MESSAGE
FROM CHARLES & SUE...
Have you ever taken
something old and
transformed it into
something refreshingly
new? That’s what is
happening at our Grosse
Pointe War Memorial.
From our website to our food, from our classes to
our ballroom, and from our spirit of service to our
youth dances – all changing into something that
our community can be proud of and excited about!
Sue and I are delighted to let you know about a
few “refresh” highlights for you to share with your
neighbors and friends.
First, we are excited to announce our new Friday
in the GP, an additional feature to our traditional
Middle School Dances, otherwise known as War
Dances. After parents drop their children off, many
then head out to find something to do. Starting
in January, parents can stay on the GPWM
campus and enjoy an evening of eclectic music in
the unmistakable ambiance of the Alger House,
steps away--but separate--from the youthful
energy in our ballroom. Parents can enjoy the cozy
feel of our historic home and unwind after a busy
week, knowing that their children are
near-by having a great time.
Sue and I are also thrilled to share our plans
for a refreshed and re-imagined ballroom. The
meals we prepare, the service we provide and the
facilities that surround our guests are all getting
significant upgrades. We want your experience
here to match the breathtaking view outside our
windows. Please make sure to check our website
for more details, or feel free to drop in and see
something old transformed into something new.
Speaking of the website—that’s new, too.
Launched in mid-October, the new site is
cleaner and easier to navigate, with more useful
information. But perhaps the most important
change is that it now allows you to register for
classes and events online! A great option for our
busy patrons. Visit www.gpwarmemorial.org--we
think you’ll like what you see.
We would like to thank everyone for your
continued support of the GPWM – our goal is to
exceed your expectations in everything we do.
Visit us online or in person – and, welcome home
to your Grosse Pointe War Memorial.

Jeantini
Hot tacos, salty drinks
and cool amigos
mingled at our Jeantini,
a special gathering in
the courtyard of the
Alger House for the
community’s young
movers and shakers on
September 17. More
than 100 came out to
enjoy gourmet food
truck cuisine, cool
margaritas, sizzling salsa music, and photo booth fun on
a beautiful fall evening. Join us on February 25 for our
next Jeantini, sure to beat the winter doldrums with a

$250,000 Bequest from
the Estate of Robert E. Beck D.D.S.
Pictured is Don Berschback, Beck’s
attorney, presenting a check to Burke
as War Memorial Board Chair Susan
Davies looks on.
The Grosse Pointe War Memorial is the grateful recipient of a bequest in the
amount of $250,000 from the estate of Robert E. Beck D.D.S. Beck, who died
in June, was a dentist and businessman in the Grosse Pointe area for many
years and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
“We’re so very appreciative of Dr. Beck’s generosity and his desire to give
back to the community in this way,” said War Memorial President and
CEO Charles Burke. The donation will go toward the War Memorial’s
endowment fund.
Expert Hospitality Professionals
Join GP War Memorial
Special events at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial are becoming even
more spectacular with two experts from the hospitality industry
heading up our dining experience. Angelo Loria joins as executive
chef and Amanda Slomski joins as senior director of food, beverage
and sales. Loria is an exceptionally innovative executive chef who
was executive chef at the Fox Theatre for three years. Slomski comes
to the War Memorial from New York City where she was director of
suites and catering for Legends Hospitality at Yankee Stadium and was
hand-selected to be part of the opening team for the new stadium.
Veterans Advocate Gives Inspirational Talk
Retired Army Capt. Sam Brown, a nationally recognized advocate for
wounded warriors, gave a compelling presentation about his
experiences on and off the battlefield at the War Memorial on Oct. 21.
Brown, who was injured while serving in Afghanistan in 2008,
spoke about how the community can come together to welcome
home veterans and help them reintegrate. He also spoke about leading
through service. The audience was truly engaged and FOX 2 Detroit
covered the event on its evening news program.

DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER
A BOOK BY ALLAN KNEE
BY MARC CAMOLETTI
ADAPTED BY ROBIN HAWDON
All your favorite characters from Louisa May Alcott’s
classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel appear on the stage,
singing and dancing. It focuses on four sisters at home in
Massachusetts, while the family patriarch is away serving as
a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War.
Don’t Dress for Dinner is a funny, two-act farce that takes
place in and around Paris and abounds with classic mistaken
identities, mistresses and wives, Chanel fur coats, death
threats and a fancy French cook, Suzette, who is full of moxey.
You’ll be laughing at this play long after the lights come up.
