Back to business now and it was very encouraging to see so many runners at Larkhill on Sunday. Originally scheduled as a five-race card, the Larkhill Racing Club proved very popular with owners and keepers three races divided, creating an eightrace card. Each race attracted doublefigure fields with the Ladies and Mens Opens particularly well supported with 12 and 18 runners respectively. Current Event made it two from two this season in the Ladies Open with Bryony Frost doing the steering once more. This Aintree Fox Hunters target continues to show his class and won with any amount in hand to notch a seventh straight success between the flags. In the Mens feature, Quinz (3rd) was bidding to make it two from two since GOPOINTING is published by The Point-to-Point Racing Company Ltd Editor: Ben Roe t: 01933 440077 e: [email protected] Advertising: Lucy Wheeler t: 01933 440077 e: [email protected] #gopointing joining the Pointing ranks, but in a race where the first three home were all in contention jumping the last, it was Will Biddick aboard Jack Barber’s Benedictus who quickened best to take the prize. This gave the defending champion gentleman rider Will Biddick and keeper Jack Barber a double on the day after the pair teamed up to take the opening race, Division I of the Larkhill Racing Club Members Conditions, with Subtle Sovereign. This was also Biddick’s second double at the course in as many meetings. Elsewhere, racegoers were treated to a rare dead-heat in the concluding race of the afternoon, Division II of the Restricted, when the judge couldn’t split Jepeck, ridden by Jamie Thomas, and Icthec, ridden by Peter Mason. Storm Lantern was another notable winner for the Waley-Cohens, making it three wins in a row (two this season) by taking Division II of the Larkhill Racing Club Members Conditions. It is hoped that there will be enough children who are interested to enter a special race at the Melton Hunt Club Point-to-Point in 2015. Full details of these rallies have been sent to all Pony Clubs in Area 6 and the Pytchley and Atherstone Branches. Please contact your DC for more details or email [email protected]. There #gopointing will still be the usual pony races as well at the MHC meeting. MASSIVE THANKS FROM HARKAWAY CLUB The Harkaway Club committee would like to say thank you to all of the trainers, owners, jockeys and racegoers who came along to Chaddesley Corbett on Monday. It goes without saying that your support is crucial, and it is very much appreciated. The committee would also like to thank the many volunteers who make the day possible. There are too many to name them individually, but they include our 7 Stewards, Vets and Doctors, Starters and Judges, Fence Stewards, Paddock and Weighing Room Officials, Entrance and Car Park Officials, Race Card Sellers, Farriers, Sponsors Officials, Cashiers, Drivers and the team of Horse Catchers. Our thanks are also due to the volunteers who put in a lot of work on the buildings over the summer, and who were treading in straight after the meeting. This is the start of my third season I trained Kildonnan in 2012-13 and Ockey De Neulliac in 2013-14. Where are you based? Chantry Farm, West Witton (North Yorkshire) since this summer, having trained from a barn in a field in West Witton last year. Do you combine training with another job or profession? I am one of two resident veterinary surgeons at Mark Johnston Racing full time and train the pointers in my lunch time. What training facilities do you have available? I have the use of stables in a 16 box American barn on the farm and a turnout paddock. We use Middleham Moor facilities schooling on low moor and cantering on high moor. How many horses do you train? Three this year: Ockey De Neulliac, our star from last season; Chantry Melody, a maiden mare owned by Richard (our landlord); and Lunacorn, a Flemensfirth mare out of a half-sister to Monty's Pass, who came second in an Irish maiden. Are you from a racing background? No, I trained as a veterinary surgeon and my interest in racing came as I specialised in equine veterinary surgery. My first horse, Kildonnan, broke a pedal bone at Wetherby and was going to be put down; I took him on for free, thinking he had potential in the pointing field. He proved this by winning a Ladies Open and a Carlisle Hunter Chase in our first season training. What was the first winner you sent out – name, owner, rider, date, course? It was Kildonnan in the Jedforest Ladies Open at Friars Haugh on 24th February 2013, owned by myself and ridden by Catherine Walton. Of which horse performance are you most proud? I can't choose between my three Hunter Chase winners - Kildonnan at Carlisle, and Ockey at Haydock and Cheltenham, they all mean a great deal to me and my wife Lucy. Did you race-ride before you started training? No, I have never race ridden and would not be capable of it; I ride out at home but have nothing but admiration for everyone who rides in races. How did you start training and who has been most influential on your training career? Kildonnan was trained for me by Guy and Freya Brewer when I first got him. When I changed jobs and could train myself the next year I started training Kildonnan myself. Which jockeys do you use regularly? Catherine Walton, and Henry Morshead was on my maiden at Alnwick. What car do you drive? A Toyota hilux. What kind of music do you like? A very eclectic mix of anything and everything. Describe your perfect night in and perfect night out: Night in: steak, chips, a pint of Black Sheep beer and a good film to watch with my wife. Do you train for just yourself and family or for other Owners? Myself and farrier Justin Landy have Ockey De Neulliac, Chantry Melody is Richard Sunter’s - the owner of the farm we use and Lunacorn is a syndicated mare with a few shares still available. Neil Mechie (left) with Justin Landy Photo: David Simpson #gopointing 8 www.pointtopoint.co.uk 06 January 2015 GOPOINTING TRAINER PROFILE | NEIL MECHIE “If the possibility arises in the future I might quite like to train National Hunt horses under Rules.” Night out: a good meal with friends or family at one of the several very nice restaurants in our area. What do you do to take a break from training – any hobbies or favourite holiday destinations? I love skiing but due to training commitments in the winter find it very hard to get away. Who would be your ideal travelling companions to the races? My wife, who is an essential part in our training set up giving advice, riding out and helping me at the races. I love when family and friends join us at the races for a day out. I would love to have John Francome and Martin Pipe join us just to glean their advice and analysis on the horses. Who are your biggest heroes – in or out of racing? In racing, A.P. McCoy, Ruby Walsh, Martin Pipe and Paul Nicholls. Which particular horse would you like to train – in Points or under Rules? Denman - his power and style of running mesmerised me. If you hadn’t taken up training, what would you have done instead? Had a lot of free time and money to go on holiday and enjoy the countryside in the Yorkshire Dales. Which horses do you have at the moment that you would say have good potential? Ockey de Neulliac - if he retains his form from last year has a tremendous amount of ability. What ambitions do you have in racing? Continue to enjoy my chances to train horses in Points and Hunter Chases. If the possibility arises in the future I might quite like to train National Hunt horses under Rules. What are your favourite courses and meetings - and why? Cheltenham is an exceptional course and an amazing place to go racing let alone have a winner! I love Carlisle and Haydock for the great days when I have had winners there. What do you consider to be the biggest challenges for Point-toPoint trainers? Horses trained by close associates of professional trainers on outstanding facilities, often very good ex-rules horses as well. But that is the game and if you can compete with and beat these horses you have achieved something you can be proud of. What developments do you think would benefit the sport in the future? Lighter weights to be carried in Maiden races; twelve or twelve and a half stone is a colossal weight for an inexperienced horse learning to race. They carry weights that far exceed professionally trained horses, as the old adage says weight stops trains so why make a maiden carry so much. Also from my professional point of view high weights increase stress on the horse during the race and can increase injury rates, hence when I can I run horses in ladies races where they carry less weight. Are you from a racing background? Yes. My mother Cherry Pointed a little bit and had a permit to train. She is the daughter of Mick Easterby, my grandad. What was your first ride in public? 2002 - Double Rich at Charm Park in the Restricted. I fell off 3 from home, jumped up ran back and told my mum I absolutely loved that, I want to do it again! First winner: 8th of February, 2004, on the legendary Silver Groom at Witton Castle trained by my Uncle David Easterby and owned by Kay Barron. Apart from the first winner, what has been your most memorable ride? There are lots. Amicelli winning the AGA Final race at Cheltenham, Holy Joe giving me an awesome spin around the Aintree Foxhunters to finish 3rd, but Wedger Pardy finishing third in the Cross-Country race at the Cheltenham Festival was pretty special. Is there a ride you look back on and think “could have done better?” Wedger Pardy in the Cross-Country race at Cheltenham's December meeting in 2011 (ran-out). For which trainers/owners do you mainly ride? My mother mainly, and also Uncle David. I will ride for anyone if I can. Who has been most influential on your riding career so far? My Uncle David Easterby, Grandad & my mother. We are not very good at praise in my family and I'm my worst critic. Which are your favourite courses? And for what reasons? I'm so upset we have no Whitwell-on-the-Hill anymore as that is a proper fair track! Sheriff Hutton and Charm Park are good tracks too. What car do you drive? Freddie the Ford Focus. Name your perfect night in and perfect night out: In: steak, hot bath and electric blanket. Out: good food, great friends and dancing! Where do you like to go on holiday? Hot, Hot, Hot places! Who would be your ideal travelling companions to the races? My sister Sam (aka the LinchPin) and Johnny Depp. What music are you currently listening to? Johnny Cash. What are your favourite TV programmes? Downton Abbey and Mrs Browns Boy’s. What has been either your own funniest incident, or the most amusing thing you have seen or heard at the races? Cantering to the start at the Sinnington meeting; Mark Walford said to my friend SJ Townend: "did you see anything fall off my horses head?" She looked, started screaming: "Oh my goodness his eye has fallen out!" The funny thing is, he's a one eyed horse! Who are your biggest heroes in racing? There are many. My Grandad and AP McCoy just inspires me, never to grumble when I'm in pain! Which particular horse (in any discipline) would you like to ride? Frankel looked a beast and I'd love to sit on Black Caviar! Apart from race-riding, in what other sports do you participate? My cousin Joanna has got me back into netball and I try to hunt as much as possible, I love it. Do you have any regrets in your riding career to date? No, I just learn from my mistakes. What ambitions do you have in racing? To be in one piece when I hang my boots up. Are there any changes that you think would benefit the sport in the future? Some sort of rule/restrictions on horses rated ridiculously high that have come from under Rules! What are your aspirations for the season? Ride winners and stay safe. Can you give us a horse to look out for this season? Five Piers. Can you give us an up and coming rider to look out for this season? Fi McSharry. If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring? Food, my sister Sam to look after me, and one of my cashmere jumpers in case it's cold! And finally, sum up Point-toPointing in one word: Epic. JACQUELINE COWARD A regular on the Pointing scene for over 10 years, Jacqueline is one of the busiest riders in the country. She was Leading Lady Rider in the 2012/13 season, has been runner-up twice, and has won the Yorkshire Area Leading Rider Award on no less than eight occasions #gopointing 11 Photo: Grace Beresford p2pnorthernphotos.co.uk www. www.pointtopoint.co.uk 06 January 2015 GOPOINTING Tabitha Worsley pictured at last season’s Mid Surrey Farmers Drag meeting Photo: Julie Drewett racehorsephotos.co.uk SCENE & HEARD Fakenham, New Year’s Day by Carolyn Tanner Many a comedian has begun a joke with the words "An Englishman, an Irishman, a Scotsman and a Welshman." On this occasion it was no laughing matter but described exactly the four protagonists in the Amateur Riders' Chase. It was the Irishman who came out on top, Gordon Treacy, nephew of successful jockey Tom Treacy, landing the spoils on Alright Benny for his boss Paul Henderson. Gordon, who rode between the flags in Ireland and is hoping to take out a Pointing licence here, did well to sit a couple of mistakes four and three out respectively, but the runner-up, and the only other to complete, Icy Colt, never looked like taking advantage despite Max Kendrick's best endeavours. Between them Bradley Gibbs, who is based with Tim Vaughan, and Sam Coltherd, who works for his father Stuart at Selkirk, clocked up a round trip total of approximately 1,200 miles, #gopointing but unfortunately neither got further than the seventh fence. "He might not be too impressed," smiled Harry Beswick, referring to Ben Pauling, after opening his account under Rules in the Maiden Hurdle on the Pam Sly-trained Acertain Circus. Harry, 19, works for Ben, whose own charge Baths Well was beaten into third. Harry, who recorded two Point-toPoint victories in 2014, joined the Pauling yard after a spell with Fergal O'Brien. "I was intending to stay amateur for this season to get more experience," he explained, "but it was Ben's idea that I should turn Conditional." Harry is not setting himself a definite target for the campaign, but admitted that he would like to ride another four winners in order to lose his 10lb claim before the end of the season. 12 Tabitha Worsley gave Sitting Back a positive front-running ride in the Novices' Chase, but the outsider of the four runners, owned by her mother Georgina Howell, eventually had no answer to the favourite Shinooki. Tabitha, just a few days short of her nineteenth birthday, had won a Whitfield Maiden on the now 11-yearold in May. She is at University in Birmingham, but will be returning to ride in her local South East area once the season gets under way. It has been a good few days for Michael Kehoe, who saddled the Barlow family's Brackloon High to win the Men's Open at Cottenham on December 28th. At Fakenham, it was his turn to play owner, when his Vision Du Coeur, trained by his wife Fiona, took the 3m Hurdle in the hands of Sam Jones. www.pointtopoint.co.uk 06 January 2015 GOPOINTING IN PROFILE TOMMIE O’BRIEN by Carolyn Tanner Log onto Jonjo O'Neill's website and you will find Tommie O'Brien listed as one of the yard's Conditional riders, but the Irishman has, in fact, recently been granted his amateur and Point-to-Point licences, and is looking forward to making his debut between the flags in Britain. Jackdaws Castle to ask for a job, and was invited for a trial. He turned Conditional in 2013, and his 25 rides yielded four second places. The highlight, though, was finishing fourth on Eastlake in a Class 2 Chase at Sandown. "It was great to ride at a top track like that," he enthused. The son of former jockey, and now trainer, Val O'Brien, Tommie always wanted to race-ride, and having started in pony racing he graduated to riding in Points at the age of 16. He rode as an amateur for five years, including for leading trainer Michael Hourigan, while he also wore the green and gold colours of J P McManus. With his career not working out as well as he had hoped, the change of Novice Rider status in Point-toPoints persuaded him to revert to amateur, a move to which O'Neill was happy to agree. With four successes under his belt, two apiece in Points and Bumpers, he took the step of phoning the office at #gopointing He remains as part of the trainer's team, and looks after the useful performers Get Me Out Of Here and Shutthefrontdoor, both of which he took over from his girlfriend Laura Morgan, O'Neill's travelling head girl, while one of those he rides on the 13 gallops is the giant Roc Des Champs. "He must be over 18 hands, and he's the only horse I've ever ridden that makes me look small," laughed Tommie, who despite standing at six feet tall can easily ride at just over ten stone. "I was always skinny," he smiled. He is hoping to make his Pointing debut on Laura's Minella For Steak at Sheriff Hutton, and rides out when possible at her brother Tom's yard in Leicestershire. There could also be rides in the offing for Chris and Antonia Bealby's stable, where Laura worked prior to her move to the Cotswolds. With more experience than many novice riders, Tommie is hoping he will pick up some outside rides. www.pointtopoint.co.uk 06 January 2015 GOPOINTING Max and Native Pride on their way to winning Division 1 of the Restricted race at Larkhill on Sunday Photo: Tim Holt [email protected] IN PROFILE MAX KENDRICK by Carolyn Tanner What originally looked like being a busy weekend for Max Kendrick could have ended in anti-climax, with none of his three declared rides under Rules, one at Sandown and two at Plumpton, meeting their engagements. The good news, though, was that the loss of the Sunday bookings enabled him to take the mount on the Joan Johnston-trained Native Pride at Larkhill, a ride which he had thought he would have to forgo. The sevenyear-old duly obliged, his superior jumping seeing him home. Max's interest in racing stemmed from accompanying his parents, Adam and Carolyn, to meetings, and he became a regular on the East Anglian pony circuit - "I didn't have a winner, but lots of placings," - although only at the local fixtures as opposed to competing in the Charles Owen series. Adam sadly passed away when his son was only 11, but Carolyn's involvement has continued since. She currently has a handful of horses under Rules with Ben Case, and four registered for Point-to-Pointing with his wife Sarah. As soon as he was 16 Max started Pointing, with his first ride being on #gopointing Lady Ann Lewis at Whitfield in December 2011. Three months later he opened his account on New Alco at Horseheath, and he travelled to Newmarket most mornings to ride out for the latter's trainer Tory Hayter before settling down to his studies at Felsted School. Although Carolyn insisted that he stay on to do ‘A' levels, she realised that using his qualifications, in Maths, History and Business Studies, was not an option, and as soon as he finished his education he moved into racing full time. After a summer with Giles Bravery he joined Ben Case's yard, where he has been based for over a year. He has completed a Category ‘B' course, and would eventually like to turn Conditional, but realises that he needs more experience before he makes the leap. "I'll leave it to Ben to say when I'm ready," he said. Weight is unlikely to be a problem, as he can currently ride at 9st7lbs. In addition to the guidance and encouragement he receives from his employer he is appreciative of the assistance which is forthcoming from the stable's regular riders Daryl Jacob 14 and Kielan Woods. "I can always go to them for advice and they're really helpful," he stressed. It was Daryl who suggested that Max should go to Oaksey House, where a fitness programme was devised for him. His current winning tally stands at 11 between the flags and three under Rules, but he is not setting any specific targets for the campaign ahead. "I did that last year and it didn't work out," he laughed. One he names from Ben's yard is his mother's six-year-old Ballagh, who finished second on his only British outing to the useful Different Gravey, while his judgement was proved spot on with regard to the aforementioned Native Pride, who he had assessed prerace as being "rather nice." He is riding out for other yards when time allows, and is hoping that he will be able to keep the ride on Paul Webber's charge Firm Order, the Saturday non-runner whose obvious chance was highlighted in a feature on his young rider in that day's Racing Post, welcome publicity for any amateur. www.pointtopoint.co.uk 06 January 2015 GOPOINTING IN THE FRAME Who was capturing the action at Larkhill?
