God will “establish a house for you,” “raise up your heir” and “make his kingdom firm.” Paul celebrates just how unexpectedly wide and welcoming that house and kingdom will be. Faith and redemptive love are no longer limited to Israel but “made known to all nations.” Gabriel greets Mary by first announcing that the promises made to David will be fulfilled through the child Mary will bear. But then Gabriel declares what prophets only hinted at in veiled images, what no human power could ever accomplish, however vast its empire, however deep its science: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.” But there is more! Through Mary’s embrace of her mission, the Incarnation mystery (God becoming a human being) engages us! Because we are baptized into Jesus, Mary’s Son, we too become Mary’s spiritual children. God seeks our cooperation in the ongoing fulfillment of God’s saving plan. Amazing grace! To build the Kingdom, God relies not on King David’s worldly power based in palace splendor, nor even Zechariah’s priestly worship in the temple’s liturgical beauty. Instead, God chooses the “marginalized,” one not only “ordinary” but powerless, indeed seemingly insignificant—“a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.” And God chooses us. Fr. Gérard J.S. Paluch PRAYER OF THE WEEK Faithful and loving God, you keep your promises from of old. Graciously hear these our prayers and grant them according to your will, through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, whose coming we await and whose day is near. POPE FRANCIS’ INTENTIONS FOR DEC. Christmas, hope for humanity: That the birth of the Redeemer may bring peace and hope to all people of good will. Parents: That parents may be true evangelizers, passing on to their children the precious gift of faith. QUESTION OF THE WEEK How might God, who changed the world through David’s life, bestowed revelation through Israel’s history, and even took flesh in Mary’s body, be able to use me to do what? For whom? PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Please pray for the following priests this week: Dec 21 Rev. Francis Benedict, O.S.B., St. Andrew's Abbey, Valyermo Dec 22 Rev. LETTER FROM FATHER BILL As you may know, I have been living in Leisure World, Seal Beach, since my retirement in July of this year. Since then I have been commuting to St. John Eudes on the weekends to celebrate Mass and provide the administration of other sacraments. After much prayer and reflection, I have decided that as of December 24, Christmas Eve, I will no longer be able to come to St. John Eudes for that purpose. I am most grateful for all of the support you have given me during my time here. I am also very thankful for the appreciation you showed me at my retirement party at the end of June. I will always treasure the time I have been able to serve you. In the future I will be working on weekends at another parish much closer to my home in Seal Beach. I ask you to keep me in your prayers and I will do the same for you. Gratefully, Fr. DID YOU KNOW? Tips for choosing safe toys for kids Millions of toys are out there, and hundreds of new ones hit the stores each year. Toys are supposed to be fun and are an important part of any child's development. But each year, scores of kids are treated in hospital emergency departments for toyrelated injuries. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when toy-shopping: Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant. Stuffed toys should be washable. Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint. Art materials should say nontoxic. Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they've been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
