The Fourth Sunday in Advent
St Peter’s Cathedral is a Christ-centred, sacramental, inclusive, thinking, mission-oriented,
faith community. The Cathedral resides on the lands of the Kaurna people whom we
acknowledge as the original custodians of the Adelaide Region.
Welcome: “In the sixth month the angel…” These evocative
words mark the beginning of Mary’s story and the start of
Luke’s nativity narrative. As we listen to them on the fourth
Sunday of Advent they remind us of a young woman who
said “Yes” to God. It is a brave, some would say naïve, thing
to do – saying yes to God. That is what Christians are called
to do: to say yes and then go out and make a difference to the
world. Mother Teresa encouraged her sisters to ‘do something
beautiful for God today.’
We need lots of beautiful things in our country reeling after last Monday’s
tragedy in Sydney. The ‘I’ll ride with you’ hashtag is one such, intentionally
reaching out to people different to us and embracing them as part of the human
race. This surely is part of the message we will celebrate in the birth of the Prince
of Peace.

Today is the fourth Sunday in Advent.
We light a candle each week to remind us that Jesus brings
light into the dark places of the world.
Child
We light the candle of hope to proclaim that God’s light is
coming into the world.
The first candle (purple) is lit

We light the candle of peace to proclaim that God’s
promises will be fulfilled in the birth of Jesus – Prince of Peace.

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

Community Notices
Cathedral Kids: Children of all ages, and parents, are welcome to join the Cathedral
Kids’ program during the 10:30am service in the Cynthia Poulton Hall. Children are
invited to follow the Gospel procession down the aisle to the altar where their cross
will be collected, and then go to the Cynthia Poulton Hall for Cathedral Kids.
Children will be supervised by Louise, Amanda & Jecinta. Alternatively, children
are welcome to remain in the Cathedral with parents, or may use the children’s area
on the left side.
Newcomers: To join the Cathedral community, fill in a newcomers leaflet and either hand
it to a steward, place it in the offertory bags or return it to the Cathedral Office.
Toilets are in the Cathedral Close, across the car park from the Cathedral.
Hearing Aid: If you wear a hearing aid, please sit on the left side of the Cathedral and
set your aid to T position to make use of the audio loop.
Changing Service times
Christmas Eve: This year’s Christmas Eve Midnight Eucharist will start at 11.00pm.
There will be no reserved seating this year, so please plan to arrive early for a front
pew.
Evensong in 2015: On Sunday 4 January evening services will begin an hour earlier at
6.00pm. This new earlier starting time will enable young trebles to get home earlier,
and events to happen more easily following Evensong.
Memorial Flowers: The beautiful flowers at the high altar for the Christmas services
will be in memory of Anne Kidman and Kate Abel Smith.
Flowers at the Nave Altar will be in memory of Joan Grotto (given by Ossy Grotto).
The Advent Wreath:
Each year we have an Advent wreath as part of our preparations
for Christmas, lighting a new candle each week. The Advent
wreath is usually circular (symbolising eternity) and evergreen
(representing hope and renewal). Four candles, one for each
Sunday of Advent, (referred to as the candles of hope, peace, joy,
and love) surround the central Christ candle, representing the
light of God coming into the world.
Christian Meditation: The Wednesday evening meditation group is in recess until
the last week in January. The first gathering for 2015 is on Wednesday 28 January
in the John Dunn Room.
