On Thursday, December 4, new SCRD Board of Directors took their oaths of office. The Board is made up of eight directors, one from each Electoral Area and member municipality. Electoral Area Directors are elected for a fouryear term; and Municipal Directors from the Town of Gibsons, the District of Sechelt, and Sechelt Indian Government District, are appointed by their councils. After nominations were called, Garry Nohr was declared Board Chair and Frank Mauro, ViceChair, both by acclamation. In his acceptance speech, Garry Nohr welcomed the new Board members and presented a list of priorities. Some of these priorities include, to build on relations with the Sechelt First Nation and to sign a protocol agreement with the Squamish Nation and work together on land and marine issues which are common to both governments; work on keeping taxes down in the upcoming budget; work with other local governments on Regional Economic Development in order to bring economic stability to the region; to continue to work on improvements for solid waste management; and continue to support food producers in the region to improve the amount of locally grown food. Dog Licenses are Now Available for Purchase Dog licenses for 2015 are now available for purchase at the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD), at 1975 Field Road, Sechelt, Gibsons and Area Community Centre at 700 Park Road, Gibsons, and the Sechelt Aquatic Centre at 5500 Shorncliffe Avenue, Sechelt. The SCRD encourages responsible pet ownership through licensing, public education and enforcement. Licenses for spayed or neutered dogs are only $15 while a license for an unaltered dog is $35. A dog license helps protect pets by providing an easy-to-identify dog tag and registration with the SCRD. Licensing a dog is one of the easiest ways for the SCRD to re-unite a lost dog with their owner. To make licencing more convenient they will now be available for purchase at two new locations. This will give owners the ability to purchase their dog’s license on weekends and after regular working hours. Dogs found running at large can be impounded and taken to the Sunshine Coast Branch of the BC SPCA located at 4376 Solar Road, off Field Road in Sechelt, where the dog will be cared for until it is collected by its owner. Impoundment fees for spayed or neutered dogs start at $30, and for unaltered dogs, the fee starts at $50. The SCRD provides dog control services in Halfmoon Bay, Roberts Creek, Elphinstone, West Howe Sound and to the Sechelt Indian Government District. The Town of Gibsons and the District of Sechelt provide dog control services to citizens living in those municipalities. Seniors purchasing a dog license receive a 50% discount. Licences purchased after January 31 double in price. For more information, visit www.scrd.ca/DogControl or call 604-885-6817.
