The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
Saint John Eudes
November 9, 2014
Father Gérard’s Corner
“Mother and Head of All the Churches of the City and of the World”. This inscription proclaims the
Lateran Basilica’s pre-eminence as cathedral church of the bishop of Rome, the pope. Our “communion,”
our unity in faith, as a diocese and parish with the Church of Rome and with the worldwide Catholic
Church prompts the celebration of today’s dedication anniversary (original church 324; rebuilt 1726)
in every Roman Catholic place of worship throughout the world, from grandest cathedral to remotest
mission.
The water Ezekiel sees is, of course, God’s creation and gift. But its life-giving streams flow from the temple (through the
Church) to rejuvenate a parched earth whose fountains of wisdom, life, hope, and love have stagnated. “Wherever the
river flows,” trees blossom with nourishing fruit and healing leaves, recalling the Church’s long service as God’s instrument
in every corner of the world, and our baptismal challenge to become “the temple of God.”
We are such “living temples” because Jesus is God’s temple, raising up those baptized into his death. Thus, while we
honor our churches as “sacred spaces” dedicated to the worship of God and service of neighbor, the living Church is
the holy people of God (Compendium, 153–160). Since November’s liturgy recalls Christ’s coming as judge, his cleansing of
the temple is an appropriate Gospel today, reminding us of our continual need of purification, lest we become a
“marketplace” cluttered with the traffic of worldly profit and gain, rather than the holy dwelling place of God’s Spirit.
Fr. Gérard

PRAYER OF THE WEEK
Almighty God,
we seek to worship you in spirit and in truth.
Hear these our prayers
and graciously grant them
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
How do I edify others (“edify” from the Latin “to build”) by
my witness as a “living stone” fitted into the structure of
God’s holy temple, the Church?

PARISH THANKSGIVING DINNER
Dear Parishioners,
As we look forward to Thanksgiving we are mindful of the
many blessings we have received this year. As a parish,
we have a commitment to welcome all through the heart
of Jesus living in Mary with hearts full of compassion.
We are called to be a caring community that is hospitable
and there is no better time than Thanksgiving to come
together, break bread and celebrate the unique gifts each
of us brings to this parish.
I invite you to join me, Fr. Carlos, and our Eudist seminarians
and the parish staff for a free, traditional Thanksgiving
dinner on the Friday before Thanksgiving, November 21,
at 6:30 PM in Grill Hall. I hope that many of you can
attend. Space in Grill Hall is limited to 300 persons so
reservations will be required no later than November 19.
We will not be able to accommodate anyone without a
reservation.
Volunteers will be available after each Mass on the
weekend of November 15 and 16 to take your reservation.
You may also call the Parish office at (818) 341-3680.
Be sure to indicate how many will be attending. If you
would like to bring bread and wine for your table, please
do so and there will be a special blessing.
In Christ,
Fr. Gérard

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
Lord Jesus, once you called the first disciples in order to
make them fishers of men. Continue to let resound today
Your sweet invitation: "Come and follow me." Grant to
young men and young women the grace of responding
promptly to Your voice. Sustain our bishops, priests and
consecrated souls in their apostolic work. Give perseverance to our seminarians and to all those who are fulfilling
an ideal of a life of total consecration to Your service. Enkindle in our communities a missionary zeal. Send Lord,
workers into Your fields and do not let mankind be lost
because of a lack of pastors, missionaries and people
dedicated to the cause of the Gospel.
Mary, Mother of the Church, Model of Vocations, help us
say "Yes to the Lord Who calls us to collaborate in the
Divine Design of Salvation." Amen.

to ensure their own safety. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles
currently offers the following age-appropriate prevention
programs for children: VIRTUS® Teaching Touching
Safety; Good-Touch/Bad-Touch®; Archdiocese of Los

All these programs encourage parent involvement in
reinforcing what their children learn by providing parent
