Bring an old XL cotton T-shirt that has been washed and dried or 1 yard of whashed and dried cotton jersey as wide as you measure around the widest part of your shoulders, plus a few inches extra for ease. 2. You will want to bring an assortment of needle types as well, if you have them available. I will bring some to share. HOMEWORK Knit a gauge swatch with the chosen yarn(s). Cast on at least 20 stitches and work to at least 4 inches length in either stockinette stitch or a texture, color or lace pattern that you love and want to incorporate into your cowl. Wash and lay out or block your swatch as you plan to wash or block the final garment. 9 DECORATIVE MENDING SUPPLIES TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK BELOW 1. Small amount of smooth, firm worsted weight wool yarn (superwash is ok) in a variety of colors. 2. Size 8 (5mm) double pointed needles 3. Yarn needle 4. Any damaged knitwear you may have, and yarns and needles to match the gauge of the fabric. HOMEWORK Bring 3 swatches worked in Worsted weight wool yarn with size 8 needles (or size to give you a rather firm fabric) each about 4 inches wide (about 20 stitches) and 4 inches tall. We will actually snip two of them to create holes to be mended. Of course, if people have real holes in their knits to mend, they are encouraged to bring them to class and we will assess the damage and strategize the best mend. ILISHA HELFMAN TURKISH SPINDLING SUPPLIES TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK Your materials fee includes an Aegean Turkish Spindle by Ed Jenkins and gorgeous samples of easy draft locally hand-dyed fibers that should be enough for everyone to use in class. If you would like to bring extra fiber feel free to bring soft, washed and combed easy to pull wool fiber, preferably in mixed colors. Although there is carpeting on the floor, you might want to bring a small soft pillow as a crash pad for your spindle in case of unexpected landings. Repeat this row until the swatch is 24 rows long (12 ridges). #3 Stockinette Stitch with Shaping: Cast on 41 stitches. Work even in stockinette stitch for 16 rows. Do not slip any of the edge stitches – just knit them on the right side and purl them on the wrong side. Bind off 8 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows (25 stitches remain). Decrease Row: K1, ssk, knit until 3 stitches remain, k2tog, k1. Work Decrease Row on the next 8 right-side rows. Purl the wrong-side rows. (9 stitches remain.) Work even in stockinette for 14 rows. Bind off. REVERSIBLE BORDERS SUPPLIES TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK 1. Smooth worsted weight yarn in a solid light color to make your homework swatch. 2. Bind off in knitting on the right side. KNITTED COLLARS SUPPLIES TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK 1. Smooth worsted weight yarn in a solid color. About 130 grams for the homework samples plus about 75 grams in a contrasting color for use during class. 2. Circular needle 24” or longer sized to produce a gauge of about 5 stitches per inch (about #7 US/4.5 mm). Second circular needle the same size at least 16” long. You need circular needles with a thin cable – do not use Denise circular needles. 3. It will seem like a lot of homework, but no more than most finishing classes with swatches. The instructions are long because the samples are shaped like necklines and shoulders of actual sweaters but they are small. There are 6 pieces to knit. Margaret has included drawings of shapes too so you know what you are making. BRING OUT THE BEST IN YOUR VARIEGATED YARN SUPPLIES TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK 1.
