Our cover this spring was painted by one of our CCC
Community Education students, Gwen Nickerson. She painted
this picture during the Watercolor class this last fall. While she
was painting, I asked her if we could use her painting on the
cover of the Spring catalog. Her response was “But it’s not done
yet?” I told her it didn’t matter if she finished it or not, it was a
reflection of who she is and what she was trying to do.
The painting simple spoke to me. I’ve never had that truly
happen before so even I was surprised. When I look at this
painting I see peacefulness and tranquility. Something everyone
needs a little more of these days. I’m glad that Gwen agreed to share this with us and
even if she never finishes the painting, I for one have enjoyed her work. She also inspires
me to try new things or get back to being creative with my hobbies.
Creating something through painting, crafting or scrap booking is a wonderful relief for
stress and gives you some time to regroup. There are several classes this spring that will
open doors to creativity for you. Explore art journaling or paint majestic mountains. Try
your hand at watercolor like Gwen or give quilting a try. Check out our Pinterest Inspired
classes turn something Old into Something New. There are plenty of ways to discover
your creative side.

Art Journaling is your passport to
“freedom of expression”. Art Journaling is

There are no rules.... It’s all about selfexpression.... Words and images on paper.
You can’t draw, you say? Well, there is no
need... You can use collage, stamps, photos,

Tai Chi
Often referred to as meditation in motion,
tai chi (TIE-CHEE) promotes serenity through
gentle, fluid movements. Each posture flows
into the next without pause, ensuring that
your body is in constant motion. Tai chi is low
impact and puts minimal stress on muscles
and joints, making it generally safe for all
ages and fitness levels. Tai chi is inexpensive,
requires no special equipment, and can be
done indoors or out, either alone or in a
group. This class will introduce participants
to the Short Yang Form which consists of 37
postures. The first one third of the postures
will be taught. A brief period of meditation
will conclude each class. Sweatpants and
sweatshirts suggested. Paul Powell began
teaching himself tai chi fifteen years ago
when it was recommended for rehabilitation
after knee surgery. He has been a committed
student ever since and wishes to share his

A green leaf at the end of a description identifies “3C
Initiative” classes that include an element or focus on
sustainability. The following 3C Initiative classes are offered
this semester.
Central Community
3C Initiative
College cares about our
water, energy, land use,
natural and built (humanGreen Today . . . Greener Tomorrow
made) environment,
and community health. For our communities and
ultimately the world at large, we believe environmental
sustainability is important, and is connected to social and
economic sustainability. At CCC we define environmental
sustainability as meeting “the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their own needs” (1987 Brundtland report). Our “3C
Initiative” is our collective efforts across CCC to build the
culture, knowledge and practices for a sustainable future.
Join us in this important journey.
