WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
Brackloon High and Andrew Barlow (near side) on their way to winning
the Mens Open race at last Sunday’s Waveney Harriers meeting

BRACKLOON ON A HIGH
I would like to begin by congratulating
the Henderson family for a superb
training performance in getting Say
No cherry ripe to claim the first
National Classic of the season – the
Lord Ashton of Hyde’s Cup – at
Cocklebarrow. Their nine-year-old
homebred is developing in to a
consistent performer at the highest
level between the flags, and with wins
over 3m4f and 3m7f on his CV, is
proving to be a very stout stayer.
Tom Weston grabbed a share of the
headlines at Heythrop with a training
double; his first winner came in the
AGA PPORA Club Members race for
Novice Riders race courtesy of
Jetnova, ridden by John SmithMaxwell, before doing the steering
himself on Thoonavolla in the 6yo+
Open Maiden.
At Higham’s Waveney Harries,
Brackloon High followed up his
impressive win at Cottenham with
another win in Open company in the
hands of Andrew Barlow. The tenyear-old is rapidly improving his
reputation as a force to be reckoned in
this sphere and looks up to winning in

Hunter Chase company in the not too
distant future.
Pete Mann also rode a double at the
Suffolk venue to continue his excellent
start the new campaign, firstly
partnering The Sliotar in the PPORA
Club Members (Div 2) before guiding
Pauline Harkin’s Glory Hunter home
in front in the Open Maiden (Div 2).
Harkin then doubled up on the day
courtesy of her Aintree Fox Hunters
hope Popaway, who won the TBA
Club Members race for mares and
fillies with any amount in hand.
Ockey De Neulliac was made to work
for his third victory of the season by
Joe O’Shea’s Ninetieth Minute at the
Jedforest at Friars Haugh, but stayed
on strongly to claim the Ladies Open
for regular pilot Catherine Walton and
trainer Neil Mechie.
O’Shea wasn’t to be denied in the
Mens Open, however, as Tom David
partnered the Richard Hewitt-owned
Woodview Prince to an impressive
success over the above average Open
performer Cave Hunter.
Nick Orpwood’s double at the
Jedforest was also a performance to
note; he took the Restricted aboard
Crazy Diamond, before following-up
in the final race, the Open Maiden, on
Mister D, in a race in which only two
of the 12 runners completed.
And finally at Chipley Park’s Tiverton
fixture, the star performance was
arguably that of Kayley Woollacott’s
Jepeck, who made it three from three
this season with an impressive win in
the Intermediate race, easily beating
the consistent Soul Native.
Parkam Jack and John Mathias lowered
the colours of the short-priced
favourite, Certain Flight, and Lucette
Annie also made it nine wins from her
last 13 starts in Points in the TBA
Club Members for mares and fillies.
Turning attentions to the upcoming
action and we have another busy
weekend ahead with four meetings on
Sunday, as well as the re-arranged West
Percy at Alnwick twenty-four hours
earlier on Saturday 31st. The original
entries for latter stand and entry to
this meeting is free, so I urge any of
our readers living in the vicinity of the
course to go along.

WAVENEY HARRIERS AT
HIGHAM
by Carolyn Tanner
Two competitors who had been
missing from the sport for several
years made a comeback at Higham on
Sunday. Taken purely on results, one
would appear to have succeeded and
the other not, but if success is
measured in terms of personal
achievement, both could be counted
winners.
David Fitch-Peyton, who rode and
trained in the nineties, saddled Bound
For Glory, who dislikes being confined
in a stable and is trained from the
field, to win the Ladies' Open under
an excellent front-running ride from
Hannah Lewis. David, stud manager at
Whitley Stud, near Tetbury, has
worked at top establishments as far
afield as the States, New Zealand and
Saudi Arabia.
Among his other accomplishments is
that of being a sub-three hour
marathon runner, so Hannah reasoned
there was no point in trying to walk
the course with him as it was
impossible to keep up!
The other returnee was Celia Savell,
whose last victory was on The Whip in
1997. "I had my licence taken away 14
years ago because of injury," she
7
explained, "and I decided I wanted to
retire on my own terms."
Celia's mount Stansa Stark completed
the course in the Maiden Division
One, but was over two fences behind
the winner My Alfie, a performance
which earned a quiet word from the
stewards. "I should have pulled up
because I was overtaking horses which
had," admitted the emotional ownerrider, "but I was just so thrilled to have
got round."
HUNTER CHASE SCHEDULE:
1ST - 15TH FEBRUARY
The first half of February will see a
busy programme of 10 Hunters'
Chases across the country.
Amongst the six Open races, there are
three valuable ones at Musselburgh,
Haydock Park and Ffos Las, together
with the first two Restricted races,
being those restricted to "five yrs old
and upwards, which have not won
more than three steeple chases" (not
including Point-to-Point races). The
schedule is completed with the first
two events for Novices during the
current season.
The above schedule for these races
can be found on pointtopoint.co.uk.

HUNTERCHASE REPORT
David Maxwell
WILLOUGHBY DE BROKE
OPEN HUNTERS’ CHASE WARWICK
by Carolyn Tanner
"It doesn't get better than that in a
three-mile Chase," smiled owner-rider
David Maxwell after Out Now had put
in a flawless round of jumping to take
Warwick's Willoughby De Broke Open
Hunters' Chase. The son of Muroto,
runner-up in the 2012 Irish Grand
National for Edward O'Grady, was
purchased at Doncaster in November,
just ten days after he had triumphed
between the flags in Ireland.
The horse which David had his eye on
was Becauseicouldntsee, who had
finished second to Out Now in that
October Point-to-Point, but "He's
now 12, and they asked 100,000 for
him, but when I saw Out Now was
going to be sold it made sense to go
for him," explained David.
It was Irish Pointing expert Richard
Pugh who had suggested that Out
#gopointing
Now would be an ideal purchase. "He
rang me and said he'd be the right sort
of horse for me, but what he meant
was that it would suit an old fat jockey
like me," laughed David.
"Last year I acquired Rob Conti from
Philip [Hobbs, Out Now's trainer] on
the condition he stayed in the yard,"
he continued. "Unfortunately that
didn't work out, but I did like having a
horse there, so I'd been looking for
another one to send him."
He has bought Out Now with the
Aintree Fox Hunters' in mind. "I've
ridden in the Cheltenham
Foxhunters' [on Noakarad De Verzee
in 2011] but never the Aintree one, so
at 36, it's time I fulfilled that
ambition," he pointed out.
David's one disappointment was the
defection from the race, due to a
bruised foot, of Teaforthree, who
would undoubtedly have started
favourite in what ended up as a five8
runner contest. "I wouldn't have
minded taking him on," he admitted.
A London-based property investor,
David, whose wife Tessa's parents,
Richard and Moira Hobbs [no relation
to the trainer!] were present to cheer
him home, has no opportunity to ride
during the week, but he goes to Giles
and Kim Smyly's most weekends. Prior
to Warwick, he had ridden his new
purchase just twice. "We jumped 12
fences, but he ran out at most of
them," he laughed. "He's a bit of a
monkey."
His groom, Emma McWilliam,
Hobbs's travelling head girl, and
herself a winning Point-to-Point rider,
might not agree, her own description
being "He's a gentleman, and lovely to
do."
The success was David's sixth under
Rules to go with his 27 between the
flags. He has two Pointers with Kim
Smyly, and is hoping to make his 2015
debut at Godstone next month.

SECOND CAREER VICTORIES
FOR SUBARU RESTRICTED
POINT-TO-POINT SERIES
QUALIFIERS
The two winners of Sunday’s Subaru
Restricted Point-to-Point Series races
at Friars Haugh and Cocklebarrow,
both secured the second wins of their
careers. John Chatfeild-Roberts’, Love
Manhattan, won by four lengths at the
Hethrop Hunt’s fixture, in his first run
of the new season and added to
victory in 2014 Maiden whilst Nick
Orpwood’s, Crazy Diamond was
favourite having won at Alnwick prior
to Christmas. Both horses are now
qualified for the prestigious final at
Stratford-Upon-Avon on 29th May
which has a prize purse of £10,000.
As well as the on-course excitement,
the Subaru dealers that supported the
fixtures exposed the new Subaru
Outback model to the British public

for the first time. Stephen Wilkins, of
John Wilkins, Cheltenham
commented, “the response to the new
model has been overwhelming, the
special features on the vehicle have
received positive feedback today”.
The next qualifier takes place next
Sunday, 1 February for the Mid Devon
fixture at Black Forest Lodge near
Exeter.
SUBARU RESTRICTED POINTTO-POINT SERIES MAKES ITS
FIRST VISIT TO THE SOUTHWEST
The Subaru Restricted Point-to-Point
horse race series makes its first visit to
the South-West on Sunday 1 February
for the Mid Devon fixture at Black

series, for horses that have not won
any race other than a Maiden or Hunt
Members race, culminates in a grand
final at Stratford-upon-Avon
9
racecourse on 29 May 2015. With an
attractive prize-fund of £10,000 up for
grabs, it’s sure to have a popular
following amongst West Country
owners and trainers keen to qualify.
Newton Abbott based Subaru
dealership, Ashburton Motor Works
Ltd, will display vehicles from the
current range at the event, including
the new Outback model that will be
made available to the UK market this
Spring - one of only a handful of
public exposures of the new vehicle.
It is the only visit to Black Forest
Lodge this season for the Subaru
series but one of three in the locality.
The Subaru Restricted Race is the fifth

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
DARREN EDWARDS
Firmly established as one of the leading amateur riders in the country, Darren rode his first winner under Rules
in 2000, his first Point-to-Point winner in 2001, and has never looked back, enjoying success at the
Cheltenham Festival along the way.
Date of birth: 5 September 1984.
Job or profession: Chartered
Surveyor, Partner in Fisher German
LLP.
Are you from a racing background?
If not, how did you get started in
Point-to-Pointing? Yes, my father
Gordon used to ride in Point-to-Points
and has held a permit for a number of
years.
What was your first ride in public?
Eileen Alanna on 23 September 2000
at Plumpton.
First winner – name of the horse,
owner & trainer, the date & the
course: Eileen Alanna, owned and
trained by my parents, on 21
November 2000 in a Novice Hurdle at
Market.
Apart from the first winner, what
has been your most memorable
ride? Maximize winning the 2004
Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir at the
Cheltenham Festival.
Is there a ride you look back on
and think “could have done
better?” Any that I do not win! I am
my own worst critic and always strive
to do better.
For which trainers/owners do you
mainly ride? The page is not big
enough to list everyone so it would be
unfair to start. I am lucky to ride for
lots of small to medium size yards,
many of whom have supported me for
a number of years.
Who has been most influential on
your riding career so far? My
parents, who have supported me from
day one.
Which are your favourite courses?
And for what reasons? Upcott Cross,
Buckfastleigh and Bratton Down.
They are all well run courses that are
often rewarded with quality racing.
What car do you drive? Audi A5.
Name your perfect night in and
perfect night out: A takeaway and
film with my girlfriend makes a good
night in; whilst crazy dancing with old
Uni mates is always a fun night out,
although as we are strung out across
the UK this doesn’t happen very often.
Where do you like to go on
holiday? Anywhere new. I am lucky to
#gopointing
pointing
have done a lot of travelling but there
are lots of places still on my hit list.
Who would be your ideal travelling
companions to the races? I’m fairly
relaxed, as long as they are quiet
enough for me to sleep!
What music are you currently
listening to? Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran,
and Alicia Keys.
What are your favourite films and
TV programmes? Films: Gladiator,
Saving Private Ryan, and Captain
Phillips. TV programmes: Strike Back
and Attheraces.
What has been either your own
funniest incident, or the most
amusing thing you have seen or
heard at the races? 15 June 2002 – I
was riding the favourite in the Mens
Open at Umberleigh. I moved upsides
travelling well with four to jump only
to see the flag man waving a bypass
flag in front of me. The rider of the
horse in third was shouting “go
around it”. I steered around four out,
taking Tim Vaughan with me, only to
find we were supposed to be jumping
it and bypassing three out! The rider
of the third went on to jump four out
and win the race. Tim was spitting and
the beneficiary was a certain Evan
Williams. The win secured him the
2002 National Mens’ title!
Who are your biggest heroes in
racing? AP McCoy. We rode our
first winners in the same colours,
both for dad. He has raised the
bar to a height that will struggle
to be matched in the future.
Which particular horse (in any
discipline) would you like to
ride? The feeling Tom Queally
got off Frankel must have been
special.
Apart from race-riding, in what
other sports do you participate?
All sports; although I’m better at
some than others!
Do you have any regrets
in your riding career
to date? Not really,
although the National
Hunt chase at the
Cheltenham
Festival in 2007
was a
11
race that got away. I was cantering on
Not Left Yet when he got unbalanced
and tipped up three out.
What ambitions do you have in
racing? To win a Foxhunters would
be nice; either will do.
Are there any changes that you
think would benefit the sport in the
future? Hunts combining resources.
Running Point-to-Points can be very
financially marginal and better pooling
of resources can aid sustainability and
safeguard the future of the sport.
What are your aspirations for the
season? Stay in one piece and enjoy it.
Can you give us a horse to look out
for this season? My first choice is
already on the sidelines but According
To Harry is a capable replacement.
Can you give us an up and coming
rider to look out for this season?
Riding primarily in the southwest
means I see lots of young riders
coming through from the bigger yards.
David Noonan (David Pipe), Sean
Houlihan (Philip Hobbs) and Tom
Humphries (Jeremy Scott) are likely to
be fighting it out for the Area Novice
titles given chances.
If you were on an island and could
only bring three things, what would
you bring? A horse,
a fence, and a
winning post.
And finally,
sum up
Point-toPointing in
one word:
Fun.

TRAINER PROFILE
KEITH CUMINGS
For how long have you been
training?
About 40 years!
The Mexican Bandit and Josh Guerriero
Photo: Tim Holt [email protected]
Where are you based?
Bishops Nympton, near South
Molton, a small market town on the
edge of Exmoor.
What training facilities do you have
available?
Plenty of steep hills for roadwork and
cantering on grass, an outdoor
rubber/sand school which we use a
lot for loose schooling. We use Victor
Dartnall’s all weather gallop and
schooling fences. Also, we make
regular trips on to the moor, where
horses learn to find their feet,
popping over gorse, logs and
ditches….they love it.
How many horses do you train?
We have 9 this season.
Do you train for yourself, family or
other Owners?
We have a few of our own to sell on,
but mainly train for our Owners.
Of which performance are you
most proud?
When my daughter Joanne won the
National Novice Championship, and
when she won on Flame O Frensi,
trained by us, at the Cheltenham
Hunter Chase Evening Meeting.
Did you race ride before you
started training?
A few, a long time ago, but I didn’t
trouble the Judge! I have always loved
stag hunting and still ride with the
DSSH on retired former stable star
Touch of Flame.
Which jockeys do you use
regularly?
Will Biddick, Josh Guerriero, Matt
Hampton and Robbie Henderson.
What car do you drive?
I have a Saab, and a Mitsubishi 4WD.
What kind of music do you like?
Jazz and Big Band music.

perfect night out?
In - One of my wife Janet’s roasts
around the dining room table with
family and friends.
Out - A good pub, with a good steak.
What do you do to take a break
from training. Hobbies, favourite
holiday destinations?
I enjoy shooting, hunting and boating
- holidays are usually with friends in
Portugal and Cornwall.
Which particular horse would you
like to train?
Sprinter Sacre, he is such an athlete.
Which horses do you have at the
moment that you would say have
good potential?
Certain Flight, The Mexican Bandit,
Little Cornham and
Whenharrymetsally.
What are your favourite courses
and meetings and why?
Bratton Down, it is a fair test for horse
and rider, and one of our local courses
- I am on the Committee who help
run all three meetings there
(Dulverton West, Exmoor and
Tiverton Staghounds).
Who would be your ideal travelling
companions to the races?
My Grandchildren.
What do you consider to be the
biggest challenges for Point to
Point trainers?
National Hunt Trainers running
horses in our Hunter Chases.
What has been your funniest
incident at the races?
Too many to mention, but lots of fun
times at the lorry after racing. Win,
lose or draw, a drink with Owners and
Jockeys rounds off the day nicely.
What developments do you think
would benefit the sport in the
future?
More 2m4f Maidens - they are an ideal
introduction for young, inexperienced
horses.

"Everyone said it looked scary,"
grinned Will Milburn, referring to his
first ride at Thorpe in 2008.
His partner on that occasion, and in
seven further attempts in his debut
season, was the hard-pulling
Alittlebitopower, who, in the jockey's
words "pissed off with me."
If Will is to be believed, it was a
foretaste of things to come, as he self#gopointing
deprecatingly laughed "It happens
nearly every week now!"
Will's equestrian skills were acquired in
the hunting fields of Yorkshire, but it
was travelling hundreds of miles to
meetings with his father John, a
reporter, race-reader and confirmed
Pointing enthusiast, which decided
him to give race-riding a go.
That early experience, followed by two
years on the sidelines due to
14
combination of a lack of
opportunities - his intended mount
failed to get on the course - and a
broken pelvis incurred at home when
a horse reared over on top of him,
would have deterred a less determined
novice rider, but Will gained his just
reward in 2011, at the age of 20, when
piloting Adin Abroad to victory at
Easingwold. His celebratory whipwaving, reported the form Annual,

"must surely have given Mickael
Barzalona the inspiration for his
display in the Derby."
Adin Abroad was trained by Andrew
Nicholls, who has supported Will
every season since, and for whom the
jockey still rides out a couple of times
a week, fitting it in around his job with
trainer Mark Walford. He joined the
Sheriff Hutton stable full-time last
year, having previously combined a
part-time position with working for an
online sports' shop.
In addition, he has taken on his
father's reporting role, and he writes
regular previews and reviews of the
Yorkshire meetings for that area's
website. He particularly enjoys
penning the reports, and prefers to

concentrate on the "little person," who
would not normally receive the
publicity enjoyed by the larger yards.
In 2014 Will's four winners were
enough to earn him the area Novice
championship, and the fact that they
were provided by as many different
yards says much about the regard in
which he is held. Regulars on the
Pointing circuit will have noted that he
will always give his mount every
chance but at the same time is
sympathetic and is not one of the
"finish at all costs" riders who fail to
pull up a tired horse.
He and his partner Emma Todd have
three to campaign from their own yard
this season, but "Emma's the trainer,"
he was quick to point out. The trio,
15
who are stabled nearby at Liz Clark's
premises, are Six A Side, on whom
Will triumphed at Easingwold in April,
Mr Conductor, an £800 Ascot
purchase who failed to complete in
three Irish Points in 2014, and recent
acquisition For A Finish, a 12-year-old
Hurdle and Chase winner who ran
between the flags in Ireland in
December but has lost his way in the
past couple of years.
Most of the horses which Will has to
ride this season are maidens, so his
aims are modest. "I'd be happy if I
could equal last year's total," he said.
He would also like to have a spin in a
Hunter Chase, and with that in mind is
hoping to get his Category ‘A' licence
in the near future.

“These colours have been used by my
family for over 100 years now,” Fred
told me. “I bet they’re worth a lot.”
Fred is the fourth generation of
Hutsbys to ride in races, following in
the footsteps of father Ken and
grandfather Henry, who used to train
the family Pointers until Fred took
over in 1997.
“When I started training here at
Walton Farm,” Fred explained, “we
only had two boxes.
“But we’re lucky that we train on a
farm. We’ve got access to all the hay

The Hutsbys do most of the work
themselves. “I start riding out second
lot after the school run,” laughs
Caroline. “We only have one girl
working here with us full time, as well
as a couple of work riders and some
weekend help.” So what about
holidays? “We go on holiday with the
horses when the boys are at school.

balance. When they start jumping, this
helps them meet the fences right.
Schooling is the key – we do enough
of it to teach them to ‘put in a short
one’ when they need to.”
The routine extends to the point-topoint season too. “I like to run them
early in the season, often at the first
Black Forest Lodge meeting,”
continues Fred. “Then I give them a
good break – they get at least a week
in the field each time they run. And it
works. While the Hutsby stable is not a
betting yard, Fred has a reputation for
getting his horses ready to run well,
and win, first time out.
Of course, Fred was a
successful jockey both
before and after he started

RIDER PROFILE | JACK TEAL
Jack Teal's debut in 2013 did not go to
plan - his partner Jake Spoon got no
further than the first fence - but by the
end of the campaign he had two
winners under his belt from just seven
rides, and had been noted by many
experienced observers as a name to
watch.
After an 11-week course at the British
Racing School he moved to Jefferson
full-time, and it says much about his
enthusiasm and work ethic that he was
nominated for the David Nicholson
Newcomer category in the prestigious
Stud and Stable Staff awards in 2013,
in which he finished runner-up.
on the score sheet. Mickey Miller was
holding every chance at Alnwick when
falling two out, and the promising
Burtredgipandgump, who beat
Desilvano on his sole outing in 2014,
was in the firing line when jettisoning
his partner, also at the penultimate
fence, at Sheriff Hutton.
There has since been no reason for a
change of mind, as was shown by his
fine ride to land the opening contest at
Sheriff Hutton earlier this month on
Fureys Bar.
His attention to detail also manifested
itself prior to making his debut at
Garthorpe. Never afraid to ask for
help and guidance in his search for
improvement, Jack sought the advice
of Guy Brewer with regard to riding
the track. He obviously heeded the
words of wisdom, as supporters of his
mount Foreverpresenting never had a
moment's concern.
Jack is now getting several outside
rides from owners and trainers who
have recognised his ability, but admits
there would be extra opportunities, for
both horses and jockeys, if more
thought was given to race planning.
"Too many meetings in adjoining areas
clash," is his belief. "I've got quite a
few maidens to ride now, and
hopefully they'll become Restricted
horses, but it will be difficult to find
enough races for them."
Success runs in the Teal family. Jack's
parents John and Jackie are also
involved with horses, but it is canines
with which they are primarily
occupied. They twice trained the
winner of coursing's Blue Riband, the
Waterloo Cup, and still travel their
greyhounds to Ireland to compete.
Their son, though, had his interest in
Pointing kindled by attending meetings
as a spectator, and having decided to
concentrate on racing he started going
to Malcolm Jefferson's yard while still
at school. His formal studies were
then restricted to four days a week, as
he was allowed out on the fifth day to
carry out his equine education!
He left Jefferson, for whom he had
seven rides, recording a second, third
and fourth place from his three
outings on the flat, at the end of last
year, and now works with the yard
team at Malton's Rainbow Equine
Hospital. "It gives me more time to do
my own horses," he explained.
The trio he is training this season
includes the aforementioned Fureys
Bar, but had luck been on his side the
remaining duo might have also been
One ambition which is currently on
hold is that of turning Conditional.
"I'd be silly not to if the chance arose,
but there's no point unless you're with
a good yard and you know you'll get
rides," he reasoned. "Anyway, I'm too
heavy at the moment," he added.
It seems that Jackie's culinary skills
have a lot to answer for!
