2013 YMCA OF GREATER FORT WAYNE BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY FindYourselfAtTheY.org TOGETHER. CHANGING LIVES Dear FRIENDS, We have had a remarkable year of delivering extraordinary experiences and impacting lives right here in our community. People of all ages and walks of life are making connections in our Y branches and through programs - improving their health, growing as individuals and serving our community. Our cause is to strengthen the foundation of our community. This past year, we fulfilled our cause by impacting the lives of more than 94,000 people. The Y provides the resources needed to address our most pressing social issues; from preventing chronic diseases and increasing access to healthy living, to providing safe, secure places for children to learn and grow through our before and after school programs. At the Y, everyone has the opportunity to participate. No one is turned away due to the inability to pay. In 2013, 1 out of every 6 people received financial assistance to make a Y membership or program affordable. That’s almost 17,000 people in 2013! It is our desire to continue to make the Y available to all. We are also excited about several new growth projects which will help us continue to serve you. In response to requests from local communities, we launched capital campaigns to meet the critical needs for Early Learning Child Care Centers in both Whitley and Wells Counties. Upon completion these centers will provide nurturing environments for almost 200 children who need all day childcare, or before and after school care. In 2013, we also broke ground on a new Wells County Family Y to be called the Caylor-Nickel Foundation Family YMCA which is scheduled to open in December 2014. The capital campaign for the northeast Y in Fort Wayne, to be called the Jackson R. Lehman Family YMCA, is projected to conclude in 2014 with groundbreaking in late 2015. The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne remains a financially strong organization, capable of addressing critical issues because of the tireless support of members, donors and volunteers. We are fortunate to be positioned in a very generous and compassionate community that supports great causes like the Y. Our goal is, and always will be, to improve the quality of life in our region. It is with our utmost appreciation to you – our volunteers, donors, partners, staff and community members – that we present the 2013 BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY. Explore these pages and you will see our powerful community impact as we help change lives. Thank you for your support as we continue to serve. MARTIN L. PASTURA President & Chief Executive Officer REED MILLER Board President & Chief Visionary Officer AT THE YMCA OF GREATER FORT WAYNE, YOU FIND COMMUNITY. The Y is a nonprofit like no other. That is because across our community, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver, positive change. Walk into any of our branches and you’ll see this is no empty promise. We’re every bit as thriving and diverse as the neighborhoods we serve. And we’re committed to doing everything we can to remain a positive, welcoming place for all. With our focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, we know a strong and promising future can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Gladys isn’t sure where she or her family would be without the support of the YMCA’s Youth Service Bureau (YSB). And, frankly, she doesn’t care to know. Gladys struggled for years with addiction, and her children often suffered as a result. Because she struggled alone, thinking she never had the resources or access to support to help her fight her disease, Gladys found it incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to provide a home and stable living situation for herself and her children. “I probably would have lost my kids,” she says. “The YSB is the one who stepped in and helped me.” Working with YSB counselors and benefiting from a free Y membership made possible through the financial assistance program, Gladys is in successful recovery from her addiction, and she and her children are experiencing a new kind of life - one full of hope, optimism and positive change. “I got a blessing in disguise,” she says of the support she received from the YMCA’s Youth Service Bureau, “which I never thought I would have.” Gladys YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Watson Rowe Bailey McBride Courtney Groll NURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN. Mahkanna Calvert At the Y we focus on the present, and at the same time, we look to the future, especially to help shape our community’s next generation of leaders. Our Teen Leadership Program at the Jorgensen Y is a 9-month leadership class for teens and young adults. Graduates of the program earn certification as a member of the YMCA international leadership movement. And while that’s important, it’s not certification that draws teens to the program. It’s the opportunity to make friends, develop relationships and discover themselves. The Teen Leadership Program at the Jorgensen Y is just one of numerous programs focusing on education, leadership and youth development in our community. Another great example is Team S.O.S. (Students of Success) at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA which provides student and parent workshops, college visits, internships, and opportunities for jobshadowing and volunteering. The Leaders Club at the Parkview Family Y provides teens with leadership training and participation in volunteer service opportunities. Generation Z at the Jorgensen Family Y offers an afterschool program for middle schoolers including a healthy snack, transportation, homework time and activities. Many branches throughout the Y offer Counselor in Training (C.I.T.) and Leader in Training (L.I.T.) programs which provide middle and high school students with a sense of leadership as they learn about themselves and others while assisting counselors during summer day camp and resident camp activities. We offer youth development programs because we know our community creates a better future by investing today in our youth. We don’t just teach swimming or coach soccer. We’re about helping children and teens in our programs grow—physically, mentally, and spiritually—from young children into engaged, active members of our community. 2013 HIGHLIGHTS 7TH GRADE INITIATIVE: 376 students participated in this newly launched initiative which offers a free 1-year membership to every 7th grader in Allen, Wells and Whitley counties. Participants gained new skills and knowledge to promote positive emotional development and good decision-making. EARLY CHILDHOOD & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS: The Y is proud to serve our community by being the largest childcare provider in the area. With more than 20 Early Childhood, Before School and After School care sites our programs pursue outcomes that improve the health and wellness of area children, including teaching kids to make better food and activity choices. EARLY LEARNING CHILDCARE: The Wells and Whitley County Family YMCA’s both responded to community needs and developed permanent solutions for child care in their areas by planning to add Early Learning Child Care Centers to their facilities. YMCA CELEBRATION OF YOUTH AWARDS: Area high school students are nominated for this award for exemplifying the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The following students received a $1,000 college scholarship and a one year Y membership: Caitlin Funnell, Wilisha Graham, Corinne Kauffman and Haley Smethers. 1,834 kids participated in our before-and after school care programs, and were encouraged to reach their fullest potential in a welcoming, supportive environment. 95% of at-risk teens counseled through the Youth Service Bureau’s intervention programs got back on track academically and avoided the juvenile justice system. 433 kids experienced the thrill of nature, character building and lifelong friendships at YMCA Camp Potawotami’s summer resident camp. 6,961 children gained valuable life skills and built self-confidence through swim lessons and youth sports programs. HEALTHY LIVING IMPROVING OUR COMMUNITY’S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. Blanca Sandoval, mother to Christian, Pablo, Blanca Christina and Cristopher Four years ago, Blanca was a single mother raising four young children including a son with a significant medical condition. The daily challenges and hardships she faced led her to an unhealthy lifestyle, including overeating and excessive sleeping just to help her deal with the stress. Even at her lowest moments, however, she knew she wanted something better for her life and for her family. She just didn’t know how to get there. That’s when she discovered the Y. Even though she didn’t speak English at the time, she toured a branch of the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne and learned about many programs and services for families - including, most importantly, the Y’s Financial Assistance program. With financial help from the Y, Blanca and her family were able to secure a membership - and they took their first steps on the road to better health and wellness, leaving their problems behind. “The day my children and I joined the Y,” Blanca says, “we found a place where we could leave all of our problems and stresses behind.” Her children were able to participate in a range of sports and athletic events; Blanca herself lost 50 pounds. Just as importantly, they feel like they are a part of something bigger - a community. “At the Y,” she adds, “we are constantly surrounded by friends and staff members who make us feel welcome and comfortable. They have become our family.” Blanca says the Y has helped her become healthier, more energetic - and a better mother. She’s no longer discouraged or stressed by the challenges of her life; now, she says, she is “strong, beautiful and joyful.” “Four years ago, I discovered the YMCA, and four years ago, I discovered my home.” At the Y, we know that being healthy is more than being physically active. While we provide six locations for working out, we also offer something more important: a way for people to connect with and care for the people in the community. 2013 HIGHLIGHTS PARKVIEW PHYSICIANS GROUP OUTDOOR AQUATIC CENTER: In May, the Jorgensen Family Y impacted the community by opening an outdoor aquatic center. This new amenity includes six 25 yard lap lanes, beach entry, a splash zone, toddler pool, zip line and offers members an opportunity to pursue wellness and have fun doing it. SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY: To keep people at YMCA pools safe, we launched an Initiative called “Test. Mark. Protect.“ requiring all youth ages 13 and younger to perform a swim test to determine whether or not they may swim without a life-jacket or parental supervision. WELLNESS FOR LIFE COACHING PROGRAM: We instituted this free program which connected 630 people with a trained wellness coach for seven weeks to support the pursuit of healthy living. COLLABORATIONS: By collaborating with organizations to identify and meet needs in our community, we engaged in numerous Healthy Community Initiatives such as the Parkview LiVe program, YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, Corporate Wellness Awards, The YMCA Corporate Challenge, Focus on Health, YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program and the YMCA Weight Loss Community Initiative. 94,000 men, women, children and families were impacted by the YMCA’s programs and services in 2013. 1.5 MILLION visits were made through our doors which welcome, support and assist our community. 102 men and women at risk of Type-2 diabetes reduced their chances of developing the disease through the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. 155 local companies committed to their employees’ health and wellness through participation in the Y’s Corporate Membership Program. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY GIVING BACK AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS. Ida Mae, primary-caregiver to 5 grandchildren “ I FOUND STRENGTH & SUPPORT AT THE When Ida Mae came to the Y, she felt as if she were out of options - “I was about to give up,” she remembers. As a grandmother serving as guardian and primary care giver for her five grandchildren, each day was a struggle and argument-filled battle. She felt a distinct and discouraging lack of respect and affection from her grandchildren, and it caused her a lot of pain and distress. So she turned to the YMCA’s Youth Service Bureau (YSB) for help and found the strength and support she needed to keep her family together. Y ” In addition to participating in the YSB’s program at no charge, Ida Mae and her grandchildren also received Y memberships, which provided them with a place to go – a welcoming, affirming place where they all felt part of something larger. Where they all felt part of a family. That family atmosphere helped restore bonds between Ida Mae and her grandchildren. With their Y memberships - made possible through YSB - Ida Mae’s grandchildren now have something to look forward to every day. “They didn’t have a place like this to go to before,” she says. Ida Mae and her grandkids worked with YSB to develop a customized plan that helped address their current problems and prevent future conflicts, creating a stronger, more connected family unit in the process. “I feel a lot of love from these kids now,” she says. “I think we’re gonna make it. I think we’re gonna be just fine.” The Y is here day-in and day-out to provide the resources our community needs to address the most pressing social issues: child welfare, education and community health. We work to offer every child and family what they need to achieve their best. 2013 HIGHLIGHTS Y ON THE FLY PROGRAM: Designed to provide safe, structured physical activity for youth in under served areas by taking the activity to them, this program reached 10 local neighborhoods. The 9 week program served over 1,000 children ages 2-16 in over 110 hours of physical activity and also served 1,000 healthy snacks. VOLUNTEERISM & GIVING: In 2013, our Annual Campaign raised over $363,000 that went directly to help members and program participants who need financial assistance to access the Y. With 2,190 volunteers who help run programs from A to Z — like Athletics to Advocacy, Dance classes to Disease prevention, Volleyball to Volunteerism— we don’t just strengthen individuals, we strengthen our entire community. PIONEERING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES: The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne was selected to participate in the Statewide Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC). This program addresses the childhood obesity epidemic by convening state and community leaders to implement strategies that support healthy living. YMCA GOOD FRIDAY BREAKFAST: Former Ohio State Buckeye, NFL standout and renowned ESPN sports analyst Chris Spielman was the featured speaker at the eighth annual YMCA Good Friday Breakfast which hosted 367 guests. Chris shared his experiences of joy and suffering through faith as his family faced his wife’s 11 year battle against breast cancer. 2,190 of our friends, neighbors and community leaders donated their time, energy and talent as volunteers for the Y’s cause. $1.2 MILLION was provided in financial assistance, ensuring that our programs and resources are accessible for all. 16,703 people were directly impacted by the YMCA through program and membership financial assistance. 352 community members were trained in CPR, first aid, lifeguarding and other life-saving courses. 2013 DONOR RECOGNITION THANK YOU TO OUR 2013 SUPPORTERS!
