In the past 30 days we celebrated our recognition to those individuals, members and nonmembers, whom our Council honors for their outstanding contributions in the prior Columbian Year.
The highlight was our opportunity to bestow our thanks upon Mike O’Malley, our Past Grand Knight,
for all of his hard work during his time as Grand Knight. At the same time, we were able to bestow
upon our core groups that we support a financial gift to help their ongoing needs. We also celebrated
Priesthood Sunday by recognizing our parish priests and offering them all a blessing at the Masses
they performed on the weekend of October 25 and 26.
When I think about the celebration for the events from our previous year, it brings me to the
successes we have already accomplished early in our current year. However, these successes are
not enough to keep our Council from looking at opportunities to keep our traditional gifting policies in
place. You will be receiving information on a holiday 50/50 either in the mail or personally distributed.
The purpose of this 50/50 is to raise funds for the upcoming Holiday Season, when our generosity
has been traditionally shared both to our core groups and others.
As we prepare for the beginning of the Holiday Season, I think about celebrating our annual
Council Thanksgiving dinner which will be held in McKenna Hall at Our Lady of the Lake Parish on
Monday, November 24. It is always wonderful when we can get together as a group and share a
celebration with our families. I appreciate all of the members that work so hard make this night so
special every year.

Also, should you have family members travelling, or if you are travelling for the Thanksgiving
Holiday, my wishes for safe journeys.

As always, remember in your prayers; the sick, the dying, the unborn, the lonely and our
military personnel.

THE FEAST OF ALL SOULS
As we enter the month of November, we think of our loved ones who have died. This year the
feast of All Souls falls on a Sunday. As children we were encouraged to pray for those who have
died. The custom of praying for the dead goes back to the earliest days of the church. From our faith
we know that our prayers can be of assistance to those who have died. We profess it every time we
recite the Nicene Creed: “I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to
come.”
Because we are made in the image and likeness of God, great respect is shown to the person
who has died. The Wake Service gives us the opportunity to show our respect for the deceased by
sharing memories and providing consolation to the bereaved. This is an ideal time for eulogies to
honor the person who has died.
The Funeral Mass is the most important element of the Catholic funeral rite. It is our sharing in
Christ’s Passover from death to life. Since Jesus is the resurrection and the life, we live in hope that
“life is changed, not ended, and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling place is
made ready for us in heaven.”
The last aspect of the Funeral Rite is the committal. Prayers are again offered before the body
is interred. This is very consoling to those who are grieving their loved ones and bidding their last
farewell. If the body is to be cremated, it is strongly encouraged to bring the body of the deceased to
Church for Mass. Then the cremation takes place afterwards.
Bishop Seratelli has issued pastoral guidelines for Catholic funerals. These will be made
available to parishioners and I encourage all of us to read them and become familiar with them. They
all point to the importance of treating the deceased with love and respect as they pass from death to
life.

Brothers, Have you checked the beneficiaries of your Life Insurance recently? Also, review all other
financial plans you may have; aannuities, 401k's, pensions, and so on. Are you sure that if you
should die today that what you leave behind goes to the right place? A recent article I read talked
about the problems that can arise if the recently deceased person never changed the beneficiary on
their Life Insurance and how the proceeds did not go to the person it should have gone to. For
example, of an extreme case, a divorced man remarries and never changes the beneficiary of his Life
Insurance to his new spouse. Now he dies. Since he never changed the beneficiary, the former wife
gets the death benefit. This probably would not make the new spouse happy. If you have any
questions on who your beneficiary is with your Knights of Columbus Life Insurance or Annuity, please

FS Report
To pick up from where I left off in my September article, we will talk about what is covered under the
Community Account and some of the fund raising that has taken place July through September.
Over the course of our Columbian year we will disperse about $16,900 to the different activities covered under
Community Accounts. For example we just held our Grand Knight’s dinner where we gave away a little over
$6,600. Where did this money come from and who will benefit from it? Well over $2,100 came from our
Intellectually Challenged Drive, a dedicated fund drive held last April and $4,500 came from our recently held
Golf Outing proceeds. The Recipients were as follows: Department for
