CLASS ACTS DELIVER
That is it for Pointing until after
Christmas but were we certainly
treated to some classy performances
over the weekend.
Racing took place on a Saturday for
the first time this season courtesy of
the Hursley Hambledon at Larkhill
and those in attendance were not
disappointed. The former chasers
Quinz and Aerial landed the Club
Members Conditions and Mens Open
races respectively, whilst Current
Event made a winning seasonal
reappearance in the Ladies Open.
Quinz made an ideal start to life
between the flags for the Hill family
with son Joe riding his first winner
since returning from injury for his
father Alan. Aerial also made a smooth
transition from life under Rules to
Point-to-Pointing for Jack Barber,
providing the current Leading
Gentleman rider, Will Biddick, with
the first leg of a double on the day.
Rose Loxton only has two horses in
training at the moment but Current
Event ensured her first runner of the
season was a winning one. Bryony
Frost replaced Megan Nicholls in the
plate and survived a heart-stopping
scare to steer her mount to a sixth
consecutive win in Points.

On Sunday, the Point-to-Point season
got underway in the North with the
Ratcheugh Racing Club at Alnwick Ockey De Neulliac was the star name
on show. He went one better than on
his seasonal reappearance last season
by taking the Ladies Open in the
hands of regular pilot Catherine
Walton.
The high-class hunter Cottage Oak
made the long trip from Joe O’Shea’s
Cheshire base hoping to go one better
than his second-placed effort at
Barbury the week before. However, he
had to settle for the minor honours
once again as The Falklander took the
glory. The ex-Henry Daly inmate
made it back-to-back wins in Mens
Open at Alnwick having scored at the
West Percy last January, and could
easily have an unblemished record of
3-3 but for a fall at Corbridge in
between.
Nick Orpwood was the man on board
and he was following up victory in the
previous race, the Open Maiden, when
he partnered Crazy Diamond to
success, again getting the better of a
Joe O’Shea-trained runner; this time it
was Way Over who just came up short.
At the day’s other meeting, the
Cornwall Hunt Club at Wadebridge, it
was the ever-popular Byerley Bear who

mirrored Sagalyrique’s achievements a
fortnight ago by winning the same
race for the third season running,
extending his unbeaten course record
to six.
Elsewhere, Double Bank recaptured
the form he showed during the
2012/13 season with victory in the
Mens Open for keeper Emma Oliver
and jockey Mervyn Woodward,
bagging his third Open victory of his
career. Raffa followed up victory in the
Restricted at Black Forest Lodge to
take the Intermediate in the hands of
John Mathias.
Back to the future now and a further
reminder to all owners and keepers
that entries for the Cambridgeshire
Harriers Hunt Club (Cottenham) and
the Harkaway Club (Chaddesley
Corbett) close with us at 12.30pm this
Thursday (18th).

Are you from a racing background?
Yes, very much so. Mum and dad both
rode in Points. Mum rode nine
winners and dad rode a couple of
hundred. Their parents were also very
much involved in Pointing too.
What was your first ride in public?
30th January 2010 at Horseheath on
an ultimate schoolmaster called Good
Vintage who carried me round to
finish 3rd.
First winner – name of the horse,
owner & trainer, the date & the
course: My first winner was on the
same day I had my first ride. Inishturk
trained by dad and owned by David
and Lucy Gibbon who have turned
out to be great supporters of me and
have provided me with plenty of
winners over the past few seasons,
especially last season.

Is there a ride you look back on
and think “could have done
better?” There are lots of rides I look
back on and think I could have done
better but one that stands out is
getting beat on Volcan Surprise at
High Easter last season in his first
Open. He won me five races, but it
should have been six and I let him
down that day!
For which trainers/owners do you
mainly ride? I mainly ride for
Caroline Fryer. Without the backing of
her fantastic team I wouldn't be where
I am today and I hope we can
continue our partnership for many
seasons to come.
Who has been most influential on
your riding career so far? My parents
have definitely been the most
influential on my career because
without them I would never have had
the chance to get into Pointing. Mum
is definitely my biggest supporter and
believes in me 100%. Harry (Skelton,
my boyfriend) has also helped me a
lot, especially in the last couple of
seasons with the way I ride. We always
come home from racing and watch the
races back and he points me in the
right direction of what I'm doing right
and wrong! It's the only way you learn.
Which are your favourite courses?
And for what reasons? Marks Tey is
a fantastic track but sadly it's
struggling to keep going because of
lack of funding! A big galloping track
with lovely fences, I always seem to be
able to get into a lovely rhythm round
there and never seem to have to be in
a rush. It's perfect for big babies.
What car do you drive? VW Golf.
Name your perfect night in and
perfect night out: A perfect night in
would be a Chinese/Indian takeaway
watching X Factor. Perfect night out
would be anywhere with a good group
of friends and good food. Point-toPoint Awards Dinners and balls are
always good fun!
Where do you like to go on
holiday? Last year we went to a lovely
part of Majorca called Port Soller, but
really anywhere that's hot and I don't
have to see a horse for a week!
Who would be your ideal travelling
companions to the races? Anyone
that offers to drive. I like to have a
sleep on the way to the races,
especially if it's been an
early start!
Apart from the first winner,
what has been your most
memorable ride? My most
memorable ride would have to
be riding a winner at
Cheltenham for Paul
Nicholls on Rebel de
Maquis, and also having a
spin around the Aintree Fox
Hunters. Gina and I jumped
the last upsides, we were tailed off
but we didn't care as we were just
happy to get round. It scared the life

What music are you currently
listening to? I'm not massively into
music but anything in the top 40.
What are your favourite films and
TV programmes? My favourite film
would have to be Bridesmaids - it's
hilarious! I just hope we don't have
any incidents like they do in the film
while being (my sister) Gina's
bridesmaid! I also love the soaps Emmerdale, Corrie and Eastenders
Who are your biggest heroes in
racing? A. P. McCoy. There is no one
else like him and there never will be.
Which particular horse (in any
discipline) would you like to ride?
Any top show horse. I would love to
ride at the Horse of the Year Show
one day.
Apart from race-riding, in what
other sports do you participate? I
don't have time for any other sports!
Do you have any regrets in your
riding career to date? You can't have
regrets in racing. You have to take
each day as it comes and if you have a
bad day you just have to move on and
be grateful you're in one piece
hopefully!
What ambitions do you have in
racing? I would love to ride more
winners than the boys in a season. But
more realistically to pick up some
decent rides in the big amateur races
like the Foxhunters etc. Also to ride
against the pros and not stick out like
an amateur!
Are there any changes that you
think would benefit the sport in the
future? I think our sport is in a great
place at the moment with lots of great
sponsors. There are always things that
need improving but as long as
everyone is having fun and enjoying
Pointing surely that's what it's all
about!
What are your aspirations for the
season? To stay safe and hopefully
regain my title. I've got it now and
don't want to let it go to anyone else!
Although I know I will have another
fight on my hands with so many very
good ladies riding now.
Can you give us a horse to look out
for this season? Royale's Charter who
was in training with Nick Williams and
now with Caroline (Fryer). He should
be a strong force in Ladies races and I
know Caroline is very excited about
running him!
Can you give us an up and coming
rider to look out for this season?
Kate Gowing and Jack (my brother).
They are both young and
inexperienced but with a bit of help
and some nice rides I think they can
turn into successful jockeys. I'm sure
they will both be keen to win their area
Novice Riders titles.
If you were on an island and could
only bring three things, what would
you bring? I would take Bertie my
dog, chocolate, and my phone!
And finally, sum up Point-toPointing in one word: It's not one
word, but amateur madness!

DECEMBER
Catherine Walton had been marooned
on 49 Point-to-Point winners since
Easter Monday, but she brought up
her half-century at Alnwick on Ockey
De Neulliac, who had been her
winning partner on that April day.
Catherine, 27, opened her account on
Be A Better Boy at Mosshouses in
#gopointing
2006, and she has also recorded 18
successes under National Hunt rules
and nine on the flat.
had already enjoyed a spin over
hurdles at Carlisle, finishing fourth on
Oxilado.
She has been Northern area champion
for the past four seasons, and she
currently rides out for Mark Johnston.
Sam, who celebrated his sixteenth
birthday on November 25, took the
Club Members' race on Darsi Dancer,
owned by his father, Selkirk-based
trainer Stuart Coltherd.
Alnwick was also the venue for the
initial success of Sam Coltherd on his
debut between the flags, although he

DANNY BURTON

Danny Burton's start to the season has
been less than productive, with three
non-completions from as many rides,
but the former Conditional is optimistic
about the campaign ahead, with
support from several yards, including
those of Mary Tory and Ed Walker.
Danny has hunting and racing in his
genes. His grandfather was huntsman
to the Tedworth for 20 years - now in
his eighties, he continues to ride with
the field - while his father Gerald, who
enjoyed success in the saddle, still trains
Pointers.
It was on his grandfather's Tomfoolary
that Danny had his first ride in 2005,
and the following year he opened his
account on Let's Fly at Trebudannon.
In 2008, the same year in which his
brother Wayne was paralysed from the
chest down in a fall at Exeter, he turned
Conditional, and partnered 16 winners
in the paid ranks, with the highlight
being victory in the 2010 Hands &
Heels series.

Finding his enjoyment of racing on the
wane, a situation obviously not helped
when he fractured the C7 vertebra in
his neck in 2011, he handed in his
licence and left racing altogether for a
year. "I trained a as a tree surgeon, and
worked as a Sainsbury's delivery driver anything to keep some money coming
in," he explained.
Although he was no longer involved in
racing, he began to combine his driving
job with riding out for Michael Blake,
and with his confidence in the saddle
returning, he acceded to his father's
request to make a comeback as an
amateur to partner his Point-toPointers.
A winner for Gerald in 2013 was
followed by a couple for Ed Walker last
season, and Danny returned to working
in racing full-time when he joined the
Alan King yard in February. He can
comfortably do 9st12lbs and has toyed
with the idea of reverting to
professional status, but as he is now 28

the decision would be irreversible, as he
would no longer be classed as a
Conditional rider.
"Anyway, I'd like to be riding every
weekend, and there's more chance of
that if I stay Point-to-Pointing," he
admitted. He is hoping for ten winners
between the flags this season, and one
goal definitely within reach is that of
losing his 7lb claim under Rules, as he
needs just two more successes to reach
the required target of 20.
He is currently looking for a sponsor,
and as he has renewed ties with his
former agent, Yorkshire-based Russ
James, reasons he should be able to
display any advertising logos further
afield than just his local area.
Meanwhile, he is keeping his fingers
crossed that his season will kick-start at
Larkhill on Saturday, when possible
rides are Bedrock Fred in the Men's
Open and Conigre in the Maiden.

Who was capturing the action last weekend?
Larkhill’s first ever December meeting
took place on Saturday courtesy of the
Hursley Hambledon meeting and
West Country Videos were present
to record the six-race card, whilst
there was no shortage of
photographers to capture the stills
thanks to Julie Drewett, Tim Holt
and Phil Britt.
Sunday saw action spreading the
length of the country with the
Cornwall Hunt Club at Wadebridge
and the Ratcheugh Racing Club at
Alnwick. West Country Videos made
a second appearance of the weekend
at Wadebridge, where Tim Holt was
also in attendance for his second
meeting of the weekend to cover the
photography.
Grace Beresford, as ever, was on
hand with her camera at the opening
meeting in the Northern Area at the
picturesque Alnwick, where she was
joined by Keith Simpson who was
there to record all the action.

There may have been only three
runners in the Hursley Hambledon
Members' race at the weekend, but
those watching cannot fail to have been
impressed by the copybook race ridden
on the winner Billesley Road by Ciaran
Gethings.
Now aged 20 - the victory came just
two days before he left his teen years
behind - Ciaran was scoring his tenth
success between the flags to go with
one under Rules. That one came at the
end of November at Newbury on
Woodford County, trained by Philip
Hobbs, at whose yard the jockey has
worked for three years, while his first
Point-to-Point victory had come on
Just Hattie at Black Forest Lodge in
2013.
Before the age of 12 he was riding out
for Philip Rothwell, for whom his
father sometimes worked as a driver. "I
#gopointing
weighed about five stone, and was
always getting run away with," he
grinned, "but I was treated very well,
and the head lad Mick Jordan was a
great help."
He enjoys leading up at the races, and
recently won a turnout prize for his
charge. "It took me an hour to plait
up," he admitted, "but it was worth it
when I won £100!"
The first horse he ever cantered was the
Rothwell-bred Twocute, so memories
were rekindled when, last season, he
found himself in opposition to his old
partner in a Novice Riders' contest at
Cothelstone, an encounter in which the
Irishman came out on top by a
considerable distance!
Ciaran rides the Cheltenham Festival
winner Fingal Bay every day, and
another regular mount at Sandhills is
Gas Line Boy, on whom he finished
eighth in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir
Chase in March. He can comfortably
do ten stone, and is hoping to turn
Conditional in due course, but stresses
he will remain in the amateur ranks at
least until the end of the 2014/15
campaign.
At 15 he did a 42-week course at the
Irish Racing School, which he described
as "brilliant." The downside was a
feeling of homesickness, even though
he was not too far from his roots, but
he had no hesitation in making the
move to England for more
opportunities.

Having had experience of Cheltenham,
he is hoping that he might pick up a
ride in the Aintree Fox Hunters', while
his modest Pointing aim is to better the
six winners he recorded last season.

5 MINUTES WITH LIZZIE LUXTON
“Kilworthy is my hunt meeting, it's a
super viewing track and I've been
there since I was tiny. I’d love to
train a winner there.”
For how long have you been
training? I have trained for 3 seasons.
Where are you based? Lifton in
Devon, very close to the old 'Jays
Bridge' Point-to-Point course.
Do you combine training with
another job or profession? As well as
training Pointers, I event in the
summer.
What training facilities do you have
available? We have a sand school, all
year round turnout and schooling
fences. It’s a short enough drive to
Dartmoor to canter, and my lovely
neighbours let me use their land as
well!
How many horses do you train? 3
this season (although I’d love more!)
Are you from a racing background?
Yes, my mum trained Pointers with
success; dad (a farrier) loves it and
owns shares in two I train. My late
aunty, Yvonne Watson, trained and I
helped her to rehome two of her
thoroughbreds before she sadly passed
away in March.
What was your first winner? I
haven't had one yet, but I'm looking
forward to the party when I do!
Of which horse performance(s) are
you most proud? I trained a
homebred mare for my dad two
seasons ago. She was backed by me; I
took her hunting and did everything
with her. She was showing plenty of
promise as a five- year-old when she
very sadly broke her shoulder in a fall
at Upcott Cross. I was massively proud
#gopointing
of her and she will always have a place
in my heart.
Did you race-ride before you
started training? Yes and I rode a
winner on my third ride at Upcott
Cross on Jay Jay Valentine, trained by
my boss Jackie Du Plessis. I broke my
collar bone in a bad fall at Larkhill,
and thanks to Oaksey House I was
back race riding within five weeks but
I never fully enjoyed after that so I
stopped before I had another big
crash!
How did you start training and who
has been most influential on your
training career? It's been a natural
progression - I worked for Jackie du
Plessis and she is a massive help. I
have so much respect for her.
What do you do to take a break
from training – any hobbies or
favourite holiday destinations?
Hunting is a massive passion, all my
racehorses hunt come rain or shine. I
recently visited Abu Dhabi with my
friend Charlotte Rowe (who also trains
and events)!
Who would be your ideal travelling
companions to the races? Gerry
Supple and Ash Farrant... They're a
hilarious pair!
Who are your biggest heroes – in or
out of racing? In the sport, Henrietta
Knight, and outside it has to be Chris
Hoy.
What has been your funniest
incident at the races? A mare I
trained last year bit me very hard on

the shoulder whilst tacking up. While
this may not seem funny she was so
easy at all times it was massively out of
the blue!
Which particular horse would you
like to train – in Points and under
Rules? Mendip Express.
If you hadn’t taken up training,
what would you have done instead?
Hunt every day of the week!!!
Which horses do you have at the
moment that you would say have
good potential? All are nice, mum’s
horse Strong Hurricane should go
well. One horse that I have evented to
a high level will make his debut this
season and if he stays as well as he
jumps he will be hard to go with.
What ambitions do you have in

and I've been there since I was tiny. I’d

changes in Point-to-Pointing in
recent years? I think things are
moving in the right direction - there
are still things that could be made
'better' but it's all going the right way.
