA
Hi BB,
My first inclination is to answer your
question with another question: Do you and
your wife have to go to Bingo together?
It seems to me that if you are content
playing at local Bingo halls, you should be
able to do so. And if your wife wants to go
to the casinos to play high-stakes Bingo,
she should be able to do so as well. The
solution? Go to Bingo together when you
are both in the mood to play the same type
of Bingo, and go with other people or solo
when one of you isn’t in the mood.
The biggest challenge, obviously, will be
for your wife—who will have to drive herself or get car/bus rides with other people
if she wants to go to distant casinos more
often. But if it is really important to her, I’m
sure she’ll find a way. —Guy

BINGO BUGLE Phoenix December 2014
I am in my 60s, but I dreamed of
going to a wonderful college with
historical ivy-covered brick buildings. I attended classes where everything awed me. I knew all the
answers and younger students were
fascinated by my knowledge. I felt
like a genius in the most wonderful
way. I am a grocery store checker
and have been for 15 years. I do not
want to change careers to something where I use my brain more so
why would I have this dream?
Satisfied Susan, Chicago, Illinois
Positive dreaming
Dear Dream Lady,
I had the weirdest dream—I
dreamed of watching different body
parts march in a parade. Maybe
I watch too many crime shows.
However, these body parts were
not bloody or violent—they danced
to wonderful music. I saw elbows,
hips, and torsos all enjoying good
vibes. I expected to wake up in a
creepy mood, but I danced around
at work all day when no one was
looking. I wasn’t worried, should I
have been?
Dancing Man, Las Vegas, Nevada
Dear Dancing,
I am happy for you! Dancing elbows tells me you work hard and
enjoy it (as in “elbow grease”). Dancing hips speak of ease and pleasure
(think of a belly dancer). Dancing
torsos tell me you are a compassionate and lively person. I believe this
is your day to sing the “Happy Feet”
song! I hope you have more dreams
like this one! —Dream Lady
Dear Dream Lady,
Dear Satisfied,
Buildings symbolize you, therefore a “historical” college where
learning takes place is great way
to look at yourself. It is clear that
you are content with your career.
I believe you find pleasure in small
things and you look at each day
as an adventure in human nature.
Clerks see a wide variety of people
going through their lines. I believe
you are pleasant to each shopper
and leave your job each day feeling
good about your job and yourself.
Kudos to you and your delightful
dream. —Dream Lady

Ante-only
tournament
Giving poker a unique spin
By Adam Levy
One of the great things about the World
Series of Poker is that the organizers continue to innovate. Each year there are new
variations of poker and new structures.
A few years ago, the WSOP introduced
the ante-only game, and it was a hit with
players. This year’s $1,500 ante-only
no-limit hold ‘em event drew 714 players, a massive field for an event still in its
infancy.
In an ante-only tournament, there are no
blinds. Everyone puts in an ante to get their
hole cards. Instead of the under-the-gun
player being the first to act, the player who
would normally be the small blind (directly
to the left of the button) acts first, because
there is no small blind. The player on the
button acts as the big blind, making that position even more advantageous than usual.
It gets a little confusing at times, especially for observers trying to figure out
what’s going on, but it’s a unique style of
play that makes for a fun tournament. Most
of the pros at the WSOP have played in
hundreds of tournaments, have seen millions of hands, and have a deep reservoir
of information on players and strategy. But
because there are so few ante-only events,
it seems as if everyone is still trying to figure out the “correct” way to play.
This year, I was particularly excited
about the ante-only event. I finished 22nd
in the 2013 event and knew I could improve on that.
I made it to the final table in good position. With five players left, I had about
450,000. I was well behind the two biggest
stacks, but well ahead of the fourth- and
fifth-place guys, who had about 200,000
each. At this stage, I was aiming to take
third or maybe, with some luck, take down
the event.
With antes at 12,000, I looked down at
As Qd. In ante-only events, after you ante,
there’s a minimum “bring-in” to continue
playing. The bring-in is equal to the lowestdenomination chip in play, and at this stage
it was 1,000. With 60,000 already in the
pot, I was getting 60-1 for my hand.
The two short stacks folded. I didn’t
want to open into the big stacks too much,
so I made it 32,000. The player on the button, Rhys Jones, had about 1 million in
chips and called.
The flop came Qc 8d Ad.
I had two pair and figured to be well
ahead. I bet 55,000 into a pot of just over
120,000. Jones shoved all in. I quickly
called.
He was on a flush draw with Kd 4d.
Unfortunately, the turn came out 5d, the
river 7d, and his flush knocked me out in
fifth place.
I got unlucky. But top two pair is going
to play itself there. Some people told me I
could have gone all in preflop. It’s a reasonable argument, and A-Q was a pretty good
hand in this spot. But in ante-only, there are
all kinds of hands in play that wouldn’t be
in a normal hold-‘em event, so your strategy has to change.
Sure, I wanted to win, but it’s an education. I definitely would have played some
things differently, but I learned a great deal
and know that I’ll be able to take those lessons into next year’s WSOP no-ante event.
Adam “Roothlus” Levy is a professional poker player who
has had two deep runs in the WSOP Main Event, finishing
12th and 48th. He has won more than $5 million in live and
online events. Follow him on Twitter: @roothlus.

Exploring Albuquerque
Escaping the winter chill
With December upon us, northerners
look south for an escape from the winter
chill. A great city to consider visiting is
Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque’s
climate is usually sunny and dry, with low
relative humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines
the region, averaging 278 days a year. The
city has four distinct seasons, but the heat
and cold are mild compared to the extremes
that occur in other parts of the country.
To get around successfully in Albuquerque it is helpful to know that the city is
divided into four quadrants—the Northeast,
Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest Quadrants—which the locals will reference when
giving you directions to the city’s sites.
The Northeast Quadrant is very residential but also features attractions worth
exploring. This is the largest quadrant both
geographically and by population. The University of New Mexico, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, Nob Hill, the Uptown
area—which includes two shopping malls
(Coronado Center and ABQ Uptown), Journal Center, and Balloon Fiesta Park are all
located in this quadrant. Some of the most
affluent neighborhoods in the city are located here. The farthest reach of this quadrant
is Cibola National Forest, a beautiful natural
area well worth checking out.
The Northwest Quadrant contains historic
Old Town Albuquerque, which dates back
to the 18th century, as well as the Indian
Pueblo Cultural Center. The area has a mixture of commercial districts and low- to
middle-income neighborhoods. Northwest
Albuquerque includes the largest section of
downtown, Rio Grande Nature Center State
Park and the Bosque (woodlands), Petroglyph National Monument, Martineztown,
Paradise Hills and Cottonwood Mall.
Albuquerque’s Southeast Quadrant is
more business and industrial. Kirtland Air
Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories,
Sandia Science & Technology Park, Albuquerque International Sunport, Central New
Mexico Community College, Albuquerque
Veloport, University Stadium, Isotopes
Park, The Pit, Mesa del Sol, The Pavilion,
Albuquerque Studios, National Museum of
Nuclear Science & History, New Mexico
Veterans Memorial, and Talin Market are all
located in the Southeast Quadrant.
Traditionally consisting of agricultural
and rural areas, the Southwest Quadrant is
often referred to as the South Valley and extends to the Isleta Indian Reservation. This
includes the old communities of Atrisco,
Los Padillas, Kinney, Westgate, Westside,
Mountainview, and Pajarito. The south end
of downtown Albuquerque, the Bosque, the
Barelas neighborhood, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and the Albuquerque
Biological Park are also located here.
For gaming enthusiasts, Albuquerque is
home to Isleta Resort & Casino, which offers Las Vegas-style action in the form of
slots, table games, poker, and Bingo; Isleta
Palace West, with gaming space that features 80 gaming machines; Casino Express,
which featuring 250 gaming machines;
Route 66 Casino Hotel, with 50,000 sq. ft.
of gaming space featuring 1,700 gaming
machines and 30 table and poker games; and
Sandia Resort & Casino, with 160,000 sq.
ft. of gaming space housing 2,200 gaming
machines and 48 table and poker games.
Along with casino Bingo, the area has
plenty of other options for Bingo fans as
well. Visit www.bingobuglenm.com for the
online version of the New Mexico Bingo
Bugle, which includes a large directory of

Bugle Cruise News
Tournament Cruise 2015 itinerary announced!
By Jeffrey Charboneau
Special to the Bingo Bugle
The host ship for the 27th Annual World
Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise is Carnival Breeze, the newest of Carnival Cruise Line’s enormous
Dream-class ships.
There’s fun jam-packed into every corner of Carnival Breeze. As a 2015 Tournament Cruise participant, you’ll have the
opportunity to experience an amazing array
of ship features.
RedFrog Rum Bar: At the RedFrog Rum
Bar, the frog hops right to the chase with a
full poolside selection of Caribbean rumbased concoctions, and of course, plenty of
Carnival’s signature private-label draught
beer, ThirstyFrog Red.
Thrill Theater: Films don’t just leap off
the screen at Thrill Theater, they practically
make you a part of the action! How do you
enter the fifth dimension? Start with an
exciting 3-D film, add special effects (the
kind you can feel!) and throw in a seat that
makes this a truly moving experience.
BlueIguana Tequila Bar: Keep cool—
that’s what official bar mascot, Blue the
Iguana, would tell you—and take in the
BlueIguana Tequila Bar’s Caribbean vacation vibe while you kick back and enjoy
frozen tequila drinks and cold Mexican
beer.
Playlist Productions: Music takes center
stage in Carnival’s Playlist Productions, an
assortment of high-energy shows featuring an all-singing, all-dancing cast on the
stage…and audience in their seats! With
flexibly scheduled show times and songs
you’ll know by heart, you’ll find time for
multiple themed entertainment full of Motown classics, diva favorites, cool tracks
and hot hits.
Carnival WaterWorks: If water is your
thing, WaterWorks is your place. This
onboard water park features two amazing
waterslides: DrainPipe and Twister. At the
center of WaterWorks is a giant (we’re talking 300-gallons-giant!) dump bucket called
the PowerDrencher, combining water and
gravity in a way that’s sure to soak.
Swimming: Pools are places where the
good times flow, and to make sure there are
enough good times for all the ship includes
two pools. The resort-style Beach Pool provides the best seat in the house for kicking
back and enjoying whatever’s playing at
Carnival’s Seaside Theatre. The aft pool,
the Tide Pool, is the ultimate place to enjoy
a dip while taking in the stunning scenery.
Seaside Theatre: Here’s the plot: You,
watching a movie, on a giant screen, outdoors…while relaxing in a pool or maybe
lounging on a beach chair. Sound like a
script you can get behind? Great—the role
is yours!
Serenity Adults-Only Retreat: Carnival
Breeze’s Serenity area lets you take a break
from all the ship’s high-energy action.
Read a book, enjoy the view, sip something
from the bar, or just spend some quality
“you” time. Serenity is your place to swing
in a hammock and just be.
Ocean Plaza: This is the centrally located
place to meet, eat, drink and be entertained
in an indoor/outdoor, islandy setting. Enjoy
a full bar, coffee bar, even snack bar, and
the FunHub Internet cafe. At Ocean Plaza,
daytime activities include trivia and other
games, with things heating up when the sun
goes down through live music and dancing
by night.
Winner’s Luck Casino: This is the glitzy,
glamorous place for testing your gaming luck; even just passing through gives
you that winner’s vibe. Carnival Breeze’s
casino bar is the perfect place to recharge
your batteries for another roll at the casino
games.
The Punchliner Comedy Club: Renowned comedian and entertainer George
Lopez helped pick the talent to deliver the
laughs at The Punchliner Comedy Club, so
come prepared for lively stand-up humor
of the laugh-out-loud sort.
Hasbro, The Game Show: You’ve played
Connect 4 and Yahtzee, but you’ve never
done it onstage with the chance to win
great prizes! You’ll get your chance with
onboard Hasbro Game Shows, which put
a fun twist on these and other funtime
favorites.
Bingo! No list is complete without the
exciting, prize-packed World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise
and its $100,000 in cash and prizes!
This is just a sample of all you can expect
during the 27th Annual World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise.

Between 1659 and 1681, it was illegal
to celebrate Christmas in Massachusetts. If you were caught celebrating,
you would be fined five shillings.
…St. Nicholas is actually a historical figure,
although the name was spelled differently.
St. Nikolaus was the bishop of Myra in
Asia Minor, and he died on Dec. 6, 343. In
different regions of the world he is known
as Klaus, Nickel, Sünnerklas, Seneklos,
Pelznickel, Knecht Ruprecht, Weihnachtsmann and Christkindl. Sometimes he travels
on foot, and sometimes he’s shown riding
a white horse, a reindeer, a mule or even a
goat.
…If you think that Christmas has only
recently become a nightmare of consumerism, consider that as early as the mid-1820s,
Santa Claus was being employed to sell
Christmas goods.
…Clement Clarke Moore, the author of A
Visit From St. Nicholas (more popularly
known as The Night Before Christmas), was
born during the American Revolution and
died during the Civil War.
…The modern image of Santa Claus was
invented by American cartoonist Thomas
Nast in the late 1800s. Until his cartoons
were published at the end of the 19th century, no one really pictured Santa as a fat,
jolly old man with white hair.
…The first image of a Christmas tree to
be printed in the United States appeared in
Boston in 1836. It was an illustration to a
book written by a German immigrant.
…There is no Biblical or historical reason
to place the birth of Jesus on Dec. 25. It was
only in the fourth century that the Church
officially decided to observe Christmas on
Dec. 25.

A Relaxing Start to
the New Year
I visited the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines
Resort and Spa for the first time recently
with my college-age grandchild. It’s a
luxurious resort in the Lost Pines Region
of Bastrop County, Texas, in the midst of
a large forest of Loblolly pines. The 491room destination resort, located just 13
miles from Austin-Bergstrom International
Airport, adjoins the 1,100-acre McKinney
Roughs Nature Park and has 1 mile of river
frontage on the Lower Colorado River.
My grandchild composed her vacation
itinerary by viewing the activity page on
the Lost Pines website. It contains something for everyone, from outdoor activities
to peaceful reflection by the river. She
wanted to go fishing, take archery and
skeet-shooting lessons, kayak, raft down
the river, rock climb, ride horses and bikes,
swim and float down the Crooked River
Water Park, and visit the Spa Django for a
facial, and a manicure and pedicure.
I wanted to sample the food and talk to
the chefs, get some recipe ideas (I’ll share
those in an upcoming column devoted to
all the fabulous food there), bask in the
scenery and relax at the spa. We both got
exactly what we were looking for in a
“glamping” vacation—a mix of luxury,
outdoor activities and rustic relaxation. She
loved everything she experienced and said
it was “one of the best vacations ever!”
That’s high praise from someone who has
visited almost every major amusement
park in the United States.
We both loved our visit to the fullservice Spa Django. There are 18 treatment
rooms and some 50 different treatments,
including a holiday-special Buttered Rum
Body Ritual and the Pecan Pie Manicure
and Pedicure. Whether you seek motivation or inspiration, this sumptuous threestep body scrub composed of butter brulee
milk, rum, brown sugar and rice bran, and a
luxurious manicure and pedicure featuring
a whole milk hand-and-foot soak scented
with notes of creme brulee (!) definitely are
something to sing about!
To honor the turning of the calendar
page, Lost Pines hosts its annual New
Year’s Eve Family Jamboree, an inclusive
vacation package for a family of four (two
adults and two children under 12). Starting
from $509, it includes accommodations,
barbecue dinner, carnival-inspired games
and rides, raffles, Ferris wheel, wagon
rides, live music and a family dance, fireworks, champagne toast and a New Year’s
Day breakfast buffet.
Hyatt Lost Pines guests also will find
recreation offerings for all ages and interests. In addition to hiking along the numerous trails, guests are encouraged to take advantage of activities offered at 1,100-acre
McKinney Roughs Nature Park. It features
summer camp programs for children, a
ropes course, zip line and nature-learning
center. McKinney Roughs also operates
guided river rafting and kayaking excursions.
It’s beautiful place year-round thanks
to our Central Texas weather, but the pine
trees and scenic river location make it the
perfect spot to ring in the New Year, enjoy
a family vacation, a girlfriends spa getaway, weddings, parties or business meetings. The Wolfdancer Golf Club features an
18-hole championship golf course. A large
clubhouse is home to the Major Neighbors
Grill, private dining room, pro shop and
chief’s pavilion.
Lost Pines Resort and Spa is the perfect
place to kick-off a more relaxed, healthier
and happier New Year! To learn more, call

Video Poker Players
Don't be fooled
I’ve written a lot about the 9/6 jacksor-better video poker game, touting it as
one of the best video poker games to play
because it returns 99.5% with expert play.
(For those that don’t know, the 9 refers to
the payout for a full house per coin played,
and the 6 is the payout for the flush per
coin played.) A recent trip to the casinos
with friends alerted me to mistakes players
might be making when looking for the 9/6
game.
As we were walking through the casino,
my friend shouted, “Here’s a 9/6 machine.”
He was all set to sit down and play this 9/6
game when I came over and looked at the
video poker screen. This is what was on it:
(I’m only showing the first column of the
pay schedule.)

Yes, the full house and flush paid 9 and
6 respectively, but this was not a jacks-orbetter game. The game my friend was about
to play was Double Bonus Poker. A 9/6
Double Bonus game has an expected return
of only 97.8% (as opposed to the 99.5%
return for a 9/6 jacks-or-better game). A
better paying Double Bonus game returns
10 and 7 for the full house and flush, with
an expected return of 100.17%. What my
friend was about to do was to play an inferior game even though it paid 9 coins for
the full house and 6 for the flush.
It’s been my experience that most video
poker players don’t know the difference
between one video poker game and another. You shouldn’t just sit down and play
a video poker game because it pays more
for aces, or pays more for four aces with a
kicker, and so on. There are different video
poker games, such as Jacks-or-Better, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus, Double Bonus
Poker, Triple Bonus, Bonus Poker Deluxe,
etc. It is important that you know what the
best pay schedule is for each game, and
what the return of the game is if you play
it accurately.
For example, if you had a choice of
playing a Bonus Poker or Double Double
Bonus Poker game, which one would you
play? The only way to know which is better is to look at the pay schedule for each
game and know what the expected return is
for each game. Trust me, you will find different pay schedules for Bonus Poker in a
casino. Some are good; others are horrible.
Ditto for Double Double Bonus Poker.
Here’s another example my friend came
across in the same casino. I had told him if
he wanted to play Bonus Poker, look for an
8/5 payout for the full house and flush. He
found the following two 8/5 Bonus Poker
games in the same casino:
Royal Flush 250
Straight Flush
Four Aces
30
Four 2-4
Four 5-K

Full House 8

Notice that both Bonus Poker games are
8/5. They pay the same for winning hands
except for four-of-a-kinds. The 8/5 game
in column #2 pays 30 coins for a four-ofkind, whereas the 8/5 game in column #3
pays 80 coins for four aces, 40 coins for
four 2-4, and 25 coins for four 5-K. The
expected return (ER) for the 8/5 Bonus
game in column #2 is 98.5% whereas the
ER for 8/5 game in column #3 is 99.2%.
If you are a smart player, you should play
the game in column #3 (which my friend
did and he ended up hitting four aces for a
nice profit).
If the game in column #2 paid 35 coins
(instead of 30 coins) for all four-of-akinds, the ER would be 99.7%, an excellent game. However, in this casino, they
shorted the payouts to 30 coins, which
lowered the ER to 98.5%. (Note: Even
though this game was labeled Bonus Poker
on the video poker machine, technically
it’s a jacks-or-better game because it pays
the same for all four-of-a-kinds.)
The point I’m making is that if you want
to play video poker, you should know what
the best pay schedule is for each game and
then find those higher paying games in the
casino when you play. That’s how you become a winning video poker player.
(Note: The ER’s quoted in the article
assume the maximum of five coins played.
You should never play less than max coins
when you play video poker; otherwise, the
ER will be lower.)
